The Nutty Professor – from Julius Kelp to Sherman Klump
THE NUTTY PROFESSOR – FROM JULIUS KELP TO SHERMAN KLUMP: A TEXTUAL ANALYSIS OF SCIENCE AND SCIENTISTS IN TWO POPULAR FILMS by BEVERLY D. HARVEY (Under the Direction of Jay Hamilton) ABSTRACT This thesis examines the representation of science and scientists in two popular Hollywood films of the same title – The Nutty Professor. One version was released in 1963, starring Jerry Lewis, and the other was released in 1996, with Eddie Murphy. This study is a textual analysis with an emphasis on the “how” of representation within the two films, which serve as cultural artifacts of their respective time periods. In an attempt to gain a more in-depth understanding of the chosen representations of science and scientists in both films, I also study the historical context of the periods surrounding the production and release of each film. One goal of this thesis is to note any changes or similarities in the representation of science and scientists between the two films, which were produced and released more than thirty years apart. Carroll Date Professor of History Dr. Samuel Regalado Date Professor of History Dr. Marcy Rose Chvasta Date Professor of Communications © 2014 Kathleen Boone Chapman ALL RIGHTS RESERVED DEDICATION I am dedicating this work to my three dear friends: Ronda James, Candace Paulson, and Michele Sniegoski. Ronda’s encouragement and obedience to the Lord gave me what I needed to go back to school with significant health issues and so late in life. Candace, who graduated from Stanford “back in the olden days,” to quote our kids, inspired me to follow my dream and become all God wants me to be. Michele’s long struggle with terminal kidney disease motivated me to keep living in spite of my own health issues. We have laughed and cried together over many years, but all of you have given me strength to carry on. Sorry two of you made it to heaven before I could get this finished. I also want to give credit to my husband of forty years who has been a faithful breadwinner, proof-reader, and a paragon of patience. What more could any woman ask for? He has also put up with me yelling at my computer and cursing Bill Gates – A LOT. -

They seem like fun, easy projects, when in reality they are arduous ventures beset by countless pitfalls. The actor (whose creative labour produces the performances) can become obscured by the star (associated with existential qualities). It is difficult to accurately assess the industrial, cultural and aesthetic factors that shape audience perspectives and actors’ careers. There are no straightforward ways to connect star studies with accounts, for example, of African-American cinema. Even ‘star image’ is an ambiguous term. Martin Shingler notes that star studies can (and should) consider a host of issues, including ‘a performer’s star qualities and idiolect, their career trajectory … the significance of collaborators … the emergence of their type and star vehicles’ (2012: 183). Beyond this, these studies will show how ‘stars embody, incarnate or personify social groups or historical moments, [and negotiate] ideological contradictions that emerge within or between social groups’; on the flip side, they also aim to clarify ‘how certain types of audiences or members of a specific social group … have engaged with and made use of stars at particular historical moments’ (ibid.). Juggling disparate visions of stardom, these studies consider how a star functions as ‘an industrial marketing device’, a meaning- producing element within films and a working professional involved in the fields of art and performance (Gledhill 1991a: xiii). -

Bascomb, PhD ABSTRACT Race, class, and politics in film comedy have been debated in the field of African American culture and aesthetics, with scholars and filmmakers arguing the merits of narrative space without adequately addressing the issue of subversive agency of aesthetic expression by black film comedians. With special attention to the 1980-1989 work of comedian Eddie Murphy, this study will look at the film and television work found in this moment as an incisive cut in traditional Hollywood industry and narrative practices in order to show black comedic agency through aesthetic and cinematic narrative subversion. Through close examination of the film, Beverly Hills Cop (Brest, 1984), this project works to shed new light on the cinematic and standup trickster influences of comedy, and the little recognized existence of the 1980s as a decade that defines a base period for chronicling and inspecting the black aesthetic narrative subversion of American film comedy. -

Bamcinématek Presents Indie 80S, a Comprehensive, 60+ Film Series Highlighting the Decade Between 70S New Hollywood and the 90S Indie Boom, Jul 17—Aug 27
BAMcinématek presents Indie 80s, a comprehensive, 60+ film series highlighting the decade between 70s New Hollywood and the 90s indie boom, Jul 17—Aug 27 Co-presented by Cinema Conservancy The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor of BAM Rose Cinemas and BAMcinématek. Brooklyn, NY/June 11, 2015—From Friday, July 17 through Thursday, August 27, BAMcinématek and Cinema Conservancy present Indie 80s, a sweeping survey of nearly 70 films from the rough-and-tumble early days of modern American independent cinema. An aesthetic and political rebuke to the greed-is-good culture of bloated blockbusters and the trumped-up monoculture of Reagan-era America, Indie 80s showcases acclaimed works like Jim Jarmusch’s Stranger Than Paradise (1984—Jul 18), David Lynch’s Blue Velvet (1986—Aug 8), and Steven Soderbergh’s sex, lies, and videotape (1989—Aug 14) alongside many lesser- known but equally accomplished works that struggled to find proper distribution in the era before studio classics divisions. Filmmakers including Ross McElwee, William Lustig, Rob Nilsson, and more will appear in person to discuss their work. Like the returning expatriate’s odyssey in Robert Kramer’s four-hour road movie Route One/USA (1989—Aug 16), a sampling of 80s indie cinema comprises an expansive journey through the less-traveled byways of America. From the wintry Twin Cities of the improvised, hilariously profane road trip Patti Rocks (1988—Aug 25) to the psychopath’s stark Chicago hunting grounds in John McNaughton’s Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986—Jul 29) to the muggy Keys of Florida in filmmaker Victor Nuñez’s eco-thriller A Flash of Green (1984—Aug 12), regional filmmakers’ cameras canvassed an America largely invisible to Hollywood. -

Love Free Or Die, the Story of Gene Robinson, the First Openly Gay

Directed by Macky Alston, the film looks at church and state, love and marriage, faith and identity — and one man’s struggle to dispel the notion that God’s love has limits. Love Free or Die follows Gene Robinson, the first openly gay person to be elected bishop in the high church traditions of Christianity. His 2003 elevation, in the Episcopal diocese of New Hampshire, ignited a worldwide firestorm in the Anglican Communion that has threatened schism. Even as he has pushed for greater inclusion within his own church, Bishop Robinson has become a standard bearer in the fight over the rights of LGBT people to receive full acceptance in church and state. The film will premiere on Independent Lens, hosted by Stanley Tucci, on Monday, October 29, 2012 at 10 PM on PBS (check local listings). Director Alston’s camera follows Bishop Robinson as he steps onto the world stage, travelling from small-town churches to the Lincoln Memorial, where he delivers the invocation at Barack Obama’s inauguration; from London, where he is scorned and relegated to the fringes of a once- in-a-decade convocation of bishops to which he is deliberately not invited, to a decisive meeting in California of the Episcopal Church, where Robinson plays an instrumental role in establishing the full inclusion of LGBT people. -
