In this study, I analyze the critical reception of his works in his home country, where The Gospel According to Jesus Christ (1991) was excluded from participation in the European Literary Prize on ideological grounds, and in the United States and Canada, where Blindness (1995) brought a wave of uniformly positive response until the publication of Cain (2011), perceived negatively as a didactic tool to convince readers of the unviability of Christianity. This examination is framed by Iser’s theory of aesthetic response. More specifically, I focus on the concepts of virtual dimension of the text, passive synthesis, and negation in order to reflect upon the transmission of ideology through the writing of literature, and the impact of the reader’s personal convictions upon interpretation and reception. From the perspective of the reading process espoused by Iser, I argue that, in the case of Portugal, the religious reception of The Gospel According to Jesus Christ and Cain is negative because the reader’s personal convictions compromise the formation of the textual virtual dimension and the processes of passive synthesis and negation. In the case of English-speaking North America, my argument is that Saramago’s anti-religious ideology, offered through didacticism in Cain, changes a scenario of overwhelmingly positive response to negative opinions on the novel. In this case, it is not the reader’s but Saramago’s personal convictions that interfere with the reading process. Saramago’s Works Translated into English 120 ix 1 INTRODUCTION Publicly, José Saramago (1922-2010) was a man of few but profoundly controversial statements, a self-proclaimed Communist, Marxist, atheist, and humanist. The Portuguese writer’s involvement in social causes and the sharp criticism of any form of power -- political or religious -- and of the institutions responsible for its exercise was also transposed to his acclaimed, Nobel Prize-worthy literary creations. This steady literary and social adherence to his convictions undoubtedly consecrated Saramago internationally. This ideology, however, has been the subject of discussion among several interpretive communities, especially in Portugal, to the extent that Adriano Schwartz, a literature professor in Brazil, hopes that the “ideological load” attached to him in his lifetime will gradually become detached from his works after his passing in 2010. Schwartz recognizes that the writer’s self-proclaimed ideology “contaminated” his international -- and national, I would add -- repercussion. Saramago’s insertion into the Portuguese literary scene was and remains turbulent and his position in the canon is controversial and, at times, unaccepted. His 1991 novel O Evangelho Segundo Jesus Cristo1 (The Gospel According to Jesus Christ, 1993) – considered by some critics to be one of his best works – shocked a good portion of Portuguese society. In a traditionally Catholic country, Saramago published a book that portrays Mary not as the venerated virgin of religion, but as a narrow-minded mother of nine children. In the novel, Jesus leaves his house after his father’s death by crucifixion, and begins an apprenticeship with none other than the devil himself, provocatively called 1 From this point on, I will refer to this novel as Evangelho. MONDRIAAN (U NIVERSITY OF PRETORIA ) ABSTRACT This article examines the Kenite tribe, particularly considering their importance as suggested by the Kenite hypothesis. According to this hypothesis, the Kenites, and the Midianites, were the peoples who introduced Moses to the cult of Yahwism, before he was confronted by Yahweh from the burning bush. Scholars have identified the Cain narrative of Gen 4 as the possible aetiological legend of the Kenites, and Cain as the eponymous ancestor of these people. The purpose of this research is to ascertain whether there is any substantiation for this allegation connecting the Kenites to Cain, as well as con- templating the Kenites’ possible importance for the Yahwistic faith. Information in the Hebrew Bible concerning the Kenites is sparse. Traits associated with the Kenites, and their lifestyle, could be linked to descendants of Cain. The three sons of Lamech represent particular occupational groups, which are also connected to the Kenites. The nomadic Kenites seemingly roamed the regions south of Palestine. According to particular texts in the Hebrew Bible, Yahweh emanated from regions south of Palestine. It is, therefore, plausible that the Kenites were familiar with a form of Yahwism, a cult that could have been introduced by them to Moses, as suggested by the Kenite hypothesis. Their particular trade as metalworkers afforded them the opportunity to also introduce their faith in the northern regions of Palestine. This article analyses the etymology of the word “Kenite,” the ancestry of the Kenites, their lifestyle, and their religion.

    Bereshit 2004: The Importance of Questions Thursday evening we concluded the cycle of the fall holidays with the holiday of Simhat Torah, the festive festival when we celebrate the completion of the annual reading of the Five Books of Moses. And so today we inaugurate the cycle of reading the torah from the beginning. No sooner do we complete the book of Deuteronomy, then we start anew and return once again to the very opening words of the book of Genesis. One of the lessons of doing this is to teach us that there is always more to learn, and more wisdom to discern from the Torah. I, for one, am one of those people who does not like to see a movie twice. Once is enough for me. The same is true of books. But when it comes to reading the Torah, that is a different story. There is so much here and so many layers of meaning. Each time I return to the text, I find new insights and treasures. This year is no exception. The dramatic story of the creation of the world as presented in this week’s torah reading is surely familiar to most of us. It is so definite, declarative and certain in its stark simplicity. The issue of the text I would like to explore this morning has to do with the role of questions. It is an example of something I had not previously thought about when reading the opening torah portion, but upon further examination of the text is worth considering.

    Miguel Torga - biography Adolfo Correia Rocha was born on 12th August 1907 in São Martinho da Anta, Portugal. In 1917, when he was a young rebel teenager, he went to a mansion in Porto where he used to work outside and other tasks. But he was fired because of being disobedient. One year later, he was sent to the Seminary in Lamego because his father wanted him to be a priest, although he didn’t want to. There, he studied Portuguese, History, Geography and learnt Latin. That year was remarkable for him. In 1920, he went to work in his uncle’s farm, in Brazil. In 1925 he was sent to Coimbra after his uncle had noticed that he was prodigy boy. Two years later he finished high school and was admitted to the College of Medicine in Coimbra University and at the time he was passionate about literature. While he was in College, he published his first poetry book “Ansiedade”, and collaborated in the “Presença” magazine. He married Andrée Crabbé in 1940 and they had a little girl named Clara Rocha. Miguel Torga was considered the most important Portuguese writer of the 20th century. He used to give free medical appointments to poor people, which demonstrated that he was a well-spoken and good- hearted man. Ave da Esperança Passo a noite a sonhar o amanhecer. The study outlines the sociographic profile of patients on hemodialysis treatment in Portugal through a descriptive study of 3114 chronic renal failure patients. The dominant sociographic profile indicates that participants were male (59%), over the age of 65 (52.54%, M = 67.6), married (58.70%), with a low educational level (1st to 4th grade: 53.18%), and retired (77.62%). They were born in Portugal (89.56%), living in Lisbon (51.48%), living with nuclear families with children (46.47%) and had informal support networks (72.22%). Other social indicators point to vulnerable situations: 8.6% were unemployed, 2.5% were living in a precarious housing situation; 10.45% were displaced patients; 11.37% lived alone; 9.18% had single-parent families; and 10.69% did not have any source of support. Knowledge of sociographic profiles is a determinant of successful social work and social epidemiology in order to develop social and multidisciplinary intervention programs and social policies that promote individual and social well-being of chronic kidney disease patients. For him, the novel is a medium where socio-cultural and political issues are addressed and his voice acts as a didactic language that represents the colonial and postcolonial subjects. Moreover, he illustrates the political ideology in a different way. The representation of the other by a meta-narrative voice is the hallmark of Jose Saramago’s novels. In his novels, he acts as an all-knowing narrator or implied author who tries to transform the society and the Portuguese culture in general. The representation of the other in the novel Blindness is a kind of historical discourse which is articulated as artificial, a constructed category, a power-based and discriminatory construction. Of course, it is communicated through conventional, discursive and narrative strategies. Hence, we find a relation between history and story in these narratives. As so many disaster narratives start, Blindness also begins with a disaster-traffic jam.

    ENG 402: Advanced Placement English Literature & Composition Summer Reading Dear students, Welcome to Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition! You have chosen a challenging, but rewarding path. This course is for students with intellectual curiosity, a strong work ethic, and a desire to learn. I know all of you have been well prepared for the “Wonderful World of Literature” in which we will delve into a wide selection of fiction, drama, and poetry. In order to prepare for the course, you will complete a Summer Reading Assignment prior to returning to school in the fall. Your summer assignment has been designed with the following goals in mind: to help you build confidence and competence as readers of complex texts; to give you, when you enter class in the fall, an immediate basis for discussion of literature – elements like narrative viewpoint, symbolism, plot structure, point of view, etc.; to set up a basis for comparison with other works we will read this year; to provide you with the beginnings of a repertoire of works you can write about on the AP Literature Exam next spring; and last but not least, to enrich your mind and stimulate your imagination. If you have any questions about the summer reading assignment (or anything else pertaining to next year), please feel free to email me ([email protected]).
