Holy Nerdfest, Batman! I attended my first comic book convention as a featured artist on Saturday. The Steel City Con was held in Cheswick, PA over the weekend, featuring the likes of: Anthony Daniels, the actor who played C3PO in Star Wars; Catherine Bach who played Daisy Duke in the Dukes of Hazzard(!); Jim Martin, the 4-time Emmy Award-winning director from Sesame Street and Mr. Roger's Neighborhood; and Mick Foley, three-time WWF Champion. Check out this PG video from the convention, even though I'm not in it. I was manning the ToonSeum table, along with a few other cartoonists. The ToonSeum is Pittsburgh's newest museum and features cartoon art from all genres. (Full disclosure: I am the president of the board of the ToonSeum.) What does an editorial cartoonist do at a comic book convention other than feel out of place? Aside from signing copies of my cartoons, I was also selling a collection of Bush cartoons that I edited called Bush Leaguers, and distributing free copies of the ToonSeum's latest cartoon project, North, a comic book guide to Pittsburgh's North Side. As you might guess, there were many costumed actors walking around and posing for pictures. I managed to get my picture taken with Steelman, proving that I was there. According to his website, the Steel Man’s costume is inspired from Pittsburgh’s Industrial Past and Present Steelmaking in the United States. He's the self- proclaimed "World's First and Only Ever Post-Industrial Anti-Hero." Deviating from “Art”: Japanese Manga Exhibitions, 1990–2015 Jaqueline Berndt Revised and updated from the essay “Permeability and Othering: The Relevance of ‘Art’ in Contemporary Japanese Manga Discourse” published in Critical Perspectives on Twentieth Century Japanese Thought, edited by Livia Monnet. Japan has seen an increasing number of comics exhibitions since the s, held in commercial spaces, public art galleries, and also specialized manga museums. $is article looks back upon a major shi% in the public sector from leaning on the authority of ﬁne art to deviating from that institutional crutch in favor of manga as media culture, and recently a return to aestheticization in a techni- cal rather than conceptual sense. Taking as its example three representative exhibitions in public museums held in , , and , respectively, the article looks at which notion of manga manifested in each, and how this notion materialized in presentation techniques. All three exhibitions featured graphic narratives, or story-manga, that is, primarily entertaining ﬁction for younger readers that had come to dominate the domain of Japanese comics since the late s with the spread of the manga magazine format and its gendered genres. Yet, magazine manga is not easily displayed. Initially produced as throwaway reading material, its monochrome visuals on acidic paper look much less attrac- tive than eye-catching covers, colored supplements, or merchandising goods. In addition, this kind of manga consists usually of lengthy serialized narra- tives that are inclined to facilitate reader participation rather than authorly self-expression. While crucial characteristics of commercial manga such as the collaborative mode of production, the importance of imitative copying, and the possibility of sharing due to conventions seemed to work against gal- lery exhibitions, in recent years, the alleged shortcoming is being turned into a strength: Domestic manga exhibitions in public institutions are increasingly oriented at the broader community of readers.

Cartooning Across the Pond The Big Reuben Wrap Up! This past Memorial Day weekend the National Cartoonists Society, had its annual Reuben Awards Weekend in not-so-sunny San Diego, CA… well, we did see some sun on the final day of the festivities, but for most of it we experienced what native San Diegans call “May Gray”. That hardly got us down, however. The weekend was a lot of fun. They usually are, but this one seemed to be turned up a notch. Most of the events took place at the beautiful Omni hotel right at the start of the famous Gaslamp District. Friday, May 23rd The ball got rolling Friday with a terrific slate of guest speakers. As NCS president, I have many things I have to do and oversee throughout the weekend, so I rarely get to catch many of the speakers, but I did get to see the majority of the first three of the day who I thought were great, and I heard nothing but raves about the others: Eddie Pittman- Freelancer, animator and creator of the online graphic novel Red’s Planet, Eddie shared his work from various Disney features like “Mulan” and “Lilo and Stich”, to TV’s “Phineas and Ferb”, to his excellent web comic (which was nominated for a divisional award). Chris Houghton- The second recipient of the Jay Kennedy Memorial Scholarship for cartooning, Chris is a great success story. He’s worked on several animated TV shows, comics, MAD and more, including his own comic Reed Gunther. Greg Evans- The Reuben Award-winning creator of the syndicated comic strip Luann, Greg shared stories of some of his early tries at syndication, and about his 29 years doing Luann.

Students who were not interested in EFL have suddenly become avid readers ...students get hooked and read [a] whole series within days. (E. Kane, personal communication, January 17, 2007) For Americans, it may be difficult to comprehend the prominence of manga, or comic books, East Asia.1. Most East Asian nations both produce their own comics and publish translated Japanese manga, so Japanese publications are popular across the region and beyond. Japan is well-known as a highly literate society; what is less well-known is the role that manga plays in Japanese text consumption (Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco). 37% of all publications sold in Japan are manga of one form or another, including monthly magazines, collections, etc. (Japan External Trade Organization [JETRO], 2006). Although Japan has less than half the population of the United States, manga in all formats amounted to sales within Japan of around 4 billion dollars in 2005 (JETRO, 2006). This total is about seven times the United States' 2005 total comic book, manga, and graphic novel sales of 565 million dollars (Publisher's Weekly, 2007a, 2007b). Additionally, manga is closely connected to the Japanese animation industry, as most anime2 television series and films are based on manga; manga also provides inspiration for Japan's thriving video game industry.

USING AND ANALYZING POLITICAL CARTOONS EDUCATION OUTREACH THE COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG FOUNDATION This packet of materials was developed by William Fetsko, Colonial Williamsburg Productions, Colonial Williamsburg. © 2001 by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Williamsburg, Virginia INTRODUCTION TO LESSONS Political cartoons, or satires, as they were referred to in the eighteenth century, have provided a visual means by which individuals could express their opinions. They have been used throughout history to engage viewers in a discussion about an event, issue, or individual. In addition, they have also become a valuable instructional resource. However, in order for cartoons to be used effectively in the classroom, students must understand how to interpret them. So often they are asked to view a cartoon and explain what is being depicted when they really don’t know how to proceed. With that in mind, the material that follows identifies the various elements cartoonists often incorporate into their work. Once these have been taught to the students, they will then be in a better position to interpret a cartoon. In addition, this package also contains a series of representative cartoons from the Colonial period. Descriptors for these are found in the Appendix. Finally, a number of suggestions are included for the various ways cartoons can be used for instructional purposes. The great comic book artist, Will Eisner, defined the comic as a form of “sequential art.”1 Indeed, the narrative use of a series of images is as old as art itself: Cave paintings, Egyptian hieroglyphics, and medieval tapestries are all precursors to the comic book. Yet comics and controversy have been linked from the very start: Founder of the Protestant movement, Martin Luther, was an early target of editorial cartoons (well, engravings anyway); his critics created caricatures of him as a tool of the devil2 (so in a sense, Spider-Man can trace his origins, not just from a radioactive spider, but also from the Reformation). With the advent of the printing press and the proliferation of newspapers and broadsheets, satirical political cartoons soon began to appear. By the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, editorial cartoons were a staple in the newspapers of the day. Benjamin Franklin’s famous “Join, or Die” is acknowledged as the first political cartoon in America, and served to galvanize support for colonial unity. In 1837 the first graphic novel was published by Swiss cartoonist Rudolphe Töpffer and was serialized in the American newspapers as “The Adventures of Mr. Obadiah Oldbuck.”3 Although conspicuously missing our now-familiar word balloons and sound effects, the comic book panel 1 Comics & Sequential Art. For many years he worked as a travelling square dance caller, and with his wife, Cathie, published and edited American Square Dance Magazine. After retiring from the magazine business, Burdick became more involved in drawing editorial cartoons, which appeared in the Times of Ti (Ticonderoga, NY), the Post-Star (Glens Falls, NY) and the Press Republican (Plattsburgh, NY). He founded the Cartoon Museum, first in Hague and later in Ticonderoga, before donating his collection to the Toonseum in Pittsburgh, PA, in 2009. He was one of the founders of the Northern Lake George Rotary, and organizer of the Ticonderoga Stamp Club. He and Cathie were married in the Silver Bay Chapel (Hague, NY) in 1955, and retired to a cottage at Silver Bay in 1991. Glens Falls Mayor Robert A. Regan (Republican), who grew up in Binghamton, served two consecutive four-year terms, from 1998 to 2005. He received a bachelor of arts degree in political science from SUNY Geneseo and a law degree from Albany Law School. Comics and Comic Characters H 1430 BACKGROUND: For works that consist of selections from a comic strip or single panel cartoon, as well as for works about a comic strip or cartoon, it is descriptive cataloging policy to provide an added entry for the title of the strip or cartoon when that title differs from the title of the work being cataloged, and to justify the added entry by means of a note if necessary. Descriptive catalogers are responsible for establishing these headings.
