Background The Town of Huntsville's Cultural Strategy 2011 contained 27 recommendations. Progress on the Cultural Strategy has been regularly reported. A status update "Culture Strategy Update" was presented to the Arts, Cultural and Heritage Advisory Committee on February 23, 2016: 25 of 27 goals were "finished/ongoing" and the remaining 2 were "started/needs attention." Some of the goals were completed or outdated. "Culture Strategy Direction" Report CS-2016-16 was then presented and Motion ACH8-16, including a commitment for community engagement and collaboration, was passed by the Advisory Committee: "The Manager of Arts, Culture & Heritage work via Advisory Committee, staff, sector professionals and stakeholders to draft a Huntsville Culture Strategy whitepaper, 2016 to 2019, to better reflect the direction of current council and to implement these directions." This motion was amended at General Committee on March 30, 2016. Massey Family of Agricultural Implement Fame World Dominance Beginning in Grafton
THE MASSEY FAMILY OF AGRICULTURAL IMPLEMENT FAME WORLD DOMINANCE BEGINNING IN GRAFTON Daniel Massey Jr was four years old when his father, Daniel, and mother, Rebecca (Kelly) moved from Vermont to Grafton, Ontario in 1802. He was just fourteen when the war of 1812 began, his father and two older brothers left home to join the Upper Canadian militia, and Daniel was left in charge of the family farm. In this new role Daniel honed his skills, learned blacksmithing and would often repair the farm machinery. In 1820, he married his childhood sweetheart, Lucina Bradley, and began their family of ten. In 1830, while visiting relatives in Watertown, New York, Daniel was thrilled by a mechanical thresher. He had it disassembled and shipped to his farm in Haldimand Township. Now eleven men could accomplish what had previously taken twenty farm hands with flails! Daniel studied this machine and made its replacement parts. He was making other tools and implements for neighbouring farmers as well. In 1844, he turned over the farm operation to his son Hart (1823-1896) so he could devote more time to working on machinery. A small foundry and blacksmithing shop, just south of Newcastle, at the harbour called Bond Head, had closed. Convinced of his ability to manufacture agricultural machinery, Daniel moved the younger members of his family to this location in 1847. Two years later he was employing 10 people at his Newcastle Foundry and Manufactory. One of Daniel's early products was a stump remover that used torque to twist stumps out of the ground. -

REASONS FOR DESIGNATION: 915 KING STREET WEST ATTACHMENT NO. 12B Massey-Harris Office Building Description The property at 915 King Street West is worthy of designation under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act for its cultural heritage value or interest, and meets the criteria for municipal designation prescribed by the Province of Ontario under the three categories of design, historical and contextual value. Located on the south side of King Street West, west of Strachan Avenue, the building was constructed as the administrative offices for the Massey Manufacturing Company, with additions after the firm became known as Massey-Harris Limited. Historical records indicate that a two-storey building was completed at the north end of the site in 1885, with the third floor and a three-storey south wing added in two stages before World War I. The property was listed on the inaugural City of Toronto Inventory of Heritage Properties in June 1973, and a Heritage Easement Agreement was registered in 1989. The Massey-Harris Office Building has been converted into a residential condominium. Statement of Cultural Heritage Value The Massey-Harris Office Building is a representative example of a late 19th century commercial building that was constructed in stages, with the different sections united stylistically by the application of Classical details. Of particular importance are the series of bay windows on the original (north) building, and the sculptural detailing above the main (east) entrance and on the large (north) pediment. In London our Vice President Stephen Fry honoured us with his ‘svelte’ presence and a great speech about Noël who he Econfessed was someone he never met but who had shaped so much of his approach to life. Stephen admits he is a huge admirer of Noël’s diligence - something he endeavours to emulate in his own life. Barbara Longford welcomed Stephen with a resumé of the statue’s history: “ This statue, by Angela Conner, was commissioned at the behest of the late Graham Payn, for the Centenary Celebrations of Coward’s birth, in 1999. It was unveiled by Sir Noël’s friend, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, on 8th December, 1998, in the presence of Graham and an illustrious gathering of devotees. Two other casts are situated at Sir Noël’s grave at Firefly in Jamaica and also in the Theater Hall of Fame, at the Gershwin Theatre in New York and every year, on the Saturday nearest to his birthday, members of the Noël Coward Society gather, in London and New York for a flower-laying ceremony.
