CITATION CONIC HILL SITE OF SPECIAL SCIENTIFIC INTEREST Stirling Site code: 397 PLANNING AUTHORITY: Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park Authority NATIONAL GRID REFERENCE: NS 421916, NS 415912, NS 411918, NS413920 OS 1:50,000 SHEET NO: Landranger Series 56 1:25,000 SHEET NO: Explorer Series 347 AREA: 60.66 hectares NOTIFIED NATURAL FEATURES Geological: Igneous Petrology : Ordovician Igneous Biological: Woodlands : Upland oak woodland : Wet woodland Upland habitats : Subalpine calcareous grassland : Alkaline fen Invertebrates : Beetle assemblage : Moth assemblage DESCRIPTION Conic Hill Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) is comprised of several detached areas and lies on the east side of Loch Lomond, immediately north of the village of Balmaha. The largest portion of the SSSI constitutes the upland part, whilst the lower areas, adjacent to the loch shore, support woodland. Conic Hill is a composite site supporting varying rocks and soils, and wildlife habitats. The Highland Border Complex is of national importance and consists of a number of narrow, fault-bounded exposures of Ordovician sediments and igneous rocks, which crop out intermittently along the Highland Boundary Fault Zone between Arran and Stonehaven. The ultramafic and mafic rocks of the complex are interpreted as incomplete fragments of a greatly dismembered obducted ophiolite. A narrow zone of rocks belonging to the Complex is exposed north of Balmaha, on the eastern side of Loch Lomond. Exposures extending from the lakeside to Druim nam Beurach consist of detrital rocks which have yielded a chitinozoan fauna of probable Arenig age. The rocks contain a wide variety of ophiolitic clasts including serpentinite, gabbro, dolerite and spilite, which by implication were derived from an ophiolite of early Arenig, or more likely pre-Arenig age.

Editorial p1 The unseasonal temperatures seem to be causing confusion amongst Annual Dalry Bird Festival some of our birds. I heard Oystercatchers calling over Inverness around p2 midnight on 6th January and on the 7th, I noticed Blue Tits collecting feathers, presumably for nest building? A Field Trip to the Black Isle p2 Inverness seems to have largely missed out on Waxwings so far this winter, though there are still a few about. From the region, the largest Some Recent and not so flock I have heard of was of 1000 birds, seen at Kyleakin by people on Recent Sightings p3 their way to attend the Skye Conference on 17 November. Indoor Meetings & Field I have had up to 3 males and a female Brambling coming daily to my Trips p3 feeders since before Christmas. They were joined on 3rd January by two Waxwings which demolished an apple put out for the Blackbirds and Useful Contacts p4 also by a male Blackcap, the first I have seen in the garden at this time of year. Websites and Blogs about Birds and Birding in The mini conference held at the Gaelic College on Skye on Saturday 17 Highland p4 November 2012 was a great success. A write up will appear in a future issue of Scottish Birds. Thanks are due in large measure to Bob 2010 Highland Bird Report McMillan for promoting the idea, choosing the venue, inviting speakers p5 and for making the arrangements which together, make a bird conference so enjoyable.

This PDF contains tips and directions designed to minimize the amount of time you’ll have to spend investigating the passes available. Plan Parts of Your Holiday Before Deciding Whether to Buy a Free Entry Pass 1 If you’ll be booking a guided Outlander tour, do that FIRST. [See our Outlander Tours PDF: http://www.outlandishscotland.com/OutlanderTours.pdf ] Admission fees for the Outlandish places you’ll be taken to are sometimes included in the guided tour fee, so you may not need a Free Entry Pass to visit them. 2 After successfully booking a guided tour—or, if you’ll not be booking one—make a list of the places you plan to visit during your self‐guided touring days. 3 Compare your self‐guided Outlandish site list to the properties included in the Free Entry Passes available. [On the last page of this PDF is a table that lists all of the Outlander‐related properties associated with each of the Scottish Free Entry Passes, with individual entry and pass fees.] 4 After performing a comparison, you should be able to determine which pass will save you enough money to be worthwhile.

  • Noteworthy Descendants of the Clan Grant
Noteworthy Descendants of the Clan Grant Academia Isabel Frances Grant, MBE, LLD, was an author, historian, antiquarian, and founder of the Highland Folk Museum. Born in Edinburgh and educated in London, Dr. Grant was a descendant of the ancient family of Tullochgorm and the granddaughter of Field Marshal Sir Patrick Grant, GCB, GCMG. Dr. Grant wrote her first book, Everyday Life of an Old Highland Farm, in 1924. While traveling in Europe, she was influenced by the open air museum movement of the early 20th century. She started collecting items of Highland material culture and founded the Highland Folk Museum, called Am Fasgadh (The Shelter), firstly on the island of Iona, and later at Kingussie in Badenoch in 1944. Today, the museum is situated in Newtonmore. In recognition for her pioneering efforts, Miss Grant was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Edinburgh in 1948 and elevated to the rank of MBE in 1959. Dr. Grant wrote a number of books during her long life, including The Lordship of the Isles (1935), Highland Folk Ways (1961), and Periods in Highland History (1987, published posthumously with Hugh Cheape, PhD). Dr. I.F. Grant died in 1983 at the age of 96. Robert Edmond Grant, MD, FRCPE, FRS (1793-1874) established the Grant Museum of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy at University College, London, in 1828. He was born in Edinburgh and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. Dr. Grant was the first professor of zoology and comparative anatomy in England and personally donated many of the specimens, dissection materials, diagrams and lecture notes that comprise the collections of the museum today.
