Vernacular Buildings and Urban Social Practice Nilsen Many of These Buildings Have Disappeared As the Result of Fire, Demolition, and Modernisation Cover Wooden buildings housed the majority of Swedish urban populations during the early modern era, but A doctoral thesis from the department of historical studies Nilsen Social Practice Urban Buildings and Vernacular many of these buildings have disappeared as the result of fire, demolition, and modernisation. They were University of Gothenburg built during periods of urban transformation; disdained for their rural look and for the fire hazard they represented they were nevertheless valued for being warm, affordable and movable. This study reveals the fundamental role played by the wooden house in the formation of urban Sweden and Swedish history. Wooden buildings were particularly suited to mass production and relocation, which helped to realise the ideal town plan in the transformation of Swedish urban space.Early modern wooden houses feature more as archaeological remains and less as preserved buildings every year, thus examination and comparison of these two distinct datasets combined with historical records is important in this study. The author establishes how log construction, timber framing and post and plank buildings were used for a wide range Vernacular Buildings and of functions in both central and peripheral locations, and within all strata of society. New strategies were developed to create affordable warm housing while the housing stock featured both change and continuity of layout; the storeyed house contributed to evolution of the multiple unit structure. Surprisingly, this study establishes that timber-framing was more prevalent geographically and functionally than previous Urban Social Practice research indicated. Andrine Nilsen has historical urban buildings archaeology as a special interest and undertook her doctoral Wood and people in studies at the Department of Historical Studies at the University of Gothenburg. Before this she worked in the project The early modern town - between the local and the global publishing on the subject of medieval wooden houses and early modern town plans. As part of this project, she co-organized the conference early modern Swedish society Urban Variation in 2013 and co-edited the subsequent publication. The AACCP network, Architecture, archaeology and contemporary city planning, grew out of this project and conference. Subsequently she co-organized Buildings in Society International in Stockholm in 2017. Nilsen has also explored questions of marginality, centre and periphery with Martina Hjertman in conference presentations and papers. They now aim to develop a project with the historian Joachim Östlund to investigate Gothenburg’s role in the Andrine Nilsen early modern transatlantic slave trade. • An Assessment of Park & Ride in Gothenburg
HANDELSHÖGSKOLAN - GRADUATE SCHOOL MASTER THESIS Supervisor: Michael Browne Graduate School An assessment of Park & Ride in Gothenburg A case study on the effect of Park & Ride on congestion and how to increase its attractiveness Written by: Sélim Oucham Pedro Gutiérrez Touriño Gothenburg, 27/05/2019 Abstract Traffic congestion is with environmental pollution one of the main cost externalities caused by an increased usage of cars in many cities in the last decades. In many ways, traffic congestion impacts the everyday life of both drivers and citizens. In this thesis, the authors study how one solution designed to tackle congestion, the Park & Ride service, is currently used in the city of Gothenburg, where it is referred as Pendelparkering. This scheme allows commuters to park their car outside the city and then use public transport to their destination, thus avoiding having more cars in the city centre and reducing congestion. The goal is to know to what extent it helps solving the problem of congestion as well as how it can be ameliorated to make it more attractive. In order to do so, an analysis of the theory on Park & Ride and traffic congestion is performed, including a benchmark of three cities using the system and different views on its effectiveness in reducing congestion. Then, an empirical study relating to the City of Gothenburg is realized. The challenges around Park & Ride and the way different stakeholders organise themselves to ensure the service is provided in a satisfying way are thoroughly investigated. Interviews with experts and users, on- site observations and secondary data collection were used as different approaches to answer these questions.

  • What Is the Nature of Good Government?
What is the Nature of Good Government? from Heaven and Hell by Emanuel Swedenborg A Unique Vision of the Afterlife The following pages contain a brief taste of heaven based on the visions of Emanuel Swedenborg (1688–1772), a Swedish sci- entist and mystic. They are taken from his best-known work, Heaven and Hell, orig- inally written and published in 1758 in Latin as De Coelo et Ejus Mirabilibus, et de Inferno, ex Auditis et Visis (Heaven and Its Wonders and Hell, Drawn from Things Heard and Seen). Heaven and Hell is a detailed descrip- tion of the afterlife based on Swedenborg’s personal experiences. The work includes discussions of what happens to us after we die, what it’s like to live in heaven (or in hell), and the nature of God and angels. Now celebrating its 250th anniversary, Heaven and Hell has been in print con- tinuously since its first publication, and it has been translated into twenty-three lan- guages. This translation was produced by George F. Dole for the New Century Edition of the Works of Emanuel Swe- denborg, published by the Swedenborg Foundation. The full translation includes an introduction by noted scholar Bern- hard Lang, extensive notes on the text, and other helpful references. This deluxe edition is available in hardcover and full- sized paperback; there is also a smaller Swedenborg Foundation portable edition without the introduction West Chester, Pennsylvania and endnotes. • www.swedenborg.com Forms of Government in Heaven Since heaven is differentiated into communities, and the larger communities consist of some hundreds of thousands of angels, and since all the people in a given community are involved in similar good but not in similar wisdom, it follows of necessity that there are forms of govern- ment.

  • Trafikled Eller Gata? Urbanitet I Halvperifera Delar Av Staden

Copyright c Helge Kragh, 2012 1 Newtonianism in the Scandinavian Countries, 1690-1790 HELGE KRAGH 1 Introduction In the present context, the Scandinavian countries refer to two national or administrative units, the one being Denmark and the other Sweden. In the period here considered, largely the century from 1690 to 1790, ‘Denmark’ means really Denmark-Norway, for until 1814 Norway was part of the double monarchy ruled by the king and his government in Copenhagen. It should also be kept in mind that parts of what is today Germany, namely Schleswig-Holstein, belonged to the kingdom. However, as far as language and culture were concerned, these parts of southern Denmark were more German than Danish, and they played no important role in the scientific life of the kingdom. Sweden covered a much larger geographical area than it does today. The country had expanded greatly during the seventeenth century, when not only Finland but also parts of the Baltic area and northern Germany came under Swedish rule. About 1720, after the Great Northern War, Sweden lost most of its possessions, but the major part of Finland remained as part of the country until Centre for Science Studies, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Aarhus University, Denmark.
