How British Leyland Grew Itself To Death By Geoff Wheatley British Car Network I have always wondered how a British motor company that made trucks and other commercial vehicles, ever got its hands on Jaguar, Triumph, and of course MG. Furthermore, how this successful commercial company managed to lose the goodwill and loyal customers of these popular vehicles. The story starts some fifteen years before British Leyland became part of the domestic vehicle market in the UK, and of course overseas, especially for Jaguar, a top international brand name in the post war years. In the early 1950s the idea of Group Industries was the flavor of the month. Any company worth its salt was ready to join forces with a willing competitor, or several competitors to form a “Commercial Group”. In consequence we had the Textile Groups, International Banking Groups, The British Nylon Group, Shell and BP Group etc. The theory was simple, by forming production groups producing similar products and exchanging both marketing and production techniques, costs would be reduced and sales would increase. The British Government, who had an investment in the British Motor Industry to help the growth of exports to earn needed US Dollars, was very much in favor of the Group Policy being applied to the major production companies in the UK including the Nuffield Organization and Austin Corporation. Smaller companies like Jaguar who were also successful exporters were encouraged to take the same view on production and sales, however they did not jump on the “Group” bandwagon and remained independent for a few more years. -

He'd apparently been undergoing great strain and anxiety over the prolong- ed illness and hospitalization of his wife, Gail. Shaun is convalescing at home now and receiving therapy that prom- ises to restore him to better health in the weeks ahead. The other good news is that Gail has also almost fully recovered and may be released from the hospital soon. The 1948–61 Morris Commercial ‘J’ type Forward Control Vans By Rick Feibusch The Morris Commercial “J” type Van was one of the many new postwar designs that were in troduced by the Nuffield Organization in 1948 along with the Morris Minor and Series MO Oxfords and Sixes. While first sold during the England’s early “Export Or Die” era, a program that linked steel allotments to export sales volume, few exported to the USA. Most Americans enthusiasts know this little truck because of the Dinky Toys model that was offered from 1956 in a number of liveries including a Royal Mail GPO van. (pictured at the top of the next page). While a number of smaller vans were available in Europe before WWII, this is one of the earliest examples of what we call a “minivan” today. It predates the VW microbus, widely accepted as the grandfather of the modern minivan, by two years! The ‘J’ type was introduced at the 1948 Commercial Motor Show at Earls Court. The preproduction version that Morris Commercial exhibited on their stand at the show differed in many details from the production vehicles that were to hit the streets in late 1949. The prewar style Easiclean (steel spoked artillery style) wheels gave way to pressed steel disc wheels, and the grille, headlamps and sidelights, as well as other items, were redesigned before full production commenced. It followed the emerging trend of having forward controls and sliding doors on each s ide and was made in both left and right hand drive versions. Morris Commercial had introduced the larger 15/20 cwt ‘PV’ model with a similar forward control layout in 1939, although few were made before the outbreak of the Second World War brought civilian production to a halt. -

As many of you know, the EatOut was a success, and there’s a section on it in this issue of The Square Rigger. Although the attendance was good, I’ve had a few requests for the 2013 EatOut to be held at a location that is more central to where most of us live. I am open to suggestions. On March 10 there will be a planning session for OBCDay at Muldoons in Rockville, MD http://www.mymuldoons.com/ Come April 21 and 22 we will be having the Twist Tutelage Tune-Up at Steve Woodall's place. The enrollment is limited to 12 cars and has only one or two openings left. If you are thinking of attending, I suggest not waiting until the last min- ute because John Twist, who will be conducting the seminar, has committed to working with 12 cars only. Even if you cannot bring your car, I feel it is still worth attending. May 4 through 6 will see the 2012 Mini-GOF hosted by Mike and Jennifer Ash and held in Yorktown, VA. It was very generous of them to host the event, so please let Mike and Jennifer know if you can help them in any way.
