The Foundation for Educational Opportunities, Inc. (FEO) mission is to foster a heightened interest in academics and social issues, promote higher education and instill a desire to succeed in and contribute to the Greater Hartford community. FEO is committed to ensuring that students have the opportunity to succeed in higher education by ensuring graduation from high school prepared to succeed in college and in a career; and to increase post-secondary completion rates through innovative mentoring programs and career coaching. Since 1995, our investments in Greater Hartford area young women pursing a post-secondary degree has resulted in graduates from historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs): Howard University, Spelman College, Hampton University, as well as Ivy League institutions: Yale University, University of Pennsylvania, Brown University, and Connecticut’s very own Wesleyan University, University of Connecticut and Trinity College. Currently, the Foundation for Educational Opportunities leverages two signature programs that work in concert toward accomplishing our mission: the ASCENDSM Youth Enrichment Program and the Hartford Girls Rock! recognition event. ASCENDSM is a free program, which is designed to motivate, engage and assist high school students (9th–12th grade) in reaching their maximum potential. The program focuses on Achievement, Self-Awareness, Communication, Engagement, Networking and Developmental Skills. Students in the program receive academic enrichment and life skills training to support their journey to college or vocational employment. Hartford Girls Rock! is an annual opportunity to celebrate, inspire, empower and honor young ladies of the Greater Hartford community. The young ladies chosen for this honor have been identified by local community-based organizations and represent the goals and standards of their respective organizations. The honorees are Hartford’s best and brightest being recognized for their exemplary leadership, academic achievement and civic engagement. Corporate support is a vital and valued part of what makes the work of FEO possible and sustainable. 2 KEYNOTE SPEAKER Anika Noni Rose Tony Award winner Anika Noni Rose will be starring in History Channel’s adaption of Roots as Kizzy. It gives me a great pleasure to acknowledge the help of my supervisor Prof Dr. Aleida Assmann who has supported me throughout my thesis and whose knowledge, guidance, and encouragement undoubtedly highly benefited my project. I would also like to thank PD Dr. Monika Reif-Hülser for her sustained interest in my work. The feedback that I received from her and the other members of Prof. Assmann’s research colloquium was a very fruitful source of inspiration for my work. The seeds for this study were first planted by Prof. David Krasner’s course on African- American Theater, Drama, and Performance that I attended while I was an exchange student at Yale University, USA, in 2005/2006. I am immensely grateful to him for introducing me to this fascinating field of study and for sharing his expert knowledge when we met again in December 2010.
