In Mesopotamia, nel 3.500 a.C., esistevano maiali già addomesticati da tempo. Egizi, Greci e Romani il "porco" è sempre stato tenuto in gran conto. La letteratura classica è piena di riferimenti al maiale ed al suo allevamento. Nel Medioevo l'allevamento suino brado assunse un ruolo di primo piano.
