Reproduced for educational purposes only. Fair Use relied upon. ] Anthony S. Fauci, M.D. Dr. Fauci was appointed director of NIAID in 1984. He oversees an extensive portfolio of basic and applied research to prevent, diagnose, and treat established infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases, tuberculosis and malaria as well as emerging diseases such as Ebola and Zika. NIAID also supports research on transplantation and immune-related illnesses, including autoimmune disorders, asthma and allergies. The NIAID budget for scal year 2021 is an estimated $6.1 billion. Dr. Fauci has advised seven presidents on HIV/AIDS and many other domestic and global health issues. He was one of the principal architects of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a program that has saved millions of lives throughout the developing world. Dr. Fauci also is the longtime chief of the Laboratory of Immunoregulation. He has made many contributions to basic and clinical research on the pathogenesis and treatment of immune-mediated and infectious diseases. He helped pioneer the eld of human immunoregulation by making important basic scientic observations that underpin the current understanding of the regulation of the human immune response. In addition, Dr. Fauci is widely recognized for delineating the precise ways that immunosuppressive agents modulate the human immune response. He developed Anthony S. Fauci, M.D. effective therapies for formerly fatal inammatory and NIAID Director immune-mediated diseases such as polyarteritis nodosa, Credit: NIAID granulomatosis with polyangiitis (formerly Wegener's granulomatosis), and lymphomatoid granulomatosis. A 1985 Stanford University Arthritis Center Survey of the American Rheumatism Association membership ranked Dr. Fauci’s work on the treatment of polyarteritis nodosa and granulomatosis with polyangiitis among the most important advances in patient management in rheumatology over the previous 20 years. Dr. Fauci has made seminal contributions to the understanding of how HIV destroys the body's defenses leading to its susceptibility to deadly infections. Further, he has been instrumental in developing treatments that enable people with HIV to live long and active lives. He continues to devote much of his research to the immunopathogenic mechanisms of HIV infection and the scope of the body's immune responses to HIV. In a 2020 analysis of Google Scholar citations, Dr. Fauci ranked as the 32nd most-cited living researcher. According to the Web of Science, Dr. Fauci ranked 9th out of 2.5 million authors in the eld of immunology by total citation count between 1980 and January 2021. During the same period, he ranked 20th out of 2.4 million authors in the eld of research & experimental medicine, and 132th out of 992,000 authors in the eld of general & internal medicine. Dr. Fauci has delivered major lectures all over the world and is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom (the highest honor given to a civilian by the President of the United States), the National Medal of Science, the George M. Kober Medal of the Association of American Physicians, the Mary Woodard Lasker Award for Public Service, the Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research, the Robert Koch Gold Medal, the Prince Mahidol Award, and the Canada Gairdner Global Health Award.     SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES The Honorable Deborah Birx, MD Deborah L. Birx, MD is Ambassador-at-Large and Coordinator of the United States government activities to combat HIV/AIDS globally. Ambassador Birx is a world-renowned medical expert and leader in the field of HIV/AIDS whose three decade-long career has focused on HIV/AIDS immunology, vaccine research, and global health. As the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator, Ambassador Birx oversees the implementation of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the largest commitment by any nation to combat a single disease in history, as well as all U.S. government engagement with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. In 1985, Ambassador Birx began her career with the Department of Defense (DoD) as a military trained clinician in immunology, focusing on HIV/AIDS vaccine research. From 1985-1989 she served as an Assistant Chief of the Hospital Immunology Service at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Black, Hispanic or Latinx, and Native American people are approximately four times more likely to be hospitalized and nearly three times more likely to die of COVID-19 than their majority counterparts. There are numerous reasons for these disparities, many of which are the same as other findings of disparity in other disease states (i.e. the social determinants of medicine). We know that vaccination is the key to preventing COVID-19 in all people. Vaccinated People – What We Know America’s vaccination effort is among the best in the world. However, where race is known, people of color are getting vaccinated at lower rates than white Americans. The Kaiser Family Foundation analysis reveals a significant disparity where race is known (about 54%) for those who have received at least one dose of vaccine as of April 13, 2021. It shows the racial/ethnic breakdown as White Americans 65%, Hispanic or Latinx 11%, Black 9%, Asian 5%, Indigenous American or Alaskan 2%, Native Hawaiian <1%, and Multiple race 9%. A YouGov poll further supports and illustrates this point as well. Among White adults polled, 26% have gotten the vaccine, compared to 17% of Black adults and 11% of Hispanic adults. WHOLE-OF-GOVERNMENT APPROACH The President signed the CARES Act, providing unprecedented and immediate relief to American families, workers, and businesses. President Trump declared a national emergency, inviting States, territories, and tribes to access over $42 billion in existing funding. President Trump signed initial legislation securing $8.3 billion for coronavirus response. President Trump signed the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, ensuring that American families and businesses impacted by the virus receive the strong support they need. To leverage the resources of the entire government, the President created a White House Coronavirus Task Force to coordinate response. The Vice President named Dr. Deborah Birx to serve as the White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator. At the request of President Trump, FEMA is leading federal operations on behalf of the White House Coronavirus Task Force. FEMA’s National Response Coordination Center has been activated to its highest level in support of coronavirus response. The President held a teleconference with other G20 leaders to coordinate coronavirus response.

    COVID-19 Response – Weekly Wrap-up APRIL 24, 2020 – 2:00 PM CONGRESS COVID news… Congress passed, and the President signed, the Paycheck Protection Program and Healthcare Enhancement Act, which increases the funding levels for programs that were expanded or authorized under the CARES Act, as well as some additional provisions. Additionally, the House passed, along party lines, a resolution establishing an investigative oversight committee that will oversee the implementation of the CARES Act and the associated economic recovery in the post-COVID-19 landscape. Democrats released proposed changes to House rules that would allow Members of Congress to vote by proxy for the first time in U.S. history, but the proposal was quickly sidelined after objections mounted from Republicans, who were not consulted on the proposed changes. Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and other Democrats are calling for swift action legislation to provide aid to state and local governments, a potential second round of stimulus checks to citizens, funding for expanded health care coverage for recently laid-off workers, COVID-related expansions to Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules, money for mail-in voting in the November elections and additional funding to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and other Republicans have called for discussions on any future bill to occur only when lawmakers return to Washington, which currently is slated for the week of May 4.
