    Senate confirms Callista Gingrich as U.S. ambassador to the Holy See WASHINGTON —The Senate confirmed Callista Gingrich as the new U.S. ambassador to the Holy See. Voting late Oct. 16, senators approved her nomination 70-23. More than 20 Democrats joined Republicans in supporting Gingrich, the wife of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, a vocal ally of President Donald Trump. Gingrich, 51, a lifelong Catholic and a former congressional aide, has been president of Gingrich Productions, a multimedia production and consulting company in Arlington, Virginia, since 2007. She was expected to present her credentials at the Vatican in the coming weeks. Gingrich’s associates welcomed the vote. Among them was Msgr. Walter R. Rossi, rector of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, where Gingrich has been a longtime member of the choir. “Callista has been part of our shrine family for two decades and so, as any family rejoices when good news arrives, we rejoice with Callista,” Msgr. Rossi said in an Oct. 17 statement. “Both Callista and Speaker Gingrich are wonderful supporters of our ministry here at Mary’s shrine, most especially our music program. “More importantly, Callista has a great love for the church and our country,” he added. “Her faith is an integral part of her life and I am confident that her faith will be her solid foundation as she enters a new service to church and nation.” The Bethlehem University Foundation wished Gingrich “great success in her new role.” The Gingrichs have been foundation patrons, serving as advisers to its executive director and donors.

    PRESESSION REPORT 2019 PRE-FILED LEGISLATION • House http://www.legis.ga.gov/Legislation/en-US/Prefiles.aspx?Chamber=2 • Senate http://www.legis.ga.gov/Legislation/en-US/Prefiles.aspx?Chamber=1 There were 28 pre-filed pieces of legislation for 2019. While some were on the lighter side – such as naming the judicial center after Governor Nathan Deal and commending the Atlanta Braves 2018 season – some notables include the following: HB 2 – (Rep. Matt Gurtler) Allows certain Georgians to carry a firearm without a permit. HB 8 – (Rep. Debbie Buckner) Exempts certain women’s hygiene products from state sales tax. HR 2 – (Rep. Scot Turner) Prohibits the use of a poll tax in Georgia. HR 6 – (Rep. Michael Caldwell) Provides for term limits for state elected officials. SB 2 – (Sen. Steve Gooch) Allows for EMCs to partner with internet companies to provide broadband service to members. HOT BUTTON ISSUES FOR 2019 Education Throughout the campaign, Governor Kemp presented education as one of his top priorities. Included in this is teacher compensation and a priority on mental health counselors in schools as well as school security. We will also continue to watch and see how the state proceeds with the implementation of the testing pilot program passed in 2018. One complication in education policy in 2019 is a void in leadership in each Chamber. With the retirement of Brooks Coleman in the House and Senator Lindsey Tippins resigning his chairmanship, both committees are currently without a leader. We expect the new chairs to be announced any day now. Rural Georgia Throughout the 2018 Legislative Session and the 2018 Campaign season, we saw a recurring theme in that legislators see the need for reforms that aid rural Georgia.

Sullivan Vice-Chairperson of the State Election Board Dear Secretary Raffensperger and Mrs. Sullivan, As I am sure you have seen over the past month, many Georgians, including my colleagues who have signed this correspondence, have serious concerns about Georgia’s elections. As we approach a critical election on January 5, 2021, it is clear that Georgia voters must have confidence in the election process going forward. To that end, below you will find two common-sense suggestions: a rule that should be promulgated by the State Election Board (the “SEB”) and additional resources of which the Office of the Secretary of State (the “SOS”) or the SEB could take advantage. I. Absentee Ballot Application and Mail-In Absentee Ballot Signature Review Process. As the process currently stands, when a voter wishes to vote early by mail, they submit an Absentee Ballot Application (“Application”) either through the mail or online. When a local Board of Registrars (the “BOR”) receives a paper Application, typically, a single employee of the BOR is responsible for the initial review of a signature on a paper Application. If that paper Application is accepted, the BOR mails an Absentee Ballot to the voter. The process for reviewing signatures on the external envelope of a returned Absentee Ballot is the same – a single employee of the BOR is allowed to “approve” a signature without oversight by other employees or independent observers.

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com The half-sister of former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Newt Gingrich, whose record on glbtq rights is abysmal, Candace Gingrich-Jones is an out and proud lesbian activist who serves as a spokesperson and Senior Youth Outreach Manager for the Human Rights Campaign. Candace Gingrich-Jones is separated from her brother by twenty-three years in age and most of the breadth of the American political spectrum in philosophy. By the time of her birth, her brother was already gone from the parental home--married (to his former high school geometry teacher), a father, and living in Georgia. In 1942 Kathleen Daugherty and Newton C. McPherson, Jr.--both in their teens--were wed. The unhappy union lasted only a few months but produced a child, Newton Leroy. Two years after the divorce, Daugherty married Robert Gingrich, who adopted her son and gave him his family name. Newt Gingrich has chosen to pronounce it with a final "ch" sound (to avoid having to correct constituents), whereas the rest of the family uses a "k" sound that is closer to the authentic pronunciation of the German name. A career Army officer, Robert Gingrich took his growing family with him to postings in the United States and Europe. Daughters Susan and Roberta were born in 1948 and 1950, respectively. The baby of the family, Candace, came along much later, on June 2, 1966. Shortly after Candace's birth, her father was deployed to Vietnam.
