In Hyde Park, the Serpentine is a muddy puddle, Rotten Row a giant heap of rubble cleared from bombsites. Morale must be boosted. Looking for someone to add a woman's touch to scripts for propaganda films, the Ministry of Information spots Catrin Cole, a copywriter for Caradoc and Finch. They call her in. Catrin is a bit out of her depth in her new job, but she's keen - especially when the film division gets the green light for the "true story" of the Starling twins, Lily and Rose, who defied their father to bring 54 stranded soldiers back from Dunkirk in a purloined fishing boat. Catrin goes to interview the pair, only to discover that what little truth there is in their story is not the sort the ministry would like told. Lissa Evans's cast of contrasting characters each have their own viewpoint. Evans's first two novels were jolly farces, and this could easily have been another, but the comedy is quieter, and deeply shadowed. Buckley and Parfitt, Catrin's mentors, may be professional bachelors, offhand, cynical and complacent, but Evans risks some awkwardness to give them hearts, histories and political convictions, too. The monstrosity of Hilliard's Their Finest Hour And A Half is undercut by the poignancy of his plight. Even a Their Finest Hour And A Half part, Ambrose's ex-wife Anthea, is no callous harpy, but a woman who made allowances for him as long as she possibly could. It's perhaps not wise of Evans to cast so bright a light on the techniques of commercial fiction: Buckley and Parfitt with their index cards, their "prefigurings" and "payoffs", the remorseless contrivances to hold the attention of "all the Mauds and Annies sitting in the one-and-nines If it seems real to them, then they'll believe every word. Doesn't matter if Their Finest Hour And A Half not true. Evans Their Finest Hour And A Half the inspiration of a childhood reading of How We Lived Then, Norman Longmate's chronicle of domestic Britain in wartime. At its best, her Orange longlisted novel comes close to Michael Moorcock's Mother London, or even Sarah Waters's The Night Watch, in illuminating not just the deprivations, but also the liberations of the war years. In a way, Evans suggests, the shifts and shears of wartime are not unlike the fudges and forcings of fiction. In the spotlight. But there's other work going on, too - work that might just seem a teeny bit trivial by comparison. A bunch of people making a feature film, for instance For the cast and crew, however, this is a very serious business. It's never been easy, getting a film made - and it's even more complicated when every draft of the script has to be approved by the Ministry of Information; when anyone, from star to tea-boy, can be called up at any moment; when Their Finest Hour And A Half restricted, the studio's under fire, and the catering consists largely of spam fritters. But there's Their Finest Hour And A Half film to be made, a British film based on a true story of bravery and self-sacrifice at Dunkirk, with a nice touch of romance and comedy thrown in. Not to mention a hundred and seventy-five extras, one dog and an American. If this is to be their finest hour, the cast and crew of Just An Ordinary Wednesday will have to give much more than the usual blood, toil, tears and sweat. Genre: Historical. Catrin (Gemma Arterton) is scurrying home through the blitzed streets at dusk. Without warning, she is sideswiped by a bomb blast. Blinking grit from her eyes, she stumbles into a pile of broken bodies. Her initial horror tips into laughter when she realises that they are shop mannequins. Then she notices that one of them is bleeding – a salesgirl lies amid the wreckage of the window display. While the dust and death is still clearing from the air, Catrin vomits from shock, silhouetted in a yawning archway. The scene elegantly combines twin themes in this bracing second world war romance from Lone Scherfig. It captures the savage uncertainty of life during wartime; and, in a nod to the film’s movie industry backdrop, it deftly peels back layers of reality and artifice. Arterton brings a grace and dignity to the role, which suggests reserves of courage in her character that the screenplay only hints at. Catrin left her home in the Welsh valleys for love. Her artist husband Ellis (Jack Huston) specialises in self-important daubs depicting industrial blight. His canvases are a tough sell. Which is why, when Catrin is offered a job at the Ministry of Information’s film division, she jumps at the chance. Swiftly graduating from Mr Cholmondley-Warner-style informationals, she finds herself chipping in with the female angle on a propaganda film about twin girls who filched their father’s boat to help with the evacuation of Dunkirk.

    Abstract This article discusses the relationship between UK film producers and Europe, offering a historical overview and an extended case study of an existing company, Number 9 Films. It argues that although UK film production and the attitude of policy makers have been shaped by American economic interests, Europe represents an important conceptual and cultural space that encourages producers to make films that are distinctively different from the dominant Hollywood model. Drawing on a range of commentators and original interviews, the article argues that in an era of regional porosity and transnationalism, the traditional polarity between European art cinema and commercial Hollywood is being reimagined and the boundaries re-drawn. This has created a shifting ‘middle ground’ that can be occupied by producers who are prepared to seek collaborations and funding from a varied range of sources. The case study of Number 9 Films analyses how these processes work in detail, examining the company’s multiple and cosmopolitan identities and its business model. It concludes by discussing the company’s move into ‘high end’ television drama production arguing that this shift is typical of independent UK film producers, demonstrating the increasing convergence between the two forms and also a further stage in the evolution of European audiovisual production. Bernie must time bursts of his engine to ride each approaching wave before it breaks as he pilots CG across the bar. Although he makes it over the bar, he loses his compass. Bernie steers CG to the stricken tanker. Although his boat's designated capacity is only 12 people, Bernie manages to rescue 32 crewmen. The stern of Pendleton begins sinking more rapidly during the rescue and goes down shortly after the last crewman comes aboard Bernie's boat.
