Goldencents Colt Upsets La. Derby SUNDAY, MARCH 24, 2019 OH MY! GOLDENCENTS MUCHO GUSTO LOOMS LARGE IN SUNLAND DERBY By Christie DeBernardis COLT UPSETS LA. DERBY >TDN Rising Star= Mucho Gusto (Mucho Macho Man) will be the horse to beat Sunday when he lines up for the GIII Sunland Park Derby. Following his impressive debut win at Los Alamitos Sept. 20 with a victory in the GIII Bob Hope S. Nov. 17, the $625,000 EASMAY buy suffered his lone loss when second to stablemate and fellow >Rising Star= Improbable (City Zip) in the GI Los Alamitos Futurity Dec. 8. The chestnut rebounded with a decisive score in the 1 1/16-mile GIII Robert B. Lewis over a sloppy Santa Anita surface Feb. 2 and enters this nine-panel test off a six-furlong breeze in 1:13 3/5 (2/11) at Santa Anita Mar. 18. Also making the trip in from California is Anothertwistafate (Scat Daddy), whose three wins came over the Golden Gate synthetic. Cont. p6 By My Standards | Sarah Andrew IN TDN EUROPE TODAY By My Standards (Goldencents), an impressive last out maiden TDN Q&A: DAVID SIMCOCK winner at Fair Grounds Feb. 16, pulled off a 22-1 upset in The TDN’s Alayna Cullen chats to trainer David Simcock about his former popular stable stalwart Sheikhzayedroad (GB) Saturday=s GII Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby. AHow do you put this in perspective?@ winning owner Chester Thomas of Allied Racing Stable said. AIt hasn=t sunk in yet. Life is good right now. It doesn=t get any better than this. You know what, if you look at the [GII] Risen Star, this horse finished the last five sixteenths faster than the winner of the Risen Star [when breaking his maiden that day]. That gave us a lot of confidence. The Beyer numbers didn=t come back to support that, but we still felt good about our horse. He progressed from it.@ By My Standards sat a dream trip while saving ground just behind the leaders in fourth through early fractions of :23.63 and :47.68. Loaded for bear at the top of the stretch as Spinoff revved up to the front with a four-wide bid, By My Standards punched through an inviting opening toward the inside as they straightened and outkicked that one home to pull off the upset. AI=ve been excited about him all along,@ winning trainer Bret Calhoun said. I didn=t know how we were going to stack up to those kind of horses. But I knew my horse was doing very, very good and deserved a chance.@ By My Standards hit the board in each of his first three trips to the post, including a third-place finish after leading in the stretch in New Orleans Jan. 19. The winner that day, Frank=sgunisloaded (Orb), returns at Laurel in an optional claimer Sunday. By My Standards was working up a storm in the a.m., headed by a five- furlong bullet in :59 (1/48) Mar. 9, following his aforementioned 4 1/4-length victory last time. War of Will (War Front), favored at 4-5 off the heels of runaway wins in the GIII Lecomte S. and GII Risen Star S., took some awkward steps shortly after the start. He raced in sixth for most of the way before crossing the line a disappointing ninth. AWe think what happened was about four jumps out of the gate, he actually broke in front and if you watch, he buckles on his right hind,@ trainer Mark Casse said. AAnd we believe, maybe it was stumble of some sort. But when he did, we think he strained maybe a muscle or whatever. But he was significantly off after the race. I=ve just been on the phone with Dr. Robert McMartin, he=s my main guy, and he thinks he maybe caught his stifle or something. GRADE II LOUISIANA DERBY JUMPS TO $750,000 AND WILL BE RUN AT 1 1/8 MILES ON MARCH 27 BIG EVENT SCHEDULE CHANGES & TWO NEW RACES FOR FILLIES & MARES HIGHLIGHT FAIR GROUNDS’ RECORD $7.24 MILLION, 66-RACE STAKES MENU NEW ORLEANS, LA (Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009) – Fair Grounds Race Course and Slots has raised the purse of the Grade II Louisiana Derby to $750,000, increased the distance to 1 1/8 miles and moved the 3-year-old fixture to Saturday, March 27 – five weeks prior to the Kentucky Derby. The significant changes to its signature race and accompanying races, as well as the addition of two new dirt races for fillies and mares, highlight a record $7.24 million, 66-race stakes schedule for the 2009-2010 Fair Grounds meet. The 85-day Fair Grounds meet will have its earliest start date ever when the historic New Orleans racetrack opens on Friday, Nov. 6, a week earlier than last year and well ahead of the old Thanksgiving Day opener of years past. Closing day for the action-packed 21-week season will be Sunday, March 28. In recent years, the Louisiana Derby, which produced Kentucky Derby winners Black Gold (1924) and Grindstone (1996), had been a $600,000 race over 1 1/16 miles and was carded seven weeks prior to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands. The momentous switch of the 97th Louisiana Derby to closing weekend, along with moving the Grade II, $400,000 Fair Grounds Oaks to headline a stakes quartet for fillies and mares on Friday, March 26, has altered both series of races.

LONDON: GEORGE BELL & SONS, YORK ST., COVENT GARDEN. AND NEW YORK. 1892. ^ LONDON : REPRINTED FROM STEREO-PLATES BY WILLIAM CLOWES AND SONS, LIMITED. STAMFORD STREET AND CHARING CROSS. TRANSLATOE'S PEEFACE. IN this translation of the Galatea of Cervantes, the object has been to convey the story in language as closely as pos- sible to the original. The translator fears he may not alway have succeeded in completely rendering the narratives ot the various incidents which characterise this simple pastoral epic, and that also he may have to apologise for somewhat ot roughness in his transfusion of the poetry, which has found its equivalent, where the lines have been long, in blank verse. The other portions of the poetry he has rendered literally, but wherever the two dialects assimilated he has thought it sufficient to furnish only a kind of metrical rhythm. This elegant and simple production, the earliest from the pen of the eminent poet and novelist of Spain, pour- traying young, fresh, and vivid scintillations of genius, has never been translated into any language. We have only its shadow in the French production of Florian, which is based on the Spanish story, and though written in an en- gaging and graceful style, is not that mature and elegant child of the brain of Cervantes which is now for the first time presented to the English reader.

Goldencents Set to Run Next in Cigar Mile By Steve Haskin, @SteveHaskin BloodHorse.com Photo: Dave Harmon Goldencents won the 2013 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. Goldencents, winner of the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (gr. I), will make his next start in the $500,000 Cigar Mile (gr. I) at Aqueduct Racetrack Nov. 30, according to majority owner Glenn Sorgenstein. "After the Breeders' Cup we looked at the race and thought (the Cigar mile) might come up little quick, but Doug (trainer O'Neill) and I decided to watch the horse and let him tell us," Sorgenstein said Nov. 7. "He bounced out of the race as if he hadn't run. Each day, his ears were pricked, he was alert and ready to go, and he was looking for his food. He showed no signs of stiffness and has been perfectly sound. "Originally, I had told Doug that the Malibu Stakes (gr. I) makes sense, because we wouldn't have to ship, it was his home track (Santa Anita Park), and we'd be assured of good weather. But then I started thinking, 'What the heck; from the polls we've seen, he's second to Will Take Charge as leading 3-year-old, and sending him to New York would give the East Coast writers an opportunity to see him race. And Aqueduct is a good fast track where speed holds.' "It took while, but we've finally figured out the jockey situation and we feel confident with Rafael (Bejarano). We feel he'll (Goldencents) do great in New York and we owed it to him to get him out there.
