This publication continues to represent our efforts to provide you with historically comparable, accurate and detailed information about Western Michigan University. The Office of Institutional Research produced Western's first statistical summary in 1974 and labeled it a Statistical Review. Since then it has undergone title changes and significant growth, but its focus and primary use is still as an internal document that allows its users to have appropriate data at their fingertips. This information can assist in developing research proposals, preparing for accreditation visits and departmental planning, as well as a source for answering surveys and other questions about the University. We hope you find it useful and we welcome your suggestions and comments. Sincerely, Jan W. Lyddon, Ph.D., Director Peninnah S. Miller, Director, Institutional Research Andrew C. History: Established by legislative act in 1903 as Western State Normal School, the first classes were held in 1904. The first permanent building, completed in 1905, overlooked the city frorn Prospect Hill. By the 1920's Western had become one of America's leading teachers' colleges. Starting in 1934, general degree work independent of teacher certification was offered. An expansion program on the west campus began in 1944. Increasing enrollment and the addition of new departments and courses during the 1940's and 1950's made Western a multi-purpose institution and led to its designation as a university in 1957 by an act of the legislature.
