No, 971 In September, 1962, a molar of Desmostyins was unexpectedly found from the Tertiary deposits cropping out at the cliff of the river of Muka, near Ainonai-Mura, Tokoro-gun (about 43047'30"N, 143044'30"E), East Hol<kaido. This was dis- covered by Mr. Y. KATo, at the occasion of excursion held under the auspices of Kitami Heimatkunde group. The molar was kindly submitted to the present authors for study. It may perhaps belong to the right lower, Desmotylian tooth and possibly the second or eekbe eeee /aytkge2 } Jl s' s, Fig. 1 Desmostylus cf. minor NAGAo newly found from Kitami. (nat. size) 166 S. UozuM T. FuJiE and M, MATsui third, one and may be referable to Desmostykts minor NAGAo with slight doubt. Then the present writers visted there and cooperated to the members of the Kitami Heimatkunde group in field work in order to get correct knowledge about the stratigraphy of the formations, in which the mentioned molar was found. -

Description of the Asahi fauna associated with Mytik{s tichanowitchi MAKiyAMA, from Ikushunbetsu district, Central Hokkaido. by Satoru UozuMI Contribution from the Department of the Geology and Mineralogy, Faculty of Science, Hold{aido University, Sappoi'o, No. 969 In 1937, Dr. Jiro MAKiyAMA described the so-called Asagaian fauna (Oligocene), based on the molluscan fossils collected from Yotukura, jo-ban coal-field, Northeast Japan and Matchgar, North Saghalin. In that occasion he also described Mytikts tichanovitchi as a Miocene element brought from the marl beds which cover the Asagaian fine sandstone formation in Matchgar. The species above mentioned is quite distinct in shell fbrm, from the all other known species belonging to the genus Mytiins. Since then, it has been, however, long remained unknown what kinds of molluscan fossils are associated with this unique form of A(Tytiins. Also no one knew correctly on the stratigraphical relation between the formation with the so-called Asagai fauna or its equivalents and the formation with MytiinS tichanovitchi. In 19S3 and 1954, the present writer engaged in geological investigation in the Ikushunbetsu district in Central Hokkaido, especially near the Asahi coal-mine, and he unexpectedly found the same species of Mytilas as was first described by MAKiyAMA from the lower part of the Neogene deposits there. -

All that are known are now in cultivation in this country and nearly all of them are also in Europe. Many of these plants are perfectly hardy in the northern United States and in Europe, and one or two promise to be of economic value as forest trees in Great Britain and other countries. The importance and value of these trees warrant the publi- cation of all available information concerning them. Much has been written about them since the appearance of Siebold & Zuccarini's Flora Japonica, new species have been discovered and much has been added to our knowledge of these plants. Some problems, however, have remained unsolved in regard to the hab- itat, the range of distribution and the validity of certain species and varieties. To investigate these problems, to collect specimens and take photographs of the trees was one of the principal objects of the Arnold Arboretum Expedition to Japan in 1914. From Professor Sargent I received very definite instructions and these I did my best to fulfill. -

MOLLUSCAN FOSSILS FROM THE NEOGENE DEPOSITS SCATTERED ALONG THE WESTERN WING OF THE HID AKA MOUNTAINS, HOKKAIDO by Seiichi Suzuki ', Akira Sakai** and Saloru Uozumi (with 3 text-figures, 1 table and 4 plates) Abstract A marine molluscan fauna has been newly found in Tertiary deposits scattered along the western wing of the Hidaka Mountains. This fauna is composed of 40 and over molluscan species in company with some species of brachiopods and others, and is characterized by a considerable number of cold and shall ow water elements. The geological age of this fauna is discussed from the stratigraphic viewpoint and the faunal assemblage. The writers come to the tentative conclusion that this fauna may be referable to the middle Miocene "Kawabata" Stage in the provincial Neogene molluscan succession of Hokkaido. In addition to the description of this fauna, the unique plicate species Mytilus (Plicatomytilus) hidakensis, one of the new species, is particularly discussed on its morphological features with relation to its allied species. Introduction Sakai, one of the present writers, has been engaged in the geological survey of the northern part of the Urakawa-Samani area, Hidaka Province during a few summers since 1976, and has mainly investigated Mesozoic deposits that are exposed along the western slope of the Hidaka Mountains, the backbone range of Hokkaido. -

The fact that the geological structure of the Ishikari coal-field in the central part of Hokkaido is very complicated, owing to Mesozoic and Tertiary deposits being intensely plicated, has been well known for a long time to the Japanese geologists. There the imbrication of strata by overthrusts, overfolds and recumbent folds are common and Cretace- ous rocks are at places underlainby or thrust over the Palaeogene Ishikari Series and the Neogene Poronai Beds.1) One of the most conspicuous tectonic features in this district is related to " Klippes." The uniqueexample of " klippes " hitherto well known in detailed structure is that in the northern field of the Oyubari coal-mines. This Oyubari " klippe " of which the real nature was unveiled for the first time by Professor H. Yabe and Dr. H. Imai, consists of an inverted rock-sheet of the Upper Ammonites Beds and Hakobuchi Sandstone lying flat on the beheaded isoclinal strata of the Lower Ishikari and Poronai. Later studies by the present writer and his associates now dis- closed the occurrence of several other " klippes " in the eastern part of the Ishikari coal-fields ; from north to south they are : 1) Mesozoic and Tertiary deposits of the Ishikari coal-field are tabulated below : 102 T. NAGAO. [Vol. 9, 1. Maruyama "klippe " (4 x 1.5 km. in axial lengths) situated to the southwest of the Oyubari " klippe," and consisting of the Upper Ammonite Beds and Hakobuchi Sandstone in normal order. -

They are grouped in four families, Desmoceratidae, Puzosiidae, Kossmaticeratidae and Pachydiscidae. Some of the important members of the 6rst and last groups have been described in Iny recent paper(Appendix勿T. M.(Editor)1954). I treat here the second group. Although it would be desirable to give a de丘nition of the‘‘Family Puzosiidae”, there are certain unsettled questions relating to the extent and status of that group, so that I shall not discuss the matter at length here. However we have a series of forms which constitute a fairly easily recognizable natural group. The main purpose of this paper is to describe them systematically. In connexion with the description of our material some necessary remarks on foreign specimens will be included. In aconcluding chapter I shall give my preliminary view on the‘‘family”. -

In 1813, LA;lWUROUX first established the genus Laminaria and placed in it all of the so-called kelps. In 1826, BORY classified Laminaria and several other similar genera 1 in the family Laminarieae. ) Some of them, however, were revealed later to need exclusion from this family. After that, DECAISNE (1842), ENDLICHER (1836-1847), Ki:iTZING (1849), and J. G. AGARDH (1848, 1867, 1868, 1870, 1872) engaged successively in the taxonomic study of the Laminariaceae. Among the systems established by those workers, AGARDU'S was most complete in those days. In 1893, SETCHELL published a new system, laying stress on the nature of the blade, whether simple or divided, and on the character of the formative tissue at the transition place. In his system, the Laminariaceae consists of three subfamilies and nine teen genera as follows: Subfamily 1. Laminariideae. Blade simple, except in Thalassio phyllum. Among the genera belonging to this subfamily, Chorda, Laminaria, Costaria, Agarum, Thalassiophyllum, and Arthrothamnus are represented in the region under consideration. Subfamily 2. Lessoniideae. Blade simple only while young, later splits at the transition place and finally becomes compound. -

ZHURBENKO1 AND YOSHIHITO OHMURA2 ABSTRACT. – The paper documents 62 species of lichenicolous fungi and one algicolous fungus found in the TNS lichen herbarium. Abrothallus hypotrachynae, Cornutispora pittii, Lichenopeltella cetrariae, L. uncialicola, Phaeospora catolechiae, Polycoccum microcarpum, Sclerococcum porphyreum, Stigmidium joergensenii and S. subcladoniicola are newly reported for Asia; Talpapellis beschiana is newly reported for South America.
