Century-old race cars make motorsport history irresistibly real

Our newest Why I Drive video is old school. As in, more than a century old. There was a time when Brian Blain didn't know that pre-World War I race cars existed. Now he's dedicated to preserving every single remaining example, and keeping them driving. "A race car that sits in a museum is a travesty," Blain says. After seeing these cars in motion, we think you'll agree. by Aaron McKenzie // Hagerty News // January 30, 2019

Tech Session 2: Ignition System…a topic to spark one’s interests.

by Bob Horzmann The second technical session of this year was held at Brooklands Restoration on Monday, February 19, 2019. The subject for this session was ignition systems. We were welcomed by Christian Sora, the owner. Refreshments greeted the attendees and were much appreciated. The presentation was made by Adam Key. Not only were MG systems covered, but examples of other British marques intro- duced. Adam's expertise comes from twenty years of working on British cars both as a hobbyist and a professional. The ignition system is really quite basic. A battery furnishes 12 volts of potential. The ignition coil increases that potential to tens of thousands of volts to generate spark to ignite the gases in the cylinders. The critical part of this process is Photo by Bob Horzmann the method used to make those thousands of volts ignite those gases at just the right time. T HE S T . L OUIS MG M ETRO G AZETTE P AGE 1 3 Failed ignition, what’s the point... As was discussed in the ignition tech session, for nearly 70 years, just about every car had a points-based ignition system which first appeared on the 1910 Cadillac, and was used on most cars through the mid-1970s. The basic workings are familiar to any car buff. An ignition coil contains a pair of wind- ings around a ferrous core. A set of contact points inside the distributor are open and closed by lobes on distributor shaft as the engine spins. When the points are open, current is sent through the coil’s primary windings, creating an electric field. This sets This pitting actually decreases the point gap, up a magnetic field in the coil’s ferrous core. or more significantly, it decreases the time When the rotating engine causes the lobes that points are closed which does not allow on the distributor shaft to open the points, enough time for the system to build up the that current is abruptly shut off, the magnetic necessary high voltage for the spark plugs to field collapses, and that changing magnetic produce those tens of thousands of volts to field creates a second much stronger electric ignite the fuel mixture in the cylinders. field. The following message was received by the editor of the Metro Gazette...a plea for help: Hi, long time ol’ MG buddies, I am sending this appeal to a whole bunch of MG guys & gals that might have knowledge of the whereabouts of Arnolt Bertone MGs. The Greenwich Concours d’Elegance is certainly the most prestigious event in the Northeast and during the first weekend of June,2019 will be featuring a class for Arnolt Bertone MG’s and Arnolt Bristol’s. Last year, they had a tribute to Briggs Cunningham, his life and his cars and they managed to get all 27 Cunningham C3’s ever produced! Some of these were shipped in from overseas and of course Jay Leno’s C3 was there. They even had Briggs Cun- ningham’s 12 meter Yacht, Columbia, tied up to the adjacent dock, looking every bit as fresh as when it won the America’s cup race in 1958. Many years ago, I made an effort to keep track of these cars, but at this time I am only aware of a few. I fully realize that for west coast folks, this would be a long and costly haul, but it’s bound to be an event to be long remembered. Arnolt MG owners without restored cars should plan to attend anyway even without their car. This would certainly be an educational event for all owners.

Can anyone provide nice quality photos of restored cars? A number of you guys had original sales brochures. Could you send quality digital photos for publicity purposes? st The deadline for applications is March 31 . Please let me have any contact details or leads that you might be able to provide. Check out their website at greenwichconcours.com Time is truly of the essence, particularly if cars are nearing completion.

Cheers—Chris Nowlan [email protected]

************************ Chicago-based Stanley Arnolt ran a small string of successful local foreign car dealerships. While attending the 1952 Turin auto show, Arnolt was impressed by some Bertone designs on display and struck up a rapport with old man Giovanni. Arnolt would go on to sell a number of Bertone coach built cars under his name, including the Arnolt Aston, Arnolt Bentley, and Arnolt Bristol. It all started with the MG TD-based Arnolt MG and despite being built around a British-supplied chassis and Italian-built body, final assembly was done in Chicago, and the cars were considered domestics.

Jim: 314-406-2481 Phil: 314-761-5913 Our driving tour will take us to southeast Missouri. Wonderful driving blue-line roads, per- fect for the Jaguars, Classic Cars, British Marques, Miatas or any other cars that like open curvy scenic routes. Our primary destination is Elephant Rock State Park in Belleview, Mis- souri. Elephant Rocks State Park is a geologic reserve encompassing an outcropping of Precambrian granite. The state park is named for a string of large granite boulders which resemble a train of pink circus elephants. We’ll spend about 45 minutes at the park, giving you plenty of time to visit this very interesting sight. We will then have a short dash over to Ironton, Mo, where we will enjoy a private buffet lunch at Baylee Jo’s BBQ. After lunch, we are offering a bonus optional rallye down to Arcadia, Mo and High Valley Angus Ranch, where Ranch Owners Colleen and Dan Jarvis will give us a grand tour of their magnificent 9000 sq ft log home, and weather permitting, a hayride tour of their 500+ acre ranch. There will be a $5/car entry fee and $15/person for lunch, which includes your soft drinks and dessert. All fees will be collected at Bread Co. at regis- tration,PLEASE BRING CASH. We last rallied to Elephant Rock State Park in 2012 and it was a great success … enjoyed by all. Total travel is <100 miles each direction. We will pro- vide instructions coming and going, with a quick highway
