Sie ist das erste britische Linienschiff, welches im Ersten Weltkrieg durch Feindeinwirkung verloren geht. 1917: Das deutsche U-Boot SM UB 47 versenkt den britischen Truppentransporter HMT In- vernia etwa 58 Seemeilen südöstlich von Kap Matapan. 1943: Der amerikanische Frachter Arthur Middleton wird vor dem Hafen von Casablanca von dem deutschen U-Boot U 73 durch zwei Torpedos getroffen. Das zu einem Konvoi gehörende Schiff ist mit Munition und Sprengstoff beladen und versinkt innerhalb einer Minute nach einer Explosion der Ladung. 1995: Die automatische Wellenmessanlage der norwegischen Ölbohrplattform Draupner-E meldet in einem Sturm eine Welle mit einer Höhe von 26 Metern. "Heil mein Führer. Sie sind verhaftet!" February 1943: After the fall of Stalingrad Stalin ordered to execute the Operation Stern. It was aimed to enclose and destroy the Heeresgruppen A, B and Don. A kind of Superstalingrad. The Soviets were advancing and Manstein already had a plan to make a counterstrike. However, therefore he had to retreat in some parts. Especially Charkow. Here Hitler vetoed that. He wanted to keep Charkow. Manstein needed the forces there and on February 16th indeed the SS units defending Charkow retreated. Hitler was furious. Instead of flying to Poltawa, where he was going to meet Col. Hyazinth Graf Strachwitz von Groß-Zauche und Camminetz, he flew to Manstein to Saporoschje. What Hitler didn't know: Strachwitz, although member in the SS, was there to arrest and likely kill Hitler as part of Operation Walküre. As Plan B a bomb in a bottle of Cognac was smuggled into the Fw 200 of Hitler. Because the British detonator did not cope with the low temperatures the bomb did not explode... And here is the PoD: 17.02.1943: Hiter wants to fly to Saporoschje, but only after he visited Strachwitz. He wanted to let Manstein wait for him and to show him, who is the Gröfaz (Größter Feldherr aller Zeiten, biggest general of all times). "Mein Führer, Sie sind verhaftet!" The flight was long from Berlin to Poltawa. Hitler was glad to have landed. He was not glad about the war situation however. The Soviets were advancing. And Manstein wanted to retreat. Retreat! That was nearly treachery. -
South Stoker 1St Class W J Brinkworth
Name: William John Brinkworth Position: Stoker 1st Class DOB-DOD: 1907 – 11 April 1940 In 1940, William John Brinkworth was a stoker in the Royal Navy, working aboard HMS Eclipse. In April, HMS Eclipse was deployed to escort the North West Approaches. 8 days later, the ship was detached from convoy escort duties and sent to Norway in support of allied military operations, including screening duties and attached to 20th Destroyer Flotilla. On 11 April 1940 HMS Eclipse was damaged in an air attack on Fleet unites off the Norwegian coast. The air attacks caused major flooding and sadly many men, including William John Brinkworth lost their lives. Although the ship survived the attack it was abandoned and later towed to Lerwick in the Shettland Islands by her sister ship, HMS Escort (a journey which took five and a half days). HMS Hyperion was deployed as escort during the passage. HMS Eclipse was eventually taken in hand for repair on the Clyde shipyard. William was remembered by his parents Mr. and Mrs. W. Brinkworth and his wife Edith Brinkworth, of Stoke-on-Trent. His name is also recorded on a memorial situated in Stoke Telecom Hse and is also commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial. HMS Eclipse was an E-Class Fleet Destroyer ordered on 1st November 1932 from Denny at Dumbarton under the 1931 Build Programme. The ship was laid down on 22nd March 1932 and launched on 12th April 1934 as the tenth RN ship to carry the name introduced in 1715. It was last used for a Trawler during WW1. -

Lawrence Mackie's Letters Home During World War 2
Lawrence Mackie’s letters home during World War 2 transcribed and edited by his son Peter Mackie The letters in this collection were written by Lawrence Mackie, George’s brother, during the Second World War. Lawrence enlisted with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, and after basic training and gaining his Commission he saw active service on a Motor Launch and Destroyer and took part in the D Day operations in Normandy. The letters were passed from Lawrence’s parents to my mother Elizabeth, and I have tried to sort and transcribe them in chronological order. This has not always been easy because some of the letters are undated and the writing has become illegible in places. Nevertheless they give a detailed account of naval life during those years, with full and sometimes very frank descriptions of their activities. After the war Lawrence returned to his medical training at St John’s College, Oxford, and then entered General Practice in Warwickshire. This issue is also in honor to all the people all over the world who built ships, planes, tanks, trucks, jeeps, guns, ammo and all things needed to win a war against the ruthless killers. Thanks to the farmers who fed us all. Thank God for seeing us through. Maritime Disasters of WWII 1939 ATHENIA (September 3, 1939) The first civilian casualty of World War II, the Cunard passenger liner Athenia of 13,581 tons, (chartered from the Anchor Donaldson Line) was sunk without warning west of Scotland by the German submarine U-30 (Oblt. Fritz- Julius Lemp) on the opening day of the Second World War, the captain believing it to be an armed merchant cruiser. The ship was carrying evacuees from Liverpool to Canada. There were 1,103 passengers not including crewmembers. Survivors were rescued by the British destroyers Electra, Escort and Fame and the freighters City of Flint the yacht Southern Cross and the Norwegian tanker Knute Nelson which brought its survivors to Galway. In all, 118 passengers were drowned. Also on board were 316 Americans of whom 28 were lost. Oblt. Lemp was never court-martialled for this error but next day Hitler ordered that under no circumstances were attacks to be made on passenger ships. The City of Flint (4,963 tons) was later torpedoed (on January 25, 1943) with the loss of seven lives. On May 9, 1941, Oblt. Fritz Lemp and fifteen of his crew were lost when the U-boat he then commanded, the U-110, was captured. This was the most important prize of the war. She was carrying the much sought after Enigma machine which helped Britain to break the top secret German military codes. HMS COURAGEOUS (September 17, 1939) The 22,500 ton light cruiser, later converted to an escort carrier, commanded by Capt. W.T. Makeig-Jones, and accompanied by HMS Ark Royal and HMS Hermes, was sunk by German submarine U-29 (Kptlt.
