No apology is needed, I hope, for issuing in this form the substance of the series of articles which I contributed to the Bible Educator. Some of the statements which I brought forward in that work have received further con- firmation by wider reading; but some others I have ventured to qualify or alter. Much new matter will be fotmd here which I trust may be of interest to the general reader, if not of use to the professional. I fully anticipate a criticism to the effect that such a subject as the development of musical instruments should rather have been allowed to stand alone than have been associated with Bible music. But I think all will admit that the study of the history of ancient nations, whether with reference to their arts, religion, conquests, or language, seems to gather and be concentrated round the Book of Books, and when once I began to treat of the com- parative history of musical instruments, I felt that a few more words, tracing their growth up to our own times, would make this little work more complete and useful than if I should deal only with the sparse records of Hebrew music. -

S c h u b a r t a n d F a b i a n H e r d e r 12.1 Introduction Some of the world’s most spectacular species radiations or species fl ocks are found in so-called ‘ancient lakes’. Th ese are long-lived lakes that have existed for 100 000 years (Gorthner et al. 1994 , but see also Albrecht and Wilke 2008 ) or more (e.g. Lake Tanganyika and Lake Baikal). Ancient lakes are justifi ably regarded as hotspots of diversifi cation (e.g. Martens 1997 , Rossiter and Kawanabe 2000 ), even if not all ancient lake species fl ocks match the diversity of the super-fl ock of East African cichlids (e.g. Kornfi eld and Smith 2000 , Kocher 2004 ). Studies on the evo- lution of ancient lake organisms have continuously resulted in important insights into general patterns of speciation and radiation (e.g. Streelman and Danley 2003 ) ever since the seminal review of Brooks ( 1950 ). During the last decade, smaller ancient lakes (c. <1 000 km 2 ), which are generally less well investigated, have attracted increasing attention. -

Gaimard) on Silver eel Phase from Palu River and Poso Lake Jamaluddin*, Cindra Rusli, Yonelian Yuyun and Agustinus Widodo Department of Pharmacy, Mathematics and Natural Science of Faculty, Tadulako University, Palu, Central Sulawesi, (Postal: 94118), Indonesia Abstract: Amino acid is an organic component containing amine and carboxyl groups. Amino acids are needed by the human body. One animal that has the amino acid content is eel (Anguilla marmorata (Q.) Gaimard) from Palu River and Poso Lake in Central Sulawesi which are endemic fish. This study aims to determine the comparison of amino acid profile in eel (Anguilla marmorata (Q.) Gaimard) on silver eel phase. Testing amino acid profile using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The results showed that the eel (Anguilla marmorata (Q.) Gaimard) on phase of silver eel from the Palu River and Poso Lake contained 18 kinds of amino acid consisting of 9 kinds of essential amino acids and 9 types of non-essential amino acids. Data comparison shows a significant difference in glycine P = 0.000 and has no significant differences in the valine at P = 0.132. Keywords: Amino acid, Anguilla marmorata, silver eel. Topics include phonology (the sound system and phenomena such as stress, contraction, nasalization and paragogic vowels), morphology (affixes), certain word classes with closed membership (pronouns, deictics, numerals), and finally his thoughts concerning the etymologies of selected words. Kinzer iii University of Washington Abstract Bodies of Sound, Agents of Muslim Malayness: Malaysian Identity Politics and the Symbolic Ecology of the Gambus Lute Joseph M. Kinzer Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Dr. Christina Sunardi Music In this dissertation, I show how Malay-identified performing arts are used to fold in Malay Muslim identity into the urban milieu, not as an alternative to Kuala Lumpur’s contemporary cultural trajectory, but as an integrated part of it. I found this identity negotiation occurring through secular performance traditions of a particular instrument known as the gambus (lute), an Arabic instrument with strong ties to Malay history and trade. During my fieldwork, I discovered that the gambus in Malaysia is a potent symbol through which Malay Muslim identity is negotiated based on various local and transnational conceptions of Islamic modernity. My dissertation explores the material and virtual pathways that converge a number of historical, geographic, and socio-political sites—including the National Museum and the National Conservatory for the Arts, iv Culture, and Heritage—in my experiences studying the gambus and the wider transmission of muzik Melayu (Malay music) in urban Malaysia. I argue that the gambus complicates articulations of Malay identity through multiple agentic forces, including people (musicians, teachers, etc.), the gambus itself (its materials and iconicity), various governmental and non-governmental institutions, and wider oral, aural, and material transmission processes. -

A cim- balom típusú hangszerek eredete még nem teljesen feltárt. A legtöbb szerző keleti eredetűnek tartja a hangszert, ám az elnevezések áttekintése arra mutat, hogy több- szörös átvétellel és oda-vissza hatásokkal kell számolni. Farkas Györgyi a cimba- lom történetét bemutató könyvében azt fejtegeti, hogy a négyszög alakú pszaltérium az arab nuzhából, a féltrapéz alakú pedig az arab qanunból fejlődött ki. (Farkas 1996, 23–26.) Hortense Panum a középkori európai pszaltérium ősének a perzsa-arab kanunt és a szantirt tartja. (Panum 1970, 146.) A perzsa-arab kanun el- nevezése viszont a görög kánon=szabály, mérték kifejezésre vezethető vissza. Fran- cis W Galpin szintén a perzsa szantirból származtatja az európai pszaltériumot. (Galpin 1965, 43.) Habib Hasszán Touma az arab hangszereket bemutató könyvé- ben viszont rámutat, hogy a perzsa-arab szantur elnevezés a görög pszalterion szó- — روتنس ból származik. (Tuoma 2003, 125.) Ezért kérdéses, hogy a perzsa szantur, vagyis „száz húr” hangszerelnevezés az ógörög kifejezés későbbi magya- rázata vagy a görög pszalterion terminustól eltérő, önálló elnevezése a hangszertí- pusnak. Görögországban az ütött húros szandoki hangszertípus elnevezése a perzsa szantur vagyis „száz húr” hangszerelnevezés átvételére utal. Az ógörög — روتنس κανών ,,szabály, mérték” elnevezés viszont a fogólap nélküli, pengetett kanonaki hangszer elnevezésében maradt fenn.
