Protection and Transmission of Chinese Nanyin by Prof. Wang, Yaohua Fujian Normal University, China Intangible cultural heritage is the memory of human historical culture, the root of human culture, the ‘energic origin’ of the spirit of human culture and the footstone for the construction of modern human civilization. Ever since China joined the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2004, it has done a lot not only on cognition but also on action to contribute to the protection and transmission of intangible cultural heritage. Please allow me to expatiate these on the case of Chinese nanyin(南音, southern music). I. The precious multi-values of nanyin decide the necessity of protection and transmission for Chinese nanyin. Nanyin, also known as “nanqu” (南曲), “nanyue” (南乐), “nanguan” (南管), “xianguan” (弦管), is one of the oldest music genres with strong local characteristics. As major musical genre, it prevails in the south of Fujian – both in the cities and countryside of Quanzhou, Xiamen, Zhangzhou – and is also quite popular in Taiwan, Hongkong, Macao and the countries of Southeast Asia inhabited by Chinese immigrants from South Fujian. The music of nanyin is also found in various Fujian local operas such as Liyuan Opera (梨园戏), Gaojia Opera (高甲戏), line-leading puppet show (提线木偶戏), Dacheng Opera (打城戏) and the like, forming an essential part of their vocal melodies and instrumental music. As the intangible cultural heritage, nanyin has such values as follows. I.I. Academic value and historical value Nanyin enjoys a reputation as “a living fossil of the ancient music”, as we can trace its relevance to and inheritance of Chinese ancient music in terms of their musical phenomena and features of musical form. -

Pipa • Pipa [ Picture of Pipa ] Description A pear shaped lute with 4 strings and 19 to 30 frets, it was introduced into China in the 4th century AD. The Pipa has become a prominent Chinese instrument used for instrumental music as well as accompaniment to a variety of song genres. It has a ringing ('bass-banjo' like) sound which articulates melodies and rhythms wonderfully and is capable of a wide variety of techniques and ornaments. Tuning The pipa is tuned, from highest (string #1) to lowest (string #4): a - e - d - A. In piano notation these notes correspond to: A37 - E 32 - D30 - A25 (where A37 is the A below middle C). Scordatura As with many stringed instruments, scordatura may be possible, but one needs to consult with the musician about it. Use of a capo is not part of the pipa tradition, though one may inquire as to its efficacy. Pipa Notation One can utilize western notation or Chinese. If western notation is utilized, many, if not all, Chinese musicians will annotate the music in Chinese notation, since this is their first choice. It may work well for the composer to notate in the western 5 line staff and add the Chinese numbers to it for them. This may be laborious, and it is not necessary for Chinese musicians, who are quite adept at both systems. In western notation one writes for the Pipa at pitch, utilizing the bass and treble clefs. In Chinese notation one utilizes the French Chevé number system (see entry: Chinese Notation). In traditional pipa notation there are many symbols that are utilized to call for specific techniques. -

The Ryukyuanist A Newsletter on Ryukyu/Okinawa Studies No. 67 Spring 2005 This issue offers further comments on Hosei University’s International Japan-Studies and the role of Ryukyu/Okinawa in it. (For a back story of this genre of Japanese studies, see The Ryukyuanist No. 65.) We then celebrate Professor Robert Garfias’s achievements in ethnomusicology, for which he was honored with the Japanese government’s Order of the Rising Sun. Lastly, Publications XLVIII Hosei University’s Kokusai Nihongaku (International Japan-Studies) and the Ryukyu/Okinawa Factor “Meta science” of Japanese studies, according to the Hosei usage of the term, means studies of non- Japanese scholars’ studies of Japan. The need for such endeavors stems from a shared realization that studies of Japan by Japanese scholars paying little attention to foreign studies of Japan have produced wrong images of “Japan” and “the Japanese” such as ethno-cultural homogeneity of the Japanese inhabiting a certain immutable space since times immemorial. New images now in formation at Hosei emphasize Japan’s historical “internationality” (kokusaisei), ethno-cultural and regional diversity, fungible boundaries, and demographic changes. In addition to the internally diverse Yamato Japanese, there are Ainu and Ryukyuans/Okinawans with their own distinctive cultures. Terms like “Japan” and “the Japanese” have to be inclusive enough to accommodate the evolution of such diversities over time and space. The videos will be a starting point for discussion in regard to the major art movements in the 20th century, why they occurred and what cultural, social and political conditions were influencing these movements. Prerequisites: None. Credits: 1 Time: M 9 - 10am AH 2133.01 Introduction to Minimalism: Art, Dance, Music Laura Heon This course offers an overview of the American art movement of the 1960s and 70s called “Minimalism,” also known as “ABC Art” and “Primary Structures.” Characterized by extreme simplicity of form and a literal, objective approach, Minimalism gave rise to a vibrant exchange among the visual arts, dance, and music. Thus, this course will be divided evenly among visual artists (including Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Sol Lewitt, Dan Flavin), choreographers (Yvonne Rainer, Merce Cunningham, Trisha Brown) and the composers (La Monte Young, Phillip Glass, Terry Riley). It will include a trip to Dia:Beacon in nearby Beacon, NY, where an important collection of minimalist art is on view. The course will touch on the Abstract Expressionist movement, which laid the groundwork for Minimalism, as well as post-minimalist tendencies in the art of our time. Prerequisites: None. The Tokugawa Art Museum Special Exhibition The Hina Doll Festival of the Owari Tokugawa Family 2021 From February 6 (Sat.) to April 4 (Sun.), 2021 Organized by The Tokugawa Art Museum, Hōsa Library-City of Nagoya and The Chūnichi Shimbun The dolls and doll accessories that were made to order for the princesses of the Owari Tokugawa family have been passed down to the Tokugawa Art Museum and all of them boast a high quality that is befitting the most senior rank of the three branches of the Tokugawa family. Another highlight is the collection of Meiji, Taishō and Shōwa–era displays overflowing with dolls and accessories and reaching as much as two meters high by seven meters wide. Here, we introduce this world of the Doll Festival reaching heights of luxury and elegance achievable only in such a household of the daimyō elite. The Tokugawa Art Museum's Hina Doll Collection Yūsoku-bina of Lady Kane-hime The Tokugawa Art Museum has a large hina doll collection. The most gorgeous sets of dolls belonged to Lady Kane-hime (1831– 1902), who married the 14th Lord of Owari, Tokugawa Yoshikatsu (1824–1883), at the age of 19. It was customary for a daimyō's daughter to bring her hina dolls with her when she married into another daimyō family, so Kane-hime’s dolls were passed down in the Owari Tokugawa family and eventually came to the Museum. Yūsoku-bina (two sets of hina dolls and five gagaku musicians) All of Kane-hime’s hina dolls belong to the category of yūsoku-bina. -

Plucked Stringed Instruments Fig. 2.1: The Pipa 18 Pipa 2 琵琶 Pipa HISTORY The grand dame of plucked stringed instruments, the pipa is one of the most expressive instruments in the Chinese orchestra (Fig. 2.1). Recent moves by some major Chinese orchestras include removing the instrument entirely from the orchestral formation due to its overpowering character and inability to blend. Its techniques, however, are applied to almost every plucked stringed instrument and its concepts have been borrowed for the reformations of various plucked stringed instruments. The term pipa used today refers to the lute-shaped instrument which comprises of four strings and a fretted soundboard of 20 to 25 frets. In the ancient Chinese dynasties of Sui and Han, the term pipa was generic for any instrument that was plucked or had a plucked string aspect to it. The word pipa is made up of two Chinese characters – 琵 pi and 琶 pa1. The words describe how the instrument is played and the sounds it produced. The forward plucking of the string using one’s right hand was termed pi, and the backward plucking of the string with the right hand was termed pa. The first recorded connotation to the word pipa was found in 刘熙 Liu Xi’s <<释名>> Shi Ming, where it was recorded as piba2. Although greatly associated with the Chinese, the pipa is not native to China; the instrument was introduced to China by Asia Minor over 2000 years ago. As the instrument is foreign, its counterparts in the forms of lutes and mandolins can still be found in Central and Western Asia. -

Apart from standard unaccompanied works by Tōru Takemitsu and Kazuo Fukushima, other Japanese flute compositions have yet to establish a permanent place in the standard flute repertoire. The purpose of this document is to broaden awareness of Japanese flute compositions through the discussion, analysis, and evaluation of substantial flute sonatas by three important Japanese composers: Ikuma Dan (1924-2001), Hikaru Hayashi (1931- 2012), and Akira Tamba (b. 1932). A brief history of traditional Japanese flute music, a summary of Western influences in Japan’s musical development, and an overview of major Japanese flute compositions are included to provide historical and musical context for the composers and works in this document. Discussions on each composer’s background, flute works, and compositional style inform the following flute sonata analyses, which reveal the unique musical language and characteristics that qualify each work for inclusion in the standard flute repertoire. These analyses intend to increase awareness and performance of other Japanese flute compositions specifically and lesser- known repertoire generally.
