ach October, Camp Hearne invites WWII re-enactors to join us in a special E event to enrich our visitors’ museum experience. These flying museums will be available for tours and will offer rides for purchase by the public to help support their preservation efforts. Since the flight path is over the Camp’s historic site, visitors at both venues will be able to see, hear, and feel the roar of these wonderfully preserved vintage planes. The Yellow Rose The B-25J Mitchell medium range bomber was the preferred aircraft used by Col. James “Jimmy” Doolittle for the first US strike against Japan after the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. The San Marcos based Yellow Rose was used in the deserts of North Africa, hence her camouflage exterior. It is fitting this warbird join our WWII Living History Event since most POWs interned at Camp Hearne were from Rommel’s elite Afrika Korps.

come celebrate our more recent past at our newly renovated airfield On Saturday, October 19, 2013, some sixty years after the U.S. Air Force’s Hearne Field was formally dedicated as an auxiliary landing strip to the Bryan Air Force Base, Hearne Municipal (KLHB) will be celebrating recent efforts to better serve the general aviation needs of Hearne, Robertson County, the Brazos Valley, and central Texas. For an airfield that hasn’t changed much since Cold War fighter pilots shot landings there from 1954 to 1961, the upcoming celebration is the culmination of a multi-year effort under which Hearne officials have been working hard to get millions of dollars for airport improvements from numerous TxDOT Aviation grants, federal monies, and Hearne’s 4A Sales Tax Board.

Completed improvements include: AWOS weather system; French drains with culverts along existing t-hangars; renovated pilots’ lounge; new airport lay-out plan; new wastewater run-off plan; new emergency spill containment plan; new FAA GPS navigation- al approach; several re-surfacing and re-striping of and taxiways. Recently, our new self-service fuel farm (which will continue to offer some of the lowest-priced AvGAS in the area) began operations. Plus, a game fence will be constructed this winter. A private investor has built and is currently leasing four, two-plane hangars. Hearne is re- questing another grant to build ten t-hangars in future years. Things are happening in the Hearne. Come look into our more recent past and be a part of our fantastic future!
