MMOORRAAVVIIAANN MMUUSSIICC FFOOUUNNDDAATTIIOONN NNEEWWSSLLEETTTTEERR PRESERVING, CELEBRATING, AND CULTIVATING THE MUSICAL LIFE OF THE MORAVIANS The Moravian Music Foundation preserves, celebrates, and cultivates VOL. XXIV the musical life of the Moravians. NO. 1 Preserving, celebrating, Richard Saunders receives cultivating Salzwedel Award The MMF Board of Trustees has adopted a revision of our 14-year-old mission statement! Adopted in 1994, the “old” statement has served us well – Preserving, sharing, and celebrating the musical culture of Moravians – and the new one includes a more active metaphor: rather than sharing, the Board acknowledged that MMF cultivates the musical life of the Moravians. The Board recognized that preservation remains an integral part of MMF’s work: taking care of the irreplaceable music and documents in our custody, and interpreting our past, bringing it into the present. Celebration remains a joyful aspect of our work: concerts, Festivals, events of various sorts that lift up the Moravian musical life in rejoicing and thanksgiving. The new metaphor of cultivation carries resonances Richard “Dick” Saunders (left), the latest recipient of the James V. of gardening – planting, tilling, nurturing – and of Salzwedel Award for Excellence in Church Music, shaking hands organic growth and fruitfulness. Page 2 Moravian Music Foundation NEWSLETTER Spring 2009 Cultivating… Publications We are absolutely delighted to announce the publication, in July of 2008, of David Moritz Michael’s Der 103te Psalm (Psalm 103) in the Recent Researches in American Music series of A-R editions, newly edited by former MMF Director Dr. Karl Kroeger. A-R Editions’ introductory material for this new publication includes this information: “David Moritz Michael composed his setting of Psalm 103 in 1805 for performance by the Collegium Musicum at Nazareth, of which he was music director. Cast in eleven short movements, the cantata opens and closes with impressive, dramatic choruses. Between these pillars, solo ariettas and shorter choral sections praise God’s grace and benevolence. Set for alto, tenor, and bass soloists, mixed chorus, and a small orchestra, it is the earliest cantata-like work by an American-Moravian composer and possibly the earliest such work composed in the United States. The cantata makes only modest technical demands on the vocal and instrumental forces and should be attractive to performers and audience alike.” See http://www.areditions.com/rr/rra/a065.html for more information! Another A-R Editions publication using sources from Moravian musical collections is the Surviving Orchestral Music by Philadelphia-born composer Charles Hommann (1803-1872), edited by Joanne Swenson-Eldridge from works in the Philharmonic Society of Bethlehem collection. Congratulations to both these editors, and to all who work to bring this rich musical heritage to the voices and instruments (and ears!) of today’s musicians! 2008 Board of Trustees Moravian Star Anthem Series update Honorary Trustees Helen C.
