By modeling the encounter with climate as one characterized by distraction, David Mitchell’s novel The Bone Clocks proposes that the difficulty in portraying climate change arises not from displaced effects and protracted timescales but a failure of attention. The book both describes and enacts the way more traditionally dramatic stories distract from climate connections right in front of our eyes, revealing, in the end, that the real story was climate all along. Keywords: climate change; clifi; digital humanities; literature and the environment Climate change is notoriously difficult to render in artistic and literary works. In the environmental humanities, there is an entire critical conversation around how and whether climate change can be represented in current cultural forms. The challenges often enumerated include the large time scales on which climate operates (Nixon 2011, p. 3), the displacement of climate effects (p. 2) literary plausibility of including extreme events in fiction (Ghosh 2016, p. 9), and the abstract nature of both the concept of climate (Taylor 2013, p. 1) and the idea of collective human action on the planetary scale (Chakrabarty 2009, p. 214).     David Mitchell Conference 2017: Presentation abstracts and speaker biographies Saturday 3rd June 2017, University of St Andrews Conference organiser: Dr Rose Harris-Birtill On the Politics of Adaptation: Cloud Atlas and Narrative Evolution Keynote speaker: Dr Sarah Dillon, University of Cambridge, England This keynote address aims not to provide an overall argument about Mitchell’s oeuvre, but to address an area of his work as yet little studied in academic Mitchell criticism – film adaptations of his work – and to explore the way in which Mitchell’s work has value not just in itself but in opening up, and contributing to, key contemporary debates about media and politics. In the paper, I will look closely at a number of changes to Cloud Atlas’ structure and thematic emphases as a result of the change of medium from novel to film. I will do so not within the framework of traditional adaptation studies with its evaluative fidelity discourse, but through a new understanding of narrative adaptation as homologous to post-Darwinian evolutionary biology. My aim in doing so is to use Cloud Atlas as a case study in order to make wider arguments about the politics of adaptation from novel to film; to make intersectional feminist arguments about the constraints on narrative created by the cinematic environment; and, to develop the arguments made in Cloud Atlas with regard to the effectiveness of political resistance.     CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by St Andrews Research Repository 1 ‘Looking down time’s telescope at myself’: reincarnation and global futures in David Mitchell’s fictional worlds Dr Rose Harris-Birtill, University of St Andrews [email protected] Abstract This essay explores the trope of reincarnation across the works of British author David Mitchell (b.1969) as an alternative approach to linear temporality, whose spiralling cyclicality warns of the dangers of seeing past actions as separate from future consequences, and whose focus on human interconnection demonstrates the importance of collective, intergenerational action in the face of ecological crises. Drawing on the Buddhist philosophy of samsara, or the cycle of life, death, and rebirth, this paper identifies links between the author’s interest in Buddhism and its secular manifestation in the treatment of time in his fictions. These works draw on reincarnation in their structures and characterisation as part of an ethical approach to the Anthropocene, using the temporal model of ‘reincarnation time’ as a narrative strategy to demonstrate that a greater understanding of generational interdependence is urgently needed in order to challenge the linear ‘end of history’ narrative of global capitalism.     David Mitchell in Morgenbladet by Rob Young ‘It’s like Sleeping Beauty,’ said Margaret Atwood in Oslo a year ago, at the opening of Deichmanske biblioteks Future Library project. ‘The texts are going to slumber for 100 years and then they’ll wake up, come to life again.’ Future Library is a fantasy made real: 100 pieces of writing stored, one year at a time, in a time capsule in a specially designed room at the heart of Oslo’s newest library building, currently under construction at Bjørvika. On 28 May, British author David Mitchell will be arriving in Oslo to deliver the second sealed manuscript. Mitchell, born in 1969, is one of the most unpredictable and inventive novelists of our time. Best known for Cloud Atlas (2004), which was made into a feature film by the Wachowski partnership who made The Matrix, Mitchell’s storylines leap across multiple time zones, geographical locations and literary genres, from costume drama and coming-of-age novels to satire and sci-fi. Cloud Atlas begins on an 18th century exploration ship and ends in a post-apocalyptic distant future. Along the way we meet an English composer and his devious young assistant, a stressed literary agent in London, an investigative journalist uncovering the shady side of a nuclear power company in the US, and a cyborg labourer who revolts against her corporate masters to become a new messiah. Mitchell’s genius is to embed each story inside the other, in a fictional equivalent of the Russian doll, so that you never quite know where the homeground of this narrative lies.
