The cornerstone of this determination has been an unwavering goal to benefit the children of South Africa with knowledge and skills that translate into economic freedom within a democratically transformed society, so that the intensive support provided to low under that they can respond to the modern challenges of the performing provinces in 2016 have borne fruit. This is Fourth Industrial Revolution. Hence, the Government a testament that Government’s pro-poor policies are of the Republic of South Africa regards the provision of working. The 2017 results provide further evidence quality of teaching and learning and learner attainment. 3 THE 2017 NATIONAL SENIOR CERTIFICATE Shaping Freedom SCHOOLS PERFORMANCE REPORT Through Education In 2017 there was increased investment in the sector to harness the participation of school communities in the strategic interventions that were driven by the 2017 NSLA that aimed to align the key national and provincial interventions, and to add value to teaching and learning in our schooling sector. As in 2016, targeted and focused interventions to improve learner performance in eleven (11) high enrolment subjects were implemented across all nine provinces in 2017. These were focused on underachieving schools, schools with more than 100 learners in high risk subjects, schools with novice Grade 12 teachers, and schools with high numbers of progressed learners. There were also targeted interventions for high achievers to enhance the quality of their performances in the final examinations. Provinces and districts intensified monitoring of the differentiated subject interventions throughout the year to ensure optimal participation, and quality of input over adequate timeframes, to enable accountability among all stakeholders responsible for operationalizing the 2017 NSLA. Consequently, four hundred and ninety seven (497) schools obtained a 100% pass rate, two thousand nine hundred and fifty nine (2959) schools obtained between 80—100% and 2083 achieved between 60 and 79.9%. However, the 597 schools that did not achieve the targets set in 2017 will be supported to identify the barriers to attaining these targets and to set new milestones in the academic year that lies ahead. Most of the sites identified in this category are of importance in their local contexts and are representative of the historical and cultural patterns that could be discerned from the built environment. All the identified sites were given a 3A category explained below. “A Sampling: Artefact, Document and Image” Rev Dr Scott Couper 18 March 2015 Forum for Schools and Archives AGM, 2015 The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Mission established Inanda Seminary in March 1869 as a secondary school for black girls. For a school to be established for black girls at this time was unheard of. It’s founding was radical, as radical as its first principal, Mary Kelly Edwards, the first single female to be sent by the American Board to southern Africa. Many of South Africa’s most prominent female leadership are products of the Seminary. Inanda Seminary produces pioneers: Nokutela Dube, co-founder of Ohlange Institute with her husband the Reverend John Dube, first President of the African National Congress (ANC), attended the Seminary in the early 1880s. Linguists and missionaries Lucy and Dalitha Seme, sisters of the ANC’s founder Pixley Isaka kaSeme, also attended the Seminary in the 1860s and 1870s. Anna Ntuli became the first qualified African nurse in the Transvaal in 1910 and married the first African barrister in southern Africa, Alfred Mangena. Nokukhanya Luthuli attended from 1917-1919 and taught in 1922 at the Seminary. Nokukhanya accompanied her husband, Albert Luthuli who was the ANC President-General and a member of the Seminary’s Advisory Board, to Norway to receive the 1960 Nobel Peace Prize in 1961. Edith Yengwa also schooled and taught at the Seminary; she attended from 1940, matriculated in 1946, began teaching in 1948 and became the school’s first black head teacher in 1966. The same year she left the Seminary for exile, joining her husband, Masabalala Yengwa, the Secretary of the Natal ANC.
