Lowther, Field Museum Brood parasitism is an awkward term to describe an interaction between two species in which, as in predator-prey relationships, one species gains at the expense of the other. Brood parasites "prey" upon parental care. Victimized species usually have reduced breeding success, partly because of the additional cost of caring for alien eggs and young, and partly because of the behavior of brood parasites (both adults and young) which may directly and adversely affect the survival of the victim's own eggs or young. About 1% of all bird species, among 7 families, are brood parasites. The 5 species of brood parasitic “cowbirds” are currently all treated as members of the genus Molothrus. Host selection is an active process. Not all species co-occurring with brood parasites are equally likely to be selected nor are they of equal quality as hosts. Rather, to varying degrees, brood parasites are specialized for certain categories of hosts. Brood parasites may rely on a single host species to rear their young or may distribute their eggs among many species, seemingly without regard to any characteristics of potential hosts. Lists of species are not the best means to describe interactions between a brood parasitic species and its hosts. Such lists do not necessarily reflect the taxonomy used by the brood parasites themselves nor do they accurately reflect the complex interactions within bird communities (see Ortega 1998: 183-184). Host lists do, however, offer some insight into the process of host selection and do emphasize the wide variety of features than can impact on host selection. -

E-mail: [email protected] * Corresponding author:[email protected] Abstract The Atlantic Forest is one of the most threatened biodiversity hotspots in the world due to habitat fragmentation. Restoration and connectivity of forest fragments are crucial to maintain viable populations of forest-dependent species. During winter and summer, we studied the bird diversity, its components and composition (including specialist and generalist species) in three different vegetation types: mature forest (MF), secondary forest (SF) and grassland (G) of an ecological corridor in Misiones, Argentina. We determined the influence of alpha diversity (of each habitat) and beta diversity (species turnover between habitats) on gamma diversity (regional diversity in the corridor), to provide conservation management recommendations. MF showed the highest values of bird diversity, richness, evenness and abundance, followed by SF and G, in both seasons. Only MF showed a possible seasonal variation in diversity and richness. The species composition of SF was similar to MF. -

Later radiations within the family appeared to be characterized by transitions from forests toward more open habitats, and such transitions also correlated positively with increased preformative molt investment, plumage signaling, and flight. While previous studies had highlighted the role of time and energy constraints in the evolution of the preformative molt in passerines, we conclude that adaptation to the physical environment has had a greater influence than constraints on the evolution of this molt in Cardinalidae. Using molt data from 430 individuals from 41 of the 51 Cardinalidae species, we tested whether social and environmental factors (delayed plumage maturation and habitat openness), as well as that of physiological and time constraints (body mass, migration distance, and breeding latitude), have influenced the evolution of the preformative molt in this family. -

PURPLE-WINGED GROUND-DOVE Claravis godefrida E/Ex4 Probably a bamboo specialist, this unobtrusive ground-dove has become extremely rare in the forests of south-east Brazil, eastern Paraguay and northern Argentina, and has doubtless suffered from the fragmentation of its habitat and the increasing infrequency of bamboo flowerings. Studies are needed to clarify its needs, if a population can ever be found. DISTRIBUTION The Purple-winged Ground-dove is endemic to the Atlantic forest region of south- eastern South America, extending from southern Bahia (no records this century) and eastern Minas Gerais south through Espírito Santo to Santa Catarina (no records this century) in Brazil into eastern Paraguay and Misiones, Argentina. Brazil Records of this species suggest that its centre of distribution lay from eastern Minas Gerais south to São Paulo, but current localities are very few and unpredictable (see Ecology). Bahia The only records (though at a time when the species was well known to the local people) are from the rio Belmonte (now Jequitinhonha, and including Ilha Cachoeirinha) (whence a specimen in AMNH) and rio Mucuri in the south (Wied 1820-1821, 1833, Pinto 1949), apart from one specimen in BMNH (Salvadori 1893) and one in MNHG from unspecified localities. Espírito Santo The only records are from Santa Teresa in May 1956 (specimen in MNRJ) and the Augusto Ruschi (Nova Lombardia) Biological Reserve (in Santa Teresa), where a single bird was seen in winter 1986 (C. E. Carvalho in litt. 1987). Tropical Birding - Trip Report Oaxaca: Birding the Heart of Mexico, March 2019 A Tropical Birding SET DEPARTURE tour Oaxaca: Birding the Heart of Mexico 6 – 16 March 2019 Isthmus Extension 16 – 22 March 2019 TOUR LEADER: Nick Athanas Report by Nick Athanas; photos are Nick’s unless marked otherwise Warblers were plentiful on this tour, such as the superb endemic Red Warbler March in much of the Northern Hemisphere was rather dreary, but in southern Mexico we enjoyed day after day of warm, sunny days and cool, pleasant evenings – it was a wonderful and bird-filled reprieve from winter for the whole group including me. The tour visited the dry Oaxaca Valley (rich in culture as well as endemics), the high mountains surrounding it, lush cloudforest and rainforest on the Gulf slope, and dry forest along the Pacific. This provided a great cross-section of the habitats and offered fantastic birds everywhere. Some favorites included Bumblebee Hummingbird, Dwarf Jay, Orange-breasted Bunting, and a daily fix of warblers, both resident and migrant, like the unique Red Warbler shown above. The extension took us east across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, which serves as a natural species barrier. Numerous different species entertained us like Pink-headed Warbler, Rose-bellied Bunting, and a Nava’s Wren which put on an especially magnificent performance. Owling was a mixed bag, but our first attempt got us a spectacular Fulvous Owl, which was high up on the list of tour favorites. It sits atop 900-foot Semaphore Hill overlooking Soberania National Park. While its rooms are rather spartan, the food is Panama’s Canopy Tower © Ruthie Stearns excellent and the opportunity to view birds at dawn from the 360º rooftop Observation Deck above the treetops is outstanding. Twenty minutes away is the start of the famous Pipeline Road, possibly one of the best birding roads in Central and South America. From our base, daily birding outings are made to various locations in Central Panama, which vary from the primary forest around the tower, to huge mudflats near Panama City and, finally, to cool Cerro Azul and Cerro Jefe forest. An enticing example of what awaits visitors to this marvelous birding paradise can be found in excerpts taken from the Journal I write during every tour and later e- mail to participants. These are taken from my 17-page, January 2019 Journal. On our first day at Canopy Tower, with 5 of the 8 participants having arrived, we were touring the Observation Deck on top of Canopy Tower when Ruthie looked up and called my attention to a bird flying in our direction...it was a Black Hawk-Eagle! I called down to others on the floor below and we watched it disappear into the distant clouds. -

The biological species concept (BSC) and phylogenetic species concept (PSC) have typically been set in opposition, with extensive debate on the relative merits of each. An alternative is the evolutionary species concept (ESC), which offers a perspective similar to that of the PSC, yet with several significant differences. To date, no major avifauna has been examined and compared among taxonomic viewpoints. Herein, we develop an alternative phylogenetic/evolutionary species taxonomy to the current BSC treatment for the more than 1000 bird species of Mexico. A total of 135 biological species was divided to produce a total of 323 phylogenetic/evolutionary species, 122 of which represent “new” endemic forms in Mexico.
