FREIIERICKIT-. ~YVKSTEK, Mayor of the City of Brooli[v~i: DEAR SIR.-I hare the honor, in accordance with the usual custom, to hand you the report of the proceedings of the Department of Parks of the City of Broolilyn, henceforth to TEIE IIATTLG PASS LIOXUMEII'T, PROSPECT PARK. be lmoxxrn as the Borough of Brool;lyn, for the year 1897, the year which closes the history of the City of Brookl~~ias a sep- arate i~~unicipality. The Park Department of the City of Broolil~-nis one that may be pointed to vith pride. Its histor- has bee11 one of 8 REPORT OF THE constant pi-ogress materially and artistically, and it is par- donable pride to say that its parks are not surpassed in any respect by those of any other city in the world. The acreage of Brooklyn's parks is not equal to that of the Boroughs of Manhattan and the Bronx combined, but, con- sidered from the standpoint of population, it is nearly equal to it, they having about one acre of park land to a population of four hundred, while in the City of Brooklyn there is about one acre of park land to each five hundred inhabitants. In the natural advantages of scenery and views of the Sound and the sea, beaches affording bathing facilities and opportunities for boating and other aquatic sports, the park systeln of the Borough of Brooklyn stands easily at the head of all other park systems. The drive~vaysand parkways are extensive and varied in attractions, leading in all directions and affoi-ding opportuni- ties for daily change in pleasure driving, thus relieving the recreation of driving and bicycling from the drawback of monotony. In acquiring Brooklyn, the City of New York has, in the Parlr Department at least, obtained one treasure for the benefit of all the people xvhich will add luster to the new vvnunicipality. Buffalo avenue to Canar- I sie Park. In addition to these parkways there are two bicycle paths, each five and one-half miles in length, exclusix~elydevoted to the use of bicycle riders. They are located on the Ocean Parkway, one on each side of the main drive. DEPARTMENT OF PARKS. 15 THE WORK OF THE YEAR. To properly maintain, improve and develop these parks and parkways demands intelligence, time and love of the work. The best of talent alone pays, for ignorance causes more de- struction in a short time than years of constant endeavor can rep air. The work of the past year has been largely creative. New parks have been created out of waste places upon lines of plans carefully prepared, roads have been built, old ones remade, and much has been done in the way of artistic adornment for the beautifying of the old parks, and out of this work has come much pleasure for all the people. The wisdom of locating small parks in various sections of the thickly settled portions of the city has been demonstrated the past year by the way in which the new parks have been oc- cupied by the people, even before they were developed. There has been a movement started which has forits object the estab- lishment of more of these small parks. The Department has been in full sympathy with this idea, but has not been able to make further purchases because of lack of money. It would be well for the City as soon as possible to establish new parks in the Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Nineteenth Wards of the city, which are wards to a large extent built up of factories, tene- ments, etc., where parks are needed and would be greatly appreciated.

Specifically, this study attempts to establish a logical expansion and adaptation of Bale’s Four-Stage Ideal-type on the Evolution of the Modern English Soccer Stadium appropriate for the history of professional baseball and football and that predicts future changes in American sport facilities. In essence, it is the author’s intention to provide a more coherent and comprehensive account of the evolving professional baseball and football sport facility and where it appears to be headed. This investigation concludes eight stages exist concerning the evolution of the professional baseball and football sport facility. Stages one through four primarily appeared before the beginning of the 20th century and existed as temporary structures which were small and cheaply built. Stages five and six materialize as the first permanent professional baseball and football facilities. Stage seven surfaces as a multi-purpose facility which attempted to accommodate both professional football and baseball equally.

Our first Boston show was with DYS, The Mighty COs and The AMERICA’S HARDCORE FU’s. It was very intense for us. We were so intimidated. Future generations will fuck up again THE OUTPATIENTS got started in 1982 by Deep Wound bassist Scott Helland At least we can try and change the one we’re in and his older brother Eric “Vis” Helland, guitarist/vocalist of Mace — a 1980-82 — Deep Wound, “Deep Wound” Metal group that played like Motörhead but dug Black Flag (a rare blend back then). The Outpatients opened for bands like EAST COAST Black Flag, Hüsker Dü and SSD. Flipside called ’em “one of the most brutalizing live bands In 1980, over-with small cities and run-down mill towns across the Northeast from the period.” 1983’s gnarly Basement Tape teemed with bored kids with nothing to do. People always say I must have a beautiful yard. Truth is, I don’t even have what I would call a “landscape.” I have a “Lazy Gardener’s Laboratory” … The “Lazy Gardener” column started when I was a Chronicle reporter. Alice Hodges was gardening columnist. I had a new house and plants from my grandmother and mother. When Alice left, the managing editor, Don Pickles, asked if anyone could write the column until he could find another “real horticulturist.” I was successfully growing elephant ears and monkey grass. I said, “I'll do it!” Since it was a temporary assignment, Beverly Harris, my editor, gave me permission to do a humorous column, “The Lazy Gardener” — a la Erma Bombeck. Don didn’t care as long as I gave him what-to-do-each month tips, like Alice did, to tape to his refrigerator. I wrote of my gardening successes (and failures) and interviewed plant society members. What an education! The column continued, I became a Master Gardener and, later, I teamed up with Sally McQueen Squire, the Bulb Lady, a master horticulturist and a stickler for doing things right. (Through her River Bend Co., my horticultural education continues to this day.) Back then our plants came mainly from California and Florida. Weakened by our heavy spring/fall rains, intensely hot summers or prolonged droughts, they were prey to insects and disease.

    UNIVERSITY PARK. (Area, 3 acres; acquired in 1901.) This is a side-hill park, lying in front of the Kew York Uni- versity, and it was partially cleaned up and a road built through it during the year r 901. During the present year a new retain- ing-wall has been built along the whole westerly side of this park 628 feet in length, and all of the ground throughout this park has been cleaned; the westerly bank has been graded and sloped to meet the wall; both ends of the park, which had not been cleared before, have been cleaned up; all the old boulders removed, and the intersections of the drives and the west slope have been planted ~vitIishrubs. The road has been resurfaced, drains repaired, and new di-ains made where needed. (Area, 12 acres; acquired in 1901.) Kothing was done to this park previous to the present year in the way of development, and the same had been cofiplained of as exceedingly unhealthy, on account of the lack of drainage, stagnant water remaining there during a large portion of the year. Early in the present season this park was thoroughly underdrained, and connections made with a sewer which passes through One Hundred and Ninety-second street, requiring the building of over 2,000 lineal feet of vitrified pipe and stone drains. One Hundred and Ninety-second street has been constructed across the park from Jerome avenue to Creston avenue, a distance of 660 feet. 2,880 lineal feet of rubble walks have been laid. In the building of the road and the grading of the park, where old open drains existed, several thousand loads of material have been used.
