Universidade Federal do Oeste do Pará – UFOPA, Santarém, 2016. RESUMO Dentre os répteis Squamata, Amphisbaenia é o grupo menos diversificado com 197 espécies, das quais somente 74 ocorrem no Brasil. O conhecimento desse grupo, apesar de ter aumentado nos últimos anos, ainda carece de informações que auxiliem na caracterização e identificação das espécies. Esse estudo foi realizado com intuito de atualizar dados quanto a morfologia externa e distribuição geográfica das espécies de anfisbênios da Amazônia brasileira. Foram analisados 57 caracteres merísticos e morfométricos de 709 espécimes de diversas coleções científicas. Foram reconhecidas 22 espécies de anfisbênios para a Amazônia brasileira, bioma que se mantém com a terceira maior diversidade de anfisbênios do Brasil. Oito espécies de anfisbênios (= 36,3% da diversidade do bioma) apresentam distribuição restrita para a Amazônia: Amphisbaena brasiliana, A. caiari, A. cunhai, A. michelli, A. slevini, A. tragorrhectes, A. vanzolinii e Mesobaena rhachicephala. A distribuição de Amphisbaena kraoh foi reconhecida para a Amazônia, anteriormente conhecida somente para o Cerrado. Três novos registros geográficos foram identificados na amostra analisada: Amphisbaena alba, para o estado do Acre; Amphisbaena caiari, conhecida para a localidade-tipo em Rondônia, foi registrada pela primeira vez para o estado Pará e Mesobaena rhachicephala, conhecida para a localidade-tipo no estado do Pará, foi registrada para o estado do Amazonas. A variação conhecida de dados merísticos de 13 das 22 espécies analisadas foi ampliada, possibilitando assim uma melhor caracterização das mesmas. ABSTRACT The Amphisbaenia is the least-diversified group of Squamata reptiles, with 197 known species. Of these, 74 occur in Brazil. Although there have been improvements in recent years, general knowledge of the group still require data that facilitates identification and characterization of species. The current study was undertaken in order to bring together data on the external morphology and geographical distribution of amphisbaenid species in the Brazilian Amazon. To this end 57 meristic and morphometric characters were analysed from 709 specimens from a variety of scientific collections. Twenty-two species of amphisbaenids were recorded as occuring in the Brazilian Amazon, making it the biome with the third-greatest amphisbaenid diversity in Brazil. Eight species of amphisbaenid (36.3% of the biome´s diversity for this group) have distributions restricted to Amazon: Amphisbaena brasiliana, A. caiari, A. cunhai, A. michelli, A. slevini, A. tragorrhectes, A. vanzolinii and Mesobaena rhachicephala. The distribution of Amphisbaena kraoh was extended into the Amazon basin (the species was previously only known from the cerrado). Three new geographical records were recorded from the analysed sample: Amphisbaena alba for the state of Acre; Amphisbaena caiari, previously known only from the type locality in Rondônia, was recorded for the first time in Pará; and Mesobaena rhachicephala, known only from its type locality in Pará, was recorded for the state of Amazonas. The character variation in 13 of the 22 analysed species was extended, allowing more accurate identification of these species in the future. Additionally, we present a key for species of amphisbaenids from Brazilian Amazon. Key words. Abstract The karyotype of Amphisbaena ridleyi, an endemic species of the archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, in State of Pernambuco, Brazil, is described after conventional staining, Ag-NOR impregnation and fluorescence in situ hybrid- ization (FISH) with a telomeric probe. The diploid number is 46, with nine pairs of macrochromosomes (three metacentrics, four subtelocentrics and two acrocentrics) and 14 pairs of microchromosomes. The Ag-NOR is located in the telomeric region of the long arm of metacentric chromosome 2 and FISH revealed signals only in the telomeric region of all chromosomes. Further cytogenetic data on other amphisbaenians as well as a robust phylogenetic hy- pothesis of this clade is needed in order to understand the evolutionary changes on amphisbaenian karyotypes. Kwapich1 1Department of Biological Sciences, University of Massachusetts Lowell One University Ave., Lowell, Massachusetts, USA [email protected] Abstract Vertebrates occasionally deposit eggs in ant nests, but these associations are largely restricted to neotropical fungus farming ants in the tribe Attini. The subterranean chambers of ponerine ants have not previously been reported as nesting sites for squamates. The current study reports the occurrence of Green Anole (Anolis carolinensis) eggs and hatchlings in a nest of the trap jaw ant, Odontomachus brunneus. Hatching rates suggest that O. brunneus nests may be used communally by multiple females, which share spatial resources with another recently introduced Anolis species in their native range. This nesting strategy is placed in the context of known associations between frogs, snakes, legless worm lizards and ants. Introduction Subterranean ant nests are an attractive resource for vertebrates seeking well-defended cavities for their eggs. To access an ant nest, trespassers must work quickly or rely on adaptations that allow them to overcome the strict odor-recognition systems of ants. For example the myrmecophilous frog, Lithodytes lineatus, bears a chemical disguise that permits it to mate and deposit eggs deep inside the nests of the leafcutter ant, Atta cephalotes, without being bitten or harassed. Tadpoles inside nests enjoy the same physical and behavioral protection as the ants’ own brood, in a carefully controlled microclimate (de Lima Barros et al. 2016, Schlüter et al. 2009, Schlüter and Regös 1981, Schlüter and Regös 2005).

The new species is characterized by presenting a unique combination of characters including: absence of precloacal pores, body annuli 306, caudal annuli 21, autotomic site in the eighth postcloacal annulus, dorsal sulci absent, 10 dorsal segments and 14 ventral segments in a midbody annulus. Key words: Amphisbaenia, Amphisbaena new species, taxonomy, Cerrado Resumo Nós descrevemos uma nova espécie de Amphisbaena com base em um espécime coletado no norte do Cerrado Brasileiro, no município de Loreto, estado do Maranhão, Brasil. A nova espécie é caracterizada por apresentar uma combinação única de caracteres incluindo: ausência de poros pré-cloacais, 306 anéis corporais, 21 anéis caudais, sítio de autotomia no oitavo anel pós-cloacal, sulco dorsal ausente, 10 segmentos dorsais e 14 segmentos ventrais em um anel do meio do corpo. Marechal Caˆmara, 186, 3u andar – Centro, Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, 20020-080, Brazil ABSTRACT: We describe a new species of the formerly monotypic genus Mesobaena from the northern part of the State of Para´, Brazilian Guiana. This species is characterized by having a very pointed snout, two supralabials and two infralabials, of which second ones are elongate and enormous, small eye visible under ocular, ocular very elongate, autotomy annulus poorly marked or absent, absence of dorsal, lateral and ventral sulci, and presence of vertical flat, unsegmented band-like structure with concave lateral edges on tip of tail. Hemipenis without spines or distinct ridges on proximal third, sulcus spermaticus only on proximal third. We make comparisons with other South American amphisbaenids, and provide a key to the amphisbaenids of the Guianan Region. The species is fossorial and inhabits Amazonian tropical rainforest forest near creeks. This is the second species known of the genus, which seems to be restricted to the Guiana Shield and immediate surroundings.
