Autumn 2011 The Official Newsletter of the Crosspool Forum Volume 8 Issue 3 Having a voice . Making a difference TM. 0ver 2700 copies delivered quarterly Editor Ian Hague Local Dignitary Opens Crosspool Summer Fayre We were very pleased and delighted, when a founder CDYST trustee, Malcolm Clements kindly agreed to open our 2011 Summer Fayre. Held in high regard, and a valued member of the community, Malcolm was a prominent member of the trustees committee for many years, and very much involved in making sure that we are still able to benefit from the very much appreciated Sports facilities at Coldwell Lane . “It is a great pleasure to know that the Crosspool community is thriving and has such an active spirit. As I stand here my mind goes back to the time, over 50 years ago now, when the idea was born to buy a field Malcolm Clements for the use of the children of this area- an open space for sport and recreation among the buildings going up. Prime movers in this project were Ron Peck, Head Teacher at Lydgate School, Dr Marjorie Rushbrook of Manchester Road Surgery, Revd. Alan Jockel, Vicar of St. Columba’s and Revd. Norman Webb, Minister of Stephen Hill. Because I was the Youth Council Secretary of Stephen Hill at that time they invited me on to the Committee and, when the Trust was formed, to be one of the first Trustees of the Crosspool and District Sports Trust with them. I worked with the Trust for over 20 years. Within a year or two the money, £6500 was raised to buy this field from St.

  • The Coach House Middlewood Hall | Mowson Lane | Worrall | Sheffield | S35 0AY the COACH HOUSE
The Coach House Middlewood Hall | Mowson Lane | Worrall | Sheffield | S35 0AY THE COACH HOUSE Middlewood Hall is set in a private, rural position and we were initially attracted by the peace and solitude offered by the property. Approached via a long-shared driveway and surrounded by 60 acres of green belt, it’s always a pleasure to come home and relax at the end of a busy day,” say the vendors. A classic early C19 Grade II listed hall once set in 54 acres of stunning parkland and woodland. Originally commissioned in 1810 for a family of Sheffield steel forgers and later a luxury hotel, this splendid coach house is now available to purchase separately offering a feel of stately grandeur for reasons not least of which as it retains a stunning approach through beautiful parkland via a long drive studded with mature trees and with a wooded backdrop and distant views. Through substantial stone gate piers this beautiful mellow sandstone home resides by a paddock, landscaped gardens, outbuildings and double garage. Five bedrooms and lofty reception rooms are arranged around a superb two storey galleried dining hall, with beams exposed to the ridge and where light cascades through its massive stone archway with delicate lunette windows and French doors. There is fine detail all around. Neat coursed, hand tooled mellow sandstone walls sit beneath natural graded stone roof slates. Original openings are generous and flood the property with light and further styled with Oeil-de-boeuf and Oculus windows to the elevations and gable, each subtly framed with carved stone cavetto moldings.

  • The Stabbing of George Harry Storrs
THE STABBING OF GEORGE HARRY STORRS JONATHAN GOODMAN $15.00 THE STABBING OF GEORGE HARRY STORRS BY JONATHAN GOODMAN OCTOBER OF 1910 WAS A VINTAGE MONTH FOR murder trials in England. On Saturday, the twenty-second, after a five-day trial at the Old Bailey in London, the expatriate American doctor Hawley Harvey Crippen was found guilty of poi soning his wife Cora, who was best known by her stage name of Belle Elmore. And on the following Monday, Mark Wilde entered the dock in Court Number One at Chester Castle to stand trial for the stabbing of George Harry Storrs. He was the second person to be tried for the murder—the first, Cornelius Howard, a cousin of the victim, having earlier been found not guilty. The "Gorse Hall mystery," as it became known from its mise-en-scene, the stately residence of the murdered man near the town of Stalybridge in Cheshire, was at that time almost twelve months old; and it had captured the imagination of the British public since the morning of November 2, 1909, when, according to one reporter, "the whole country was thrilled with the news of the outrage." Though Storrs, a wealthy mill-owner, had only a few weeks before erected a massive alarm bell on the roof of Gorse Hall after telling the police of an attempt on his life, it did not save him from being stabbed to death by a mysterious intruder. Storrs died of multiple wounds with out revealing anything about his attacker, though it was the impression of [Continued on back flap] THE STABBING OF GEORGE HARRY STORRS THE STABBING OF JONATHAN GOODMAN OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY PRESS COLUMBUS Copyright © 1983 by the Ohio State University Press All rights reserved.
