L1 the ORIGINALS 545 13 Maart 2016 Arnold Rypens L1 THE ORIGINALS 545 13 maart 2016 Arnold Rypens - Kirsten 2:47 1 How Can I Miss You (Hicks) Big Beat DAN HICKS 3 Dit zijn The Originals bij L1 Radio met How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away, de eerste song die Dan Hicks ooit schreef, hier als demo alvorens het aan zijn band The Charlatans toe te vertrouwen. 2 Walking One And Only (Hicks) Blue Thumb DAN HICKS & his Hot Licks DALET Walking One And Only, opnieuw Dan Hicks met eigen werk dat een tweede leven kreeg bij zowel Maria Muldaur als Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings. Driemaal scheepsrecht voor Dan Hicks & his Hot Licks al in 1969. 3 I Scare Myself (Hicks) Epic DAN HICKS & his Hot Licks DALET 4:10 4 P.F. Sloan (Webb) Reprise JIMMY WEBB YT Jimmy Webb op zijn lp Words And Music "seeking P.F. Sloan, not knowing where he has gone" en ondertussen heeft ook die P.F. 3:15 5 Eve Of Destruction (Sloan) Dunhill P.F. Sloan. 2:54 6 Let Me Be (Sloan) Dunhill P.F. SLOAN YT 2:37 7 You Baby (Sloan/Barri) Trousdale P.F. SLOAN YT Phil Sloan time in The Originals, Let Me Be en You Baby, songs die je ook van The Turtles en The Grass Roots kan kennen, de westcoast-formatie met naast P.F. zèlf ook coauteur Steve Barri. Hun Where Were You When I Needed You kan je ook kennen van The Bangles , Herman's Hermits en Del Shannon, de eerste versie die op plaat uitkwam was die van Jan & Dean, niet meteen de meest subtiele maar eerst is eerst! 2:47 8 Where Were You When I Needed Yo(Sloan/Barri) Liberty JAN & DEAN YT 2:34 9 What Am I Doin' Here With You (Sloan/Barri) Imperial JOHNNY RIVERS L122b 2 What Am I Doin' Here With You is net als Where Were You When I Needed You een Sloan & Barri-compositie, voor het eerst uitgebracht door deze Johnny Rivers op zijn lp In Action in 1965. Trying To Live My Life Without You was dus heus niet zijn enige Originals' claim to fame. 2:50 15 You Got Me Hummin' (Hayes/Porter) Stax SAM & DAVE 1 2:28 16 Raise Your Hand (Floyd/Cropper/Isbell) Stax EDDIE FLOYD 6 Eerst You Got Me Hummin' van Sam & Dave, een R&B top 10 in 1966 en naast Billy Price & Otis Clay ook gecoverd door The Hassles (met Billy Joel), Geno Washington, The Ikettes, The Pointer Sisters, Brinsley Schwarz en Delbert McClinton. Eddie Floyd daarna met Raise Your Hand, bekend van The J. Geils Band, Bruce Springsteen, Mitch Ryder, Janis Joplin, The Q Tips (met Paul Young) en ook weer Otis Clay. EINDAFK. Toch nog even de originele Trying To Live My Life Without You om het af te leren? Ook weer gecoverd van The J. Geils Band tot Brinsley Schwarz, naast Bob Seger natuurlijk. Otis die dood is. 2:48 17 Trying To Live My Life Without You (Williams) Hi OTIS CLAY 22 .

  • The History of the Turtles Featuring Flo & Eddie
THE HISTORY OF THE TURTLES FEATURING FLO & EDDIE Very few rock performers have remained as vital through the 1960s, ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s and the new millennium as have Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman... and as The Turtles, featuring Flo & Eddie, they continue to maintain a vigorous tour schedule. Two guys from Westchester. That's how Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan (aka Flo and Eddie) refer to themselves. Two slightly bewildered kids thrust into the fast lane of rock 'n' roll stardom - hits, fame, national tours, hanging out with the Beatles, joining the Mothers of Invention, acting in the 200 Motels movie, and on and on ... Two guys from Westchester. Howard Kaylan (changed in 1965 from Kaplan, because that's how it always looked when he wrote his name) was born June 22, 1947 in the Bronx, and spent his first eight years in Manhattan before his father took a job with General Electric in Utica, New York. After the family moved there for a year or so, they moved to the Los Angeles area, settling in Westchester. Mark Volman was born April 19, 1947. After a brief period living in Redondo Beach, his family moved nearby to Westchester. Little did they know it at the time, but both Mark's and Howard's musical direction was forged by a crusty, old Mr. Ferguson who gave clarinet lessons in a drafty cubicle above the Westchester Music Store. Mark went to Orville Wright Jr. High, while Howard went to Airport Jr. High. They didn't know each other, but they both pursed their lips around clarinet reeds for Mr.

Cultural CommentarY.. _ Real Music About Things That Matter: The Survival of Folk Gil Bliss ollowing a decade-long slump, folk Fmusic is enjoying a return to popularity. The term "folk" should refer to music made by common people, not to the media definition of folk music that elicits visions of hay bales, hootenannies and country hicks. Although many younger music aficio nados may not understand this, there once was a time when American musical tastes were not dictated by MTV, force-fed radio programming at even the money-hungry corporate record business. Musicians were able to entertain the public even ifthey had not made videos. Before electric guitars, Walkman units, microphones, stereo tele vision, or even electricity, people managed to amuse themselves with tunes and styles ofmusic learned and performed around the home. For years, there were no mass-matket media to convey these sounds to the general public, and as a result, musical trends were generated and perpetuated along various geographical and socia-economic bound aries. Bluegrass thrived in the mountains of Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia, while Tom Rush New Englanders kept alive a rich tradition ofmusic from the British Isles.

Cassaro, University of Pittsburgh, Music ii Copyright © by Sara Gulgas 2017 iii LOOKING FORWARD TO THE PAST: BAROQUE ROCK’S POSTMODERN NOSTALGIA AND THE POLITICS OF MEMORY Sara Gulgas, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2017 In the mid-1960s, baroque rock music blended the sound of string quartets, harpsichord ostinatos, and contrapuntal techniques with rock instrumentation. This contemporary representation of the distant past presents an ironic anachronism that is humorous in its novel affect while allowing this dissonance to alert the listener about constructions of memory and the perception of time. Some of the biggest names in rock and roll were influenced by the Early Music revival but took a non-linear approach to history rather than undertaking “historically informed performance.” They cultivated what I call postmodern nostalgia: a symptom of crisis and progress that is simultaneously reflexive in its detached interpretation of history and imagined in its participants’ ability to reference a past they have not themselves experienced.
