We sampled 11 quadrats in three distinct physiographic units within the sarcocaulescent scrub ecoregion: the open scrub, the clustered scrub, and the closed scrub. We found 41 perennial species, which we characterized using 122 morphology-functional characteristics, corresponding to vegetative parts (stem and leaf), reproductive parts (flower and fruit), and functional phases (phenology, pollination, and dispersion). -

Chaparral species of California, USA, exhibit three life history types in response to fire: non-sprouters (NS), facultative sprouters (FS), and obligate sprouters (OS). Adult non-sprouters are killed by fire; thus populations reestablish only through fire- stimulated seed germination and seedling recruitment. Facultative sprouters reestablish by both vegetative sprouting and seed germination. Obligate sprouters reestablish only by vegetative sprouting and do not recruit seedlings post-fire. Previous data suggest that post-fire NS and FS seedlings reestablish as open-canopy gap specialists, whereas OS seedlings primarily reestablish in deep shade during fire-free intervals. Their non-refractory seeds are killed by fire. We hypothesized that these differences in life history, compared within the same taxonomic group, would result in a range of relative resistance to water stress such that NS . FS . OS. To test our hypothesis, we estimated resistance to water stress using resistance to xylem cavitation (the water potential at 50% loss in hydraulic conductivity; W50) for stems and roots in nine species of the family Rhamnaceae: Ceanothus megacarpus, C. -

Christina Mild RIO DELTA WILD published 6/7/2003 FLORA FACTS: Scientific Name: Ziziphus obtusifolia Common Name: Lotebush, Clepe, Gumdrop Tree Family: Rhamnaceae Gumdrop-Laden Foliage Conceals Thorns The dark fruit of Clepe feeds many birds during south Texas’ April. During this fruit-laden season, gumdrop tree is an appropriate name. The scientific name for this plant may be easy to remember. It has a nice sound and bears meaning. Ziziphus obtusifolia is that name. Ziziphus has a nice sound. Obtusifolia is descriptive. Obtuse: dull, not sharp, blunted. Clepe has prominent thorn-tipped branches. After rains, lustrous foliage conceals the thorns completely. The shiny leaves soon bear evidence of insect-foraging. Bite marks appear. Entire leaves disappear. Excellent photographs of Ziziphus obtusifolia are found in “A Field Guide to Common South Texas Shrubs,” R, Taylor, J. Rutledge and J. Herrera, 1997. This book is an excellent help in learning native shrubs. Due to short stature, many of our trees are included also. Taylor et. al. summarize wildlife use of clepe. White-tailed deer occasionally browse the leaves, as do cattle, sheep and goats. The fruit is eaten by chachalaca, gray fox, raccoon, coyote, and Christina Mild. The thorny bush gives cover and protection for quail. Even the picky cactus wren will sometimes nest in a lotebush. One looks hard for distinctions to identify “near-desert” plants. Clepe has distinctive thorns. Each branch tip narrows to a hardened thorntip. Striations adorn the bark in shades of grey and blue-green. Stark angles of the barren thorny branches are strikingly beautiful against the sky and in contrast with surrounding foliage. -

This BpS comprises the eastern half of MZ34 in ECOMAP sections 332F and 315C. This type occurs in the western half of MZ32 and in the northern half of MZ35 (west of Interstate-35). Biophysical Site Description This type occurs on sandy loam, loamey, or clayey upland sites of the southern Great Plains. In TX and OK, elevations range from 915-275m (Wright and Bailey 1982). Precipitation ranges from 20 to 28 inches (Wright and Bailey 1982), although mixedgrass can occur on sites with up to 32in, and occurs mostly from May through September. Vegetation Description Historically, vegetation was generally dominated by midgrass, with some areas occupied by tallgrasses or short grasses, as an effect of grazing, edaphic and topographic conditions.
