The Their Finest Hour: Volume II plan to marry on April 16, but in accordance with Coast Guard regulations, Bernie must seek permission from the station's commanding officer, Daniel Cluffalthough it is usually just a formality. Livesey volunteer to join Bernie on the rescue mission. Meanwhile, the Pendleton ' s engineer, Ray Sybert, as the surviving senior officer, organizes the surviving seamen to steer the sinking stern of the tanker onto a submerged reefwhere it can lodge until rescuers arrive. When Miriam hears that Bernie is leading the rescue effort, she, like a number of townspeople, thinks this is a suicide mission. Few people in Chatham trust Cluff, believing he could not possibly be capable of doing his job because he is not from the area. Miriam drives to the station, demanding that Cluff call Bernie back. Cluff refuses, and brusquely orders Miriam out. Between Chatham Harbor and the open sea lies a bar, a series of shoals that are very dangerous even in good weather. Bernie must time bursts of his engine to ride each approaching wave before it breaks as he pilots CG across the bar. Although he makes it over the bar, he loses his compass. Bernie steers CG to the stricken tanker. Although his boat's designated capacity is only 12 people, Bernie manages to rescue 32 crewmen. The stern of Pendleton begins sinking more rapidly during the rescue and goes down shortly after the last crewman comes aboard Bernie's boat. Relying on his knowledge of the coast Their Finest Hour: Volume II prevailing winds in place of his compass, Bernie steers CG toward home—a task made more difficult as Chatham loses power. Miriam and the other townspeople drive their cars to the pier and turn on their headlights to guide Bernie in. The end of the film shows photographs from the event that briefly document the aftermath of the rescue. Two months later, Bernie and Miriam marry; they stay together for 58 years until Bernie's death in Webber and his crew receive the Gold Lifesaving Medal. • Their Finest [12A] 2016|UK/Sweden|117 Min
Film Their Finest [12A] 2016|UK/Sweden|117 min UK release date 21st April 2017 Director Lone Scherfig Screenplay Gaby Chiappe Cinematographer Sebastian Blenkov Cast Gemma Arterton (Catrin Cole); Sam Claflin (Tom Buckley); Bill Nighy (Ambrose Hilliard); Jack Huston (Ellis Cole) London, 1940. Catrin (Gemma Arterton) is scurrying home through the blitzed streets at dusk. Without warning, she is sideswiped by a bomb blast. Blinking grit from her eyes, she stumbles into a pile of broken bodies. Her initial horror tips into laughter when she realises that they are shop mannequins. Then she notices that one of them is bleeding – a salesgirl lies amid the wreckage of the window display. While the dust and death is still clearing from the air, Catrin vomits from shock, silhouetted in a yawning archway. The scene elegantly combines twin themes in this bracing second world war romance from Lone Scherfig. It captures the savage uncertainty of life during wartime; and, in a nod to the film’s movie industry backdrop, it deftly peels back layers of reality and artifice. Arterton brings a grace and dignity to the role, which suggests reserves of courage in her character that the screenplay only hints at. Catrin left her home in the Welsh valleys for love. Her artist husband Ellis (Jack Huston) specialises in self-important daubs depicting industrial blight. His canvases are a tough sell. Which is why, when Catrin is offered a job at the Ministry of Information’s film division, she jumps at the chance. Swiftly graduating from Mr Cholmondley-Warner-style informationals, she finds herself chipping in with the female angle on a propaganda film about twin girls who filched their father’s boat to help with the evacuation of Dunkirk.

  • On Chesil Beach
NEW UK RELEASE DATE OF 18 MAY ANNOUNCED FOR ON CHESIL BEACH Starring SAOIRSE RONAN BILLY HOWLE Directed by DOMINIC COOKE Written by IAN MCEWAN ON CHESIL BEACH, starring Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird, Brooklyn, Atonement), three time Academy Award nominee, four time BAFTA nominee and recent winner of a Golden Globe, alongside Billy Howle (Dunkirk, The Sense of an Ending, The Seagull), will open in cinemas across the UK on 18 May. It is directed by Dominic Cooke (The Hollow Crown), four-time Olivier Award winning and BAFTA nominated theatre, TV and film director and writer. Ian McEwan has adapted the screenplay from his best-selling novel of the same name, which was shortlisted for the 2007 Booker Prize. The film recently received its UK premiere at the BFI London Film Festival following its international launch at Toronto International Film Festival. It is produced by Elizabeth Karlsen (Carol) and Stephen Woolley (Their Finest) of Number 9 Films. ON CHESIL BEACH is a BBC Films presentation, in association with Rocket Science, Golan Films and Lipsync. It is summer 1962, and England is still a year away from huge social changes: Beatlemania, the sexual revolution and the Swinging Sixties. Florence (Ronan) and Edward (Howle) are just married and honeymooning on the dramatic coastline of Chesil Beach in Dorset. However, the hotel is old fashioned and stifling, and underlying tensions between the young couple surface and cast unexpected shadows over their long anticipated wedding night. From the precise depiction of two young lovers, to the touching story of how their unexpressed misunderstandings and fears shape the rest of their lives, ON CHESIL BEACH is a tender story which shows how the entire course of a life can be changed, by a gesture not made or a word not spoken.

  • Abstract This Article Discusses the Relationship Between UK Film
Abstract This article discusses the relationship between UK film producers and Europe, offering a historical overview and an extended case study of an existing company, Number 9 Films. It argues that although UK film production and the attitude of policy makers have been shaped by American economic interests, Europe represents an important conceptual and cultural space that encourages producers to make films that are distinctively different from the dominant Hollywood model. Drawing on a range of commentators and original interviews, the article argues that in an era of regional porosity and transnationalism, the traditional polarity between European art cinema and commercial Hollywood is being reimagined and the boundaries re-drawn. This has created a shifting ‘middle ground’ that can be occupied by producers who are prepared to seek collaborations and funding from a varied range of sources. The case study of Number 9 Films analyses how these processes work in detail, examining the company’s multiple and cosmopolitan identities and its business model. It concludes by discussing the company’s move into ‘high end’ television drama production arguing that this shift is typical of independent UK film producers, demonstrating the increasing convergence between the two forms and also a further stage in the evolution of European audiovisual production. Keywords European; identity; regional porosity; cosmopolitan; producers; production companies; ‘Being European’: UK Production Companies and Europe Andrew Spicer, UWE Bristol ‘We have our own unwritten brief to make European films over a wide range of subjects that appeal to us’ (Stephen Woolley, co-founder, Number 9 Films). ‘We consider ourselves to be UK and European’ (Elizabeth Karlsen, co-founder Number 9 Films).
