Portland Hotel, 1890 By Unknown The Portland Hotel opened in 1890. It had eight floors, 326 bedrooms, and extensive dining facilities, and the design suggested substance and elegance rather than opulence and frivolity. In a sense, it reflected something of Portland’s conservative (some said dull) character. All told, the hotel had cost well over a million dollars and taken years to complete. Railroad magnate Henry Villard began construction of the Portland Hotel, however, his finances collapsed and progress halted for over two years. When George B. Markle, Jr. came to Portland he decided to begin a campaign to raise enough local money and support to complete the hotel. He succeeded in getting acquainted with the “right” sort in Portland and generated interest and capital from notables such as Henry W. Corbett and William S. Ladd. Over 150 Portlanders subscribed to Markle’s plan, and construction of the hotel resumed. Until it was torn down in 1951, the Portland Hotel stood between Southwest Morrison and Yamhill, on Sixth Street, facing the Pioneer Courthouse. When the parking structure that replaced the hotel was in turn replaced by Pioneer Square in 1984, the iron scrollwork gate that had graced the hotel was incorporated into the design of the new public space. Ecosystem Use by Indigenous People in an Oregon Coastal Landscape

Zobel, Department of Botany and Plant Pathology, Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon 97331- 2902 e-mail: [email protected] Ecosystem Use by Indigenous People in an Oregon Coastal Landscape Abstract Data regarding probable uses of biological materials by the indigenous people of the Salmon River-Cascade Head area of the Oregon coast were used to estimate the peoples use of various ecosystems near villages. Of 308 uses identified, 256 were attributable to a given species; 124 species were identified. All local ecosystems were important sources of organisms for the people, with no apparent concentration of highly used species in any particular ecosystem. One species was cultivated, one domesticated, and five acquired by trade. Four major plant resources, camas, yew, hazel, and beargrass, are not known from the Cascade Head landscape, but may have been available from elsewhere in village territory. House construction without use of cedar planks, as indicated by ethnographic records, may have resulted from the paucity of western redcedar in the Salmon River lowlands. The scarcity of several widely used taxa near coastal village sites, especially western redcedar, may have limited the wealth of this indigenous population, even on the resource-rich Oregon coast. Bark, Jr. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1021, Lot 19 On October 27, 2009 the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation of the Brill Building and the proposed designation of the related Landmark site. The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with provisions of law. Three people spoke in support of designation, including representatives of the owner, New York State Assembly Member Richard N. Gottfried, and the Historic Districts Council. There were no speakers in opposition to designation.1 Summary Since its construction in 1930-31, the 11-story Brill Building has been synonymous with American music – from the last days of Tin Pan Alley to the emergence of rock and roll. Occupying the northwest corner of Broadway and West 49th Street, it was commissioned by real estate developer Abraham Lefcourt who briefly planned to erect the world’s tallest structure on the site, which was leased from the Brill Brothers, owners of a men’s clothing store. When Lefcourt failed to meet the terms of their agreement, the Brills foreclosed on the property and the name of the nearly-complete structure was changed from the Alan E. Lefcourt Building to the, arguably more melodious sounding, Brill Building. Designed in the Art Deco style by architect Victor A. Bark, Jr., the white brick elevations feature handsome terra-cotta reliefs, as well as two niches that prominently display stone and brass portrait busts that most likely portray the developer’s son, Alan, who died as the building was being planned. -

Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyze the dispersion of architectural types within the Willamette Valley revealed trends amongst the extant settlement architecture samples. Brownsville, Oregon, was identified to have a locally-specific architectural subtype, the closer study of which enabled deeper investigation of the development of architectural landscapes during the Willamette Valley’s settlement period. -

Oregon Land Donation Records
Oregon Land Donation Records Lyn Rasmussen, CGsm FamilySearch Introduction An offer of free land was hard to resist. The Donation Land Claim Act of 1850 offered just that in Oregon Territory’s Willamette Valley. The act became law on September 27, 1850. For those living in the Territory, or who arrived before the December 1, 1850 deadline, the grant was 320 acres for a male citizen 18 or older (or those who had legally declared intention to become a citizen) or 640 acres to a married couple. This legitimized the provisional land claims made before the 1850 act. Disallowed from land were African Americans and Indians, but American Indian half-breeds could apply. Those arriving in Oregon after the December 1, 1850 deadline and before December 1, 1855 (the expiration of the law) were eligible to receive half the amount of donation land. The size of the land piece was dependent upon the date of arrival and the marital status of the claimant. The law allowed for 320 acres of designated land free to a married man and his wife. A single man was eligible for 160 acres. In an extension of the law in 1854 land was available but sold for $1.25 per acre, with the cap of 320 acres. After 1862 the Homestead Law applied to Oregon land. Claimants were to live on the land and cultivate it for four years and after having done so would own it outright.1 The potential for a nice homestead in Oregon was motivation for tens of thousands of white settlers to migrate to the Oregon Territory from 1850 through 1855.
