Née le : 13 Août 1963 Lieu : Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu Situation de famille : Mariée à Boney Kapoor Deux filles : Jhanvi et Khushi Sridevi surnommée « The Bollywood Queen » est incontestablement l’actrice qui a le plus tourné avec plus de 250 films commerciaux et elle reste de très loin, la meilleure. Elle débute sa carrière en 1967 dès l’âge de 4 ans et plus tard elle s’impose dans beaucoup de films en langues régionales : Hindi, Tamoule, Télougou, Malayalam et Kannada. Cette actrice du sud de l’Inde manage sa carrière avec brio, elle évince très vite ses consœurs Hema Malini, Rekha et surtout Jaya Prada. Les plus grands noms du cinéma indien, réalisateurs et producteurs se l’arrachent : Yash Chopra, Harmesh Malhotra, Shekhar Kapoor,…Et entre autres, Boney Kapoor, avec lequel elle partage sa vie. Sridevi obtient son premier Filmfare Best Actress Award en 1981 avec Meedum Kokila (Tamoul) de G.N. Rangarajan. Son deuxième en 1989 avec Chaal Baaz (Hindi) de Pankaj Parashar et son troisième en 1991 avec Lamhe (Hindi) de Yash Chopra, également pour le même film, elle décroche l’International Film Academy’s Best Actress Award. Sans oublier aussi deux National Award Best Actress pour Moondram Pirai (Tamoul) / (Sadma remake en Hindi) de Balu Mahendra en 1983 et Kshana Kshanam (Télougu) / (Hairaan doublé en Hindi) de Ram Gopal Varma en 1991. Puis de nombreuses distinctions et nominations se poursuivent. Ses principaux hits en hindi se distinguent entre les années 80 et 90 avec « Himmatwala », « Sadma », « Nagina », « Karma » « Mr. India », « Chaalbaaz », « Chandni », « Lamhe », « Khuda Gawah » avec Amitabh Bachchan, « Judaai », « Army » où Figure Shahrukh Khan pour la première fois avec elle, en guest. Son atout premier : la danse à tous les registres et aussi son habilité à posséder plusieurs caractères notamment comique ce qui est rare chez une actrice « Bollywood ». Steven Spielberg aurait voulu l’avoir mais Sridevi déclina son offre dans Jurassic Park parce qu’il ne s’agissait pas du rôle principal. Après une période transitoire dans l’industrie du cinéma indien, elle revient cette fois sur le petit écran plus précisément sur la chaîne Sahara, en 2004, avec une série intitulée « Malini Iyer » que produit son mari Boney Kapoor, là aussi, un succès que l’on doit uniquement à sa prestation. Après plus de dix ans de règne sur Bollywood, Mollywood, Tollywood, Kollywood …Sridevi est devenue une productrice, notamment pour « Shakti : The Power » en 2002 de Krishna Vamshi, gros succès commercial avec Karisma Kapoor, notons une brève apparition d’Aishwarya Rai et de Shahrukh Khan. Sridevi produit également « Bewafa » de Dharmesh Darshan avec Anil Kapoor et Kareena Kapoor et dernièrement « Run » en 2004 de Jeeva avec Abhishek Bachchan. En parallèle, Sridevi veille sur sa progéniture : Jhanvi et Khushi, qui sait ? Deviendront-elles des futures reines de « Bollywood » ? 2012 signe son grand retour dans « English vinglish » de Gauri Shindé et c’est un grand succès international et la quête de nouveaux films pour elle.     Clare M. Wilkinson-Weber TAILORING EXPECTATIONS How film costumes become the audience’s clothes ‘Bollywood’ film costume has inspired clothing trends for many years. Female consumers have managed their relation to film costume through negotiations with their tailor as to how film outfits can be modified. These efforts have coincided with, and reinforced, a semiotic of female film costume where eroticized Indian clothing, and most forms of western clothing set the vamp apart from the heroine. Since the late 1980s, consumer capitalism in India has flourished, as have films that combine the display of material excess with conservative moral values. New film costume designers, well connected to the fashion industry, dress heroines in lavish Indian outfits and western clothes; what had previously symbolized the excessive and immoral expression of modernity has become an acceptable marker of global cosmopolitanism. Material scarcity made earlier excessive costume display difficult to achieve. The altered meaning of women’s costume in film corresponds with the availability of ready-to-wear clothing, and the desire and ability of costume designers to intervene in fashion retailing. Most recently, as the volume and diversity of commoditised clothing increases, designers find that sartorial choices ‘‘on the street’’ can inspire them, as they in turn continue to shape consumer choice. Introduction Film’s ability to stimulate consumption (responding to, and further stimulating certain kinds of commodity production) has been amply explored in the case of Hollywood (Eckert, 1990; Stacey, 1994).
