Michael Harrington In this dissertation, I phenomenologically clarify the theory on moral effort (gongfu 功夫) of the sixteenth-century Chinese philosopher Wang Yangming (or Wang Shouren 王陽明/王守仁 1472-1529). For Wang, the final purpose of moral effort is to cultivate one’s heart (xin 心) as the subject of consciousness, with the goal of sagehood. The heart is also the foundation on which all methods of moral effort can rely. I argue that Husserl’s phenomenology can shed a light on Wang’s doctrine, for it describes the transcendental structure of all aspects related to consciousness, which are also topics and phenomena studied by Wang’s philosophy. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENT First of all, I would like to give my gratitude to my committee members: Dr. Michael Harrington, my director; Dr. Lanei Rodemeyer and Dr. Jay Lampert, my readers.   • The Status of Cosmic Principle (Li) in Neo-Confucian Metaphysics
    jeeloo liu THE STATUS OF COSMIC PRINCIPLE (LI) IN NEO-CONFUCIAN METAPHYSICS Introduction In this article, I attempt to make use of Western metaphysical notions to explicate the cosmological variances in Chinese philosophical thinking, with specific reference to the debates among the Neo- Confucian thinkers. While I do not presume and argue that Chinese philosophers dealt with the same Western issues, I do believe that a comparative study of this nature can point to a new direction of think- ing concerning metaphysical pondering in Neo-Confucianism. This article is divided into three parts. In Part I, I employ Robert Nozick’s notion of natural cosmic state to analyze the fundamental difference between the Confucian and Daoist cosmologies. Even though this notion of natural cosmic state has no comparable match in Chinese philosophy, it may serve as an analytic and explanatory device for our comparative study of Chinese cosmology. In Part II, I employ Nicholas Rescher’s distinction between “laws of nature” and “laws for nature” to analyze the debate on the status of cosmic prin- ciple (li)a between Zhou Dunyib and Zhu Xic on the one hand, and Zhang Zaid and Wang Fuzhie on the other.1 In Part III, I employ the notion of supervenience,as defined by Jaegwon Kim,to argue that in the debate on the status of cosmic principle, it is Zhang Zai and Wang Fuzhi’s view that better preserves the causal relevance of cosmic principle in a physicalistic universe.2 In light of the three notions borrowed from contemporary Western metaphysics, I hope to offer an analytic reconstruction of the age-old debate on the status of cosmic principle (li).

    Neo-Confucianism: Metaphysics, Mind, and Morality BOOK PROSPECTUS JeeLoo Liu CONTENTS: SUMMARY OF CHAPTERS Since these selected Neo-Confucians had similar philosophical concerns and their various philosophical positions were based on largely the same Confucian classics, the best way to capture their philosophical variances is to present their views thematically rather than chronologically. The structure of this book lays out the metaphysical foundations for Neo-Confucian theories of mind and morality. The major common themes in Neo- Confucianism include: 1) The relationship between the two constituents of the universe—cosmic principle (li) and cosmic force (qi); 2) The debate on whether human nature, or human mind, is the exemplification of this cosmic principle; 3) The analysis of the roots of human good and evil as a way to answer the question of what makes human morality possible. This book is divided into three parts, which deal with these three issues as they evolved from one Neo-Confucian philosopher to the next. The eight philosophers’ views are presented in three segments, as this arrangement best captures both the focus of their disagreements and the continuity of the philosophical development of Neo-Confucianism. Part I. Neo-Confucian Metaphysics: from Cosmology to Ontology Neo-Confucians were generally concerned with establishing a moralistic cosmology, or we can say what they developed was a form of moral metaphysics. In their view, there is a higher order governing the cosmos, which they call ‘heavenly principle’, and this higher order has many moral attributes. At the same time, Neo-Confucians also embraced the Chinese philosophical tradition (founded in Yijing) of positing a cosmic force (qi) as the material/physical foundation of the universe.

Falun Gong, also called Falun Dafa, is a traditional Chinese spiritual practice that includes exercise and meditation. Its principles are based on the values of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance. The practice began in China in 1992 and quickly spread throughout China and then beyond. By the end of 1998, by the Chinese government's own estimate, there were 70 - 100 million people in China who had taken up the practice, outnumbering Communist Party member. Despite the fact that it was good for the people and for the stability of the country, former President JIANG Zemin launched in July 1999 an unprecedented persecution of Faun Gong out of fears of losing control. Today the persecution of Falun Gong still continues in China. As of the end of March 2004, 918 Falun Gong practitioners have been confirmed to die from persecution.

    Conceptions of genuine knowledge in Wang Yangming* Harvey Lederman August 6, 2021 Abstract This paper studies one aspect of the great Ming dynasty philosopher Wang Yang- ming’s (王陽明 1472-1529) celebrated doctrine of the unity of knowledge and ac- tion (zhi xing he yi 知行合一). Wang states that his doctrine does not apply to all knowledge, but only to an elevated form of knowledge, which he sometimes calls “genuine knowledge” (zhen zhi 真知). But what is “genuine knowledge”? I de- velop and compare four different interpretations of this notion: the perceptual, practical, normative and introspective models. The main aim of the paper is to de- velop these models in more detail than has been done before. But at the end of the paper I argue that the introspective model is to be preferred over the alternatives. Keywords: unity of knowledge and action, liangzhi, conscience, Wang Yangming, Neo- Confucianism, Chinese Philosophy 1 Introduction Wang Shouren (王守仁, Yangming 陽明 1472-1529) is widely recognized as the most influential philosopher of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and one of the most important philosophers in the whole tradition now called “Confucian”. Some of Wang’s most celebrated doctrines concern the relationship between knowledge and virtuous action. Wang claimed that his Song dynasty predecessors had held that a person can act vir- tuously only if they first determine that their action will be virtuous by applying their knowledge of general moral laws to their predicament. Since on this picture, knowl- edge of moral laws must precede virtuous action, the view was associated with the slogan that knowledge comes first, and action later.

    Book Review The Past, Present and Future of Confucian Political Philosophy —Evaluation of Professor Ouyang Zhenren's From Nature of Mind to Politics Yang Yongtao1 Professor Ouyang Zhenren's new book From Nature of Mind to Politics was published by China Social Sciences Press (Beijing) in 2017, which is a major breakthrough in the academic research on Confucian mind philosophy. At the same time, the publication of this monograph represents the latest trend and frontier achievements in the study of Confucian political philosophy. What does Confucian political philosophy say? What should be its core concern? How can people promote the future development of Confucian political philosophy? These three questions run through Professor Ouyang's From Nature of Mind to Politics. In recent years, there have been a lot of discussions on "Mind Confucianism" and "Political Confucianism" in academic circles, but the differences between them have been emphasized, which actually separates the inherent state of Confucianism. Only by grasping the internal connection from "nature of mind" to "politics" and observing the connection and prominence of "Xiu Shen( 修身)", can we better understand the essence of Confucian political philosophy, which is also Professor Ouyang's concern in writing. The book is divided into six parts: "From Nature of Mind to Politics", "Insight into Confucian political philosophy", "Nature and Evolution of The Book of Filial Piety", "Confucianism advanced in comparison", "From Confucius and Mencius to Lu Jiuyuan" and "From Confucius and Mencius to Wang Yangming". This work combines historical data with theory very well and finds ideas that many people did't see, so it can be said to be a rare and excellent study of Confucian political philosophy.

Abstract This paper presents a new interpretation of the great Ming dynasty philosopher Wang Yangming’s (1472-1529) doctrine of the “unity of knowledge and action” (知行合㆒). Wang held that action was not unified with all knowledge, but only with an elevated form of knowledge, which he sometimes called “genuine knowl- edge”. My interpretation focuses on a new understanding of this notion, according to which a person has genuine knowledge if and only if they are free from a partic- ular form of doxastic conflict. I argue that Wang believed that a person is free from this form of doxastic conflict if and only if they are free from a form of motivational conflict. I suggest that Wang held moreover that a person is free from this form of motivational conflict if and only if they are acting virtuously. Thus, my interpreta- tion helps to explain how Wang could hold that a person has genuine knowledge if and only if they are acting virtuously. 1 Introduction In 1508, in exile in Longchang in Guiyang, Wang Shouren (王守仁, Yangming 陽明 1472-1529) experienced a “great enlightenment” (大悟), when a voice seemed to call out to him in the night. In the following year, Wang distilled this dramatic revelation in the doctrine of the “unity of knowledge and action” (zhi xing he yi 知行合㆒).1 The 1I follow tradition in translating he yi 合㆒ as “unity” in this slogan.

Elman Received: 12 May 2008 /Accepted: 12 May 2008 # National Science Council, Taiwan 2008 Abstract This article first reviews the political, economic, and cultural context within which Japanese during the Tokugawa era (1600–1866) mastered Kanbun 漢 文 as their elite lingua franca. Sino-Japanese cultural exchanges were based on prestigious classical Chinese texts imported from Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) China via the controlled Ningbo-Nagasaki trade and Kanbun texts sent in the other direction, from Japan back to China. The role of Japanese Kanbun teachers in presenting language textbooks for instruction and the larger Japanese adaptation of Chinese studies in the eighteenth century is then contextualized within a new, socio-cultural framework to understand the local, regional, and urban role of the Confucian teacher–scholar in a rapidly changing Tokugawa society. Wang, Wanying The University of British Columbia Email: [email protected] Abstract I address three aspects of ancient Chinese philosophical thought and Pinar’s currere that seem to resonate. The ancient Chinese philosophical thought that will be discussed refers mainly to that advanced by Wang Yangming, Mencius and Lao Tzu. This thought includes pure knowing (Liangzhi), ge xin (investigation of mind/heart) and voidness. In this study I examine three affinities between: 1), pure knowing and pre-conceptual, 2), ge xin and working from within, and 3), voidness and invisibility. Each pair of concepts, which are from Ancient Chinese philosophical thought and currere, respectively attend to pre-conceptual realm, adopt turning inward attitude, and notice the unnoticed. The two ideas are different in some ways, and such differences will be discussed in the paper. This study may improve the level of objectivity of currere by identifying the connection and showing the convergence of the two ideas; and I argue certain thoughts tend to transcend the boundary between the East and the West. The association of the two thoughts further illustrates the value of currere, provides a more international understanding of currere, and hears in a different key the soundness of currere.
