Program Invocation – Rangmanch by Chhandam Dance Company Raag: Bairagi : Tintal Composer: Pandit Chitresh Das Dancers: Doli Bambhania, Cimeron Agarwal, Ritu Mathur, Nilima Dave, Poonam Narkar Rangmanch, literally meaning “coloring of the stage,” depicts the to consecrate the space and awaken the senses with the ringing of a bell, lighting of a diya, blowing of a conch. Invoking the Hindu trinity – , , Maheshwara – the dancers pay respect to the four corners of the earth.

This dance is about the season of rain. Rainy season is described as the one in which peacock dances to welcome the monsoon while the sky plays the drums and the wind seems like an accompanying string instrument. The item describes ’s plight when Krsna hides her saree and refuses to give it back to her. She pleads with him and finally when she promises to come back, Krsna gives Radha her saree.

Kaliya Daman - Ghat Bhav by Chitresh Das Dance Company Taal: Tintal Composer: Pandit Chitresh Das Dancers: Anjali , Antara Bhardwaj, Labonee Mohanta Ghat Bhav, or the use of expression Abhinaya in storytelling is the oldest form of entertainment. This story told through mime and dance depicts young and friends playing with their favorite wooden ball. When the ball is thrown in the water, brave Krishna is the only one with courage to face the ten-headed serpent, Kaliya, to retrieve the ball and defeat the serpent demon.

Innovations of the – Kathak by Chitresh Das Dance Company Composer: Innovated by Pandit Chitresh Das An innovative technique developed from within the highly rhythmic and mathematical tradition, Kathak Yoga is a unique and virtuosic practice requiring the dancer to integrate mind, body and spirit, with the goal of achieving pure through the dance. The dancer performs rhythmic compositions through footwork, movement and expression while simultaneously reciting the underlying theka (rhythmic structure) and singing the corresponding lehera (rhythmic melody).

Thaat by Chitresh Das Dance Company Taal: Tintal Composer: Pandit Chitresh Das Thaat is a highly stylized tuning of the mind and body. The dancer demonstrates subtle gestures of the wrist, neck, eyes and eyebrows, wrists and breathe, juxtaposed with fast flourishes ending in crisp stances. Thaat explores the given taal (tinal, 16 beat rhythmic cycle) and highlights the blend of both Hindu and Muslim elements, a unique trait of Kathak among ’s classical dances. Participating Schools

Jyoti Kala Mandir Guru Jyoti Rout is the founder director of Jyoti Kala Mandir, College of Indian Classical Arts. She is the recipient of an award from World Arts West for her outstanding choreography of Dasavatara at the Ethnic Dance Festival at San Francisco in 2006. She has also choreographed an item for the 2007 Ethnic Dance Festival. She received Pride of India National Award, Shrishetra Mahari Award from , and Shrestha Odiani.

Tarana Dance Academy, Kathak-Kala Vihar, California Nupur Dance Academy TARANA Dance Academy is a Kathak school founded in 2005 by Pragya Dasgupta, senior disciple of Guru Bandana Sen. Currently the academy has branches in Fremont, Pleasant and San Ramon CA. Kathak Kala Vihar was founded in 2010 by Sangita Nandy who has trained under Guru Bandana Sen. California Nupur Dance Academy was founded in 2006 by Dipanwita Sengupta who is also trained by Guru Bandana Sen. This academy trains students in Kathak, folk dances and Rabindra Nritya. Odissi Vilas : Sacred Dance of India Vishnu disciple of Smt. Jhelum Paranjape founded Odissi Vilas in ____. He then traveled to Orissa for intensive studies with Padmavibhusan Kelucharan Mohapatra. Vishnu has performed in India, Italy, Canada, and the U.S. He has presented hundreds of solo performances and lecture demonstrations.
