  • Jean Hugel (1924-2009)
JEAN HUGEL (1924-2009) (Taken from a conversation with Nick Clarke M.W. on 9th February 2005, in Riquewihr) Jean Frédéric (“Johnny”) Hugel was born in Riquewihr, Alsace, France on 28th September 1924, the middle son of Jean and Lina Hugel. His elder brother Georges was born in 1922, and his younger brother André in 1929. After 3 years in Riquewihr primary school, Jean was sent to Paris for a few years “to lose my Germanic Alsace accent" and speak proper French, at the Lycée Pasteur in Neuilly, where his uncle taught. However, as most of the pupils were sons of foreign diplomats in Paris, it was perhaps not the best place to pick up a pure French accent ! Despite being "a country boy in the big city" his exam results were excellent and he did not feel out of his depth, so “the village primary school could not have been so bad after all...” In September 1936 Jean entered the Lycée Bartholdi in Colmar (named after the creator of such monumental works as the Statue of Liberty, the Lion of Belfort etc., who was born and lived in Colmar). He studied there until 18th June 1940 when "we had visitors"... France had capitulated after the German invasion and troops crossed the Rhine to occupy Alsace. "Our friends across the river wanted to give us the benefit of their nationality". Jean continued to study in the same school, which on 3rd September was renamed "Matthias Grünewald Oberschule", but from then on all lessons were taught in German. The French language was banned in Alsace and could not even be taught as a foreign language in schools whereas English was compulsory.

Remarkably varietal, essence-of- gewurztraminer aromas for a wine at this extreme level of ripeness and botrytis: all yellow fruits, rose petal and spices, lifted by bright acidity. Glyceral-thick, pure and chewy as a solid, with utterly captivating and amazingly clean high-toned flavors of lichee, jasmine, rose, linden flower, white pepper and smoked bacon. Finishes with astounding spicy persistence and powerful structure. This one may go 50 years. 98(+?) 2007 Domaine Schoffit Pinot Gris Rangen Clos Saint Theobald (9.4% alcohol, 265 g/l r.s. and 9.5 acidity) Pale yellow-gold. Almost a raisiny ripeness to the nose but with superb lift to the nobly rotten aromas of crystallized peach, honeycomb and orange marmalade. Glyceral-thick but with superb acidity giving this nectar even more energy and finesse than the VT. An essence of pure, carnal, botrytized pinot gris that almost magically retains the character of the variety. Wonderfully long and alive, with an almost citric brightness on the back. I don't expect to experience another bottle of this elixir, but it sure is easy to drink. 98 2007 Domaine Albert Mann Pinot Gris Altenbourg Le Tri (9.5% alcohol, 237 g/l r.s. and 10.2 grams acidity) Bright, full yellow- gold. Knockout high-toned nose offers roasted, botrytis-rich aromas of honeycomb, tobacco, cherry-almond and vanilla.

Auslese - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Page 1 of 2 Auslese Your continued donations keep Wikipedia running! From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Auslese (literal meaning: "selected harvest"; plural form is Auslesen ) is a German language wine term for a late harvest wine and is a riper category than Spätlese in the Prädikatswein category of the Austrian and German wine classification.[1] The grapes are picked from selected very ripe bunches in the autumn (late November-early December), and have to be hand picked. Generally Auslese wine can be made in only the best harvest years that have been sufficiently warm. A small proportion of the grapes may be affected by noble rot in some regions although this never dominates the character of the wine. Rheingau winemaker Schloss Johannisberg is generally credited with discovering Auslese wine in 1787. [2] Auslesen are sometimes considered a German dessert wine, especially the wines made from botrytis infected bunches, though it is not as sweet as Eiswein, Beerenauslese (BA), or Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA) dessert wines.
