Abstract: Hungarian Euchromius are revised and list of localities is provided. Structure of genitalia and mor- phological characteristics of wings are illustrated by figures. The habitats and Hungarian distribution of the species have been analysed, the latter shown on UTM-grid maps. The study is completed with references on the Hungarian distribution of the species. Introduction The world fauna of genus Euchromius is probably the best known among Crambinae since revisions after BLESZYNSZK I (1965), CAPPS (1966) and SC HOUTEN (1988, 1992). Two species of Euchromius are known to occur in Hungary (FAZEKAS 1996, PASTORÁL I S 2010) and 12 species in Europe (SLAMKA 2008). Knowledge of the biology and geo- graphical range is limited in Hungary. GOZMÁNY (1963) redescribed the diagnostic characters of the Hungarian species, and gave an account of what was known of their biology and distribution. According to SZENT -IVÁNY and UHR I K -MÉSZÁROS (1942), Euchromius superbellus (Zeller, 1849) is a problematical species in Hungary: „In der Sammlung des Naturhistorischen Museums befinden sich 2 Exemplar mit der Fundortsetikette: “Hung. coll. REBEL“ und 1 Exemplar mit dem Fundortszettel: “Hung. ANKER, coll. Rebel.“ GOZMÁNY (1963) showed later that no specimen of Euchromius superbellus is known from the actual territory of Hungary. -

Rapid Pest Risk Analysis (PRA) for: Euzophera bigella June 2018 Summary and conclusions of the rapid PRA Euzophera bigella is a moth found in much of Europe and parts of Asia, whose larvae (caterpillars) feed inside a variety of fruit and under the bark of a number of species of tree. Though there have been several adults caught in light traps in the UK, such records are very scarce and there is no evidence this species is established in any part of this country. Following the rapid screening of E. bigella via the UK Plant Health Risk Register, this PRA was requested to further assess the potential risk to the UK. This rapid PRA shows: Risk of entry The pathway of fruit (and nuts) is considered moderately likely, with medium confidence. Larvae have previously been found in imported fruit in the UK. If larvae were able to complete development inside the fruit, emerging adults would be capable of flying off and locating new hosts. The pathway of larvae under the bark of older trees for planting is considered moderately likely, with medium confidence. Larvae under the bark of younger, smaller trees is assessed as unlikely with medium confidence, as infestations produce swellings and cracks in the bark which are more likely to be seen in smaller trees. The pathway of wood with bark is considered unlikely with low confidence. Confidence is low because a different species of Euzophera has recently travelled from the USA to Italy on this pathway. 1 The pathway of natural spread is considered very unlikely with low confidence. -

You have entered the Ultra, our 60km off road running challenge. The point to point route is from Haslemere to Dorking along the Greensand Way with a 12 hour cut off period. The postcode to find the start is GU27 2AS, and there will be yellow directional signage to help you find us. Parking is free on Sundays and there are a number of car parks to choose from. In the main centre of Haslemere, you can park at the High Street pay and display car park or at the Chestnut Avenue pay and display car park (better for longer periods). If you want to park close to the train station, or park for a long period of time during the day, Tanners Lane and Weydown Road pay and display car parks are close to the station. Coal Post Walk on Banstead Heath
Coal post walk on Banstead Heath Map: Explorer 146 Dorking, Box Hill & Reigate. Total length: about 13.5 km (8½ miles). Start: Tattenham Corner station (shorter option: start from Tadworth station); finish: Kingswood station. There is a particular concentration of posts in the area of Banstead and Walton heaths, there being nowhere else where so many posts can be seen in such a short distance. This walk passes 26 – more than an eighth of the surviving total – though all are Type 2 posts (no railway or canal marks are passed). The countryside is very attractive too: this walk is entirely on the North Downs, starting on the chalk of Epsom and Walton Downs, then crossing Banstead and Walton Heaths where the chalk is overlain by clay with flints, and reaching the scarp slope of the downs at Colley Hill. The walk follows the boundary of the former parish of Banstead along a salient projecting south from the main area of the parish, between the former parishes of Walton on the Hill to the west and Kingswood (once a detached part of the parish of Ewell) to the east. Parishes in the former Banstead Urban District were abolished by the Local Government Act 1972, so although the walk follows ancient boundaries these are not marked on current Ordnance Survey maps. The walk starts from Tattenham Corner station, which is the final station on a branch line from Purley. Trains run from London Bridge or Victoria depending on the time of the day. Although the branch is largely outside Greater London it is included in Transport for London Zone 6 and so travelcards valid for Zone 6, Freedom Passes, etc are valid to all the stations mentioned in this description. -

Historically, the butterfly inhabited dense upland forests called tropical hardwood hammocks from the greater Miami area south through the Florida Keys. Habitat loss and fragmentation over the past century have led to severe population declines and range reductions. Today, Schaus’ Swallowtail is restricted to only a few remaining sites in the northern Florida Keys, making it one of the rarest butterflies in the U.S. and our only federally listed swallowtail. Although small numbers occur on Key Largo, the main population resides on islands in Biscayne National Park. Because recent surveys indicate extremely small numbers of butterflies throughout its range, the risk of extinction is thought to be very high. Collaborative conservation and recovery efforts are underway for the Schaus’ Swallowtail. River Tillingbourne – Albury Estates Advisory Visit April 2018 Key Findings • The Tillingbourne through the Albury Estate land holdings does support viable wild trout habitat but is severely compromised by impounding structures on both beats. • The move to an unstocked, wild fishery will enable the wild component of the stock to develop. • Some excellent work designed to improve habitat quality has already been undertaken but the scope for further enhancement is huge. • The bottom lake on the Vale End Fishery is unsustainable, fragments river habitats, blocks natural fish migration and locally impacts water quality. Removing the dam and reinstating a natural stream would be a flagship project but would undoubtedly attract external funding and support from government agencies as well as catchment partners. • The WTT can help to prepare a costed project proposal and partner the Estate in helping to deliver a sustainable wild trout fishery at Vale End. 1 1.0 Introduction This report is the output of a site visit to the River Tillingbourne on the Albury Estate in Surrey. The Estate management currently runs a network of still-water game fisheries, primarily stocked with farm-reared rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and occasional brown trout (Salmo trutta). In addition, the Estate offers chalkstream fly fishing opportunities on two separate beats of river which run parallel with the Estate’s stocked trout lakes. The Estate also runs a section of syndicated river fishing immediately upstream of the Weston Fishery which is not included in this report. Historically, the river sections available to paying day rods have been stocked with farm-reared brown trout and the Estate have recently ceased stocking on these two day ticket beats and are looking to develop the wild component of the stock via a programme of improved habitat management. -
Investigating the Effect of Browsing on Brown Hairstreak
107528 Piotr Szota (BSc Ecology & Conservation) Candidate number: 107528 Supervisor: Dr. Alan Stewart Investigating the effect of browsing and differing hedgerow parameters on Brown hairstreak Thecla betulae egg numbers across East and West Sussex 22nd January 2015 1 107528 Abstract British Lepidoptera, especially those with more specialized habitat requirements show evidence of decline greater than other taxonomic groups, with agricultural intensification and mechanisation being the main identified cause behind the Brown hairstreak’s decline. An adult survey was conducted in July/August 2014, yielding 5 observations of imagines at a well-known population hotspot, Knepp Castle Estate. Due to their elusiveness, focus was shifted to more representative egg searches carried out in winter 200m of >50% blackthorn hedgerow on several sites in East and West Sussex was systematically searched in 10m sections, yielding 31 ova. Different hedge parameters which were hypothesized to influence egg distribution were recorded, with studies by Merckx & Berwaerts (2010) and Fartmann & Timmermann (2006) as rough guides Statistical analyses found no links between varying hedge parameters and the number of eggs recorded, although due to the small size of the dataset which may not be representative of the whole region this cannot be deemed conclusive. Introduction 2 107528 It is a sad paradox that insects, the most diverse and species rich group of living organisms (Gaston, 1993) which comprises the vast bulk of terrestrial biodiversity and provides humans with vital ecosystem services, is largely overlooked if not outright scorned by the general population (Pyle et al, 1981). Vast amounts of professional entomology research focus on pest species of agricultural crops (ibid). -

Abstract Additions, deletions and corrections are made to the Irish checklist of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). Elachista biatomella (Stainton, 1848) is added to the Irish list. The total number of confirmed Irish species of Lepidoptera now stands at 1480. Key words: Lepidoptera, additions, deletions, corrections, Irish list, Elachista biatomella Introduction Bond, Nash and O’Connor (2006) provided a checklist of the Irish Lepidoptera. Since its publication, many new discoveries have been made and are reported here. In addition, several deletions have been made. A concise and updated checklist is provided. The following abbreviations are used in the text: BM(NH) – The Natural History Museum, London; NMINH – National Museum of Ireland, Natural History, Dublin. The total number of confirmed Irish species now stands at 1480, an addition of 68 since Bond et al. (2006). Taxonomic arrangement As a result of recent systematic research, it has been necessary to replace the arrangement familiar to British and Irish Lepidopterists by the Fauna Europaea [FE] system used by Karsholt 60 Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society No. 36 (2012) and Razowski, which is widely used in continental Europe. -

BOAs are those areas where targeted maintenance, restoration and creation of Natural Environment & Rural Communities (NERC) Act ‘Habitats of Principal Importance’, ie. Priority habitats will have the greatest benefit towards achieving this aim. Recognition of BOAs directly meets National Planning Policy Framework policy for the planning system to contribute to international commitments for halting the overall decline in biodiversity, by establishing coherent ecological networks that are more resilient to current and future pressures (para. 109). Designation of BOAs in local plans will also fulfil NPPF requirements to plan for biodiversity at a landscape-scale across local authority boundaries; and identify & map components of the local ecological networks (para. 117). Explanatory BOAs identify the most important areas for wildlife conservation remaining in Surrey and each include a variety of habitats, providing for an ‘ecosystem approach’ to nature conservation across and beyond the county.
