EDUCATION IN VIRTUES Little Deacons to Grade 8

March 8 Virtue of the week: Fortitude

Know It: Fortitude is the Cardinal Virtue that perfects our emotions, particularly by freeing us from the grip of fear and anger. It makes us strong in the pursuit of goodness, helping us to resist temptations and overcome obstacles. Live It: Showing firmness in difficulties, being constant in the pursuit of good, staying away from or participating in unjust acts are examples of living out the virtue of fortitude. This virtue aids us in everyday situations to live prudently, justly, and temperately.

Pray It: Dear Jesus, Alone I am weak, but with You I can do all things. Give me the grace to be strong against temptations and bold in proclaiming You and Your Church on Earth. Amen. Saint: St. Teresa of Avila was a woman “for God,” a woman of prayer, discipline, and compassion. Her heart belonged to God. Her ongoing conversion was an arduous lifelong struggle, involving ongoing purification and suffering. She was misunderstood, misjudged, and opposed in her efforts at reform. Yet she struggled on, courageous and faithful; she struggled with her own mediocrity, her illness, her opposition. And in the midst of all this she clung to God in life and in prayer.

Coming to a close of another week, we reflect upon our progress along the path to Easter. Hopefully there have been times of joy—these are important—but hopefully there have been times we have experienced struggle which is the sign we are growing and making progress. As we look at the virtues that help us understand the importance of Easter, the virtue of Charity helps us to see our Lenten sacrifices and prayer in a new light. Charity, or love, is the reason that we look with hope at this season of penance. Thinking about the power of Charity, my mind wanders quickly to the scene of Veronica whipping the face of Jesus along his journey to Calvary from the Stations of the Cross. This simple act of compassion, done not for show or honor, but to relieve the suffering of another, is a mirror to the act of love that Jesus reveals as he bears the weight of the cross. The example of Veronica is a great reminder that every act of love that we perform, and every sacrifice done in love, is connected with the passion of Jesus that brings us life. Spurred along by her example we pray that our Lenten journey may be marked with many small acts of generous love, and that, by them, we will grow in holiness and virtue.

Dear Sixth-Grade Girls’ Volleyball Players and Parents,

Welcome to another year of girls’ volleyball. Middle school volleyball starts 3:45 PM on Tuesday, March 16th in gym 2 at Sullivan/Shanley. Sign-ups were conducted at Sullivan Middle School in January. If your daughter did not sign up and still would like to play, that is fine. She will just need to show up for the first day of practice. No physical is necessary as NDHSAA regulations start in 7th grade. The season would cost $50 and would be billed through FACTS roughly half way through the season.

Practices will be held Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays each week after the initial start date of Tuesday, March 16th on days which there is school. While the first practice starts at 3:45 PM, some practices may start around 4:30 PM. Please check the online calendars for specific practice times.

At this time we do not have a game schedule. We usually get a schedule one week into the season when all other schools in the area know how many teams of each age group they will have. As soon as we get a schedule we will hand them out at practice for your students to bring home. Teams will typically have one or two games a week after the first of practice: one game either Monday or Tuesday and a possibly a second game on Thursday. All of those games are played in the Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo area. Once games start, teams will typically practice the Mondays, Tuesday, and Thursdays of non-game days.

If you have any further questions please feel free to call or email the activities office.

Sincerely,

Michael Breker, Activities Director 701-893-3218 [email protected]
