    RITUAL CLEANING-UP OF THE CITY: FROM THE LUPERCALIA TO THE ARGEI* This paper is not an analysis of the fine aspects of ritual, myth and ety- mology. I do not intend to guess the exact meaning of Luperci and Argei, or why the former sacrificed a dog and the latter were bound hand and foot. What I want to examine is the role of the festivals of the Lupercalia and the Argei in the functioning of the Roman community. The best-informed among ancient writers were convinced that these were purification cere- monies. I assume that the ancients knew what they were talking about and propose, first, to establish the nature of the ritual cleanliness of the city, and second, see by what techniques the two festivals achieved that goal. What, in the perception of the Romans themselves, normally made their city unclean? What were the ordinary, repetitive sources of pollution in pre-Imperial Rome, before the concept of the cura Urbis was refined? The answer to this is provided by taboos and restrictions on certain sub- stances, and also certain activities, in the City. In particular, it considers the role played by the cost of public construction in the socioeconomic history of the period, here defined as 390 to 168 B.C. During the Middle Republic period, Rome expanded its dominion first over Italy and then over the Mediterranean. As it developed into the political and economic capital of its world, the city itself went through transformative change, recognizable in a great deal of new public infrastructure.

While ultio on Brutus and Cassius was a well-grounded theme in Roman society at large and was the principal slogan of Augustus and the Caesarians before and after the Battle of Philippi, the vow remained unfulfilled until 20 BC2 . In 20 BC, Augustus renewed his vow to Mars Ultor when Roman standards lost to the Parthians in 53, 40, and 36 BC were recovered by diplomatic negotiations . The temple of Mars Ultor then took on a new role; it hon- oured Rome’s ultio exacted from the Parthians . Parthia had been depicted as a prime foe ever since Crassus’ defeat at Carrhae in 53 BC . Before his death in 44 BC, Caesar planned a Parthian campaign3 . In 40 BC L . Decidius Saxa was defeated when Parthian forces invaded Roman Syria . In 36 BC Antony’s Parthian campaign was in the end unsuccessful4 . Indeed, the Forum Temple of Mars Ultor was not dedicated until 2 BC when Augustus received the title of Pater Patriae and when Gaius departed to the East to turn the diplomatic settlement of 20 BC into a military victory . Nevertheless, Augustus made his Parthian success of 20 BC the centre of a grand “propagandistic” programme, the principal theme of his new forum, and the reason for renewing his vow to build a temple to Mars Ultor .

    Dispatches from the Home Front: The Anaglypha Panels in Rome Elizabeth Wolfram Thill, IUPUI1 Introduction Hadrian’s Wall was a novel type of monument, in both theme and scale. A massive message in stone, it proclaimed not battlefield victory, but battlefield obviation; its scale was not limited to a single city, but spanned an entire geographical feature. Although awe inspiring in Britain, the Wall and the novel policy it represented-- territorial consolidation pursued across the empire--were difficult to incorporate into established means of social communication in Rome itself. Winning wars and securing peace was a well understood subject, one that had been employed for centuries to praise leadership and frame it relative to various social classes of Rome. The same could not be said for avoiding wars to secure peace.2 The Roman Senate thus faced a challenge. To continue the relationship by which the Senate offered public praise to the emperor in exchange for that emperor’s favorable behavior, the Senate would need to find a way to harmonize the unprecedented actions of Hadrian with the traditional means of elite expression. The monumental reliefs3 known as the Anaglypha Panels can be seen as a solution to this problem. At first glance they seem a distinct phenomenon from famous examples of military commemoration, such as the Columns of Trajan and Marcus Aurelius, which feature ascending helical friezes with depictions of violent battles in enemy territory. The Anaglypha Panels, in contrast, show the emperor attending to peaceful activities in Rome. Closer inspection, however, reveals that these contrasts run only skin deep.

    CURSING THE FIG TREE IN MARK by Andrew Simmonds10/8/15 ABSTRACT: Mark’s narrative of the cursing of the fig tree has baffled commentators. It has been called the “least attractive of all narratives about Jesus,” a “difficult passage,” “puzzling.” Yet, scholars generally agree: “the fig tree stands for the Temple, Israel or the religious authorities.” However, this ignores the indisputable fact that different nations had different arboreal symbols, and the fig tree represented Rome, not Israel or anything Jewish. The palm represented Israel and all things Jewish, the olive Athens, etc. Roman national symbols were never used to represent anything Jewish. Moreover, Mark’s gospel is thought to have been written in Rome at the time of Nero’s persecutions, and at that time it was widely related that Nero killed the sacred fig tree of Rome. Nero had the Christians of Rome executed in mimic theatrical performances. And, Mark’s fig tree story draws on the genre of Roman mime and the obscene myth of Dionysos and the fig. Mark calls the actor in the story “he” rather than “Jesus.” “He” mimes Nero killing the Roman fig, which, in turn, mimes the myth of Dionysos and the fig, which, in turn, mimes the ribald story of Alexander’s triumphant conquest of India. While previous scholarship has treated depictions of architecture as topographic markers, I argue that architectural depictions frequently served as potent cultural symbols, acting within the broader themes and ideological messages of sculptural monuments. This is true both for representations of particular historic buildings (identifiable depictions), and for the far more numerous depictions that were never meant to be identified with a specific structure (generic depictions). This latter category of depictions has been almost completely unexplored in scholarship. This dissertation seeks to fill this gap, and to situate architectural depictions within scholarship on state reliefs as a medium for political and ideological expression. I explore the ways in which architectural depictions, both identifiable and generic, were employed in state-sponsored sculptural monuments, or state reliefs, in the first and second centuries CE in and around the city of Rome. My work is innovative in combining the iconographic and iconological analysis of architectural depictions with theoretical approaches to the symbolism of built architecture, drawn from studies on acculturation (“Romanization”), colonial interactions, and imperialism.

In fact, the place where they first landed is called Troy, and from this it is named the Trojan canton. The nation as a whole is called Veneti. It is also agreed that Aeneas, an exile from home owing to a like misfortune, but conducted by the fates to the founding of a greater empire, came first to Macedonia, that he was then driven ashore at Sicily in his quest for a settlement, and sailing thence directed his course to the territory of Laurentum. This spot also bears the name of Troy.
