THE LAKE OF THE WOODS

January 2020 Vol. 2020 Issue 1 Happy New Year Dr. John W. Howe, Senior

“The land you are about to enter …is a land of hills and valleys…a land that your God looks after. His eyes are always on it, from the beginning of the year to its end.” (Deuteronomy 11:10-12)

After forty years of wandering in the wilderness, the Children of Israel stood on the threshold of the unknown. The Land of Promise would not be easily won; battles as well as blessings lay ahead. But the Lord promised to go with them as their shield and protector. At the beginning of a new year we are reminded that we, too, stand before the unknown. What will 2020 hold for any of us? What surprises, changes, needs, disappointments and delights will be ours in the next twelve months? The only thing we know for certain is there will be both hills and valleys! The terrain will sometimes be rugged and sometimes refreshing. May I urge you to include among your resolutions a commitment to begin each day by asking Jesus to share it with you. If it is not already your practice, set your alarm a few minutes earlier, and spend those extra minutes in scripture, prayer, and enjoying the Lord. Jesus said the Father is seeking such time with us (John 3:24) Try reading a different translation of the from the one you ordinarily use. Let the freshness of a modern translation startle you with new clarity. I suggest the New Living Translation or The Message. Ask God to speak to you, then read a paragraph or two. Notice: Is there acommand to obey, a promise to claim, an example to emulate, a principle to live by, a sin to forsake, a truth to contemplate? Ask Jesus to show you specific ways to apply what you have just read to whatever lies before you this very day. Ask him to give you a sense of what he wants to accomplish. And then let him help you accomplish it! My prayer for you is the same as my prayer for myself: that we will come to see him more clearly, love him more dearly, and follow him more nearly in 2020.

My love to you in him, Reflections and the Future Rev. Adam Colson, Senior Associate Pastor

We fed homeless individuals through the Thurman Brisben Ministry and we helped repair homes in our community. We also welcomed new friends into our RISE Adult Special Needs Ministry . 2 Family and Marriage Rev. Jordan Medas, Associate Pastor

The Bible has a lot to say about the family and marriage. In the opening chapters of the Bible, we see the first relationship between two humans, that of marriage, not of mere friendship, not of twitter followers and not of Facebook friends, but of marriage between man and woman. Paul elaborates on the significance of marriage in his letter to the Ephesians, charging husband and wife to “be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ.” (Ephesians 5:21) The relationship between man and woman finds its significance, meaning and motivation in our relationship to Christ. Going further, Paul charges husbands to “love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” (vs. 25)

God’s plan of salvation and being a blessing to all nations is intended to radiate through a marriage and passed on to children. Deuteronomy 6, the key chapter of our Young Families ministry here at LOWC, instructs parents to “Recite [God’s Word] to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise.” (Deuteronomy 6:7). In other words, keep talking to your kids about God, His Word, His Son, His work, His glory, His splendor. (Singles, I’m not leaving you out. The message of God’s plan for His people to only know him through marriage is clearly not the case. See 1 Corinthians 7)

Unfortunately, in our society, marriage is seen as a “trial period” of togetherness with many entering into it with one foot in, one foot out. Many don’t see marriage as a God ordained ; sacred, holy, inviting God’s blessing of grace and mercy. Many want, as Mylon LeFevre says, Holy matrimony. However, they’re not open to invite the “Holy” into their marriage.

In the hope of strengthening marriages in our church and community, LOWC will be hostng a 6-week study on “The Meaning of Marriage” by Timothy Keller. These classes will be held every Wednesday everning beginning January 8th and continue through February 19th.

“In this six-session, video-based Bible study, Timothy Keller, along with Kathy, his wife of forty years, draws a profound portrait of marriage from the pages of Scripture that neither idealizes nor rejects the institution but points us back to the relationship between God and man. The result is a vision for marriage that is refreshingly frank and unsentimental, yet hopeful and beautiful.”

This study is for singles (yes, believe it or not singles), couples considering marriage and those who have been married recently or for many years.

Hope to see you there! Jordan

A new year brings exciting new events for Children’s Ministry at LOWC. We are starting the year off with a bang and begin with our preparation and planning for VBS 2020. This year’s theme is Rocky Railway, Jesus’ power pulls us through.

When we begin to think about planning for the big event we have many questions… The biggest of those questions is: Is it worth it? Is the time spent planning, the cost involved and the manpower it takes to put on an event of this magnitude.

The answer is YES!!!

In a recent article, written by Landry Holmes in the Kidzmatter magazine for children’s ministry leaders, 60% of adults attended VBS growing up. From that 60%, 9 out of 10 report having memories of a positive experience while attending. (Winter 2019, Issue 67).

We want to create that positive experience by evangelizing to the children in The Lake of the Woods community. If that memory is created by sharing the Good News with each and every child that comes to VBS, we give them that opportunity to then carry it forward and share Jesus with their friends, family, and neighbors.

Don’t miss this opportunity to share the love of Jesus and bring a smile to a child’s face and heart this Summer. Come out and join us on Monday, January 13 to plan for a fun and exciting week at VBS.

We will meet at 6pm in Discovery Zone to hear about news, prep and planning.

Contact Mandy Robinson at [email protected] for more information.

10 Women’s Guild January Programs By Julie Phend, Member

Happy New Year from the Women’s Guild! We hope you will join us this January for some very special speakers, good food and fellowship. Guild meets the first and third Thursday of every month from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in Friendship Hall. Each meeting consists of a short devotion, prayer, and a featured speaker, followed by a simple meal.

Here’s What’s Coming Up:

On January 2, our featured speaker will be Marilyn Marsden. Marilyn will share some of her life experiences as a pastor’s wife, early Guild member, and author of two devotional books written in her nineties. She is the mother of Susan Gill, a LOW Church member.

On January 16, Celine Baker will share how the Lord developed the idea of the Creative Reflections ministry and how in following His plan, she and her husband Jerry have been able to help finance a medical clinic in North Kenya and drill four water wells in East Africa.

Celine and Jerry Baker moved to Lake of the Woods last year. Céline started painting soon after she and Jerry were married in 1998. Celine‘s passion is to paint vibrant colors and themes that express the beauty of God‘s magnificent creation—a passion that served as the inspiration for CREATIVE REFLECTIONS. Proceeds from sales of her art have helped finance humanitarian projects in East Africa. Her desire is to bring spiritual and natural water to those in need.

January Service Project: In January, the Guild will hold a “sheet shower” to benefit the Brisben Center, which houses the homeless. Their need for twin size sheets and blankets is great. All women are welcome at Women’s Guild, regardless of church affiliation. Registration is not necessary, and there is no cost to attend. However, if you need childcare, please contact the church at 972-9060 by the Monday preceding the Guild meeting.

Come—warm up your winter with Women’s Guild!

12 New Class Offered for Chaplains and Clinic Volunteers

In this theological reflection on illness, healing, and provider-patient (or chaplain-patient) relationship, we will attempt to bridge the sometimes-disparate worlds of medicine and faith, of high technology and ultimate concern. We will look at the intrinsic connectedness underlying all medical encounters, and the difficulties and riches of using scripture as a moral resource. We will discuss the importance of interpreting the lives of the suffering as meaningful and ongoing stories - stories that require all of us to respond in healing ways. Medicine as Ministry is a challenge to rethink the purposes of what we do in our medical ministries - and to better discern the human condition. Course offered Wednesdays in January at 7pm, starting Wed the 8th, Room 210/211. To register, call the church office or contact Pastor Colson. Cost of the class is $20.

Begins Wednesday, Feb 26th with Service in the Sanctuary. Soup suppers and speaking series run March 4th through April 1st.

Walking by the Sea of Galilee Jesus called to Peter and Andrew telling them to “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men”. What does it mean to be a “fisher of men”? How do we fish for people? Using Jesus’ words and his and the disciples example we will examine Jesus’ call. We will discover what is required to be a fisher of men, the tackle needed to be a fisher of men, and how to land the catch after we have caught souls for Christ. This 5 week series will not only present the information in a fun and engaging way, but it will also motivate those taking the class to step out into the community and engage their neighbors with the Gospel of Christ.
