From Deacon Wayne’s Desk ThirTy-Second Sunday in ordinary Time – november 08, 2020 Stay awake and be ready! For you do not know on what day your Lord will come. MT 24:42A, 44

As we approach the end of our liturgical year, we continue to hear apocalyptic (end times) bible readings including those we hear this Sunday. These always stir up mysterious perplexing ideas and thoughts in us, especially as it pertains to our own mortality. Oh, the thoughts that come. When will the Lord come for me? When will I take my last breath? We can become so obsessed and preoccupied when thinking about our last days/minutes. No one is sure what awaits us on the other side of our last breath. So, for some, it can be scary because of the uncertainty. Woody Allen once quipped, “I’m not afraid of death; I just don’t want to be there when it happens.” It all boils down to how well you have spent your time and treasure here on earth. If we have invested our time and treasures in showing God love, then you can find a peace that does not come from our world. Where have you spent your time, energy, money, and love? Have you spent all, on making your home, your life, your desires, your happiness, on things that have made you happy in this world? Have we made this world your home? Maybe we are a little confused as to where we are supposed to be? Sometimes, we can forget this place we call earth, is not our home. This is only a bus stop we must live through and live well while we are here. Even though we tend to make this place here on earth our home, we must remember who we are and where we came from. Love always seeks out its origin. So, it should be no surprise that we are destined to return home to the One who Loves us more than we can know. Home, which is where we want to be. Billy Graham once said, “The moment we take our last breath on earth, we take our first in heaven.” Heaven is a wonderful place and the benefits for the believer are out of this world! I [will] not go to heaven because I am a preacher. I am going to heaven entirely on the merit of the work of Christ.” “My home is in heaven. I’m just passing through this world.” Simply put, the recipe is to live well and die well. Do not sweat the small things, the temporal things, and the passing things. When we focus on where God wants us to be and what He wants us to do, when we focus on caring for the outcast and the poor and those who are broken, the homeless, we are in our home away from home. When we live well, we have no worries. When we live the way God wants us to, we will be thinking outside our own desires and it is there we find peace, joy and God’s love. Our lives will be full, our oil flasks (to use the biblical reference) will be full when the Lord comes and we will enter the wedding feast, heaven, full of joy. You do not want to MISS THIS!

Let us pray this week with our focus being those suffering from any illness, especially our parish family members. There is a great need for healing in our family so we pray for all those from our families and our communities. The second focus is to be on our nation as we move forward after our national election. We pray for peace among all U.S. citizens, and that God will continue to guide us to be open to His truth and give us all the courage we need to follow His WILL. Mary, patroness of America, we dedicate our nation to you and relinquish all control over to your Son our Lord Jesus the Christ. Pray for us O Holy Mother of God. Description of the roles of Sacramental Minister (Fr. Bill) and Administrator (Dcn. Wayne)

In conversations within our SMSJ Leadership Team the suggestion was made to communicate and describe the roles of Sacramental Minister (Fr. Bill) and Administrator (Dcn. Wayne) and how they work in our parish.

Understanding that for many of us this is a new arrangement of our local parish of St Mary and St Joseph is quite new. No longer having a full-time priest at every parish across most dioceses, including ours, is nearly impossible due to the number of priest vs parishes. In having the roles of a “sacramental priest” and an “administrator” is a vastly different way of managing a parish from what we may have remembered from our past with each parish having a priest/administrator. So, we take this chance to describe our roles once again and the role each of us plays and to let our parishioners know of when we are available for them. Please know that we are available for further conversation on this if you would like to speak in person.

Sacramental Minister (Fr Bill)

The purpose of this position is to ensure that the liturgical, especially the sacramental needs of a parish faith community are met. The Sacramental Minister receives his faculties from the bishop as indicated by the letter of appointment. The Sacramental Minister is the representative of the Bishop and is responsible to see that the sacramental and other liturgical rites are celebrated in conformity with the norms of the liturgical books and Diocesan liturgical regulations. The Sacramental Minister has the primary responsibility regarding the celebration of liturgy. It is recognized that a Sacramental Minister will implement his responsibilities to the assigned parish community for this purpose.

Currently Fr. Bill is at our parish at the following times. Wednesday at our Gaines location at 8:30 for daily Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Thursday at our Durand location at 8:30 for daily Mass. Saturday at our Durand location at 5:00pm for Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Sunday at our Gaines location at 8:30am Mass. Sunday at our Durand location at 11:30 for Mass.

Fr Bill has been and will continue to make himself available for all our sacramental needs, including anointing of the sick which he has done both at our parish and in people’s homes. Fr Bill has been great about meeting with people to counsel them as they have requested. If you have any reason to talk with Fr. Bill about sacramental needs and/or any reason you simply want to talk, please call our offices and we will be glad to make the connection with Fr. Bill and set up a time to meet with you.

Parish Administrator (Dcn. Wayne)

Parish Administrator maintains a warm, welcoming, orderly atmosphere for parishioners and others who call or visit the church. The parish administrator is the primary person responsible for the supervision and management of all financial activities, administrative functions, human resources, church office personnel, parish facilities, and all related processes and systems for the parish. To support to the parish ministries by ensuring that the practical matters are correctly handled, the Administrator will help create the environment for excellent functioning of all dimensions of parish ministry. The parish administrator directs these efforts within a framework of shared ministry and Catholic values consistent with the mission and purpose of St. Mary St Joseph Catholic Church and the Diocese of Lansing. The parish administrator reports to the bishop and is overseen by the canonical pastor.

In addition to the things mentioned above, Dcn. Wayne also is available to you for:

Sacramental preparation, Marriage Annulments, meeting with people to counsel them as they have requested.

Currently Dcn. Wayne spends time at each of our locations at the following times. Tuesday at our Durand location during the day from 9am to 1pm. Wednesday at our Gaines location during the day from 9am to 1pm Thursday at our Durand location during the day from 9am to 1pm Dcn. Wayne does his best to make himself available before and after all our Mass times for you.
