MATCH DAY PROGRAM 29 July 2017 MATCH DAY PROGRAM 29th July 2017 Photo courtesy of AT Photo UPPER HUTT CITY VS SEATOUN MAIDSTONE PARK - KO 1:00 PM A message from Gibby . On the 8th July we hosted weekend we hosted 2nd placed Palmerston North Marist in what we expected to be a tough battle. Previous matches had seen both teams take a win each, and this game was important to both teams in the race for the league title. We had a dream start when after just 2 mins we went 1-0 up through a Carolyn O’Reilly goal from a corner. PNM seemed absolutely shell shocked and for the rest of the first half, they found themselves in their defensive third more often than not. Unfortunately from our perspective, we weren’t able to capitalize on their lack lustre performance. We talked about keeping the momentum at half time, and at times we created some fantastic chances in the second half, but somewhat out of nowhere, PNM seemed to canter through our midfield, played a ball through the defence, and Cushla found herself one on one, PNM netting with about 15 mins to go. While we felt we deserved the win, we couldn’t quite manage to break down the dogged PNM defence, the final score 1-1. The following weekend saw us play Vic Uni for the second cup tie this season, this time in the Kelly Cup. Due to injury and player unavailability due to being cup tied, we had an extremely light bench. Wendi came out of retirement for the 5th time and started at holding midfield, and even Sharon Lavery momentarily donned the black and orange! This game was vastly different from the first encounter where we nabbed victory by just a penalty, and we were on the scoreboard after only 5 mins. City Review A message from Gibby . Sarah Gregorious was having a field day up front, and was supported on the score sheet by several others, we went into the break 6-0 up. An injury to Lena de Ronde saw Sonya Eder come on in the midfield, while work commitments meant that Kennedy Bryant also needed an early exit. This saw the average age of the team creep up with yours truly filling in at centre back for the last 15 mins. The final score 9-0. Last weekend we hosted Stop Out at home in what was a perfect example of a game of two halves. After a scoreless first half, where Stop Out competed well and kept their shape, we came out after half time with renewed energy. Zoe Barrott came on shortly after half time and was impressive in the midfield, while Sydnie Williams broke her W-League duck as she was put in behind the defence after 15 mins. She finished like a pro, putting the ball under the incoming keeper to take us 1-0 up. Shortly after she made it two, and they were quickly followed up by Kennedy Bryant netting 4 of her own, the final score 6-0. Today we host fourth placed Seatoun in our Round 3 clash. We love playing against Seatoun as the games are always well contested, and both teams play a top brand of football. We look forward to welcoming Gary, the players and spectators to the club after the game. Newly-crowned champions New Zealand have signed off on the OFC U-19 Women’s Championship in fine style with a convincing 9-0 win over Tonga on the final day of the tournament at Ngahue Reserve in Auckland. Having already secured first place and accompanying passage to the 2018 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup on Friday, the main target for Gareth Turnbull’s side was to keep building on their progress and finish with a flourish. They achieved both in unseasonably sunny conditions as Tonga fought gallantly but had little answer to the quality of New Zealand’s play. Despite little riding on the result in terms of the tournament outcome, Turnbull fielded a strong side with the likes of Anna Leat, Grace Jale and Malia Steinmetz – who have all been members of the senior Football Ferns squad – featuring, along with the free-scoring Sam Tawharu, Hannah Blake and Emma Main. Main, the Upper Hutt City forward, made a huge impact in the opening stages, following up Hannah Blake’s ninth-minute opener with a quick-fire hat-trick to put the home nation well in control at 4-0 up. It took Main just seven minutes to complete her treble, the first arriving in the 13th minute before two goals in two minutes from the 19th. With conditions far more favourable than in Friday’s 6-0 win over Samoa, it was 5-0 by the break after Main added her fourth in the 37th minute. Turnbull then made a pair of changes for the second period, Sarah Morton and Elizabeth Anton making way for Emma Clarke and Serena Murrihy respectively. City Review Emma Main stars in U19’s . The attacking combination was still intact though and, with Main, Blake and Tawharu all in the running for the tournament’s golden boot, there was every reason for the trio to continue looking to find the net. But Tonga provided much sterner resistance throughout much of the second half and, despite New Zealand enjoying almost exclusive possession of the ball, clear-cut scoring chances proved harder to come by. Tawharu, who went into the match as New Zealand’s leading scorer with nine strikes, was kept scoreless for the first time in the tournament – in all four other matches she has scored at least twice – and was replaced by Dayna Stevens just past the hour. The well-executed deep block of Tonga continued to frustrate New Zealand and it wasn’t until the 77th minute that they were able to add to their tally through Deven Jackson. Michaela Foster, Grace Jale and captain Rebecca Lake then all added late goals as New Zealand signed off on the tournament in net-busting fashion. “We still wanted to put out a strong team and the line-up was reflective of a group of players we felt deserved the opportunity to start the last game based on their performances,” Turnbull said. “We couldn’t really learn from playing in our new shape from the last match because of the conditions so it was a chance to learn from some of those areas. It was difficult to go through Tonga and then defended really compactly in the second half which makes life difficult, irrespective of how much ball you have,” he added. The focus for Turnbull and co will now turn to preparing for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, which takes place in France from August 7 to 26. City Review .

It’s been nice to have the time to get back into the swing of things and rest players we needed to rest following a busy start to the season. Fortunately, we only spent three days in self quarantine after flying home from our Round 3 clash in Brisbane and I was really impressed with the way the playing group responded to the prospect of 14 days in isolation. Their work ethic was great and they made sure to keep connected as a team. In the days that followed, we have been able to focus on our home clash against Perth Glory. Perth had a hard time in the pre-season with the state’s COVID-19 restrictions but have now had two tough games, in hot conditions, against the in-form Adelaide side. I anticipate Perth will make it hard for us and we need to be prepared, with players such as Caitlin Doeglas and Hana Lowry, who can punish us if we’re not good defensively. We’re determined to keep our winning record at Viking Park and with the surround sound of the fans acting as our 12th player, they’ll be entering tough territory.

A champion will definitely be found in the final round of the Women’s Premier on Sunday with Claudelands Rovers appearing likely to wrestle the crown off Forrest Hill-Milford United. The champions-in-waiting need just a point from the visit of relegated Fencibles United while Forrest Hill must make sure they beat Papatoetoe and pray for a miracle down in Hamilton. In the men’s action, a quirk of the draw has pitted the top two sides against each other in both the Premier League and Division One, creating what amounts to a pair of title deciders. Eastern Suburbs will claim the top-flight gong if they beat Hamilton Wanderers while Forrest Hill can do the same in their northern derby against North Shore United in the first division. Division Two title favourites Papakura City could also wrap things up in Sunday’s trip to AFC Fury but that would depend on Oratia United suffering an upset loss at home to Papatoetoe on Saturday.
