The Interior Architecture Advisory Group believes that as a Knowledge Community we all can and should contribute to form a meaningful, intuitive knowledge base that represents Interior Architecture as -based practice as well as a . We’d like to identify and better serve the needs of our members and practitioners; to support local initiatives in establishing new components in the Interior Architecture network ; make greater use of new tools to access resources for design and practice; extend the reach of our successful scholarship model from its LA origins to new locations as a vehicle to establish new local Interior Architecture groups – in short, a flexible kit of parts that affords you, as members, as much or as little to support you in your practice. Interior Architecture represents one of the largest areas of practice in the profession, as well as one of the most accessible -- horizontal, applicable to a broad range of building types and projects. Interior find themselves applying their expertise to a range of different projects, while base–building colleagues may specialize in a particular type of building, be it housing, or health care, or justice and so forth. As current conditions lead more firms to seek to expand into Interior Architecture, access to more in-depth, pragmatic, experience-based information related to best practices will become critical. We will also have to establish benchmarks in education and support the development of a new generation of Interior Architects, trained for the demands of an evolving practice area. WE NEED YOUR HELP. We would like to hear what you think about Interior Architecture. With that in mind, we’ll start the conversation off with a simple question: What is Interior Architecture? What specialized knowledge have you gained in your practice? What are your needs and challenges? What consistent principles and emerging trends define our discipline? What are your expectations and aspirations?

It differs from Interior Design in its regard to code issues, constructibility, programming, and a higher degree of coordination. 16 It is the design of humane and well connected spaces that reflect synergies and Feb 22, 2010 3:40 PM systemic approaches among disciplines. 17 Interior architecture, to me, is an architectural response to a building interior. That Feb 22, 2010 3:40 PM is, more than a purely decorative response. Our practice focuses on even beyond a purely LEED based approach. We look specifically at healthy interiors as they relate to planning as well as material and HVAC-comfort related issues. Specific needs would relate to innovations in materials. 18 Interior architecture is the practice that impacts what is left following the design of Feb 22, 2010 3:41 PM the shell, supporting functions and exterior. It is defined and impacted by all of those decisions. I have learned that a poor decision by the individual creating the shell can greatly impact our ability to create a functional, enjoyable interior space. The most constant trent is to incorporate ways that will maximize the utilization of the interior footprint, thereby mazimizing the value of the expenditures for lease, or the finishing of the space. Trends in architecture come and go, but quality work einvironments are timeless. 19 a comprehensive undersanding and molding of space beyond the physical Feb 22, 2010 3:41 PM architecture limits - througt hte use of lighting, textures, furniture etc. 20 Interior Architecture incorporated design services for everything within the exterior Feb 22, 2010 3:41 PM walls of a building. It would not include designing the envelope of the builidng, the overall structural, mechanical or electrical systems, site planning, assessment or anything outside of the builidng exterior walls. It could involve incorporating the services of Mechanical, Electrical and Structural engineers to accomplish MEP distribution systems or limited structural services for those disciplines. 21 The creation of holy space. Holy as in for people, not just for religious purpose. It Feb 22, 2010 3:41 PM involves interior design but also the shape of the building surrounding it.

2 of 56 Response Text 22 Our firm, Vernacular Studio, strives to promote the importance of interior Feb 22, 2010 3:41 PM architecture given it is the setting in which most people interact and spend their time. Most of the particular knowledge comes from this scale shift - whether it is designing millwork that fits the ergonomics of a range of individuals, to the MEP systems required for individual comfort and effieincy.

Sustainability is teaching us again that the individual and community are inseparably linked. 34 That is certainly a loaded question(s), but to me it is the exploration, translation Feb 22, 2010 3:44 PM and specification of the 'micro'. Architecture deals with the 'macro' scale of things, from structure of the building through . Interior Architucture is everything from structure down to the smallest of all details.

3 of 56 Response Text 35 Interior architecture is the art of laying out a space efficiently and aesthetically Feb 22, 2010 3:44 PM pleasingly. I am an accessibility specialist and have been consulting and designing in that arena for 6 years Challenges is to get the client to understand that there is a process and that things take time. Social media networking is an emerging trend. This is the way we are now communicating who we are and what we do to our potential clients I expect that things will be tough for a while longer and that only a few persistent firms will survive. I aspire to be a survivor. 36 In my opinion, Interior architecture could be a bit of a misnomer and not sure if it's Feb 22, 2010 3:44 PM something the profession wants to "distinguish". Architecture is architecture no matter what portion of the builidng, or built environment we approach. The formation of an exterior building, encloses an interior, so interior and exterior architecture is not exclusive. Now, that's the lofty ideal, however we sometimes encounter a shell condition in retail where it's mostly about the interior space. We understand these shell conditions that allow us to efficiently design spaces in an interior environment. 37 Construction for habitation within the shell of a structure. Knowledge specialty Feb 22, 2010 3:44 PM depends upon different use groups being designed for. Primarily specialty leads us to ask the right questions to design a space to meet the unique needs of each clients. Needs may be greater efficiency in material and product searches, and challenges are often budgetary in nature.....finding the most elegant and least expensive way of resolving a problem. consistent principles are comfort and ability to meet unique needs of client. Lighting seems like it will be changing significantly over the next 5-10 years in terms of what is commercially available. Expectations and aspirations are to exceed clients expectations and design spaces that enhance the activities that take place in them. 38 Architecture within and even around an existing wrapper. My expectations would Feb 22, 2010 3:44 PM be to maintain a healthy working environment for long term solutions to each problem we tackle. I hope that we as architects stop chasing trends and in design, pplitics and economics 39 Interior Architecture is the realm of design falling within a building and within Feb 22, 2010 3:45 PM structure/shell parameters. Specialized knowledge is especially in cultural and spiritual aspects. Also open building technologies/approaches. Needs pertain mainly to new and emergent knowledge. Also research and evidence-based design and decision-making. Trends of most significance pertain to agility, mutability and . Expectations are high and aspirations focus on performative dimensions of practice/product. 40 Interior Architecture is the tying together of the exterior visual experience with the Feb 22, 2010 3:45 PM interior visual experience of a building. 41 We see interior architecture as creating the framework of our interior spaces. We Feb 22, 2010 3:45 PM look for ways to improve interiors in the areas of lighting design, daylighting, non toxic and sustainable finishes, and new products to incorporate into our interiors. 42 Interior Architecture is not a distinct element of Architecture, but a completion of Feb 22, 2010 3:45 PM the building as a whole. 43 I have participated in the design and construction of many interior projects but I Feb 22, 2010 3:45 PM have never had the chance to utilize or propose sustainable materials or systems. I would like to learn more about sustainable materials that are attractive enough to compete with the aesthetic characteristics of traditional finishes. 44 Interior architecture is more about the use and character of space and things we Feb 22, 2010 3:45 PM interact with up close than traditional architecture. It needs to encompass a more rigorous understanding of how people use their spaces: function, feeling and the chemistry of the environment. It also can more often be lead by emotional decision making rather than most building projects. This is because people live in the spaces and interact with them through touch, smell, audible and visual senses more than a larger building project. CLeints have much different expectations.

4 of 56 Response Text 45 Interior Architecture is what building occupants touch and use everyday. It Feb 22, 2010 3:46 PM typically includes not only built elements, but also furnishings.

In our practice, we have gained specialized knowledge regarding space usage and long-term value of facilities.

Our needs are to have better financial security for what we do.

The biggest challenges we have are: 1. "free" services from commercial furniture dealers 2. "cut rate" services from tenant-planning firms. These devalue the entire value of thoughtful design. 3. one-sided owner-developed agreements

We aspire in our practice to provide true value for our clients: facilities that are pleasant to use, and have long-term value in operation and maintenance. 46 As renovation becomes a larger portion of our business due to economic Feb 22, 2010 3:46 PM constraints and continued redevelopment of our urban areas, it is important to have discussions focused on interior architecture. Interior architecture is creating space within the constraints of an existing structure. Green practices have led to more specialized skill sets including high performace systems (HVAC and ELEC) and reuse of materials that causes budget/enviromental/constructability issues. 47 information on and incorporating sustainable design Feb 22, 2010 3:46 PM 48 Interior Architecture is the design, documentation and construction of interior Feb 22, 2010 3:46 PM spaces by a liscensed architect. Specialized knowledge gained is the difference between actual built details vs. drawn details. Needs/challenges are trying to understand the use of BIM and how practical a tool like this is for Interior Architecture. Emerging trends would be the somewhat new study of workplace strategies and solutions and the use of BIM tools like Revit. Less respected than ground up due to the association with decorators 50 Interior architecture looks at the spatial and functional qualities of the interiors of Feb 22, 2010 3:46 PM buildings. As an architect, I try to design the interiors and exteriors of my projects as interrelated aspects of a whole. As I have gained more experience through my years of practice, I have become better at this. Keeping up with technological changes is a challenge. Sustainable design is the major design trend currently. I expect that this trend will continue indefinitely, as we become increasingly aware of our impact on our environment, and as resources become increasingly scarce. 51 the almalgamation of interior disciplines with the exterior envelope. Feb 22, 2010 3:46 PM 52 space, volumn, context, direction, feel and emotion is interior architecture. Feb 22, 2010 3:46 PM Specialized knowledge is sustainability. Needs are knowledge and application of sustainable products. Challenges are client education about sustainability. Principles are design sensitivity. Emerging trends include sustainability and lighting. Expectations include knowledge distribution from manufacturer's. Asperations are off the grid buildings with high design and emerging products. 53 Interior Architecture is modeling the space for occupant use. Green is definitely Feb 22, 2010 3:47 PM the trend. Challenge is convincing client that interior spce planning is importatn part of overall design of building. Not how much SF but how SF is used = success. 54 Interior Architecture is the design of spaces for the utilization, work and enjoyment Feb 22, 2010 3:47 PM of individuals. It is deeply personal since it is space that we touch (as opposed to space we look at). It requires a sensitivity to how people work, and how they interact with each other.

5 of 56 Response Text 55 That architecture within the shell. Feb 22, 2010 3:47 PM Knowledge of interior specific materials, sustainability of those materials, accessiblilty of the interior and costs involved with all of the above. I need access to materials and specs on the interned including large sample jpeg files for download for use in 3d renederings using the products. Emerging trends, at the momement, include smaller, more efficient retail spaces with less expensive finishes. My expectations and aspirations are to maintain a high of quality on a limited budget. 56 Interior architecture, simply put, encompasses design of interior spaces. Feb 22, 2010 3:47 PM Designing interior spaces requires an in depth understanding of how the space will be used so that the space is comfortable, practical and beautiful. When looking in depth at a space, the importance of details, textures and other smaller items becomes quite important for an effective design. The challenge is to cull out enough information from the client so that the space will properly respond to their needs. A common goal is to unify the various spaces of a project while also allowing for some variation among the spaces. Another common goal is to create as much usable space within the confines of the exterior shell. Ultimately, the end product should seem like it was always there and feel like a good fit for the user. 57 1. Architecture that starts from the inside out. Not just limited to the interior. Feb 22, 2010 3:48 PM 2. Clients and cost drive most of the projects. Meeting their needs quickly is the key to our successful projects. 3. Managing projects that move very quickly and have a lot of information occuring in many different parts. 4. Unfortunalty the answer I am seeing here is that there is a trend that architects, even more so interior architecture is a commodity. This is a very hard hurdle to overcome, even to battle the need or advantage in having an architect part of the process early. 5. Meet and educate clients along the way, and exceeding their expectations in the process. 58 Interior Architecture is everything except the design and detailing of the building Feb 22, 2010 3:48 PM facade (envelope). It can drive the drive the organization, size and orientation of a building. In my work, most structural considerations have been limited to supporting interior components (soffits, monumental stairs). 59 To me, interior architecture is the shaping of interior environments through Feb 22, 2010 3:48 PM physical means with the training and knowledge to know what can be designed or revised without any detriment to the health, safety and welfare of users. An interior architect has been trained to understand structures, HVAC and other elements that directly affect the comfort of a space. Although interior architecture can deal with applied finishes (FFE), the scope can go beyond this in creating 'architecture' on the 'interior'. 60 Interior Architecture is everything that occurs inside the building envelop and any Feb 22, 2010 3:49 PM views out. Through practice, I am developing an understand of people's impressions--what makes an impression, what is seldom noticed, what we (I.A. Professionals) often dismiss that makes a lasting impression. Needs and challenges, evidence based design information that validates or invalidates assumptions about color, material, wayfinding, etc. 61 Interior Architecture is the design of key interior spaces and conceptual Feb 22, 2010 3:49 PM coordination with the exterior design. As interior architects, we should lead the interior on the design team. I have worked on healthcare, K-12 and college and university projects - all of which have LEED goals 62 Our multi-school survey and analysis of architecture and intrior design Feb 22, 2010 3:49 PM professional education programs indicated that interiors (interior design and interior architecture) programs focused mored on space planning, light manipulation, ergonomics, human factors , design for aging and youth, health care outcomes assessments, disabilities, and textures and surfaces, and client relations; while architecture programs focus more on structures, larger planning issues, project delivery, and .

6 of 56 Response Text 63 Interior Architecture is the interior sheltered environment where humans spend Feb 22, 2010 3:50 PM most of their lives. Since furnishing come into play and are contracted much differently than building architecture I have found some disparity in contract communications. I have aspired in my practice to develop some consistency between the documentation of Interior and Building Architecture. 64 Interior architecture is a subset of architecture focusing on interior spaces and Feb 22, 2010 3:50 PM configurations. 65 Recent emphasis on surface of volumes and how these surfaces create legibility Feb 22, 2010 3:50 PM and hierachy. 66 Interior Architecture is just Architecture to me. We're responsible for the entire Feb 22, 2010 3:50 PM built environment. I see the phrase "Interior Architecture" as a defensive marketing response to the Interior Design Community.

Much of the interiors work done with my projects has been done by interior designers. We are increasingly staying involved with interiors and pushing our service as far as we can deliver competent service. I look for working models to assist me in expanding the opportunities to increase our involvement in interiors.

More of our projects are interior buildouts and expansions within an existing building shell. This becomes interior architecture. The downturn in the economy has opened this type of project and we are taking it and look for it to transform the type of service we offer and market. 67 I would like to see a more consistent or scheduled contact from the committee Feb 22, 2010 3:50 PM that helps with day to day activities. 68 The practice of architecture on the interior of a building of which color and material Feb 22, 2010 3:51 PM selection is a small (but highly visible part). 69 Interior architecture is the design of everything that occurs within the exterior shell Feb 22, 2010 3:51 PM of the building. It unites the practice of architecture with the practice of interior design. t requires a much more detailed understanding of the inner workings of many business types than the design of the shell. Architect's need to hav greater respect for he specalized knowledge that interior designers bring to the project team. 70 In my practice interior architecture is the process of shaping the environments that Feb 22, 2010 3:51 PM people work in and the facitlies that support their work. Obviously the same can be applied substituting description for other facility types. We've become specialists at understanding a cleints orgainztional structure, operations and aspirations. We are good at seeing how our work meshes with a users processes and theinking about their facilites,. Additionally, we understand the needs of our commercail cleints regarding lease space - how office buildigns function, how they lease, how they accomdate different tenants. Challenges - fnding staff that gets that its about the user not about their own design needs or ego issues. Need to develop flexibility into our thinking about buildings, spaces, electronic infrastructure - and not to simplify flexibility down to putitng wheels on furniture --- corporate facilites with an exit strategy, leased space that adapts to corporate changes (new ownership, different division, etc.). Expect that green building will be become business as usual - just how we do things. Hope that we can conticue to put out our message and survive in a middle market position with pressure down from large firms and corprate consolidations from clients and pressure up from samll orgainztions that can do what we do with no capital investment, no office, no location. 71 Architecture is a broad term that includes site design, Building Planning and Feb 22, 2010 3:51 PM interior and exterior design. Following this definition interior architecture is the facet of the architects practice which deals with interior environments and spaces. This includes the design of furniture and fixtures.

7 of 56 Response Text 72 Our firm is a general practicing firm so its a challlenge to keep up on information Feb 22, 2010 3:51 PM for different building types. Tried and true are inportant to the clients and an unfamiliar name has its work cut out to get clients to try. Quality for price and service are important in our office and clients are more willing to try if we can indorse. Bottom line many times is cost though. Bugets are always tight and clients are often willing to forgo new furnishings to complete the project. Finishes will also change quality to ensure a project within budget. Too trendy or too contemporary doesn't work in my area- clients often keep the same furnishing and finishes for 10,15 years plus and so nothing that gets dated to quickly. 73 For us, interior architecture runs the gamut between renovation and new Feb 22, 2010 3:51 PM construction and from the strictly functional, budget conscious to the highly refined, esoteric and yet functional. We feel that above all we must respond to the needs and demands of our client and yet still provide the highest standards of aesthetics and design. 74 Interior Architecture is the practice of interior renovation and new construction that Feb 22, 2010 3:52 PM requires knowledge of HSW unigue to architecture. 75 Interior Architecture is the design of interior space which includes all of the Feb 22, 2010 3:52 PM elements that define that space. Knowledge gained; much greater understanding of the relationships of people and space, function and space, interior construction practices, detailing of custom interior furniture, furnishings etc. good design is defined by people and space relationships, quality of material use, and quality of application and construction, appropriateness of functional, life safety issues. Expectations and aspirations; to make better spaces for people to spend their time since time is our most valuable resource. 76 All aspects of enclosed architecture not specifically tied to a building envelope. Feb 22, 2010 3:52 PM 77 That is not a simple question. You asked 5 questions with complex answers. Feb 22, 2010 3:52 PM Interior architecture is the design of architectural elements within an existing (or to be built) shell structure. Specialized knowledge includes lighting design, casework design, knowledge of finish materials, knowledge of furniture systems, specialized knowledge for the requirements of the aging, medical facilities, retail stores and entertainment venues. Needs: more information on costs, better information on lighting. Challenges: lack of respect for interior architecture in the profession, competition from designers and interior designers, overlap of our work with interior designers, changing codes, LEED related issues, etc etc. 78 Interior Architecture is interior design with an added architectural focus--on Feb 22, 2010 3:52 PM design, structure, mechanical, specific end user requirements, and facilities planning. We need people to understand what interior architecture is, and why it is important and necessary. I want to work at a firm that respects interior architecture and promotes it. 79 Interior Architecture deals with the actual function of the building, and with the Feb 22, 2010 3:52 PM users of the building. At it's most basic, it is space oriented and should relate primarily to how people experience the space. It is the area of practice most involved with building and accessibility codes, finish materials and color selections, mechanical and electrical systems. 80 It is time to make Interior design and Architecture one. It makes no sense that the Feb 22, 2010 3:53 PM AIA and IIDA are not one in the same. We should have our profession as one and save a huge amount of money. We need similar exposure and design excellance in the Interior profession as much as Architects.

8 of 56 Response Text 81 Interior Architecture is creating and shaping environments that inspire and Feb 22, 2010 3:53 PM comfort, invigorate and soothe. Specialized knowledge I've gained in the past 24 years is not all that special. Just as an architect who concentrates on the building envelope hones and specializes their skills to the budgetary, client, environmental and physical demands of the project, so an architect focusing on interiors gathers a specialized knowledge set related to their area of practice. I believe architects are among the last generalists - we need to know a vast amount of information about a dizzying array of things, and know it fully. I believe we cannot draw a clear cut line and say "this part of the project is out of my sphere of influence". This presents the challenge of being taken seriously by architects who feel the interior environment is 'fluff' and not a critical piece of the overall design. The building should present a unified whole. My needs are to be fully and seriously integrated into a project from the very initial phases, my challenges are convincing people (clients and colleagues) how essential early involvement and an is to the success of the project. Consistent principals and emerging trends defining the discipline are (at least in the Rocky Mountain West market right now) the inherent value of good design. Good design can help heal, it can increase productivity, it can raise a company's profile in the community. The trend to scale back everything and hunker down for economic chaos leads, in my mind, to decreased morale, productivity and a public image of stasis or even retraction/decline. My expectations are simple: to make the world a better place, to improve lives by making the built environment a source of delight and comfort. My aspirations? Right now, to stay employed and help my firm achieve greater success and profitability. My long term dream? To open my own one person design firm dedicated to giving my clients the individualized attention and time they deserve (and I'll probably go broke in the process!). 82 Interior Architecture is the integration of all aspects of the interior environment. Feb 22, 2010 3:54 PM 83 Interior Architecture is design of the interior environment including the experience Feb 22, 2010 3:54 PM of entering a space.

Some specialized knowledge I've gained is how to maximize daylight. How to use lighting to create mood and to differentiate space. How to use architecture, texture and lighting to enhance your experience of a place.

The challenges include tight budgets, mediocre existing building systems and time expectations

Emerging trends include enhanced speed of delivery, simpler designs and smaller more boutique type spaces

Expectations are to see growth in this industry with more focus on renovation and interiors since the cost of existing structures is now well below the cost of building new ones.

I love the Eames plywood!!! 84 The cordination and selection and detailing of the interiors. Clinets want to trust Feb 22, 2010 3:54 PM one source to complete this. Helping clients understand how we can help them. Be honest, clear and direct and show value. Continue making new realationships with vendors and suppliers that can execute my designs effectively and have great value. 85 Clients don't always value interior architecture(fit out ) and the profession Feb 22, 2010 3:55 PM undercuts each other, we are seeing rates froom 10 years ago, how can the AIA help promote? 86 Interior architecture, to me, is the shaping of interior space and all of its elements Feb 22, 2010 3:55 PM (furniture, color, volumes/forms, plantings, art, etc.) to the needs and enjoyment of the users. 87 INterior Architecture is the creation of spaces within a building's shell that Feb 22, 2010 3:55 PM supports people's activities.

9 of 56 Response Text 88 My expectation is to see interior architecture as an essential and truely integrated Feb 22, 2010 3:55 PM - knitting together interior architecture, branding, lighting design, mechanical and structural systems, and architecture into a seemless package - one in which you cannot tell where one ends and the other begins 89 Interior Architecture blends the diciplines of Architecture and Interior Design. It Feb 22, 2010 3:55 PM includes the functional planning and design of spaces with the aesthetic use of color, texture, furnishings and finishes. Designing to meet life safety codes and accessibility concerns and integrating sustainable materials and practices also are important aspects of Interior Architecture. While the life-cycle of many Interior Architecture projects is shorter than buildings - the process requires many of the same skills and knowledge. 90 Buildouts, specifying finishes, etc....I have become familiar with codes and Feb 22, 2010 3:56 PM product research. Challenges - Fabrics! LEED is the future, BIM and flexibility in practice (email, FTP sites, Skype for project delivery and meetings) I am awaiting my RA number and I hope to continue to do custom ...... 91 I have been a licensed architect and interior in my own practice for over Feb 22, 2010 3:56 PM 30 years now and want to make sure that I am staying current on all fronts. 92 Interior Architecture is the juncture between architecture and interior design. It Feb 22, 2010 3:56 PM incorporates spaces, finishes, architectural lighting and life safety, but stops short of FF&E. I have specialized in hospitality interior architecture for the last ten years. The specialized knowledge I have gained includes space planning and design trends. The biggest challenge to interior architects is encroaching scope creep from interior designers not trained or tested on life safety. Consistent principles include appropriateness tempered with innovation, a developed appreciation for trends and styles, and the ability to edit. Emerging trends include reductions in scale in response to the economy and rebranding. 93 I design buildings from the inside out. I am a licensed architect as well as an Feb 22, 2010 3:57 PM interior designer. The blend of the two enable me to design spaces that work for the client. 94 The design of interior spaces Feb 22, 2010 3:57 PM 95 Interior Architecture is still about place making. Specialized knowledge would Feb 22, 2010 3:57 PM include a more sophisticated client base focused on sustainability and affordability. Comfort, productivity and aesthetics remain a focus but continue to evolve. I believe new products and material resources / research will continue to drive new and emerging designs. 96 Interior architecture takes the building parameters and creates and sclupts a Feb 22, 2010 3:57 PM human space.

Most often we utilize this in commercial office buildings. 97 Buildouts, specifying finishes, etc....I have become familiar with codes and Feb 22, 2010 3:57 PM product research. Challenges - Fabrics! LEED is the future, BIM and flexibility in practice (email, FTP sites, Skype for project delivery and meetings) I am awaiting my RA number and I hope to continue to do custom retail design...... 98 I think that Interior Architecture is tied into the planning and programming for the Feb 22, 2010 3:58 PM functions that need to take place within the envelope of the exterior architecture.

10 of 56 Response Text 99 Interior Architecture involves the design and layout of facilities to promote the Feb 22, 2010 3:58 PM quality of life by providing safe, livable, functional, and accessible spaces. In my experience, I have gained color theory knowledge, knowledge for the requirements of human erganomics, knowledge of functionality of spaces, and product knowledge. My needs and challenges lie in helping everyone to understand how important Interior Architecture is in everyday life. Consistent principles in my field are that everyone needs structure. The way we live our lives needs to be functional, and we need to feel safe. Emerging trends I am glad to say is the use of more color. So many people don't think that color and texture are important, but with our minds processing so many forms of information through technology, we still need the colors and textures of the world to help stimulate our minds and give relief to the over stimulation of computers and such. My expectation and aspiration is to educate architects, contractors, and the public on the importance of Interior Architecture; especially because we spend so much of our lives in doors. 100 Interior Architecture is the creation of meaningful, inspirational, and useful spaces. Feb 22, 2010 3:58 PM Needs and challenges - the 'green' movement has inspired manufacturers with innovations in materials - keeping up with the rapid changes, along with understanding the benefits as well as potential drawbacks over time is a major concern. 101 Interior Architecture is more than the materials, finishes, and colors of the area Feb 22, 2010 3:58 PM within the exterior walls. It is the space, the light, the experience - and the interior connection to the outside world, that influences and embodies the spaces created for its inhabitants to work, play, learn, dream, and live within. 102 Interior architecture is the design of the usable space in buildings. I have Feb 22, 2010 3:59 PM specialized on research spaces and high-perfomance environments. My challenge is to identify special needs and requirements and to interpret these in designs. My expectations and aspirations are to assist with raising our professions general awareness of growing responsibilities for coordination and collaboration with design teams. 103 Space planning; working with telecom, electrical, A/V equipment. All that Feb 22, 2010 3:59 PM equipment generates heat-how to handle it. 104 Interior Architecture represents the continued excitement that a structure can Feb 22, 2010 3:59 PM express to its consumers. A consolidated view of exterior shell design, internal space planning and interior architecture will resonate the clients statement to the building users and to the community. The ability to adapt an interior solution over a span of years gives the design professional a sence of gratitude, excitement and a personal enjoyment of his profession. 105 Best practices are Key, however you need to understand the Client, listen to their Feb 22, 2010 3:59 PM needs and wants. 106 Interior Architecture is the application of architectural and commercial interior Feb 22, 2010 3:59 PM to enhance the design of both new and existing building envelopes. 107 The interiors of a building are its living, working, and healing places, where we Feb 22, 2010 4:00 PM spend most of our time. Our challenges are to stay at the forefront of an ever more innovative market where new products are brought to our business at an ever increasing pace and where our clients are more aware, educated, cost and environmentally conscious. Green, green, green. Interior Architecture should not be considered the step child of architecture, it is the places people spend most of their days. A building needs both the shell and core and interiors to be functional and aesthetically pleasing solutions. The AIA needs to embrace the interiors architects of our group more fully to harness the economic recovery in our profession. 108 Interior Architecture is the continuation of the practice of Architecture on the inside Feb 22, 2010 4:00 PM of the building envelope. The challenge is most often examples of interior architecture are shown in curtains and paint colors instead of materiality and volumes or experience.

11 of 56 Response Text 109 It seems that as the existing building stock in our country ages, the need for Feb 22, 2010 4:00 PM specialized knowledge related to interior architecture will significantly increase. The interior realm holds the most potential to provide sustained professional service demand...and is the greatest mystery for our existing professional membership. We need programs and information on interpersonal skills, specialized programming discussion and specific language that is appropriate. We also need to encourage architects to specialize in this arena. 110 Interior Architecture is the other side of the exterior wall. It is not a stage set inside Feb 22, 2010 4:00 PM a theater. We have alway believed that the visual language of the building should be the same throughout. 111 Architecture not including the shell. Feb 22, 2010 4:01 PM 112 Interior Architecture is the design and planning of micro-architecture: furniture, Feb 22, 2010 4:01 PM finishes, lighting, and building systems. Integrating building systems with each other and with the building occupants. Specialized knowledge: emerging LED lighting technologies. Principles/trends: sustainability. Expectations/aspirations: people-centered design. 113 Interior Architecture is about crafting solutions for people. People live inside Feb 22, 2010 4:02 PM buildings, not outside. Therefore, the fine art of understanding their specific needs and developing solutions to those requirements is the focus of the interior architect. It is a highly specialized aspect of architectural design that too few practitioners truly understand. Schools do not focus adequate attention to this practice area in their curricula, focusing most of their attention towards exterior . Architects, like myself, who specicialize in this practice area, learn through hands on experience. Some of the better interior design schools, such as The University of Cincinnati, are actually providing better training to their students than the architectural schools are. For most architects, interior planning and design becomes an afterthought, following whatever course they have set for the exterior design of the building. Buildings should truly be designed from the inside, out. As we are pressed into renovating more and more of our existing building inventory, the role of the interior architect will become more important. We, as a profession, need to provide the proper training so this work does not become a thoughtless effort by unknowing professionals. We need to do a MUCH better job of educating our fellow professionals as well as our students! 114 Interior Architecture is the design of form and finish of interior spaces and not Feb 22, 2010 4:02 PM simply decoration of existing spaces. I have gained specialized experience in sustainable design through my qualification as a LEED AP. Challenges included profitability, especially in this economy. Emerging and consistent trend is for energy efficiency and real cost savings. I expect to be respected and compensated adequately for my professional experience and ethics and aspire to continue to practice well after retirement age. 115 Interior Architecture is the creation and formation of environments within an Feb 22, 2010 4:03 PM exterior envelop that satisfies programmatic space planning and physical needs as well as aesthetic vision. It can incorporate all disciplines - architecture, art and design, engineering. The architect is the space shaper and choreographer of the project and must know when to enlist the aid of each discipline, no matter the scale of the project. Sustainability will be the watchword as it is for all involved with the built environment. 116 NO ANSWER Feb 22, 2010 4:03 PM 117 Interior Architecture is fundamentally architecture within buildings. Sometimes Feb 22, 2010 4:04 PM renovation, sometimes new construction. There is an increased emphasis on materiality at times. Color, texture, finish get more attention than "building architecture" does at times. The opportunities for designing "experiences" are closer at hand and more finely tuned. Interior projects are perceived closer up, in the micro, with more awareness of detail, texture, material, finish, etc.

12 of 56 Response Text 118 Interior Architecture is everthing other than the core and shell of a Feb 22, 2010 4:04 PM building.Specialized knowledge is complete command of the code,i.e. types of occupancy, fire separations, egress plus materials and furniture and integrating the MEP. Needs are to keep up with trends, knowing the differences between codes for different jurisdictions, having the latest samples so a finish scheme is not is not using discontinued products. Current priciples are transparency, view, better work environments. Essentially the LEED criteria for indoor environments, even if not going for certification, and flexibility. My expectations for the near term are very low even though I am in Washington and doing government contracts. I would like to aspire to doing rely good interiors projects without having to cut fees to the point that money is lost. Fortunately federal goverment goes by Brooks Act and must select based on qualifications. Virginia does the same. Maryland doed not do this. 119 I understand that "interior architecture" is as attempt to redefine and reclaim the Feb 22, 2010 4:04 PM architect's role in the minds of our clients and the public. However, great architecture has always been about the space created and how it defines human endeavor. Not by the curbside "Kodak" moment that has become the "fifteen minutes" of most projects. By narrowly defining "interiors" we may be doing ourselves an injustice.

We need to show that an architect brings more to the table than fabric and finishes. A success story should be greater than the sum of it's parts. Even if the architect is not involved in the original shell, the insight it takes to integrate a design, meet client expectations and create something beautiful or wonderous, is the essence of architecture. 120 Interior Architecture? Feb 22, 2010 4:04 PM Blending materials and colors to create a desired atmosphere the client is looking for. 121 Aspirations: Information on how others have solved interior architecture Feb 22, 2010 4:06 PM challenges. 122 I believe the interior of the building and exterior should blend seamlessly. Often Feb 22, 2010 4:06 PM Interiors is thought of separately and they look like they don't belong together. My work has been mostly in healthcare and higher education. As with all things - need to stay ahead of the market - bringing fresh new ideas that are realistic and workable. There seems to be a melding of types of interior design - residential/hospitality seems to have become a prevalent direction for all architectural types. Again - I want my architectural interior and exterior to blend seamlessly and be fresh but not over trendy. 123 Interior Architecture is the design of space for people to live and work. Building Feb 22, 2010 4:06 PM and accessibilty codes are essential to developing any scheme. This has been part of the challange in my 37 years of professional practice. Designing funtional space with the gifts of creativity and comfort has always in the past and will in the future continue to be the constant challange of meeting people's needs. 124 I have work for an Interior Construction Contractor for 10 years. I would like to Feb 22, 2010 4:06 PM gain more knowledge on emerging trends and products. 125 Interior Architecture is the fit-out and finishing of spaces within a building Feb 22, 2010 4:06 PM envelope. Specialized knowledge involves MEP coordination, dimming and lighting/window treatment controls, knowledge of available furniture fixtures and fittings, green products, behavior of fabrics and other finishes under various conditions. Needs and challenges involve keeping up with new products and maintaining a sample library. Trends that are consistent are higher demands for integration of technology and green systems. Expect and aspire to create an end product that is aesthetically appealing notwithstanding the integration of technology and green elements.

13 of 56 Response Text 126 Interior Architecture is the integration of architectural design, documentation and Feb 22, 2010 4:06 PM execution coordinated with interior design. In other words, the interior architect operates beyond the finished surfaces towards the exterior of the building, the interior designer only operates the finished surfaces. I have gained award winning experience with two of the firms in the world. The main challenge is to be understood by the shell and core architects with lesser experience and knowledge of what an interior architect can do. I aspire to be understood and to be a successful and esteemed architect in my community and nationally. 127 I think of Interior Architecture - distinct from decorating - as a discipline with a Feb 22, 2010 4:07 PM generative, formal logic that guides the design. My experience with Interior Architecture has made me more aware of lighting, tactile aspects of design, and materiality. It also has required me to coordinate and integrate systems more deftly - they have a greater visual impact on the interior environment. As a result, I need up-to-date information regarding lighting, MEP systems, etc. I think architects are uniquely qualified to create meaningful interior environments - we are trained to think holistically and spatially. 128 Interior architecture requires a thorough understanding of the codes and criteria Feb 22, 2010 4:07 PM relative to the type of facility the work is doing. it is much more than interior design (color, materials and furniture) while those are important elements it goes much deeper than that. Specializing via certifactions and education in the type of facility is important to define the architect as an expert in that type of facility to insure that the client gets the right product. 129 -- Feb 22, 2010 4:07 PM 130 Interior Architecture (as opposed to Interior Design) seeks to apply the same level Feb 22, 2010 4:07 PM of technical skill and comprehensive approach utilized in building design to the interior spaces within, encompassing more than the selection of finishes and furnishings. Architects who practice in this area need to develop an expertise in the selection and specification of finishes and furnishings, of course. More importantly, they need to recognize the difference in perception of the interior environment versus that of singular or groups of buildings and design these proximate spaces accordingly. The very best results are achieved when the same team of individuals plans both the building and the interiors, so that a seamless relationship between interior and exterior spaces is achieved. In this regard, the same principles and emerging trends apply to both disciplines. The functionality and effectiveness of our interior environments can only be improved by the greater involvement of architects and their unique skill set. 131 Interior Architecture is the key to the intimate experience of the Architecture. The Feb 22, 2010 4:08 PM exterior is the Overture the Interior is the Symphony. After working for an Interiors firm for 13 plus years I have found that some of the complaints the Interiors folks had about Architects are true. Give an Architect an opportunity to do Interiors and he will bury it in design and budget. Having qualified people do the interiors work is essential to a successful project for the Architect as well as the client. This in my mind is the single challege we face in and Architectural office when it comes to Interiors. Interior are so volatile when it comes to emerging trends, everyone wants to be on the edge. The Green movement has become very important and will continue to be so. Accessibility has now been a requirement for 16 years yet everyone is still trying to dodge the requirement. It would be nice to see the rest of the design/construction community accept this fact and start making products that are more condusive to accessibile design. For expample appliances that will fit under a 34" high counter. With BIM quickly becoming the wave of the future, support for design elements from manufacturers would be of great benefit to creating designs with support of the actual products specified in a project. I would expect the BIM systems to change the face of the profession and how we produce our designs for years to come.

14 of 56 Response Text 132 Interior Architecture is a balancing act between respecting the exisiting exterior Feb 22, 2010 4:09 PM architecture and public spaces and providing interiors which are responsive to clients/tenants needs and profiles while creating an envoronment that stimulates, educates and nourishes the individual. As far as specialized knowledge, my background has provided my with a very broad brush of expertise that continues to morph from year to year as climate change and sustainability issues begin to take precidence in what we do. Our challenge is to find the right GREEN solution for the right project and location that will also be an economical and aesthetic resolve to the project's requirments. Integrated delivery is an emerging trend that requires real partnering amongst the project Team. My expectations are for new sustainable technologies that will be affordable for all clients, both residential and commercial. 133 Besides my bachelor degree in architecture I obtained my masters in Interior Feb 22, 2010 4:09 PM Architecture since I believe these two disciplines complement each other very well. Interior Architecture is the design of interior spaces which includes space planning, material selection, lighting design, among others. Currently there is a very big overlap between the architect's duties and the interior architect/ designer duties. I don't think the profession of Interior Arch. is very defined because it is often confused with Interior decoration. 134 I think Interior Architecture is the direct link between the user and architecture, is Feb 22, 2010 4:09 PM the everyday discipline that an individual is in contact to. In Interior Architecture, form and functionality are the final palpable result of a creative process and is critical for the relationship user-space. 135 Interior Architecture provides an environment that enables/facilitates the Feb 22, 2010 4:10 PM functioning of the space in an ambience that is uplifting. The profession requires specailized knowledge of the function of the space and the ability to incorporate the best in sustainable practices. While the eagerness to embrace new construction technologies, components and materials is desirable, we are at times cornered by the lack of interchangeability of components and of confidence in new products for want of a reliable standardization seal of authority. 136 Interior spaces in archtiecture: to meet a functional need. AIA Carereers needs Feb 22, 2010 4:10 PM to add the list of "Interior ARchtecture" whichis missing in their list. Also, the professions need to start working the the government agencies (US Congress, etc) to start phasing out of teh word "Achitecture" and its derivatives from the announcements made by the non-building fields, like IT and computers, which are misusing the words and are everywhre in their adds, adding to confusion and annoyance. 137 Interior Architecture is the practice od creating space w/in the shell of the Feb 22, 2010 4:11 PM building's structural system. Interior Architecture is not the mere application of color or texture to existing walls, but it has meaning and impact in the same way that building architecture has. One particular challenge is competing for work with space planners, interior designers, and interior decorators. Often the general public does not understand or distinguish the difference and we must work to educate our clients about the importance an Architect can play in their project. Consistent principles include defining the relationship between the exterior & interior environment & defining the relationship between form & function. Most recently, we have found our clients are much more receptive and they often approach us first about their interest in sustainable design. We often do our projects completely, without the interior package being performed by an iterior designer seperate from our own services. I aspire to create environments w/ our building architecture that are complemented by the experience of the interior architecture. 138 I am young in my career, and recognize if I were to start a firm the projects that Feb 22, 2010 4:11 PM will be most realistic will be Tenant Improvement work, so I would like to know about this process, and people are finding quality projects in this category. I am familiar with work of firms like Super Potato, and enjoy the idea that T.I. Work can still be quality architectural space.

15 of 56 Response Text 139 Focus on the function of the space within the envelope and its fitness to forward Feb 22, 2010 4:11 PM the goals, objectives, and vision of the stakeholders. Includes Ergonomics, Workplace Strategies, Programming, aesthetics, and other processes that combine to go beyond meeting basic codes and standards. 140 We specialize in renovation of a variety of building types, so Interior Architecture Feb 22, 2010 4:11 PM often means blending the new with the existing in terms of space and materials. We are constsantly looking for easy to access information on standards, (such as health care design), and material reccommendations, but they seem to be hard to find online. The AIA website should be a clearinghouse for this type of information. 141 Iwould like to see a more integrated approach between the exterior design of Feb 22, 2010 4:11 PM buildings and how the program worksn that isn interior design. 142 The design inside the building. Feb 22, 2010 4:12 PM Keep the concept easy to articulate, like a mantra, so as issues come up the design concept is repeated and completed. 143 I have seen an increased need for Interior Architecture. and Feb 22, 2010 4:12 PM individuals have to improve their current spaces out of necessity for multiple reasons such as; They need to rent vacant spaces which need to look great to potential renters, Owners find it more affordable to improve their current space because they will not make money selling... 144 I see Interior Architecture as an aspect of the practice of Architecture- not to be Feb 22, 2010 4:12 PM confused with interior design it can emcompass space layouts, and be under all aspects of building safety rules and regulations. I have chosen to specialize in this type of work primarily in the commercial realm and find that there are an extensive number of firms focused on this, especially in NYC. I think it is a great and growing field. 145 Design that understand the importance of holistic, cohesive relationship of the Feb 22, 2010 4:14 PM interior and exterior of a building. Its not decorating as in applying surfaces. Its continuing the architectural design through the interior details. We need to be involved throughout the process and not just at the end. 146 More consistent and reliable information on "green" products. More quanitiable Feb 22, 2010 4:14 PM information on the cost benefits of interior design to business, institutions and public facilities. What is the future of the profession? 147 Interior architecture should reflect and consider on a smaller unit - the individual Feb 22, 2010 4:14 PM user and how they together with their organization/firm/company or residency can occupy a space that supports them. You can have the greatest core and shell but if the ease at which the occupants are supported by the interior buildout is not addressed you have a non or ill functioning interior. 148 I am currently unemplyed or retired. Feb 22, 2010 4:14 PM 149 It is a branch of architectural practice that concentrates in the interior elements Feb 22, 2010 4:14 PM that build, and describe the space. 150 I like to get more information on green-recycables materials Feb 22, 2010 4:14 PM 151 Anything that helps or hinders the use and functions required for the successful Feb 22, 2010 4:14 PM use of the interior of any atructure.needed 152 Interior Architecture is everything except site planning and water-proofing. Feb 22, 2010 4:15 PM 153 Interior Architecture takes place within an existing stucture - either an existing Feb 22, 2010 4:18 PM building or a spec open shell building. Interior Architecture involves all the components of Architecture with the exception of the exterior skin. 154 The same as Architecture, with extended knowledge Feb 22, 2010 4:18 PM of FF&E 155 I enjoy interior architecture and spent the first several years of my career and Feb 22, 2010 4:19 PM internship doing interiors. Space planning, design, and texture, functionality, useablity, all contribute and are comprehendable by the end user. Many people can relate and are very engaged in this aspect of architecture and creating an engaging dialogue.

16 of 56 Response Text 156 Interior architecture is the design, space-making, form-giving, image-aesthetic of Feb 22, 2010 4:19 PM the interior of a structure or space. it includes form, shape, volume, proportion, scale as well as details/furniture/material and colors. It includes lighting design and integration of all other disciplines in the space such as mechanical, structural components. Ideally, It should be aestetically complementary to /cohesive with the architectural aesthetic and the conceptual development of the entire building and it should be integrated with the architecture of the building. Good interior architecture has the power to create emotion, drama, calmness or energy within a space, and sometimes can create its own energy...separate from other spaces in a building (as in a particular restaurant space within a large hotel). As in all architectural design, Interior architecture is driven by program, budget, context, and marketplace/customer needs. Trends come and go, but good Interior Architecture endures as all good design endures. Spatial and architectural expression of an idea or a strong concept is common in all good interior architectural design. Contrast between "simple" background and exciting design features can add drama and focus to a space. Simple plans, intuitive flow, clear separations of functions are components of good interior architecture. Interior architecture is a specialty, but should be a critical component of good architecture and should be part of an integrated design approach for every project. 157 Interior Architecture is understanding the needs of the space inside the box. Feb 22, 2010 4:19 PM Specialized knowledge in , accessibility for the chaning needs for the greater population that will be inhabiting the interior in the near future. 158 As design/build architects in NYC we belive that interior architecture is the Feb 22, 2010 4:19 PM complete facility delivered to the client that meets all programatic requirements. Our work begins with a logical plan finished according to the demands of client and industry. In addtion to having all planning and design skills, our firm includes a code consultant, contractors, furniture and data/phone techs. We are constantly challanged keep up with material inovation to meet cost demands while being sensitive to environmental concerns and deliver . 159 Interior architecture is the realm where whole building design is articulated and Feb 22, 2010 4:20 PM finalized. It must be both an extension of the building envelope and a celebration of form and space. Interiors are a vital extension of excellent architectural designs. 160 Interior architecture is, at its best, reawakening and animating the senses in Feb 22, 2010 4:20 PM service of a strong, clear idea. 161 I think traditionally "interior architecture" was defined as corporate space planning. Feb 22, 2010 4:22 PM As an Architect who does Interior Design as well, I like to consider Interior Architecture as more of an integration of the two, so the parti and principles applied to the Architecture are carried through the Interior Design, right down to the smallest details. This is not a new concept... think how many famous Architects have also designed furniture, light fixtures, and even place settings for their projects?! Charles & Ray Eames and their Plywood Lounge Chair demonstrate the true meaning of Interior Architecture! 162 Interior architecture deals with the environment within the exterior walls of a Feb 22, 2010 4:22 PM structure. It concentrates on the inner liveable space and studies the needs of the user from that perspective. Interior Architecture is different from Interior Design. It goes beyond finishes to incorporate the 'feel and flow' of the space to the user, the function of the space and the configuration of the space. 163 I would love an online database / library of tools (particularly covering the best Feb 22, 2010 4:22 PM practices and process tools). I'm a sole practictioner / generalists and my practice only touches upon what I consider "pure" interior architecture, but as I am in a smaller market there aren't many other options for specialists (both due to project budgets and availability of the specialist).

17 of 56 Response Text 164 Interior architecture is the design of the inhabitable spaces that architecture Feb 22, 2010 4:24 PM creates. It is concerned with the human experience of space; the sensorial as well as the etherereal qualities of spaces. Through interior architecture I have learned to develop my understanding of the effect of spatial form, color, textures, furniture and light to enhance the quality of a space. The needs I have are to constantly be on top of what the client needs while at thensame time pushing the envelope. 165 Needs and Challenges: Feb 22, 2010 4:24 PM

Finding qualified staff with hospitality experience for team organization in delivery of services to client. Given the state of our industry and our economy, this is becoming increasingly difficullt in that clients expectations are now centered on huge discounts to fees from earlier levels due to increased competition. We have found that we cannot always cover basic costs of running a business and providing a competent team for the Project in the pursuit of some jobs given this expectation. 166 Interior Achitecture is the design of interior environments. Understanding lighting, Feb 22, 2010 4:24 PM finishes, and thermal comfort are key to successful spaces. 167 Interior architecture in my mind is as important as the shell or exterior of the Feb 22, 2010 4:24 PM building. What a person sees from the outside, the inside of the architecture will have a lasting impression of their experience and thus requires design and thought. Specifically, I work in food retail environments which requires significant coordination with refrigeration, mechanical and electrical to ensure all systems are running together yet the design of the interior: the look, the feel, the experience is the challenge to keep at the same level and not minimized. 168 The constant challenges are maintaining a holistic design approach from the Feb 22, 2010 4:25 PM varying scales in design- from exterior to interior, all the way to the intimate scale of human interaction- while fulfilling the demands of schedule and budget. 169 Interior Architecture encompasses every aspect of any space within a built Feb 22, 2010 4:25 PM structure. 170 Refined Design of Interior spaces. Feb 22, 2010 4:25 PM 171 I have always appreciated a design where interior architecture and the exterior Feb 22, 2010 4:27 PM merge to complement each other. This happens only when the designers and the architects work closely with a client to approach design issues and opportunities collaboratively. Interior architecture, to me, is derived from a thoughtful discussion between design entities and many, many mental notes. 172 Interior Architecture is the thoughtful integration of the interiors space as part of Feb 22, 2010 4:27 PM the overall design of a space, i.e. it is not an afterthought that occurs after a facility has already been designed. My practice is over 95% interiors and I have found that many Architects are only interested in the sculptural quality of their building, not the functionality. My goal is to educate our profession on the investment aspect of what we create so that along with being sensitive to "green design" we are also sensitive to how space is used. 173 Interior architecture ranges from simple renovations to complete build out in a raw Feb 22, 2010 4:27 PM shell. Projects can be simple office interiors to complex techical spaces. As a for a world leader in Interior Archtecture, I have learned through experience how to provide the best level of service to my clients, becoming their "trusted advisor." We continue to be asked to provide our services for lower fees. Professional educaition and project delivery tools have not kept pace with this need.

18 of 56 Response Text 174 Interior Architecture is architectural features of a space and how the space is Feb 22, 2010 4:28 PM sculptured inside. The coordination of systems and incorporation off systems in the architecture sothat it looks like it is built just to accomodate HVAC nad is not an afterthought. I have learned that architecture or inetrior architecture, you start with codes before you shape your space and understand the systems than you listen to your client and fit all the component in a puzzle. My expectations are inetrior designers to be more educated and technically trained sothat their specialty is not finishas and they cal all teh space in 3 dimensions. 175 Shaping the interior environment- more than the finished product. The interior Feb 22, 2010 4:28 PM architecture contributes to intangible quality of the space. 176 Interior Architecture is the thing that makes the inhabitants to live healthy, safety Feb 22, 2010 4:28 PM wealthy in the present and the future. 177 Interiors are what we occupy the vast majority of the time. Thus having a holistic Feb 22, 2010 4:28 PM approach to creating an invirnment actually should emerge from the inside out and not vice versa. Media and the profession usually look at the 'glamour' shots from the outside. That's only skin deep. Textures, patterns, colors, levels of privacy & engagement, interfacing and overlapping forms, lighting - natural & artifical, views, etc. all contribute to an overall experience that is either stimulating/invigorating or simply not. You said this was any easy question - yeah right!?

The needs and challenges are the educating the public and staff at times that interior architecture evolves from within and is not simply applied materials and colors. Desecration it is not. The principles that define our discipline is listening and allowing the solution to blossom. Trends are just that - trends. The expectation at our office is that we'll create/provide an environment that is bought into by all because it was waht was said, heard, emerged, questioned and thought all the through the detailing stage to reinfoce what was heard. In other words, high aspirations. 178 Interior architecture is the spatial structure composed of objects defined by Feb 22, 2010 4:30 PM shape, materials and texture in both natural and artiticial light. Interior architecture is heightened further by the experiences of the senses by sight, touch, sound and even smell. 179 - Interior Architecture to us is what we design on the inside for those using the Feb 22, 2010 4:30 PM building. Whether its physical space, circulation, finishes, furniture and furniture layouts, lighting and decorative items. - My practice has taught me that good interior architecture is not accomplished easily and that it all starts with listening. A very difficult thing for most of us with many great ideas to do.

- Needs: more work, ha. But this type of forum of exchanging ideas would be ideal.

- The emerging trends continue to be similar all the time. 180 interior design. Feb 22, 2010 4:30 PM 181 I perceive "interior architecture" not as a separate discipline, but as a specialty. Feb 22, 2010 4:30 PM Everything I do when designing a full structure, I employ when doing interior-only work.

19 of 56 Response Text 182 Interior Architecture, in our office, is the natural completion of a new construction Feb 22, 2010 4:30 PM project, and the usual interior renovations (or "vanilla shell" space planning in new buildings not designed by us) of existing spaces. Needs & Challenges: We strive to steer our projects towards sustainability. We need: LOCAL, comprehensive directories and specifications of what is being MANUFACTURED locally, and within 500 miles for LEED projects. It is very difficult to ferrett out this information (yellow pages? Trade publications?, Internet searches?) We should NOT be leaving this up to the GC. Also- is frequently a big part of Interior Architecture. Who, locally, is doing selective demo/ salvage/ recycling? Who locally re-sells recycled items gleaned from interior renovation projects? 183 Interior architecture must be consistent with the overall architecture of the space. Feb 22, 2010 4:31 PM We specialize in high end residential projects, and provide very detailed interior elevations at all critical walls containing windows, doors, opening, and cabinets. There must be an integration with lighting as well. We must strive to coordinate all design aspects throughout the project, and create space that have an inherently consistent design. 184 The specialized knowledge that i have gained in Interior Architecture relates to Feb 22, 2010 4:32 PM internal office productivity: how to get at team to do the minimum amount of work on an interiors project, meet the contract requirements, produce good quality work and still make a profit. 185 Interior architecture consists of everything inside of the shell and core space, the Feb 22, 2010 4:32 PM tenant space. I've gained more knowledge on the users interaction with the space, the connection to humans. We are more attentive to indoor air quality, lighting, and sounds because we deal with the inside space. Working with architects who don't understand the role of interior architects is a challenge at times. There is a lot of grey space between the interior and exterior parts and people seem to have assumptions on how much the interior architect should know about the core functional aspects of the building such as plumbing, electrical, and structural parts. I am looking for a more clear definition of how the two fields, interior design and architecture should work together and how to better understand the roles of both sides. 186 1. Interior architecture is the design of the spaces we use for all the activities of Feb 22, 2010 4:33 PM daily life. 2. I have gained the following specialized knowledge: how and from where does sunlight enter the space, impact of solar orientation, appropriatness of finishes for various application, impact of lighting, impact of color, how building systems impact the level of human comfort, how to connect the inside with the outside, visitability and accessibility for persons with disabilities. 3. The bigest challenge is that most buildings are designed from the outside in - that is the shell is designed first and the interiors must be fit into that shell. The interior spaces must be thought out and designed along with the exterior of the building. 4. Principles and emerging trends: we've got to get beyond/expand on the system furniture workstation environment in office design, daylight is important, energy efficiency, use of sustainable materials, early involvement in the design process. 5. I expect our profession to get better at integrating interior design with the overall buillding design, and I hope to continue to design spaces that human beings enjoy using. 187 Interior Architecture is the design of any/all interior spaces in buildings, be they Feb 22, 2010 4:34 PM part of an overall building design or an interior renovation. I approach it as I do all aspects of design, and see it as an intrinsic part of architecture.

To that end, I want to know what tools/materials/techniques can further the design of interior spaces, and would benefit from seeing both innovation and best practice.

Seeing how deisgners use tools such as BIM or otehr 3D would also be of benefit.

It takes the design information I gained from my Interior Design side and the technical information I gained from my Architecture side. My challenges are that I always get put in a specific slot when I work for a firm - I'm either an Interior Designer or I'm an Architect - IE most firms don't recognize that they can be one and the same. This is actually why I work on the owner's side in the hospitality industry. 190 It is the design of the inside of the buildng or structure that does not require health Feb 22, 2010 4:35 PM and safety design. The biggest challenge is separating the Interior Architect from the Interior "Decorator". In peoples minds they are one in the same. Licensing Interior "Designers" as a sub category of the Architects would give Interior Designers and Interior Architet's more credibility and separate them from "decorators". An emerging trend is that Interior Architecture is finally recognized as a valid major and architectural profession. My expectations and aspirations are that Architects and Interior Architects collaborate more often on projects, as both diciplines are necessary for a successful project. I see too many rooms & spaces drawn by architects who have no sense of furniture scale and consequently the rooms cannot be furnished properly as they have been laid out with doll furniture.

We do a lot of restaurant design, there are a lot of technical, code and permit issues associated with this type of work, a lot more than space planning and finishes. What we do requires the training, experience and skills that a licensed professional has, but we often see lacking in an unlicensed Interior Designer. So from our perspective similar skills and experience as we use on buildings is required for our interiors projects. We have never considered ourselves anything but Architects, the issues around a complicated interior are similar to those found on more complex projects. I am interested in practice issues- contracts, project admin, fee structures, etc. 202 Interiro architecture is the defining of space through three-dimensional planning Feb 22, 2010 4:43 PM and detailing. 203 Be kept up-to-date with the newest products and trends. 22 of 56 Response Text 208 For our firm, Interior Architecture is 99% of our focus. It entails all the common Feb 22, 2010 4:44 PM phases of architectural services and embraces a few new ones and focuses on the interior of an existing building structure. It does not totally exclude the exterior fabric, but generally does. We have chosen to do exterior work only for those clients who have dependable payment records. Because we often have to perform site parking evaluation and utililty upgrades, even these phases are often part of the package for any overall building TI or change of use upgrade. The standard services receive a special emphasis in space planning where that drives the sale of the design for the brokers and building owners we work with. Knowledge of construction and overall planning methodogy enable us to conserve as much of the architectural elements and features as possible. This is key to costs for the clients. An absolutely thorough knowledge of code is required in IBC, ICC/ANSI, Energy, and Fire as well as local planning jurisdictional requirements. This is because we work on 250-300 distinct projects a year and several hundred "small" marketing, sf, Boma sf, building measurementse, etc. Our needs and challenges are to continue to provide consistant, efficent, and promt services. The needs of our clients are always YESTERDAY and they must be served accordinly. The are driven by their bottom line. The other challenges include inconsistent code interpretation, building owner's and manager's budgets and they preclude the use of green materials, and unexpected and unanticipated energy upgrade requirements in existing facilities of which 95% is where we work. Our expectations and aspirations are to provide the best possible design services for our clients and their tenants that meets the needs of the program and budgets in an efficient and timely manner. We work in all areas of commercial design exlcuding residential. 209 Interior Architecture incorporates and compliments the true Architectural spirit of Feb 22, 2010 4:46 PM the project. The proper scale, furniture layout, window/door placement, cabinetry layout and design working off the site layout incorporating all of the natural beauty of the property, (sunrise/sunset), prevailing breezes, and vistas, then incorporating the ceiling design and layout, lighting design, electrical/switching and textures, colors and finishes all in harmony with the site and Architectural vocabulary. I personally believe it is all in one and great architecture is one with great interior architecture. 210 Interior architecture addresses the full spectrum of the experience in an Feb 22, 2010 4:46 PM environment; it goes beyond the shape, texture and details of the envelope and includes the supportive 3-dimensional organization that occurs within. The organizational planning of the interior spaces includes everything from good space planning, lighting, acoustics, material selections, and appropriate furniture selections. The most challenging part has been from a business perspective; helping clients understand the distinction between straight architectural/interior design services, and the value and project integrity that comes from a single source that can provide comprehensive design services from a single source. 211 Interior architecture is the discipline devoted to thoughtfully, meaningfully, and Feb 22, 2010 4:47 PM effectively crafting the interface - the mode of interaction - between the human and the built environment.

I have gained a wealth of workplace design knowledge from my practice. I am challenged by a lack of creativity and inventiveness on the part of the client.

The trend towards green and healthy environments is starting to become a defining criteria. This however, is often kept at a superficial level, related mainly to choosing low VOC paint, non-offgassing carpets, and more efficient light fixtures, rather than addressing larger questions of how, where, why and when to build.

Redefine the landscape of interior architecture and architecture in general.

23 of 56 Response Text 212 as a specialty firm focused on senior design, interior architecture has a much Feb 22, 2010 4:48 PM bigger impact on our building users than exterior architecture. typically in seniors projects, the exterior needs to blend with the surrounding environment and look residential and familiar - there isn't a lot of room for signature exterior architecture on most projects. the psychology of interior architecture is fundamental to understand. I would like to see more information on research based design when it comes to seniors design and interior architecture. 213 Interior Architecture is defining spaces within an existing building framework in Feb 22, 2010 4:48 PM responding to needs and changes and looking for a new relationship to the exterior. 214 Interior architecture focuses on solving the spacial needs of the client to a more Feb 22, 2010 4:50 PM detailed level than traditional architecture. It has to satisfy spacial relationships but also satisfy the aesthtic needs as well. It is not just white walls, gray carpet and Knoll furniture. It must respond to the client. Provide an efficient environment design to satisfy the needs and desires of the occupant. 215 Interior architecture, while it does include such disciplines as space planning, Feb 22, 2010 4:51 PM furniture selection, millwork design and other technical aspects, needs to be concerned with perception - how does someone "see" the space; visual stimulation - how does the space impact a person's senses; how the design suits the fintended function; sustainability; budget; and challenge (for the designer). 216 We need a way to educate our clients on the benefits of good design. Too often I Feb 22, 2010 4:52 PM am confronted by owner's representatives that have been hired to manage projects and their only intent is to decrease short term costs, i.e lower design fees, mostly eliminate MEP involvement and minimize construction costs. They do not have an enlightened approach to implementing design principles that can produce long term cost savings. 217 I have a particular interest in creating and improving wellness in healthcare Feb 22, 2010 4:53 PM facilities and in using evidence based design and metrics to convince my clients of the need to consider this during each of my projects 218 Interior Architecture constitutes the design of a building's interior. I have gained Feb 22, 2010 4:54 PM expertise in airport interiors as well as restaurant and retail interiors. Specialized knowlege of some building types are required to successfuly design a buildings interior. It is the place where interior designers and architects should work in full collaboration. I have had my most rewarding experiences collaborating with interior designers on complex interior architecture projects. When this kind of collaboration does not occur the project suffers. 219 biggest challenge is meldiong our profession with the ID profession to provide a Feb 22, 2010 4:56 PM more seamless service to our clients. 220 Essentially, it is the practice of architecture, with emphasis on interiors. There are Feb 22, 2010 4:56 PM too many aspects of architecture to know "everything" about all. I feel that it is important to do one aspect well instead of trying to do it all. I am the "expert" on a project with respect to anything inside the building. I have specific knowledge of interior finishes, furniture, details of cabinetry...there are manythings to keep up with. The other architects that I work with don't need to keep up with those items if I do my job.

I work closely with the project architect and offer advise on space planning, finishes and take care of specifications and bidding process for interior elements. I love what I do and feel that my knowledge gives the client a better building. 221 Interior Architecture is creating spacial environments to meet the needs of your Feb 22, 2010 4:56 PM client. The spaces need to be functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. Materials and colors need to be skillfully coordinated. 222 Need a CLEAR legal definition between architecture, design and decorating. May Feb 22, 2010 4:58 PM vary by State, but we find various unlicensed and unqualified persons and businesses (including medical equipment salespersons) providing services that architects should be providing.

24 of 56 Response Text 223 Interior Architecture is critical to the final look and feel of a building or space. In Feb 22, 2010 4:59 PM my practice, I am looking for ways to make multi-family and senior spaces seem more in scale and feel to home. Challenges are building the relationship and cross-discipline practice between architects and interior designers to build knowledge for both and create better projects. 224 Interior Architecture to us is the creation of integrated interiors with the Feb 22, 2010 4:59 PM architecture and systems to service the users with functional, environmental and spatial experience.

Knowledge I gained in my practice that is special to me are human behavior and client interface.

Needs and Challenges: The upkeep of the best practice, latest trends, technology and innovations are musts.

Principles and trends: The continuous drive to be creative and innovative..... which are linked to our needs and challenges. Environmental practices is critical.

Our aspirations for our small practice is to make a difference by rendering excellence in our service and design. 225 Interior Architecture is the practice of space planning, with foci on the user Feb 22, 2010 5:00 PM experience and the protection of the health/safety/welfare of the users. 226 In my practice, I try to consider architecture (both interior and exterior) as one Feb 22, 2010 5:00 PM thing. The work that we do attempts to use the same language and often the same materials within as we apply without. When successful, the broad design gestures that we make with the building design and composition translate with clarity into the interior spaces. Realizing that interior spaces often need to meet a wider variety of functions, we often find opportunity to expand our language at various locations on the interior through additional detailing and variations on materials as well as through the use of lighting, furniture placement and vistas to art and the exterior. We strive to simplify our palettes such that the rigorous design decisions we make are legible to all who experience the spaces we inhabit. 227 Interior Architecture is the inegration of space planning, interior design and Feb 22, 2010 5:04 PM detailing that completes the whole design for the interior building. It requires total cooridination with all consulting displicines. 3D presentations have become a standard to convey the design to the clients. keeping up with the latest CAD technology is critical in moving forward. 228 Interior Architecture is based on perspective. I really do not distinguish between Feb 22, 2010 5:05 PM interior and exterior, but my perspective always begins on the interior. Knowledge of systems, materials, codes, and process are a must for a successful interior project. It is always a challenge to grasp new technology in materials, particularly in regards to Sustainability and longevity. Constantly we are balancing design with speed to market trends. My desire is to create a productive and experiential environment for my clients. 229 Interior architecture is the overall design of the insides of buildings, to Feb 22, 2010 5:05 PM accommodate the users. What will help me most are case studies and ongoing information about current and future trends for interior space, incorporating everything from technology to materials and organization. 230 Interior Architecture is designing interior of buildings to achieve design needs, Feb 22, 2010 5:07 PM beauty and comfort, while harmonizing with the overall building architecture and exterior environment. 231 In my opinion, Interior Architecture is a merging of interior design and architecture. 25 of 56 Response Text 232 Interior architecture is the practice of architecture & planning in the interior of a Feb 22, 2010 5:09 PM building. It is an important aspect of design that is often overlooked. I think a challenge is making people recognize it's importance. My challenge, especially these days, is keeping up with the newest product developments in keeping with sustainability. Also, as a sole practitioner, I don't have room to store a sample library and am off the radar for many product reps. 233 Interior Architecture includes all aspect of Design which creates an Interior Feb 22, 2010 5:10 PM Environment. 234 In my opinion, interior architecture is the design of the user experience. Feb 22, 2010 5:11 PM My expertise is in the world of environmental branding as an outgrowth of retail store prototyping. Consistant principles are high design integrity. Expectations are that the AIA will be perceived as the thought leader in the industry. 235 Interior Architecture for Aging Population Feb 22, 2010 5:12 PM 236 Interior Architecture takes place within a pre-existing building envelope and Feb 22, 2010 5:12 PM consists of programming the client's needs; space planning to fulfill those needs in a code compliant manner; establishing a realistic budget to fulfill the client's needs and wishes; designing the environment and selecting finishes, furnishings, fixtures and materials, as well as engaging mechanical, electrical and lighting consultants (etc.) to assist in this process; and monitoring that the project is completed on time, on budget and per the design intent. 237 1. Interior Architecture is the design and organization of interior spaces taking Feb 22, 2010 5:14 PM into consideration the use and function of the space, and the desired human interaction within the space which includes personal perceptions and experience. 2. The specialized knowledge we have gained in our practice consists of how to interact with the potential users of the spaces we design. With one client who employs people who are legally blind, we learned that they are able to see but in lights and darks. From this knowledge we designed dark carpet borders and base and broke the pattern at doors allowing them to use the facility without their canes. 3. The main challenge we face always seems to be with budget. In this current market we have seen some relief and bids are coming in very competitively which ultimately helps the Client. Another challenge is marketing to clients so they can understand the benefit of having and architect or interior designer properly design their space. Many times clients will have a stamp a set of plans with all spaces being square with white wall paint and vct floors. They get into the space and it is not what they expected and are upset. They only initially paid attention to the professional fee difference and not the value. 4. I see more architectural and interior design firms branching out and offering commercial furnishings (purchase and install) as an emerging trend. 4. Our aspirations are to grow the interiors side of our firm by continuing to pursue design and install on turnkey projects. We currently sell commercial furnishings and artwork as an option to our clients. 238 Interior Architecture is the continuation of the buildings exterior design principles Feb 22, 2010 5:15 PM into the interior of the building forming a unified, intrinsic, whole and complete architectural idea. Exterior and Interior=Ying and Yang... 239 It is the space within the structure in practicle and practice terminology. But the Feb 22, 2010 5:15 PM quality of that space and the success of interior design is often impacted by exterior (uncontrolled) views and influences. 240 too much attention is paid to the difference between Interior Architecture and Feb 22, 2010 5:16 PM Architecture. While there may be unique problems and skills required to address them, the process of design is essentially the same.

26 of 56 Response Text 241 Interior Architecture is the art & science of spatial and elemental arrangement to Feb 22, 2010 5:17 PM enhance client-user experience of a space. 242 This is more than one question and the response requires too much effort Feb 22, 2010 5:18 PM 243 The Form and Function of an interior space. We need info on best practices in planning, building use, safety and code issues, sustainability as a best practice and not a requirement, industry benchmarks in cost, efficiency, cross consultation, working toward full adoption of BIM for interiors projects. 248 Interior Architecture is an integral and inseparable component of good overall Feb 22, 2010 5:19 PM architectural design of new buildings. For this reason, the challenges for Interior Architecture are similar to those in Architecture itself, the need provide better design for less short term and long term cost and the need to provide designs that are sustainable. 249 Interior Architecture is the creation of spaces. Challenges are that most think it is Feb 22, 2010 5:21 PM application of materials-interior design. As an architect, I would to be able to create spaces inside and out--cohesive design. 250 Interior Architecture in general encompasses the design and construction of all Feb 22, 2010 5:23 PM spaces inside the building envelope. The design of interior architecture often involves close interaction with the actual users of the space - the specialized knowledge I have gained has to do with heightened listening skills, more effective team management, and translating users’ personal expectations into built space. These are also ongoing challenges. Consistently we need to understand that characteristics of the spaces we design, from finishes, furnishings, lighting, and air quality, are often the most important ways people interact with architecture. Of course, the strongest emerging trend continues to be the creation of sustainable environments, with a focus on more access to natural light. My aspirations as a designer of work place environments are to design, and see built, effective environments that support collaboration and enhanced productivity. 251 this committee needs to focus on value creation through our service. similar to the Feb 22, 2010 5:25 PM healthcare group focusing on research based design, interiors should be focused on more than simple aesthetics.

27 of 56 Response Text 252 Interior Architecture is creating an architectural experience within the building. It Feb 22, 2010 5:25 PM is less permanent in many cases than the base building architecture because it can respond more readily to the changing uses of a building as well as changes in technology and workplace philosophy.

The specialized knowledge I have gained in my practice include the following: - Programming and evaluation of the needs of the users of the space. Frequently the users try to throw solutions at their work environment needs without really understanding the questions. Over the past many years, I have learned to move beyond the surface issues and get into the root needs of the users. This typically generates a better solution than trying to do a plug and play design from a dissimilar workplace.

One of the biggest challenges I have is reusability of furniture and construction materials. When a company has a significant investment in, for example, systems furniture, the fiscally and environmentally responsible thing to do is to redeploy as much as possible to acheive the desired end result.

The emerging trend of "green" architecture is a double-edged sword. In the process of designing buildings that meet the agenda of the global warming community, we are often sacrificing the functionality and aesthetics of the built environment. We have tried to compensate for this by trying to redefine aesthetics to accept the cobbled designs that are currently coming from many of the progressive architectural firms around the world.

Interior architecture is in a difficult situation at this time. I expect that we will see a significant evolution of the built environment as many of the current ground- breaking trends are found to have the same flaws as the old ground-breaking trends that never took hold. We will see that the global-warming star we have hitched Architecture to is a house of cards and deflecting attention from the real issues that have been lost in the shuffle. Those issues include continuous depletion of non-renewable resources, developing truely sustainable buildings without the politially charged influences of the day, and neglecting the real workplace needs of individual workers in favor of management dictates. 253 Interior Architecture is an effort by privileged males to reclaim a segment of the Feb 22, 2010 5:26 PM profession. In my practice, architectural offices have found an unlicensed female to pick colors. The specifications and code provisions are after thoughts. Most architects are intimidated by a capable, licensed professional designer, male or female. We need a truce! Some middle ground that we can all live with and respect each other. A licensed professional, focused on interior architecture, is critical to most projects. Code issues, circulation, and the structure's core personality are determined by interior decisions. Often the interior program drives the design! Architects should fear engineers and contractors for defending their market, not their allies in interior design! I seek a practice that provides care and nurtures occupants. 254 Interior Architecture is the intersection of architecture and interior design and Feb 22, 2010 5:26 PM involves crafting interior spaces that provide functional programmatic and planning solutions while creating identity and ambiance through the integration of materials, lighting, furniture, fixtures, etc. I have gained specialized knowledge in both the architectural and interior design realms -- building systems, structural systems, codes and standards, fabrics, carpet, furniture, manufacturing processes, product procurement, product delivery. Needs and challenges include educating clients on the role of the architect and the architectural process. Consistent principles include a create, yet responsible approach to designing interior spaces that requires a thorough knowledge of both architecture and interior design. The most notable emerging trend is in sustainable design and indoor air quality, which is critical in the realm of interior architecture, since it most directly impacts the experience of users, whether they are people who live, work, shop, dine, sleep, or recuperate in our buildings.

28 of 56 Response Text 255 Resolution with the interior design community on licensing (or the need for) for Feb 22, 2010 5:29 PM interior designers. 256 Interior Architecture is architectural practice focused on the experiential interior Feb 22, 2010 5:29 PM environment of the end user. It is driven by program, materiality, and environmental psychology. Additional specialized knowledge for me, has come from the LEED Commercial Interiors track and environmental psychology studies. It can be a challenge to fully integrate these practices into a very traditional minded archtecture firm, that may only see opportunity for "interior design" as a color and finish selector, and not an integrated part of the entire design process and final product. Innovations in materiality and in the social psychology field can be very influential to expanding possibilities within design. 257 Interior Architecture is the specialized practice of creating environments inside the Feb 22, 2010 5:29 PM building's exterior shell. Interior architecture encompasses the full range of design disciplines including lighting design, furniture design, acoustic design. Green or sustainable design initiatives continue to provide the greatest opportunities for growth in this area. 258 Interior Architecture is human centered with a focus on design from the inside out, Feb 22, 2010 5:30 PM shaping space holistically to enrich human experience. We shape space by integrating form, light, materiality, color texture, art and furnishings, that resonates poetically and pragmatically with people and place. In my 27 year practice in this field I have gained acute awareness of the psychology of place, evolving and evaluating design from the perspective of those who will experience it; to walk in the shoes, lie on the stretcher, sit in the wheel chair and then to shape and enrich the journey accordingly. Challenge: As an Interior Architect to be respected as equal in driving design decision making by architectural colleagues. Aspirations: Continue to make a difference in world-class interior architectural design, be a spokesperson for the contributions of interior architects, mentor and reverse mentor emerging interior architects. Trends: need for facility in 3d design (not just glamor shots) tools such as REVIT, 3Dmax, Vectorworks, and supporting tools such as illustrator/Photoshop and InDesign. As architects embrace the value of those trained in interior design as valued professionals. 259 This is not ONE question and if taken seriously demands a long and thoughtful Feb 22, 2010 5:30 PM answer. I regret I don't have the time for that. 260 In our practice, Interior Architecture and Base Building Architecture are treated as Feb 22, 2010 5:31 PM one for new build projects. We try to continue the design from building through site design and exterior hardscape, to interior architecture with most clients to complete the architectural design of our projects. 261 interior architecture is the part of the buildng that is most often experienced by Feb 22, 2010 5:31 PM users of the building. I specialize in public library design so the interior furniture, floor finishes and ceiling landscapea are the primary definers of space within the library. 262 interior architecture is not interior decoration, it is architecture with weather Feb 22, 2010 5:32 PM protection. interior architecture projects are normally large scale, mixed use. in the near future, interior architecture projects will increase perhaps even overwhelm architecture projects as less building will be built, more renovation demand and interest in the interior space creation.

29 of 56 Response Text 263 Interior Architecture is about crafting space for human interaction and experience. Feb 22, 2010 5:33 PM It must solve the program while creating intuitive way finding and interesting moments/experiences. The specialized knowledge that I have gained relates to hospitality design and how to weave the different programmatic elements of a hotel into a cohesive experience for the guest. The challenge of hospitality is staying ahead of the trend curve and anticipating new ways in which we gather, communicate and relax. Staying on top of technology is also a challenge as many designs take years to realize.

I think that green design will continue to define our practices. I also think that innovative project delivery systems that are more efficient will continue to be important as we have all seen fee compression without scope reduction in the projects on which we are proposing.

My expectation is that in the US we will continue to see more adaptive re-use and remodels, which will require experienced interior architects. 264 Interior Architecture, I believe, is the manipulation of interior space to meet the Feb 22, 2010 5:34 PM needs of the Owner, meet or surpass life safety regulations and create an interesting and informative physical environment. Specialized knowledge I've gained is relative to materials, structure, building codes, etc. Needs are a constant supply of projects and information to address them. Emerging trends are primarily green initiatives. As far as expectations I'm counting on the technological advancement of the profession and aspire to keep up with it! 265 Interior Architecture I think is misunderstood. Not many people understand the Feb 22, 2010 5:36 PM depth of details that is incorporates. 266 The design of the built environment within the enclosure of a bulding. Feb 22, 2010 5:36 PM

I am very much interested in the art of interior detailing. The scale and direct contact that one experiences in an interior environment makes the quality of detailing extremely important.

The challenge of interior design deals with being able to effectively manage time, since one tends to work on a number of small scope projects with tighter fees compared to base building architects which tend to work exclusively on one large scale project with large fees.

A consistent principle that is becoming ever more relevant, is the idea of intentively listening to how your client operates and functions in order to design for them a space that effectively best reflects this.

I expect the practice of Interior Design will steadily grow, as clients see the positive impact well executed interior design is to their culture, and they way they effectively operate within their environments. 267 Interior architecture is interior space which is an extension of the exterior building Feb 22, 2010 5:39 PM envelope created through a combination of artistic expression representative of the client and crafted through careful integration of engineering, life-safety practices, best quality of light, appropriate ventilation and material selections to meet a client's needs and are sensitive to the environment and health of its inhabitants. 268 SPACES, SPACES. Feb 22, 2010 5:42 PM INTERACCTION WITH THE MATERIALS COLORS AND TEXTURES, WE NEED TO CREATE MORE ELEMENTS TO INFLUENCE BEHAVIOR AND FEELINGS

30 of 56 Response Text 269 We practice the interiors of Hospitality projects and practice to produce designs Feb 22, 2010 5:43 PM that are inspirational for the hospitality user and viable for the owner. One of the biggest challenges we see is acquiring staff with the right skill sets. Oftentimes, Interior Architecture involves a balance of minute details down to a fabric selection up to larger scale issues such as 3-dimensional space planning. Students from traditional interior trade colleges or full-blown architectural colleges don't have that balance. 270 Interior Architecture is the design of the indoor environment allowing users to Feb 22, 2010 5:44 PM experience the space with by sight, sound, touch and above all comfort. We have gained knowledge in specifying finishes that makes one feel comfortable in a space. The one consistent principle in interior architecture is that the space is healthy to be in. I believe that the emerging trend is to make the space satisfy as many human senses as possible. My aspirations are to make spaces that are healthy and exciting along with being enjoyable to be in. 271 Interior Architecture has been non-residential, more technically oriented than Feb 22, 2010 5:45 PM straight on single famile residential. I am an Architect and an Interior Designer. 272 First of, I'm an architect and for me interior architecture is essential in carrying out Feb 22, 2010 5:46 PM the intentions designed for the building exterior inside. It is the continuum of desires and aspirations intended for the building as a whole. 273 Interior Architecture is the sensitivity adopted in the process of space planning Feb 22, 2010 5:46 PM that coherently reflects the need of the occupant with the design criteria mutually agreed upon by the occupant and designer / architect. In our practice we have constantly engaged the owner to be conscious of rapid advancements in , safety, and simplicity. We need to keep abreast with materials advancements, growing customer needs, construction challenges, financing abilities and city requirements. We hope to be able to speak to the market at large and determine what the real issues are and how to best satisfy the client with their needs. 274 Interior architecture (as opposed to interior design or, gulp, decoration) means a Feb 22, 2010 5:49 PM holistic approach to design. NOT simply applying finishes to a box, it is a comprehensive design and craft of interior spaces. The challenge, as always, is for Architects with specialized knowledge and skill at interior architecture to demonstrate their value - often with colleagues in the same office who don't understand the value of interior architecture. 275 Interior architecture is what architecture is about - the use of a building is Feb 22, 2010 5:52 PM ultimately satisfied by the interior configuration of space. Interior space planning in commercial projects. Locating new projects. First meet the client's program requirements and then improve on the spacial experience as much as possible. To continue to be of service in the industry. 276 After 14 years in the profession, I am now just being exposed to what I would call Feb 22, 2010 5:53 PM interior architectre. I am interested in best practices, and efficient practice and process tools. 277 In 50 years of practice, I always had an Interior Design Dept. that was allway a Feb 22, 2010 5:53 PM vital part of our practice. With a normal staff ot 10 to 15, the Interior Design was usually 1 to 3. During a couple of slow down periods, the Interior Work carried the Office. 278 It's very important to discuss with the client and team the differentiation of roles Feb 22, 2010 5:55 PM and responsibilities of all team members, particularly the base-building architect and interior architect, if they are two separate parties 279 I am an architect who has practice as a traditional architect and I have done Feb 22, 2010 5:56 PM projects that are primarily interior architecture and those that meld the two. 280 Interior architecture is unique amoung design disciplines in that it demands an Feb 22, 2010 5:57 PM extraordinarily close working relationship between professional and client to determine the client's requirements and thereby develop design solutions that meet the client's utilitarian and aesthetic requirements.

31 of 56 Response Text 281 Interior Architecture is the design on the iside of buildings. People relate most to Feb 22, 2010 5:57 PM the interior of buildings because that is where the interaction with the building is. 282 Five questions are not a simple question. Feb 22, 2010 5:58 PM 283 Interior Architecture is the design of spaces within an established skin or exterior Feb 22, 2010 5:59 PM framework. The specialized knowledge I have gained in my practice is the for retrofits. My needs and challenges involve the blurring line between the scope of architects and interior designers when it comes to Interior Architecture. The consistent principles and emerging trends that define Interior Architecture relate to the transformation of a space involving all aspects, not just the design of a space--structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing. 284 Interior Architecture: The design and construction of beautiful spaces and Feb 22, 2010 6:01 PM accessories, suitable for human habitation, that accentuate and/or compliment the corresponding design and construction of the related and equally beautiful exterior structure and spaces. I am most interested in the continued evolution of the use of diverse materials and/or the use of existing materials in new applications, the appreciation of modestly sized spaces that do not compromise beauty and the functional and emotional fulfillment of the spaces inhabitants, attention to the importance of sustainability, reduction in material cost without compromising beauty and creativity, and an appreciation for minimalism. 285 interior architecture is a wonderful connection between interiors and architecture. i Feb 22, 2010 6:05 PM am a licensed architect as well as a registered interior designer and have worked in both phases for many years. i am trying to bridge the gap between interiors and architecture with the help of interiors architecture. The challenge is that many firms are not willing to do so. they claim they want to but in reality will not welcome the change. i feel i have learnt immensely in the practice of interior architecture and hope i can make a difference in the profession somehow and lead or guide to make projects successful. 286 pretty cool Feb 22, 2010 6:05 PM 287 it's all architecture, interior or exterior. Buildings have insides and outsides. Feb 22, 2010 6:07 PM 288 To me, interior architecture involves the design of any interior aspect of a building, Feb 22, 2010 6:07 PM including interior spatial features, detailing, color and materials and furnishings. The challenges for a practitioner designing the interior of a structure are much the same as those designing the shell: budget, appropriate use of materials, creation of a dynamic and pleasing space that satisfies the requirements of the owner/users. An additional challenge that we as architects have today is convincing owners that we provide a valuable service and theat they will have a far better product for our involvement.

A constant principal is the ability to create spaces that are interesting, functional and make the experience of using the space, even if it is just walking through a building better than it would have been had we not been involved. To do this it may be proper to challenge the viewer with something new, or to give a sense of familiarity with recalling the past in forms, materials, or textures.

32 of 56 Response Text 289 Interior Architecture for me is architecture, even though our practice is fully Feb 22, 2010 6:10 PM interiors focused, and overwhelmingly workplace oriented. Our job as architects is to understand the issues and goals facing our clients, and use that programmatic knowledge to 'solve the problem', i.e. design an environment which support the client's objectives. The challenges facing the profession continue to be primarily economic, followed closely by public perception.

For the economics, we (read the AIA), need to fully address the marketplace and the practitioners - which is still not the AIA's driver - for whatever reason. The Institute hasn't been a powerful force in the business community nor on Capital Hill for much too long. The AIA's sole focus for some years from now should be to raise the economic position of the profession and its practitioners. It was a shame to hear at a recent convention that attendees hadn't contributed to our political side more than $10k at the conference. And I'm in that non-contributing group because I haven't seen the focus that needs to happen. And even as Chair of the Interiors Comm. in the mid-1980s.

The second of two prime areas is public perception. The AIA's secondary charge must be to make the business community recognize the value that we bring to corporate America - not the great single family homes, not retail shops or restaurants - but corporations that control the global economy. Let's seek out architects that will carry that banner and make them the public face of the AIA.

Perhaps all of this will eventually enable young practitioners to make a decent living fresh out of school and raise architects to a powerful new place in the business world. 290 Interior Architecture is a specialized practice in the field is architecture primarily Feb 22, 2010 6:14 PM focusing on an interior environment and usually deals with an existing shell. Interior Architecture does not primarily concentrate on aesthetic but the environment in general and how every component of it works together in unison, including but not limited to acoustics, air quality, light quality and other human factors. The strength of creating a sustainable and HEALTHY green interior environment have demanded interior architects to really focus on an over-all design approach that delivers an aesthetic & feel that makes an interior space more livable & breathable for occupants. My expectations & aspirations is to continue to broaden my practice in the field of interior architecture b 291 Interior Architecture is the application of all architectural construction skill sets in Feb 22, 2010 6:16 PM combination with interior design, and an expertise in renovation, new construction, materials selection, environmental design, lighting, water and energy consumption, network architecture, acoustics, planning and furniture selection, color, texture, way-finding, and effective and practical sustainability. 292 Interior Architecture is a synthesis of structural knowledge applied to space Feb 22, 2010 6:18 PM planning and the interior development of a building; as opposed to interior design which is not intended to deal with structural matters.

33 of 56 Response Text 293 Interior Architecture is the design and detail of an interior space to communicate Feb 22, 2010 6:18 PM to those using it a "theme" i.e.; thought, business, inspiration, art, movement, calm, peace, etc. While these "themes" are not necessarily overt, the complete design gives these feelings as an undercurrent as one passes through the space.

The specialized knowledge that I have gained is that the interior and exterior of a project need to relate in some way. There should not be a complete disconnect or dismissal of the surrounding of the space. The current needs and challenges in this economic time are to find work, to keep moving forward with thought and design. The consistent principles are to meet the intent of the client, there should not be one’s own ego in the process, and our job is to work with in budgets and durability of products. The emerging trends that will be defining our discipline with be locality (as in putting local elements, colors, etc. into design), sustainable materials, a sense of worth of the design and timelessness, solidarity and feeling. My expectations would be to continue to create spaces that are memorable, that compelling and to be known for those types of work. 294 I "discovered" interior architecture when I went to work as an intern for a firm that Feb 22, 2010 6:21 PM designed high end residential. My eyes were opened to a world of materiality, light and detailing that affected the daily use of architecture. When I moved form that firm to a large commercial firm, i found that they were looking for a "bridge person" who had an architectural background, but was interested in the portions of the building within the skin and structure. Having taught at a University that offers degrees in both Arch and Interior Design, I feel that most schools have an artificially limited view of what a architect or interior architect...however, I do think that there has been a trend in the last few years of more crossover in the disciplines, including furniture and ...which is a good thing. I aspire to design everything from the exterior window wall system to the art installation inside!! 295 Interior architecture seems to be sadly neglected by many architects. Too many Feb 22, 2010 6:22 PM are concerned only with getting glossy exterior photos published in a magazine to consider anything as simple as interior function or life safety. Architects need a reminder of why we are asked to design buildings... it's not for photo ops. 296 We are looking forward to information regarding the Interior Architectural Feb 22, 2010 6:25 PM Knowledge Community. We have added an interiors department to our firm within the last year. We are still defining our needs and challenges. 297 Interior Architecture should be constantly striving to enhance the users experience Feb 22, 2010 6:25 PM in a place. While designing the designer should be constantly thinkking about how the user will engage in the space and, where applicable, the designer should produce a narrative for his or her client so that the client will understand how, where and when the user will engage. 298 1.) Interior Architecture (previously referred to as Interior Design) is primarily Feb 22, 2010 6:26 PM focused on anything relating to the interior of the building (including minor exterior openings - i.e. windows & doors). Note: basically the building envelope & roof are generally not included. Typical work would be renovations, remodels & tenant improvement. 2.) Specialized knowledge includes: structural, electrical, comm, glazing; as well as, building, accessibility & life safety codes. 3.) Challenges include the economy (& other architects): i.e. when design work for new buildings diminishes, then other architects want to bid on interiors work too; making Interior Architects vulnerable to being out of work. 4.) The emerging trend is more renovation work due to greener building design (building re-use). 5.) My aspiration is that other architects will understand (& acknowledge) the differences between Interior Architects and interior decorators; and consequently, open doors for more work to go to the Interior Architect.

34 of 56 Response Text 299 I think Interior Architecture is the work inside the building envelope while being Feb 22, 2010 6:27 PM sensitive, aware and cablable of meshing the inside and outside layers as needed. I think cost sensitivity during the design process is always such a hugh factor, also the question how architects charge for furniture selection services, and my hope is as I begin my own firm is to be able to meet my clients needs across a broad range of services in a specific market sector. 300 Creation of space as experiential. Psycology of workspace environment. The Feb 22, 2010 6:28 PM ability to assess existing office spaces and identify need. Need more good specialty programmers, not architects ,who really understand programming and how to identify client needs. Architects are trained to solve problems - not identify them. ZThe trend towards sustainable applications in the built environment is key to moving forward in the profession. The consistent principle of 'delighting the client' and exceeding expectations is timeless. I expect that I probably won't win an Eames chair, but you're getting good feedback anyway...:) 301 I believe interior architecture is the space within we spend a geat deal of our lives Feb 22, 2010 6:28 PM and should not be a static environment, but should be flexible to accomodate the user's frame of mind at any given moment. It is the challenge of the architect to incorpporate materials, light, and energy that can be absorbed by all the senses and leave the occupant energized after experiencing the space. The specialized knowledged that I have gained is the ability to retrieve the most information from the client through interviews, visual experiences, and integration into their lives. I think this is specialized because it has taken many years to develop the skills to interact and respond with solutions in an efficient manner. My needs and challenges change and I like it this way so I can maintain a fresh perspective on project related issues, and am constantly trying to sort out information that is sometimes lost in trends that may not necessarily consider the longevity of the clients needs. The consistent principles are simple. Ethics, good design, and taking responsibility. The emerging trends seem to focus around communication, technology, and environmental goals. My expectations have not changed over the years. I expect a lot from myself and how I am viewed by my clients. I always expect to find a solution to a problem and provide a natural feeling transition throughout the process. I value a clients trust and hope to build and maintain friendships from business relationships. I view my aspirations as the improvement of my last task to maintain the enjoyment of the profession at the forefront. At the end of the day the billable hours never add up to the rewards that have come with a successful project. I always aspire to have fun with design and invite my clients along for the ride. 302 What is interior architecture - use of space inside an exterior enclosure - Feb 22, 2010 6:29 PM can't/shouldn't be separated from exterior. 303 I am an architect who specializes in design for aging, but not in the way the AIA Feb 22, 2010 6:35 PM portrays it. We design for aging to occur as all of us age from cradle to grave. The interior architecture is critical to the success of vital aging. Universal design is a major part of this. 304 Interior Architecture is the application of both architectural and interior design Feb 22, 2010 6:36 PM expertise to an existing building. It presents unique challenges in dealing with existing conditions and using the existing vernacular within the new design context. In practicing Interior Architecture, I have gained a knowledge of lighting, furniture, materials, and other aspects of the built environment, that I might not otherwise have gained had I stuck with core & shell. I hope that the fabricators will continue to create products that better meet the needs of the ultimate users of the space, with more ergonomic, sustainable and safe products. 305 Non-structural design or changes to the spaces of a building Feb 22, 2010 6:37 PM 306 Building Codes and Local Code requirements in different jurisdictions. Feb 22, 2010 6:37 PM

35 of 56 Response Text 307 I actually tend to think that interior architecture is integral to the overall building Feb 22, 2010 6:37 PM architecture. It jst varies as to whether it is something more permanent (vs simple finish selection). WEll current need/challenge is simply finding work. Until investment returns - there's not going to be much for anyone to do. Sustainability and enduring qualities (recyle/reprurposed/reuse stratgeies are big). I am hoepful this downturnd/emphais un sustainability completely changes the view of a space only having the lifespan of a lease. 308 IA is the practice of architecture for all spaces within the building, that include Feb 22, 2010 6:39 PM programming, space planning, code analysis and design including to a limited extent furnishings. 309 Interior Architecture is a specialization within architecture focused on the interior Feb 22, 2010 6:40 PM environment. I'm specialized in space planning, interior design, specification of interior finishes, furniture, signage, and lighting. Staying up to date on products and specifying products that will perform. (Flooring issues are huge.) I'd love a consumer reports for interior materials and furniture. Evidence Based research is critical. Clients know the buzz words and want information. 310 The public needs to be more educated on waht Interior Architecture is. Many still Feb 22, 2010 6:40 PM think that this specialty is what most Interior Designer or Decorators can do. This is similar to the thinking that draftsman replace Architects for providing the same service at a lesser cost. 311 In my practice in Hawaii, this is difficult to define as the edges between indoor and Feb 22, 2010 6:41 PM outdoor are blurred. Sometimes, we build projects without exterior walls. So then, where does the interior begin? 312 To me, interior architecture IS architecture. However, what I have seen in Feb 22, 2010 6:42 PM professional practice is that interior designers distinguish themselves from other architectural designers by having a more detailed knowledge of furnishings, window coverings, fabric, color, interior materials and the industry that manufactures interior products. 313 IA is the comprehensive design of interior spaces of any building or part of a Feb 22, 2010 6:43 PM building, incorporating space planning for uses, expected occupants, furnishings, and spatial quality. It should consider the suitablity of spatial flow and experience for the anticipated uses. We have learned to help our clients prioritize their spatial needs and inter-relationships to give them a more effective enviroment. The challenge is to keep all the considerations clearly in front of a client so that they don't get side-tracked on a single idea (usually a seemingly cheap expedient) that then interfers with or prevents several desirable opportunities from happening. This firm has always included , "Design With Nature" practices, minimal site intrusion, etc over the last thirty four years, the recent popularity of the "Green Movement" has made it much easier to show clients and have them want these treatments included in their projects (as opposed to not bring it up for fear that they would simply reject them as too expensive). We need more information to continually twick our ideas for even greater effectiveness. Green is definitely here for the long run at all levels of architectural design. 314 Interior Architecture is creating environments that make us feel good, work well Feb 22, 2010 6:44 PM and generally contribute to teh well being of all. 315 Anything portion of the building that not part of the base building structure. Some Feb 22, 2010 6:46 PM of this is done as a part of the initial owner requirements and later refined further as a post construction activity to prepare the space for the user. Obviously this is an ongoing process as requiremnts change. Defining the corporate image to suit departmental and individual requirements. Worked on many tenant improvement projects for large oil companies, banks, retail companies, etc. 316 I believe strongly that both architecture and interiors works hand in hand. A Feb 22, 2010 6:47 PM wholistic design approach of outside-in and inside-out is of great value to our client. 317 creating an interor physical environment designed to meet the programatically- Feb 22, 2010 6:47 PM defined needs of a user or users

36 of 56 Response Text 318 Architecture that focuses on the interior of the building, interior detailing, and Feb 22, 2010 6:48 PM space planning. 319 to us, interior architecture is intrinsically tied into architecture as a whole. it's not Feb 22, 2010 6:52 PM an afterthought or decoration, but considered from the very beginning. with that in mind, it's ever more important for us architect to understand the appropriate application of materials and equipment that will not compromise the sustainability and design integrity of the project. without a doubt, the environmental impact of interior design is most critical to our practices - quality of air, light, acoustic, and visual. 320 There are three areas of interior practice which I have been involved with: Feb 22, 2010 6:53 PM 1. FF&E 2. Architectural Interiors as part of the architectural deiscipline 3. Whole facility, programming, master planning, building shape and architectural form giving. 321 interior architecture: best practice of designing interior spaces and their detailing Feb 22, 2010 6:54 PM interface with architecture and finishes as an integrated process delievery. Specialized knowledge: I have built my interior architecture knowledge interfacing detailing and finishes - three dimesionally, understanding how everything comes together as a volume and not as a surface. Emergency trends: healing environments, patient ficused care and flexible spaces 322 Does Interior Architecture have an established definition? As a registered Feb 22, 2010 6:54 PM architect and interior designer teaching in a CIDA accredited program, I'm aware that an increasing number of accredited Interior Design schools are labeling the Interior Design degree as an Interior Architecture degree. Is this the realm of the architect or the interior designer? Our program is housed in a School of Architecture and our students share the same curriculum with architecture students in their first two years. So, I feel the label of Interior Architecture might apply to the learning experiences our students are engaged in, but I would not make the same assumptions about an Interior Design program housed in Home Economics or Fashion Merchandising programs. There have been a lot of "turf- wars" between engineers, architects, and interior designers about their ability to provide professional services. The battle over Interior Architecture and who is legally qualified to provide these services seems a unresolved matter. 323 IA is to design spaces to house, support and enhance all human activities inside Feb 22, 2010 6:56 PM new -or existing buildings.

Special knowledge in the manipulation of spaces through the use of light, color, proportion (height vs width), and continuity.

Challenge: To keep up to date with CAD developments in a slow economy.

IA discipline is defined by principles such as: Creativity and innovation.

Expectations: A positive turnaround in the economy.

Aspiration: To surpass the expectations of our clients and to develop strong, mutually-enhancing relations with them. 324 It is a blend of Interior Design and Architecture. Knowledge of forming space, Feb 22, 2010 6:57 PM organizational flow and productive environments in an existing shell. Challenges are how to keep improving our process of delivery: faster, cheaper. Trends are reduced time frames to complete our work, sustainable design aspects. My expectations are to provide a better space than the client expected. 325 For my practice, interior architecture is NOT interior design - it is simply the Feb 22, 2010 6:58 PM buildout of interior space. We hire interior designers to take our drawings and ideas to implement selection of materials and colors.

37 of 56 Response Text 326 Interior Architecture is conceiving of interiors from a holistic perspective that looks Feb 22, 2010 6:59 PM at all of underlying variables from core and shell to finishes and focuses on the interiors as a speciality. The specialized knowledge gained in practice is working with clients to understand their needs and be able to both analyze the clients situation and provide a guiding path for an optimal solution. My needs and challenges are to find good clients that appreciate the knowledge and effort it takes to do good design and be willing to pay for that service. The consistent principles and emerging trends that define our discipline are: 1. Communication is the key to a good client relationship and understanding the issues. 2. Looking at the 1st principles of what creates a good space is the key. 3. The computer is now interlocked with the office. 4. The future of the office is creating more hospitality club like spaces and creating the settings that allow for appropriate individual and group work. My expectations and aspirations are to help move our clients to better workplace environments that suit their needs and fit their budgets and schedule. A good interior architect is the faciltator between a client's aspirations and creating the physical reality that allows those aspirations to be achieved. 327 Architectural build-outs. Tweaking the interior of a shell. Feb 22, 2010 7:02 PM

38 of 56 Response Text 328 Hello fellow colleagues! Is that a simple question? I don't think so! I graduated Feb 22, 2010 7:02 PM from The Ohio State University's school of architecture with a 4-year undergrad degree in architecture and, since then, I have been trying to define what is "architecture." The pat and dried answer from college is that architecture is the art and science of creating functional, aesthetically pleasing, and safe buildings. So, if you want to narrow down the definition to define 'interior architecture,' I suppose the implied definition of architecture would be inherently implied. So, to the point, interior architecture, to me, is the creation of form, space and order of interiors as well as the ornament, color, and mood of the finish materials, furnishings, and fixed elements that are not necessarily non-structural.

As far as what specialized knowledge I have gained in my practice, I would say that it is a variety of things. I would reference page 101 in the book "101 Things I Learned in Architecture School" by Matthew Frederick. There, he titles the page "Architects are late bloomers." Indeed, that description is certainly befitting of me. Over the course of my life I have been fortunate to work for two excellent firms in Columbus, Ohio and then on to two outstanding firms in Orange County, California. I have revised sepias using erradicator fluid on government drawings for post offices, sketched restaurant seating layouts for Baker's Squares and Taca Cabanas, hand-drafted beautifully-designed custom homes for clients in Laguna Beach and Kauai. I've worked on my own and felt a bit 'lost' at times, as a woman in architecture, prior to getting my license in 2002 (that's where the rubber really meets the road, in my humble opinion- when one studies for the architectural licensing exam). I have been an entrepreneur alongside my husband and have had the blessing of creating four successful businesses ranging from a home health care nursing agency to an infusion therapy company, to most recently, a construction and property management company to our current commercial development firm. The one thing I have yet to conquer is how to balance a meaningful and thriving architectural practice and a happy home life for my husband and our daughter; the two goals seem to be at counter-purposes and, I admit, it is frustrating most of the time.

You've also asked: What are your needs and challenges? That is a huge question. I personally need to work with open-minded colleagues who value and believe in my ability to get the job done and who support my eagerness to learn new things (like Revit, or the latest AutoCad version, and other support softwares- at "my age"). I need more current education. I need to get LEED certified. I want to get an MBA or take some interior design courses on textiles, furniture styles, etc. I need to clearly define my career goals. Most of what I need will be up to me to obtain. So far, I have experienced, that I cannot count on the AIA or the one firm I recently worked for to assist me in meeting my needs and challenges. On a more bright note, I have heard from a friend, who's a licensed interior designer, that the international firm she was working for has a massive database of learning tutorials that any employee could log into and learn anything from AutoCAD to project management. I thought that was more than commendable (and frankly, necessary) and would love to work there! My biggest challenge, I think, is to overcome my own stigma that it is difficult for a 45 + year old to get a job in architecture or to start her own firm and be successful. The second biggest challenge is navigating this wacky economy. Right now, as it stands, this economy is not very conducive to starting new businesses of any sort- unless you're in healthcare, I suppose, and maybe some tech sectors. But, I have never let "situations" control my destiny; by the grace of God, I found fulfilling, full-time employment with a renowned architect during the economic downturn in the 1990's; so, there's always opportunity awaiting for anyone who is willing to be clear about their goals, plan ahead, work hard/ be dedicated, and follow through on meeting clients' expectations (within reason, of course).

The next question: "What consistent principles and emerging trends define our discipline?" Again, this is not a simple question; however, I agree that it is a fundamental and basic question that all who enter this field must be able to answer, at least ponder deeply. Having been away from the field while raising my daughter (during this time I obtained my architectural license, designed a few key interior architecture projects from home, helped39 myof 56 husband build his commercial development business, and went back to work for an architectural firm doing mostly banking projects (check-cashing facilities in low-income areas). The number one principle I see as the footing for any firm or employee is personal integrity. Following that, it would be professional competence, current education, and a thorough understanding of architectural practices. Emerging trends that define our discipline are probably many, but the two that stand out to me are: sustainability/ green architecture and the ever-widening communication gap between baby boomer prinicipals ("How do you turn this Ipod on?") and generation xyz'ers ("Hey, we *live* on-line...!") in the studio. (I guess, the latter really belongs in the "what are your needs..." category). So, to jump back to answer that question better, I think we need better communication across cultural, ethnic and age group lines, and we need a way to educate aging architects to halt "obsoletion," God-forbid.

Lastly, you've asked: "What are your expectations and aspirations?" 'The sky's the limit when your heart is in it'...I think this very apt adage sums up how I feel. I expect a lot from myself. I want to be a great mom, wife and a successful architect and/or interior designer. I want to make a difference in the world. I want to be a part of the cutting edge firms that I hope will lead the way, in this country (the U.S.), to fully incorporate sustainability in every area of design. I aspire to continually learn new things, to better myself, to set reachable goals- and some that might be out of reach- and I aspire to never give up on architecture or myself. As architect and author Matthew Frederick said, "If you're going to be in the field of architecture, be in it for the long haul. It's worth it." Because, as he also said at the top of page 101 in his aforementioned book: "Most architects do not hit their professional stride until around age 50!" Maybe, in some cases age 55? We'll see!

Thank you for putting together this survey! It's been a pleasure to answer.

Kind regards, Tara Imani, AIA cell 832.723.1798 Houston, TX Response Text 329 I am looking to share workplace design, metrics, trends, real estate challenges, Feb 22, 2010 7:03 PM etc. 330 simple and beautifull interiors for custom clients that are concern in green Feb 22, 2010 7:06 PM concepts, easy life, happy environments 331 To me, interior architecture goes beyond "interior design" by addressing a more Feb 22, 2010 7:10 PM holistic environment than merely surfaces and furnishings - daylight, space, and structure in ways that shape the experience of place. My specialized knowledge includes that of in-depth building, engineering, and construction knowledge as well as codes and life safety issues. Challenges that I face are those of the practice of architecture being so segmental in a time when green design requires buildings to be addressed in their entirety. I would hope to think that this trend in green design will bring us as architects back to our roots where we were the masters of the project and worked to integrate all aspects of the design process. 332 -The art and science of designing/defining interior spaces Feb 22, 2010 7:15 PM -Impact of design choices on human comfort and behavior -Marketing, Improved profitability, Material research, code analysis, client base -'Greener products and strategies', improved quality and scope 333 To me, Interior Architecture is the application of traditionally exterior Architectural Feb 22, 2010 7:15 PM principles to the interior environment. My specialized knowledge is primarily in materials used and code requirements for interior environments. Needs and challenges are usually time, money and struggle between functional requirements and amount of space to work with. The only emerging trend I have seen consistently for the last few years is fitting more in less space. 334 Need to be updated on the ever changing workplace trends, new generation work Feb 22, 2010 7:19 PM habits and how it affects the design of the workplace. Good interior architecture should reflect the culture of its inhabitants. 335 Interior architecture is the creation of space within pre-defined exterior Feb 22, 2010 7:20 PM parameters. I think my understanding of what a building needs to be successful has increased due to inheriting conditions that don’t work for the new user. We need to embrace interior design as part of interior architecture and be better informed about MEP systems in order to provide the best service. We are only as good as the information we receive from our clients therefore programming is the key to achieving good design. I hope to have a firm that continues to listen to our clients, embrace new approaches to interior architecture (especially new environmentally friendly materials) and always provide unique design twists to make our client’s spaces special. 336 Would like to know more about the integrated roles of Interior Architects and Feb 22, 2010 7:21 PM Interior Designers.

Would like to know what the trends are that are timeless. Not trends that come and go.

Would like to see creative solutions of Interior Architecture for small spaces.

40 of 56 Response Text 337 Interior architecture is the specializaton of Interior Environments, that is, anything Feb 22, 2010 7:21 PM inside the shell of the building. The specialized knowledge is knowing how people will inhabit teh spaces we design, how people move around in a space and how spaces work together. We also have a specialized knowlddge of the things that do into buildings, like furniture and equipment. Needs and challenges would be helping the public understnad what services qwe can provide that are distinct from basic architectural services and having the public understand the added value of using an architect who has special skills in interior environments. Challenges have to do with understanding of te practice and what it can add to a project from the client side. Consistent principals are typically about proper size and use of space, standards for sizes of furntiure and interior objects. Emerging trends are regarding the mobility of technology and the rethinking of our work environments, also another trend, smaller living, working, etc. I expect that the field of interior architecture will continue to be a steady line of projects. I aspire to grow my new firm to a size of 6 employees, I hope that the AIA and the Knowledge communities will continue to be a great resource for me. I hoep to be able to attend an Interior Architecture conference and even get involved at teh committee level. 338 Interior Architect: the design of the inside of a building. Feb 22, 2010 7:22 PM 339 'Interior' refers to the project site - an interior space, and to a more intimate scale Feb 22, 2010 7:22 PM of design than that of a building or structure. 340 I believe that Interior Architecture should have it's own licensing bureau; similar to Feb 22, 2010 7:24 PM the NCARB for Architects. I began my career in Architecture in 1971, a time when referring to the design of Interiors meant "Decorator". In 1980, I was working for an Architectural firm that provided both Architecture and Interior Design Services. I was assigned a new project - perform Programming, Space Planning, Interior Design, Contract Documents and Contract Administration for clients who were relocating to two (2) new speculative high-rise buildings. I was fortunate to have started in Architecture, as the requirements on all the projects called for a working knowledge of Structural systems, HVAC, Electrical, etc. Also, my past experience with Building Codes; dealing with Building Plan Checkers and Inspectors gave me credibility with Developers and other Clients. Another advantage of having an Architectural background, led me to performing additions and exterior remodels to existing buildings. 341 To me, Interior Architecture is where the rubber meets the road in terms of Feb 22, 2010 7:29 PM building function, the aesthetics of the enclosure, and it's primary function as a place of shelter. No small field of inquiry! During my 26 years in practice, I've learned building standards for development (heights of cabinets and doors, typical toilet spacing) and un-learned some of these standards to tailor a building to a user or user group. Does that mean we shouldn't have standards and codes? NO! But they are a beginning to accomodation, not an end. My biggest challenge, mentally, is that people are afraid to deviate from the typical, even if it doesn't work for them, because they can't count on the future either due to swings in the economy, or the rapid rate of change in society & technology. I aspire to combine those fears into an accomodation for now and for the future: it's a big wish. 342 Although I have a Interior Architecture BA degree for Kansas State, I am basically Feb 22, 2010 7:32 PM an Interior Designer. Although there is a distinction between the two, many clients and even design professionals do not understand the differences and additional education required for an Interior Architecture degree. It surprises me that AIA uses the term Interior Architect...is the AIA working to allow true Interior Architects obtain the use of the title???? 343 Interior Architecture is the response to client/customer programming needs Feb 22, 2010 7:35 PM delineated by a functional layout and aesthetic design of the interior of a structure. We need to stay abreast of current trends/practices in alternative officing strategies.

41 of 56 Response Text 344 Interior Architecture brings together multiple disciplines to focus on and create Feb 22, 2010 7:35 PM interior environments that respect and integrate with the building architecture. We have learned that the interior experience is typically more impactful and longer lasting on the user because time is significantly higher inside a structure, than without. Our needs to be appraised of ever-changing and improving technologies and current practices. Emerging trends support sustainable and green concepts, but extend well beyond the boundaries of what was previously "buildable". 345 I work mostly on historic preservation and adaptive use projects; this means that Feb 22, 2010 7:37 PM frequently the core/shell of the building remains in place while the interior is partially or entirely refurbished or redesigned. 346 Interior Architecture is the design of the rooms that make a building useful, Feb 22, 2010 7:39 PM habitable, productive - the interface of materials and structure, the conversation with the exterior, the design of the space that gives a building a purpose. One challenge is how interior architecture is marketed to potential clients through our traditional architectural practice? How do we maximize on the opportunities with interior architecture in the current and future market realities... more retrofits? more renovations? 347 It is really the things that Louis Kahn was talking about; what is tactile, the limits of Feb 22, 2010 7:40 PM our near perifreial vision, what we can sense & smell. 348 Interior Architecture defines how the clients' goals and values are interperted into Feb 22, 2010 7:44 PM the desing that establishes the atmosphere of thier facility.Simply stated, I have learned small selcetions, such as colors in spaces or patterns on the floor, can confuse or help inspire the end user. Their are several elements that can help guide us to create Interior Architecture for many different types of facilities, the challenge is to know how to test the parameters. I believe alot of professionals forget to keep up wiht emrging trends and products. I have seen Architects solely rely on Interior Designers for Interior Elements/Products and the Interior Design is isolated from teh concept of the Exterior Design approach. I would like to discuss what principles could define our disciplines. I'm not sure how to answer that. 349 Interior Architecture is the design of a space that makes you feel comfortable Feb 22, 2010 7:45 PM (warm or cool as appropriate), excites your senses (eyes, smell, hearing, touch, taste) and provokes a inner feeling (happy, sad, overwhelming, in awe) and a sapce which you can rely on to being safe and clean. 350 Interior Architecture is creating functional, inspiring space within a building Feb 22, 2010 7:47 PM envelope to respond to the user's programmatic requirements and culture. My practice has been mostly in corporate interiors, with most projects on the West Coast. Of late, I have been working on more sustainable/LEED projects. The usual challenges are Time and Money: our schedules are driven by real estate/lease expiration dates. Recent challenges include finding enough work in the current economy and the driving down of our fees. I still love interiors - I like the quick turnaround on the projects, the intimate scale and the immediacy of dealing with the end users and creating spaces that have a positive impact on their daily lives. I predict that there will be more interiors than architecture work, since there isn't a lot of money or space available for new construction and it is more sustainable to renovate existing structures than to build from the ground up. 351 Interior Architecture is that portion of design that deals with the interior Feb 22, 2010 7:48 PM environment as an integral component of the whole built environment. Total integration of the built environment, site, exterior and interiors is the vision we try to acheive for our clients. 352 I believe that Interior architecture has the opportunity to florish right now with the Feb 22, 2010 7:52 PM current downturn in our economy, and our hardest hit segment of the market - design/construction - with what-will-soon-be, more significant remodel, re-use and adaptation projects rather than new projects. 353 Interior Architecture is the design and manipulation of all the interior components Feb 22, 2010 7:52 PM including volumes, lighting, finishes, furniture, and artwork.

42 of 56 Response Text 354 Interior Architect is the definition of interior space through architectural elements. Feb 22, 2010 7:55 PM Knowledge gained: that inside out design is more meaning today than ever beofre. Needs: staying current with technology and green. Expectations: to estab;lish the "big idea" and have the idea manifest itslef through the design of the interior mechanism as it relates to the end user's strategical plan and for the exterior to be a reflkection of the interior mechanism and not merely wedding cake (to borrow from Thomas Mayne). 355 1. The development of the interior environment - but the demark point between Feb 22, 2010 7:55 PM the interior and the shell must be well understood by all. 2. coordination is vital 3. special characteristics of materials and finishes, and how to illuminate them for best effect and comfort 4. Sustainability 5. LEED certification (finding the time) 356 How did "..a simple question:..." turn into five very generic wide-open, essay Feb 22, 2010 8:05 PM answer type questions? "What is Interior Architecture?"...give me a break. 357 Although retired from the firm I founded, interior architecture and design was Feb 22, 2010 8:06 PM inherent and vistal to our projects and we crerated some outstanding products, integrating architecture with interior design 358 This "simple" question is really 5 questions that could have extensive answers. Feb 22, 2010 8:07 PM Interior Architecture is the design and analysis of interior space and how it affects its occupants. My specialized knowledge is in acoustics - how sound energy reacts in a space; and it's affect on the occupants. I am a resource; identifying the need and interest in acoustics for the IA Knowledge community and bringing it to them is the challenge. Perhaps the IA Community can sponsor a series of "experts" on selected topics that tour selected chapters (eg an organized speakers team available (for a fee?) that travels together to chapters. The consistent principles are the basics (that don't change); the emerging trends need to be understood, evaluated, and how it effects the IA Community, then determine how to deal with it..and where the appropriate resources are. I haven't thought about expectations and aspirations...however, having said that...how about a large firm roundtable style public forum related to interior design issues..?? 359 Interior Architecture is the tectonic manipulation of interior partitions, millwork, Feb 22, 2010 8:10 PM furniture fixtures and equipment inclusive of decorative systems. 360 Complete integration of project to meet client's needs. Meeting deadlines. Meeting Feb 22, 2010 8:12 PM client's goals. Offering options not considered. Being efficient -- biggest bang for dollars spent. Being green. Consistency of vision and voice across the physical and operational needs of the client by solutions that are mostly physical, but sometimes met in noe physical solutions. 361 Interior architecture is the practice of applying form and structure to create spaces Feb 22, 2010 8:22 PM for interior habitation that enhance the lives of the people using them. Attention to detail, a comprehensive approach to creating space, equal attention to finish, structure and form and a humane and sustainable approach are principles that define our discipline and are those to which I aspire. 362 IA is design of non-exterior envelope spaces; focus on space planning, fire & life- Feb 22, 2010 8:31 PM safety reqs, human environmental needs, lighting & finishes as appropriate to user & context. Specialized knowledge gained over years in having many diverse planning & design aspects in mind from beginning to achieve integrated & effective solution. Needs & challenges: better informed clients to recognize better design is worthwhile, cost-effective. Consistent principle: "to draw is to know". Emerging trend: BIM is hard for an old dog like me to adopt, but it's worth it. Expectations & aspirations: increasingly collaborative role of architect to proactively manage diverse design input from engineers, clients, suppliers, regulators, other specialists

43 of 56 Response Text 363 A definition of Interior Architecture would be a great start. Feb 22, 2010 8:54 PM 364 Interior Architecture is the "core/shell" part of the building interior. This includes Feb 22, 2010 8:58 PM the shaping of interior space, detail of fixed elements, general approach to materials and textures - the hard long-term permanent elements. Interior Design would be the selection of material products, color, and furnishings. - things that have a shorter life and likely to be changed periodicially. 365 Interior Architecture is creating rich spaces within a limited shell, but with more Feb 22, 2010 9:12 PM depth than "decorating." Breaking the box is the most important consideration. Interesting materials is a big need, and the challenge is affording them! 366 Interior Architecture is defining and treatment of space. Feb 22, 2010 9:13 PM Residential interiors, doctors' offices, restaurants. Client's budget is always a challenge. Manufacturer's websites are a major first step in selecting products. The more detailed , the better. Clean and functional interiors which provide the necessary comfort for its occupant. My expectation - improvement in the economy. I am inspired to surve my client and to educate them at the same time. 367 Interior Architecture is the feeling a user gets from being in the envelope created Feb 22, 2010 9:16 PM for the user of the space whether it be warm and inviting to stark and cool....it is the emotional / physical response both conscious and subconscious the architect intends and creates for the environment. 368 We do primarily renovation/restoration of 19th century townhouses and early 2oth Feb 22, 2010 9:22 PM century apartments in NYC. Though not always restoring or recreating original detail, we have learned how to accommodate 21st century systems within the particular characters of the various types, periods and construction techniques. Our over-riding goal, after fulfilling the users programmatic needs is respect for the inherent integrity of the architecture. Our goal, after almost almost 40 years of doing this type of work, reamains the same: how to do it thoughtfully, cost efficiently, and environmentally sensitively. 369 I am an Interior Design practicioner, and my greatest challenge is in educating my Feb 22, 2010 9:26 PM clients, as well as my architectural peers, to the value of engaging an interiors professional early in the overall project process. 370 Challenges: designing spaces that are aesthetically pleasing while being highly Feb 22, 2010 9:27 PM functional and comfortable. 371 Interior Architecture is the design of space as we experience it on the inside of Feb 22, 2010 9:27 PM building. It is materials, tactile qualities, functional aspects, circulation and how we utilize a space. It is very individualized by the client based on specific goals. 372 I have practiced a lot of interiors in my architectural practice and find it the more Feb 22, 2010 9:32 PM human dimension of the design process- how to distinguish from interior designers/decorators and would be interested ininformation on business opportunities and practice and education as I am also an educator. 373 That form of architecture that focuses on the interiors of a structure and its fit-out, Feb 22, 2010 9:34 PM both fixed and transformable. My specialized knowledge has developed into a better understanding of the client needs, the solution options and the degree of success of the final installation. Needs and challenges are always to more easily educate the client/user when marketing, winning the project - determining, contracting for and completing the SOW. Further challenges are the ever present indifference and non-acceptance by a segment of the architectural community of Interior Architecture as a legitimate discipline. I expect that, with time, the majority of the profession will embrace this component as necessary and a specialty that warrants a unique place in the practice.

44 of 56 Response Text 374 Interior Architecture is a discipline with in architecture with a focus on the interior Feb 22, 2010 9:36 PM of a building. This can include, well, everything short of the forming and siting of a building: space, light, movement, integration of subsystems, materials, interior environment..... 375 Interior Architects create interior spaces that are attractive as well as functional. Feb 22, 2010 9:56 PM They use knowledge base principals as their springboard and create from that. 376 Interior architecture is any type of work that consists of finishing, remodeling, Feb 22, 2010 10:04 PM creating or renovating a space within a building. It can be workplace or elevator lobbies, and often extends to the adjacent areas such as restrooms, stairwells, and some outdoor spaces. It can encompass anything that you care about the design, function or appearance of within the building. My experience practicing Interior Architecture has shown me that it is not simply application of materials and installation of walls and ceilings – what someone might have referred to as Interior Design or Decorating in the past. It is worthy of the same amount of planning and thought that goes into creating a new building – and can be as powerful as any other physical architectural statement. It can also be as complex with technology, systems, AV and of course, materials and details. While one does not typically have to work on designing the building systems, you have to be familiar with them in order to have a successful project. Good Interior Architects who are planning and designing spaces apply everything they know about architecture – structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection along with expertise in 3 dimensional space and application of materials. It is not necessarily an easy job. The principles and trends that affect this discipline are sustainability and solutions that positively affect work styles and productivity. Anything that helps support the people who use the space in the most effective and efficient way has to be part of the design discovery and the solutions proposed. Everyone wants to measure what impact the dollars they spend has on the workplace performance – they want a return on their investment and they love a metric that shows it! My expectations are that this part of our profession will continue to grow and that we need to show the next generation of architects that it can be every bit as challenging (and rewarding) as any base building project and that it can be more fun if you like the details. You can be more involved in an interiors project and better rounded than just say, knowing how to detail a curtain wall. 377 Interior Architecture is the holistic approach to designing the buildt environment Feb 22, 2010 10:11 PM for the end user. 378 Our current challenge is educating the client on the value of architects and interior Feb 22, 2010 10:20 PM designers in designing spaces versus Equipment Vendors. 379 Interior Architecture is a very specialized yet broad field. In my position, I have Feb 22, 2010 10:21 PM found incredible opportunity to learn and grow. Never did I anticipate I would find myself in a position such as this. 380 Great Feb 22, 2010 10:22 PM 381 Interior Architecture is the conception, design, documentation, and execution of Feb 22, 2010 10:27 PM interior spaces.

I think that the trend towards greater specialization affects Interior Arch. - both in independent firms and in traditional firms. 382 Implementing LEED interior design principles Feb 22, 2010 10:29 PM 383 Interior Architecture is the design of the places and spaces where people live, and Feb 22, 2010 10:33 PM work, and spend most of their lives every day. Interior Architecture is the understanding that architecture is more than a well composed shell, and that what happens inside a building is as or more important than exterior appearance. Interior Architecture is the opportunity to listen carefully, and communicate clearly, to deeply understand our clients requirements, needs, and expectations; and to provide exhilarating design solutions!

45 of 56 Response Text 384 Interior architecture is designing the quality of an interior space via color, textural Feb 22, 2010 10:38 PM and lighting elements. These facets of design pull together a space and make it memorable and livable. Interaction with the space and mood is set via these interventions. 385 What is Interior Architecture? The design integration of interior spaces into overall Feb 22, 2010 10:40 PM building architecture Special Knowledge/ challenges? Buildings are about their interior spaces. Not just their use of materials but how they successfully and sustainably they employ materials and integrate building systems into a the whole. Expectations & Aspirations - building a greater awareness of our footprint on nature. 386 Interior arquitecture is the detailed conception of interior spaces as we engage in Feb 22, 2010 10:46 PM building design and conceive the larger scale architectural components. In my practice I came to understand that the thinking process is very similar, although in a completely different scale. An important challenges we face is the contractual and legal aspects. The AIA docs. don't include a contract specific for that kind of work. 387 Interior Architecture is very important to all projects, but it is a nessitty to the Feb 22, 2010 10:58 PM housing, cause we shall creat a human comfort there. 388 Interior Architecure is the art and science of defining interior spaces and Feb 22, 2010 11:06 PM experiences for building users. Our firm has created hotel interiors almost exclusively over the past 22 years. Our ability to conceptualize space requirements, understand programs, and effectively deal with limited budgets has served us well. Our challenges have often been overcome by our experience and talent. We have consistently provided high quality design on often limited budgets, and have delivered them on short time schedules. We have always strived to give more bang for our client's buck than they ever expected. 389 Spaces within the exterior envelope of a space which is sucessfully completed Feb 22, 2010 11:23 PM representing all of the following element 1) form. 2) commodity, 3) delight. Material, detailing, perfomance and code applicability knowledge. Needs - more direct interior resources in our library, Challenges - The quickly changing market, cost knowledeg, installation do's & dont's. Principles - quality of natural light & space, Emerging Trends - sustainable products, cradle-to-cradle products, relevant products. My expectations is that cost and sustainability will continue to be major factors influencing interior Archiecture. 390 1. Being the side of architecture with direct human contact and interaction, it Feb 23, 2010 12:10 AM affects how we work, think, feel - how we live; and therefore has the most potential to improve the human condition. 2. Aside from the technical professional based knowledge; what stands out is that clients want the best finishes and best materials at the lowest possible cost 3. Rather than building new construction, my practice is focusing on how to retrofit existing spaces to be energy efficient. 4. The principles that define our discipline - good design, always. This means solid design, space making with a deep, rich message. 5. My expectations are for us to develop materials and technology that can be used to save energy - so we can make buildings that breathe without destroying our planet. 391 NA Feb 23, 2010 12:16 AM 392 Practical knowledge about interior codes. 46 of 56 Response Text 395 Interior Architecture is the design of space as it relates to permanent installations Feb 23, 2010 1:09 AM on the interior of the building. It is complemented by interior design, but it's primary focus is on things that can not be removed from the space. Specialized knowledge includes knowledge of specific materials, green materials, color trends, materials specification and performance, lighting types. Needs and challenges are primarily small firm focused. It's difficult to stay current on materials and finishes as it is not feasible to have a fully current library. So, the freshness of one's design approach needs to be sought out more so than in a firm where things come to you and one wonders, 'how or where can I incorporate that material?'. Also, I like to touch things to learn about them, but without a libary being continually updated, the number of visits to the sources for these materials is just not feasible. It would be great to have a central materials library where one could go research as a small practitioner and then order the things that one thinks might be considered for a project. Kind of like going to any other library, only you'd gather the info only rather than checking it out. For vendors, they would then stop in to that place to update the collective library knowing that a collective of small practitioners would visit it. Challenges also include getting new work to continue the practice and take advantage of the learning curve. Principles and emerging trends?..... I would say that how people are living and what interests them.. and being able to predict the next thing are important as they are in any design industry. Our job is to guide and inspire, not just to follow. If the trend is emerging, you're already late. One needs to pay attention to larger cultural swings and trends and genuine curves. My expectations and aspirations can't be talked about in one breath. I aspire to be a better designer that is capable of a holistic approach to design that allows me to do exterior work, interior architecture, as well as interior design and site design. My expectations right now aren't very good as a small practitioner whose recently started a practice and is seeing the momentum fizzling fast due to the economy. There's always been work to go around, but now it is really a fight to find it and get it. Hope these answers are useful and make sense. 396 The continuation of the design of structural interior spaces within a total design Feb 23, 2010 1:36 AM and including fixtures furnishing and equipment, interior plantings. 397 90% of all architectural commissions...meaning much more significant work that Feb 23, 2010 1:49 AM affects people's lives than glitzy architectural projects featured in the journals and magazines. 398 Interior architecture is all about understanding the business, uses and activities of Feb 23, 2010 1:53 AM the user. Interior architecture, as we practice it, is to make space a business too and advantage of our clients. While professionally designed, detailed and delivered is important these elements are only important to the degree that they support the activities that take place within the built environment. 399 Interior architecture is the development of three dimensional space within an Feb 23, 2010 1:57 AM architectural shell. Specialized Knowledge - cinema planning requirements; acoustic design requirements; accessibility; structural and MEP requirements; fire/life safety requirements; daylighting/lighting; Material resources; and on and on. Challenges - keeping current with code changes, and code differences by localities. Emerging trends - cost efficiency, planning efficiency and speed of delivery; BIM. Aspirations - to be respected as a profession for the services we provide and the knowledge we bring to the projects; to be better compensated for the work we do. 400 It is all architecture to me. The exterior is relative to the interior and the interior is Feb 23, 2010 2:20 AM responsive to the exterior. Saying there is an interior architecture and an exterior architecture is divisive to what architecture is. Architecture is the whole structure. The Architect is the creator of the complete built environment. divvying-up bits and pieces of the building to varying persons, personality's and perspectives is like having multiple and simultaneous conductors for one orchestra. Nothing good will come from those musicians. Architecture mandates clarity not confusion. Even the most convoluted design has clarity as long as the vision is single in nature. Don't differentiate and be divisive to the holistic nature of architecture. There is no such thing as interior architecture. Architecture is a single thought, it is all encompassing.

47 of 56 Response Text 401 I am interested in dialogue about how best to utilize Building Information Modeling Feb 23, 2010 2:32 AM in the design and production of interior projects, and their relationship to the work of base building architects and engineering consultants. Specifically, I teach Revit to both interior design and architecture students, as well as practice on my own, and have been developing techniques that I would like to compare with other practitioners, and possibly develop best practices. 402 We spend most of our time living and experiencing the interior of buildings which Feb 23, 2010 2:41 AM is what is most significant. 403 All built or designed elements, places and things touching our lives that are safe Feb 23, 2010 2:50 AM from the elements? One way to think of it. 404 The successful creation of healthy, habitable interior space that works in Feb 23, 2010 3:00 AM conjunction with the enveloping structure to create a desirable, sustainable space. 405 I think the body of knowledge specified by CIDA accreditation summarizes what Feb 23, 2010 3:11 AM interior designers/architects should be expected to know. the NCIDQ exam covers what we should be able to do.... 406 ALL architects should be adept at providing complete design services for their Feb 23, 2010 3:16 AM projects. Interior architecture should not be separated out from shell type architecture. Interior designers need to realize that they are NOT architects and need to leave the architecture to architects. 407 Interior architecture is the design or redesign of the interior of buildings, usually Feb 23, 2010 3:34 AM independent of, and, many times, subsequent to the completion of the core and shell of the structure. Most of the specialized knowledge is in two areas, the aplication of ever-evolving building codes, many times for new uses, and the ability to recognize and deal with materials and asswemblies from different eras. Needs and challenges include finding work/clients/gainful employment and responding to new Code issues. Principles, unfortunately, include "how quick and how cheap?" while trends include interior designers trying to both "muscle in on our territory", and once they do, woking to "lock us out". My aspirations are a return to some semblence of normalcy; my expectation is that's it's going to be long and painful . . . 408 The renovation, restoration, reorganization and design of interior environments. Feb 23, 2010 3:34 AM The biggest challenges I find are developing the process of thorough investigation and then understanding the full extent of the existing building that is being built- out or renovated. Learning the most efficient selection of reuse/demolition. I would hope to eventually do more work with restoration of existing facilities, use of green techniques to reuse rather than waste existing built structures. Would also like to work more closely with interior designers to share knowledge between the two disiplines to create spaces. 409 Interior architecture is the design of functional, comfortable and attractive spaces Feb 23, 2010 3:52 AM using the best practices, taking in consideration markets trends, environmental issues , and technology 410 Interior Architecture is arrangement of Elements (furniture, wall & ceiling, lighting Feb 23, 2010 4:11 AM according to the Room utilisation or Function. But provide the basic principles of Interior Architecture for different application and facilities. 411 Interior architecture is the enhancement of interiors and architecture by those Feb 23, 2010 4:12 AM professionals with special capabilities blending the two disciplines into a usable and functional form. With one foot in either discipline being able to speak the two languages in a manner that is understandable to our clients is rare in the professions. We practicioners need to be aware and sensative to the related professions and often need to be the intermediary and arbitrator. We are constantly challanged as being neither by both interior designers and architects. I fully expect to continue to push the cause and understanding to clients and peers in both professions that what we do is both and that neither one is superior or preceeds the other in importance or stature.

48 of 56 Response Text 412 I worry about interior architecture being considered a synonym for interior design. Feb 23, 2010 4:48 AM there should be a discussion topic about whether there are differences in these two terms. 413 Interior Architecture is a Professional Service that can only be provided by an Feb 23, 2010 5:09 AM Licensed Architect! Interior Beauty...with 'Life Safety' and Ultimately...Superior Client Service!!! 414 IA is space defined by visual, tactile or intuitive boundries. Understanding of how Feb 23, 2010 5:21 AM light defines these spatial boundaries and how to use light to enhance, move and define peoples experience of IA. I need greater collaboration between industries and branches of design (lighting, materials, structure, etc.). Our dicipline is defined, unfortunately, by material selection and not by motivation for human omfort and expression. There is a trend, finally, to listen more closely to the users of the spaces we design both before the design of the space, during and after occupation to evaluate how well we applied the ideas and goals our clients have estsablished. I expect this industry to design for human beings, not for the photo that will get you an award. I aspire to create IA that inspires and makes people happy long after I am gone. 415 One of my biggest challenges is that peers tend to forget that I practiced Feb 23, 2010 6:18 AM architecture (building design) for many years prior to focussing more on interior architecture. There are times when I have felt them looking down on me - that is exhibiting an attitude that suggests I'm not really an "architect" or have "lesser ability" because I choose to focus on interior architecture. The dissmissive comment, "Oh! You're an interior designer!" about sums it up! 416 Simple ???? I could write a book! Feb 23, 2010 7:37 AM 417 I am not a Interior Architect. I am interested in discovering more about this Feb 23, 2010 11:29 AM specialty. 418 I would like to know. Feb 23, 2010 1:12 PM 419 Workplace: In this day and age why are some companies opting for perimeter Feb 23, 2010 1:28 PM offices with internal cubicles, instead of leaving the perimeter free for everone to have access to windows? 420 The design of a space on the interior as opposed to the expression of a form on Feb 23, 2010 1:32 PM the exterior. However, the exterior form can, and many times should, be derived from the interior architecture. 421 first and foremost...understanding the clients needs and providing in a form that Feb 23, 2010 1:49 PM complies with all codes a facility that performs to the clients expectations. Also understanding the client needs so well that the professional can provide a solution to problems that the client didn't realize they had. Emerging trends due to the economy are to do the job as economically as possible. Educating about good design and the need to stay in all codes is important. In my experience many clients don't want to hear they they cannot do what they want. 422 Interior Architecture to me is in depth design within an existing structural system; Feb 23, 2010 2:00 PM meaning the only thing that would not be available for easy changes would be an existing structural system. 423 Practicing as an Architect for 38 years, with over 15 of those years specializing in Feb 23, 2010 2:34 PM Interior Architecture (corporate office and healthcare) during the 80's and 90's, I have come to appeaciate the Interior Architect's ability to actually "create space" within a structual framework, and to enhance the experience of space through specialized knowledge of interior detailing, lighting, color and finish. This ability is indeed a specialty within the general field of Architecture. 424 I feel that the interior and exterior of a building should be harmonious. That's why Feb 23, 2010 3:02 PM I've always worked for a firm that designs the entire building, inside and out. The interior architecture often provides more service to the building users and therefore should address their needs of comfort, flexibility, and aesthietic appeal.

49 of 56 Response Text 425 I find it difficult to really come up with "what is an Interior Architect?" An architect? Feb 23, 2010 3:11 PM An Interior designer? It is a little bit of both. It is a bridge which the two feilds merge together which I believe is the future of buidling design. It seems to be quite difficult to find a true "fit" in the industry. 426 Interior architecture is the design of interior environments. I have specialized Feb 23, 2010 3:13 PM knowledge of the workplace. Our needs are to balance the needs of the individual with the expectations of the whole. Managing behavioral change in probably the biggest challenge. Every one wants the best workplace, but what contributes to "best" varies from company to company. Sustainability within the workplace and elevating the indoor environmental quality are emerging trends defining our discipline. 427 Interior Architecture is the reason for the building envelop's existance. Design Feb 23, 2010 3:53 PM principles for both interior and exterior may be similar, but the two diverge on material selection and planning. Trends are determined by the constantly changing nature of business and the way people live in general. 428 My degree is in Interior Architecture from Kansas State University - 26 years ago. Feb 23, 2010 3:53 PM I am a liscensed architect - as Interior Architecture is the process of creating enriching environments that exceed the expectations of the occupants that begin with a thorough program. Too many people want to fast forward into design - without understanding how the occupants interact - their needs - business goals and how each of those components are integral in creating an environment that does more that just solve the surface issues. The environments end up being flexible and more times than not accomodating future growth. What I've found is many of my collegues don't comprehend the importance of programming - and truly listening to the clients needs. Give me a call if you'd like to discuss more. 429 The comprehensive planning and design of spaces within buildings for work, play Feb 23, 2010 4:11 PM and living. We have developed specialty areas in the design of Finacial services facilities, workplace strategy and the impact on the business organization and the need for real estate to satisfy the business goals of our clients. The challenges today are the economy and lack of growth of businesses. The consistant principles are good sustainable design is good for business. My expectation/aspiration is that our building design brethren who do not practice interior architecture truly understand the value that interior architects bring to the problem solving equation because we understand how buildings should be designed from the inside out! 430 Interior architecture is no different than non-interior architecture except that you Feb 23, 2010 4:19 PM don't have to worry about water and air infiltration. 431 Try it and see if it flies--then revise and update as needed Feb 23, 2010 4:47 PM 432 Interior Architecuture: the created interior environment comprised of material Feb 23, 2010 4:48 PM finishes and enclosed spaces in which users carry out their work and other activities. Specialized Knowledge Gained: Interior environments for board care facilities present particular challenges regarding daylight, independence and supervised care. Consistent Principals: People tend to perform better in environments that provide variety, connectivity and different degrees of privacy. Expectations & Asperations: That designed spaces provide optimal conditions for their users; especially in productivity, lighting levels, acoustics and minimal stress. 433 Interior architecture is the space that surrounds us and where we spend most of Feb 23, 2010 4:49 PM our lives. How it affects us is very important. Interior architecture covers colors to volumns, textures to materials. It can alter our moods as we move through space. I have learned to have fun with colors, patterns, and textures in interior finishes. The main challenge I have is in choosing finishes that look good and fit within the project budget. More and more the products used in interiors will need to be reused, have low embodied energy, and have the ability to be remade once their useful life has ended. Man-made chemicals are to be avoided if at all possible.

50 of 56 Response Text 434 Interior Architecture is the practice of creating spaces for habitation and diverse Feb 23, 2010 4:58 PM human purposes. While it shares protection from the elements (a charge of architecture) it transcends range of intimate responses to the human condition. 435 Interior finishes, space development, furniture and fixturing, lighting. Feb 23, 2010 5:51 PM 436 Interior architecture should not be seen as separate from Architecture. Our built Feb 23, 2010 6:01 PM environment suffers from architect's attitudes that interiors are "not something important". Interiors have the most intimate relationship between the built environment and its users. 437 This is not a simple question, but five complicated questions! Where should I Feb 23, 2010 6:06 PM start? 438 Interior Architecture is a means of making a space usable/livable with out an Feb 23, 2010 6:20 PM excessive over kill of meaningless and excessive space that is not utilized.

Specialized Knowledge: Design in plenty of Natural lighting, usable work/living spaces with accessibility to all necessary areas of the space.

Needs & Challenges: The internet affords me all the information on products. However I would like more information on life-cycle/cost ranges of the various products and their installation costs from a third party or testing lab.

Principles & Trends: Sustainable products without the usual cost over runs associated with these products.

Expectations & Aspirations: I would like to see some emerging company replacing or giving LEED some competition. I am sure that would force the price down to a workable level for a form of certification for the project. I would like to see more of an interest in the form of the clients wanting a more hands on approach to the out come of their project. Then I would be able to add Interior Architecture/Design to the bill for the consideration and ideas set forth on a project. Right now, They all seem to side step the idea of actual design work and related charges to that aspect of the project. Other wise, I am having a wonderful time dealing with clients and Architecture. 439 need knowledge of how local and national codes affect a space; provide flexibilty Feb 23, 2010 6:54 PM for clients in their spaces and spend the most bang for their buck 440 Interior Architecture represents the direct experience of the user to the Feb 23, 2010 7:47 PM environment created. Greater appreciation for the ultimate user in the environment being created. Challenges- being taken seriously. We have become the ' the economy of the experience'. Do complete the very best design for my clients while exceeding their expectations and bringing value to the equation. 441 I believe that Interior Architecture is an approach to interior design, whereby the Feb 23, 2010 8:14 PM methodologies & design philosophies similar to those employed during architectural design issues are used to reach a cohesive design solution. In my past experience, I have been fortunate to work with some very talented interior designers & have grown to appreciate the problems they face & the many successful solutions they attain. I have noticed that the interior design community embraced the concepts of sustainable design early and with enthusiasm. 442 Interior Architecture includes all of the contents in the inside of a building (in the Feb 23, 2010 8:17 PM case of a high rise building, minus the core). Thorough knowledge includes (but not limited to): Getting the programming correct, including the setting up of space standards, growth projections, understanding the client's objectives and goals, etc. Building codes (egress, fire-life-safely, Accessibility); Expertise in space planning (comparing building efficiencies, BOMA standards, space adjacencies, etc.). Successful communication (by listening and educating the client) is critical for the success of the project. My biggest challenge is the delicate balance between the client's expectations and the shrinking fees due to the economic climate. I hope this climate changes.

51 of 56 Response Text 443 Interior architecture is the focus and specialization of designing spaces that Feb 23, 2010 9:06 PM people visit, work in, play in and inhabit to start. This requires attention to how people behave and function in space. This is more and more significant since people spend up to 90% of their days indoors. To that more and more attention is being paid to human comfort and sustainable design. 444 The search for clean contemporary finishes, furniture, light fixtures. Hi-tech/Hi- Feb 23, 2010 9:34 PM touch materials. 445 I like to think that Architecture is interior and exterior. For many people though, Feb 23, 2010 9:50 PM engineers take over for the exterior and interior designers, the interior, leaving architects out of the picture altogether. 446 First of all, that's 5 questions, not 3. I'm a licensed architect and have been Feb 23, 2010 9:52 PM practicing a ratio of 75% icommercial interior design, 25% new ground up commercial architecture for over twenty years and could write book about what I know and what I've learned. Our firm has won numerous design awards and is well respected. What I know is that for the past 18 months the corporate T.I. work has kept our firm afloat in this F*%Ked up economy that was ruined by the greedy, high paid Wall Street elitists while the unquestionning government and general public either turned a blind eye or bought into everyones "get rich quick" real estate schemes. Traditional architectural firms are either closing all together or down to just the partners but at least we still have some of our staff, albeit on a four day work week. My challenges now are, paying rent, escalating health insurance, ridiculous PL insurance, and shaking every tree and bush trying to find our next project. My aspiration is to be able to stay in business for a few more months until things turn around and then get our remaining employees back to a 5 day week and maybe a raise which hasn't happened for 2 years. I'm suprised I even took time to answer this given all of my other worries and responsibilities! 447 I am looking for discussion of interior architectural conceptual developments Feb 23, 2010 10:11 PM including a total integration of artistic endeavor with idea making in interior architecture so that they are fully bonded and not just unlinked partners. 448 Int. Arch is the specialized design of the interior portion of a new or existing Feb 23, 2010 11:20 PM building that goes beyond interior finishes to include base building systems, energy use, and environmental concerns.

Emerging trends appear to focus on "green" architecture. I don't understand why the AIA hasn't taken this on with their own educational requirements rather than having another organization form with their own bureaucracy, exams and fees.

The other focus, which is getting to a critical point, is , conservation, and recycling of resources and how it should be incorporated in the design and construction of a project. 449 the interiors and exteriors should be seamless. In our practice we collaborate with Feb 24, 2010 4:22 AM other architects on major new construction projects and do our own renovation projects. Interior architecture is all about function and beauty: making a better place for people to work, learn, live, pray, play, etc. Too much to say in this little box. 450 It relates to the space created inside a structure/building or group of buildings. 52 of 56 Response Text 452 The term Interior Architecture is often applied in describing contracted design Feb 24, 2010 3:17 PM services by architectural firms to design interior spaces independent of architectural services. The term is used rather loosely or inaccurately in both the academic environment and the professional world. In the profession, design services in interior architecture may or may not include furnishing and equipment specification or procurement where as services under the interior contract usually do, or most often do and often this same board activity is then equally used to described Interior Design. Existing descriptive parameters and language outlining the differences between interior design services and interior architectural services are not well defined and are often overlapping. The critical question of the what is interior architecture and what is interior design invokes emotional response and polimic positions depending on the party responding. Thus there seems to be no impartial view or corresponding dialogue. A discussion addressing the difference in the design activity as an action, billed services, or the historical positions concerning the overlaps, the shared and distinct content of service and activities, or in the questions of philosophical discipline parameters has not received much interested. The AIA Interiors Knowledge Committee has only recently begun to bring questions to a discussion level, but mostly as an internal committee and not as an official AIA discussion topic.

Too often the idea of an interior architecture is viewed as a continuation or an extension of the building’s exterior architectural language to the inside, or as the qualified technical’ and ethnical language of the architecture as relating to the ‘whole’ architectural condition. Equally the interior design professional sphere and many academics have focused efforts in developing a pure definition of unique interior design “knowledge” sets as distinct and apart from disciplines of both professional and academic. An interactive dialogue and critical examination to critique the term interior architecture as an understood set of parameters applied in professional practice and the implied academic questions of discipline position is waiting to happen.

Interior Architecture / Interior Design

Different and often subtle conceptual constructs have emerged as conditional parameters to differentiate interior architecture from interior design. This involves architecture as being concerned with more than a building of practical and economical needs, and more than a structure or an enclosure system. Architecture as a discipline has been engaged in the struggle to raise human and spiritual meaning to a higher purpose and focus. An architectural structure is an expression of these principles. This ideal is accomplished through a language of reduction in the creation of an architectural structure. The architectural product – the architecture - is achieved through narrowing abstract notions of ideas and symbols and a program to compose unity of form, space, detail, materials, activities, and so on.

Interior architecture is never removed from the architectural ideal and the products of this design process: the interior of the architecture cannot be separated from the architecture itself. Interior architecture is the condition structured by the architectural preoccupation with a reduction language. The design can reduce the language of the architecture at various scale – from acceptance of the architectural condition and the language developed to express it’s program, to the a complete rejection of all notions of the architecture as the design responds to its own internally assigned program such as a stage set for performance of the program’s script. And, as such the architecture is reduced to providing only minimal environmental controls and structural systems that allow for internal events.

With interior architecture the activity must be housed within the practice of architecture as offering professional architectural services because of the understanding of the shell condition, and the dependence of architecture to derive the resulting design. Again this happens at different scales of services. The only formal writing outlining an interior architecture definition I know of is Kurtich and Eakin’s 1993 book Interior Architecture (interior53 architectureof 56 is applied to the inside as design elements are carried to the exterior, distinguishing a “holistic creation.”), a bit in Malnar and Vodvarka’s Interior Demension, and implied by Stanley Abrercrombie in A Philosophy of Interior Design. There are several new books on interior theory and other interiors publications that also mention the two terms. For me Interior Architecture is about completing myself as an architect by wrapping my creative spirit (as it were) around everything that IS architecture - the exterior AND interior. I can't find a way to separate the two. It's the way I 'grew up' in the profession, working with architects that were practicing interior design AND architecture. I've never been able to separate the two, and after 20 years, why would I? 467 full professional registration and regulation of interior design practice Feb 26, 2010 4:14 PM 468 Interior Architecture is the designed environment where a big percentage of Feb 26, 2010 4:34 PM employees spend most of their time working. We need to lift all of us up rather than tearing down Interior Designers so that we gain a upper hand. I hope to continue my contributions to the profession and to clients who appreciate and understand the value that I can bring to them.
