“It's Not a Death Wish, It's a Life Wish”
“I Don’t Want to Die, But I Accept That it Can Happen”: Taking Risks and Doing Gender Among BASE Jumpers by CAITLIN ANDREA FORSEY B.A. (Honours), University of Winnipeg, 2007 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Sociology) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) August 2009 © Caitlin Andrea Forsey 2009 Abstract Using ethnographic data generated through semi-structured interviews with 16 male BASE jumpers, observations of over 1000 BASE jumps (parachuting from fixed objects such as Buildings, Antennas, Spans and Earth), and textual analyses of BASE-related websites, images, and publications, this research provides a sociocultural analysis of the relationship between masculinity and voluntary risk-taking. Drawing on wider debates about modernization, individualization, technology, gender relations, embodiment, and the sociology of the everyday, I illustrate the multifaceted nature of this phenomenon, in addition to the advantages of using a theoretically diverse approach. I link the emergence of BASE jumping in contemporary Western society to military history and the synthesis of two extreme sports, namely, bungee jumping and skydiving. I explore the practices, ethics, technologies, and mentoring styles specific to the practice, with the goal of demonstrating how BASE jumping integrates individuals into social groups. An analysis of the gender regime operating within the BASE community reveals tensions between engagement in the practice and issues of responsibility related to fatherhood, marriage, and other intimate relations. My findings further suggest BASE jumping provides a forum for learning, practicing, and perfecting valued skills within the localized field of the BASE community, in addition to other spheres of personal and professional life. -

Before the term enduro was coined every country had its own name for the sport. The first European title in "regolarità", as it was called in Italy, was taken by Husqvarna in 1982 with Italian Gualtiero Brissoni in the saddle. After several European titles were taken by iconic names such as Thomas Gustavsson and Sven Erik Jonsson, in 1990 the sport was given the title World Enduro Championship by the FIM and Otakar Kotrba won the honour for Husqvarna, the first in a long series. To date Husqvarna has taken 49 world enduro titles and a total of 82 in motocross, enduro and supermotard events in the company's 100+ year history. Enduro is endurance, in all conditions with special tests over different types of terrain. Both rider and bike must reach the finish line after many hours of off-road trails without any external assistance apart from the brief time controls. It is the experience gained from these victories that has produced the Husqvarna enduro series, which year by year incorporate the technical advances made on the tracks. In 2012 Husqvarna will officially compete in the Enduro World Championship, represented by Team CH Racing, and will also be present at major national events in Spain, France, Germany, UK, Italy, the U.S., Australia and Japan. -

Subaru Rally Team USA drivers David Higgins and Dave Mirra head to Los Angeles this week to compete in Summer X Games 17. Higgins and Mirra look to add to the team’s successes at X Games competing in the Rally Car and Rallycross events July 30th and 31st respectively. Each will drive a 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI modified for Rallycross with an excess of 550 horsepower Boxer engine and Symmetrical All Wheel Drive. For 2011, Higgins won the Rally America Championship after three overall wins and two second place finishes of the six events of the series. In June, he smashed the 13-year course record at the Mt. Washington Hill Climb and placed second at the A Main final of the Global Rallycross series at Pikes Peak. David is competing in his first X Games. “I have heard so much about the X Games and have watched from home many times so I’m really looking forward to being a part of it,” said Higgins. “There really is nothing like it in the world and to be racing on the streets of Los Angeles should be spectacular for the drivers and the fans.” David Higgins, a native of the Isle of Man, got his first taste of motorsport when he was only eight years old and has enjoyed success ever since.
