JOHN THE BAPTIST ACCORDING TO FLAVIUS JOSEPHUS, AND HIS INCORPORATION IN THE CHRISTIAN TRADITION Johannes Tromp In Jewish Antiquities 18.116-119, Flavius Josephus includes a section on John the Baptist. His reason for including it was that it contained a widely circulating explanation for the victory of the Nabatean king Aretas over the tetrarch Herod Antipas. 1 In my translation, it reads as follows: 116. Some Jews believed that the army of Herod was destroyed by God, who quite rightly avenged the fate of John, surnamed the Baptist. 117. For Herod had John killed, although he had been a good man. He had asked the Jews to lead a virtuous life and to come together for baptism,2 while practising righteousness towards each other, and piety towards God. In this way, it seemed to him, was baptism acceptable: they should not use it to obtain forgiveness for the sins they had committed, but as a purification of the body, inasmuch as their soul had already been cleansed beforehand by righteousness. 118. When others joined them-for they became highly agitated by his preaching-Herod feared his influence on people to be so great that it might lead to some uprising; for they seemed to be doing everything according to his advice. Therefore Herod decided that it would be much better to take the initiative to have him killed before he was able to cause some revolution, than to get involved in matters once the revolt had begun, and then be sorry. 119. Because of Herod's apprehension,John was sent in chains to the aforementioned fortress of Machaerus and killed there. -

The primary focus of this paper is the character Zerbinetta, a coloratura soprano who is the main performer in the commedia dell’arte troupe. Following consideration of the opera’s historical background, the first segment of this paper examines Zerbinetta’s duet with the young Composer starting from “Nein Herr, so kommt es nicht…” in the Prologue, which reveals her coquettish yet complex character. The second section offers a detailed description of her twelve-minute aria “Großmächtige Prinzessin” in the opera, exploring the show’s various levels of satire. The last segment is an investigation of the differing perspectives of the performers and the audience during Zerbinetta’s tour de force. -

Introduction In the New Testament, John the Baptist (c. 6 BCE–30 CE) is remembered as a preacher of fiery judgment and as the forerunner of Jesus. He was associated with the wilderness and baptized his co-religionists in the Jordan River. His conflict with the Herodian family led to his execution by Herod Antipas sometime in the third or fourth decade of the first century ce. Modern historians typically conceptualize John as an ‘apocalyptic’ Jewish figure. This article is broken down into two parts. First, it underscores basic difficulties of constructing the historical John the Baptist. Second, it outlines the features of first-century traditions that could plausibly be understood as intersecting with first-century apocalyptic ideology. Coupled with the recognition that seemingly most claims regarding the historical John the Baptist are fiercely debated among scholars, the present discourse’s application of the terms ‘apocalyptic’ and ‘apocalypticism’ in reference to the Baptist is not intended to convey that the actual first-century figure operated with an apocalyptic outlook. Rather, the listings of traditions in the primary sources that depict John the Baptist are intended to underscore their conceivable points of overlap with apocalyptic frameworks of thought. The Sources and Their Problems Several complex issues confront the historian who endeavours to access the John the Baptist of history. -
NY Philharmonic Opening Nights TV Notes
September 21, 2011 at 7:30 on PBS New York Philharmonic Opening Night The Russian-American composer, Vladimir Dukelsky, led a double life. Under his birth name, Dukelsky, he composed music for the concert hall that was championed by Serge Koussevitzky in Paris, Boston and New York. Under his Americanized name, Vernon Duke, he composed some of the great works in the American Songbook, including "April in Paris" and its counterpart, "Autumn in New York". Autumn in New York means many different things in today's world, among them children returning to school, the wind-down of the baseball season, and the start of a new season for the New York Philharmonic. This year that event will be marked on Wednesday evening, September 21, inaugurating Alan Gilbert's third season as the orchestra's Music Director. And as usual Live From Lincoln Center will be in Avery Fisher Hall with its cameras and microphones to bring the festivities right into your own homes. Maestro Gilbert has assembled a "barn-burner" of a program, beginning with Samuel Barber's School for Scandal Overture and ending with the Intermezzo, Dance of the Seven Veils and Final Scene from Richard Strauss's Salome. In between we'll have more Barber: the dramatic scene for soprano and orchestra "Andromache's Farewell" and music from Wagner's opera Tannhäuser: the Overture and soprano aria, "Dich teure Halle". Guest artist of the evening is the lustrous American soprano, Deborah Voigt, fresh from her triumph this summer at the Glimmerglass Opera Company in the title role in Irving Berlin's Annie Get Your Gun. -

Tratta da una commedia di Ben Jonson, Die schweigsame Frau è l'unico frutto della collaborazione di Strauss con Stefan Zweig; altri progetti vennero recisi sul nascere dall'ostracismo decretato dal regime nazista allo scrittore ebreo, e la stessa Schweigsame Frau, incantevole per delicatezza ed umorismo, fu accolta a teatro con grandine di fischi. Strauss medesimo dovette venire in Italia per assistere ad una rappresentazione della sua opera, approdata alla Scala di Milano nel marzo 1936, (direttore Gino Marinuzzi): precocemente esiliata dalle scene, infatti l'opera pagava in terra tedesca il fio delle origini ebraiche del proprio librettista, che determinò un divieto al suo inserimento nelle programmazioni. Strauss raccoglie qui i risultati della distillazione di sonorità avviata con il Rosenkavalier: ritornando all'orchestra rarefatta di Intermezzo, agli improvvisi ripiegamenti cameristici, mentre il canto scioglie morbide linee, sospese in una sintesi perfetta fra la scorrevolezza della parola e la grazia della melodia. 154 Rispetto all'originale di Jonson, Zweig inserì due sensibili modifiche: anzitutto la finta moglie di Morosus non è un giovanotto abile nei travestimenti, ma una donna in carne ed ossa; inoltre questa donna sente pena e rimorso per la beffa architettata, pur con buone intenzioni, ai danni dell'anziano signore. -

It is a time to remember the suffering, death, and burial in preparation for the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. As we approach and journey through Lent, let us focus on the women who were present when Jesus was crucified on Calvary and later at His tomb. Let us begin with prayer : Lord Jesus Christ, be with us as we study Your Word, meditating upon those women who were near You at the cross and the tomb. In Your holy name. Amen. It took courage for them to stand there in the midst of the hatred and ridicule. Their attendance was intended to encourage Jesus. Jesus’ mother, Mary, is experiencing what Simeon had predicted years before in Luke 2:35. As she stood there, her grief must have been nearly unbelievable. -
