Alcott St., Kalamazoo, MI 49001 ability of hungry people to feed themselves. www.kzoolf.org What does Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes do? For over 27 years, KLF has been the main charitable source of emergency grocery/food assistance for hungry individuals and families in Kalamazoo County. Currently, KLF distributes groceries to people via 26 Grocery Pantry sites on a weekly basis. Through this network of pantries, well-balanced food resources are provided to individuals and families in need. How does the Grocery Pantry System Work? • Anyone in Kalamazoo County needing emergency food assistance can call the KLF Call Center at 343-FOOD (343-3663) Call Center Volunteers that take those calls will then refer clients to the pantry site most convenient to their location At the pantry, individuals and families will receive a 4 day supply of nutritional food (12 meals) based on the size of their household They choose grocery items that best fit the dietary needs of their household Clients may receive service every 30 days. Other Food Programs In addition to the Grocery Pantry Program, KLF provides food through the Supplemental Meal Support Program, which includes: Meal Programs: through Ministry with Community and the YWCA’s Domestic Assault Shelter Weekend Food Pack Program: provides food packs to targeted elementary school children through a partnership with Kalamazoo Communities in Schools Surplus Food Program: distributes no-cost commodity foods (primarily bread and produce) to local human service organizations The Changing Face of Hunger In 2008, KLF saw a huge increase in the number of people served through the Grocery Pantry Program. This increase includes “new faces” of people that either never expected to experience food insecurity or those that didn’t expect to experience it at such an ongoing pace. The population KLF serves includes: Students with one or more low-paying jobs; do I buy a book or food? Senior citizens on an inadequate fixed income Couples that struggle with job loss, a reduction in hours, or health care issues Poor and low-income families, who work only part-time hours but don’t qualify for other assistance KLF helps fill the gap so that these folks and others have access to food and can continue to lead a healthy, active life. 4 SpiritCup Competition Each year every RSO or team of students has the chance to win the Spirit Point Competition. It measures how well teams perform during the Homecoming week events. The team with the most points has the chance to win the coveted, “Brown and Gold Spirit Award!” Events: Your team can receive points for the following events: Canned Food Sculpture Contest Yell Like Hell Western Games Soapbox Derby Flag Run Court Nomination Guidelines: Your team will be awarded 5 points for each event in which you participate. If your team participates in all 6 events, it will be awarded an additional 25 points. Each event has its own individual scoring criteria. Five (5) bonus points will be awarded to your team if you nominate students who are chosen for Homecoming Court. Ten (10) bonus points will be added to your team for each of the students that are selected to be on the 2009 Homecoming Court. Prizes: First, second, and third place teams will be announced on Saturday, October 24, 2009 during the half- time show of the football game and will receive trophies and prizes recognizing their participation and achievement. Individual groups or University Departments that are not Registered Student Organizations can compete in the Spirit Point Competition, but they are not eligible to win the cash prize . They will instead receive prizes that are comparable in value. RSOs that pair/ partner to compete together must register as a “Team,” and not an RSO. For more information on how to register your RSO or Team, go to pages 21-22. We will also be hosting two Homecoming Info Nights in room 212 in the Bernhard Center on Monday, September 21, 2009 from 7-8 pm and on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 from 8-9 pm. 5 Qdoba Homecoming Kick-off Join us for free food from Qdoba Mexican Grill, music, contests and entertainment! Where: Goldsworth Valley Pond When: Monday, Oct. 19th starting at 5:30 p.m. Come down and enjoy some delicious Qdoba food at the Goldsworth Valley Pond! There will be music and entertainment in addition to a meet and greet session with the 2009 Homecoming Court. Top off the night with a live performance by the band Living the Dream and you’ll have spent a perfect night kicking off the Homecoming week! Timeline: Food will be served starting at 5:45 p.m. Canned Food Sculpture Competition at 6:00 p.m. Meet and Greet with the 2009 Homecoming Court at 6:15 p.m. Performance by Living the Dream at 7:30 p.m. Homecoming Philanthropy: This year Homecoming is very proud to be supporting the Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes! For over 27 years they have been the main charitable source of grocery/ food assistance for hungry individuals and families in Kalamazoo County. You can help combat hunger in Kalamazoo by participating in the Canned Food Sculpture Competition or by dropping off non-perishable food items at the following events: Western Wednesday, Yell Like Hell, or Miller Movie. Homecoming philanthropy drop-off will be open from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at the Kickoff. 6 Canned Food Sculpture Competition Where: Goldsworth Valley Pond during the Qdoba Homecoming Kick-off When: Monday, Oct. 19th @ 6:00 p.m. Registration: The deadline for registration is Friday, October 9, 2009 @ 5 p.m. The entry form and Code of Conduct on pages 24-26 of this packet can be submitted to the Office of Student Activities and Leadership Programs in Room 194 of the RSO Center in the Bernhard Center. General Instructions: Sculptures must be built during the allotted half hour build time during the Qdoba Homecoming Kick-off from 5:45-6:45 p.m. Teams may come early to prep, but absolutely no assembly can occur until the allotted building time has begun. Failure to comply may result in a deduction of points. Sculptures must comprise of at least ten non-perishable food items. (See page 8 for scoring guidelines.) All labels must remain intact visible for the final product. Once time has expired, all team members must step away from the sculpture and it will be judged according to its free-standing condition. Bracing material may be used though it cannot hinder the visibility of any labels. After sculptures have been judged teams are responsible for the disassembly of their own sculptures. All non-perishable food items must be then put into the proper container, which will be explained and marked at the event. Failure to do so may result in a deduction of points. 7 Competition continued Scoring Guidelines: Each non-perishable food item that is on Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes’ wish list are worth more points, and the scoring is as follows: Proteins: 1. Canned Tuna=2 points each 2. Canned Chicken=2 points each 3. Beef Stew=2 points each 4. Mac & Cheese=2 points each 5. Pork and Beans or Baked Beans=2 points each Fruits and Vegetables: 1. Canned Fruit=2 points each 2. 100% Fruit Juice=2 points each 3. Spaghetti Sauce=2 points each Other: 1. Powdered Soy and/or Milk-based formula (12.9 oz. or more only)=2 points each 2.

The Office of Institutional Research produced Western's first statistical summary in 1974 and labeled it a Statistical Review. Since then it has undergone title changes and significant growth, but its focus and primary use is still as an internal document that allows its users to have appropriate data at their fingertips. This information can assist in developing research proposals, preparing for accreditation visits and departmental planning, as well as a source for answering surveys and other questions about the University.
