Ontario s Fish Cltre Proram Conserin bioiersity, enhancin shin opportnities ZONES 13 & 14 he Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry raises and stocks up to eight million healthy, wild strains of native species of fish into more than 1,200 T water bodies each year. About half are stocked into Great Lakes waters, while the rest are stocked into inland waters. We stock fish to maintain, enhance and create angling opportunities as well as to restore and conserve Ontario’s aquatic biodiversity. Wild strains of Lake Trout and Brook Trout are raised at facilities like the Dorion facility near Thunder Bay and the Chatsworth facility near Owen Sound. We are working to restore Atlantic Salmon to Lake Ontario at the Normandale facility near Simcoe, while helping to prevent the extinction of Aurora Trout in northeastern Ontario as well as developing culture practices for other rare species at other facilities. Walleye, Chinook Salmon, Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout and splake are stocked to provide angling opportunities and reduce angling pressure on stocks sensitive to over-harvest.
