BIOGRAPHY Musician turned mixer/producer Mike Cave got his start playing guitar, keyboards & drums in a variety of bands on the Liverpool circuit from the age of 13, and by 15 he was engineering sessions for his own bands and others in the area. Mike went on to study Music Theory at the London College of Music, but his real education was finding his band The Sunlites in a major record deal with Mercury, allowing him to spend two years in the studio with the big guns – Jeremy Wheatley, Mike Neilsen, Kevin Bacon and Jonathan Quarmby. A six year in-house engineer stint at Liverpool!s legendary Parr Street Studios followed, working alongside heavyweights such as Ken Nelson (Coldplay, Badly Drawn Boy, Gomez), Jeremy Wheatley (Space, Sugababes, Mel C), and Brendan Lynch (Paul Weller, Ocean Colour Scene, Cast). Mike then went freelance and opened his own world class studios The Loft in a large converted Manhattan-style loft in the centre of Liverpool. He!s built a strong reputation as a mixer/producer, with artists as diverse as Professor Green, The Coral, Elvis Costello, Noisettes, Tinchy Stryder, James Vincent McMorrow, John Martyn, Yuksek, Bob Dylan, The Charlatans, The Zutons, and Echo & The Bunnymen making use of his production, mixing & mastering expertise and earning him a string of top ten albums & singles and numerous multi-platinum, gold & silver sales awards (see below). As a freelance mixer/producer Mike had worked in a wide variety of commercial studios, and understands what makes a successful facility. Mike!s vision became a reality with the opening of The Loft Studios, based in central Liverpool and housed in a large, converted Manhattan-style loft. The studios offer masses of natural daylight and plenty of open space. “There?s a relaxed atmosphere here that helps everyone feel at home, and infinitely more creative,” he says. The Loft features an array of high end equipment, ranging from some of the best vintage analogue gear to the most powerful digital mixing system available – the Avid ICON D-Control large format console, alongside Pro Tools HDX. This combination of analogue and digital equipment provides the best of both worlds, and the live rooms offer stunning natural acoustics.     THE UNIVERSITY OF WINCHESTER Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences The Role of Engagement with Characters in Framing and Persuasion through News Narratives Barbara Maleckar Doctor of Philosophy Jaunary 2013 This Thesis has been completed as a requirement for a postgraduate research degree of the University of Winchester 2 THE UNIVERSITY OF WINCHESTER ABSTRACT FOR THESIS The Role of Engagement with Characters in Framing and Persuasion through News Narratives Barbara Maleckar Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Doctor of Philosophy January 2013 While the field of narrative persuasion has widely stressed the persuasive power of (fictional) stories, the framing research tradition has overlooked the role of narrative properties in framing. Neither field has examined news as narrative and the influence that it might have on audiences through mechanisms of narrative persuasion. Because character is an integral component of the very definition of narrative, it is investigated in this project both as textual cue and reception process that can account for the persuasive power of news frames on audiences. The first stage of the research involved a qualitative study of character at the textual level. Narrative devices used to portray individuals involved in a newsworthy event and to present their point of view were analysed in two framing analyses. Excerpts from crime news coverage clearly linked narrative devices pertaining to the treatment of character with the available frames about the crime. These devices were used in the news stories to invite readers’ engagement with certain characters instead of others and to transmit the frame accordingly. The effect of character-based frames on reader engagement was then tested in two experimental studies that manipulated the perspective from which the crime events were presented by selecting appropriate excerpts from authentic news media materials.

WEA’S ROOTS DATE BACK TO THE FOUNDING OF WARNER BROS. RECORDS IN 1958 AS A DIVISION OF WARNER BROS. PICTURES. IN 1963, WARNER BROS. RECORDS PURCHASED FRANK SINATRA’S REPRISE RECORDS. AFTER WARNER BROS. WAS SOLD TO SEVEN ARTS PRODUCTIONS IN 1967 (FORMING WARNER BROS.-SEVEN ARTS), IT PURCHASED ATLANTIC RECORDS AS WELL AS ITS SUBSIDIARY ATCO RECORDS. IN 1969, THE WARNER BROS.-SEVEN ARTS COMPANY WAS SOLD TO THE KINNEY NATIONAL COMPANY. KINNEY MUSIC INTERNATIONAL (LATER CHANGING ITS NAME TO WARNER COMMUNICATIONS) COMBINED THE OPERATIONS OF ALL OF ITS RECORD LABELS, AND KINNEY CEO STEVE ROSS LED THE GROUP THROUGH ITS MOST SUCCESSFUL PERIOD, UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 1994. IN 1969, ELEKTRA RECORDS BOSS JAC HOLZMAN APPROACHED ATLANTIC'S JERRY WEXLER TO SET UP A JOINT DISTRIBUTION NETWORK FOR WARNER, ELEKTRA, AND ATLANTIC. ATLANTIC RECORDS ALSO AGREED TO ASSIST WARNER BROS. IN ESTABLISHING OVERSEAS DIVISIONS, BUT RIVALRY WAS STILL A FACTOR —WHEN WARNER EXECUTIVE PHIL ROSE ARRIVED IN AUSTRALIA TO BEGIN SETTING UP AN AUSTRALIAN SUBSIDIARY, HE DISCOVERED THAT ONLY ONE WEEK EARLIER ATLANTIC HAD SIGNED A NEW FOUR-YEAR DISTRIBUTION DEAL WITH FESTIVAL RECORDS.
