Dear Travelers and Friends Dear Travelers and Friends, Thank you for your interest in our vacations for 2017 and the first half of 2018. This is Able Trek Tours’ 26th year of providing vacations for people with special needs. We feel so fortunate to be a part of these positive travel experiences. We’ve traveled extensively throughout the United States and experienced the unique cultures of many international destinations. We‘ve marveled at some of the planets most picturesque settings and seen some of the most entertaining shows in the world. However, all of these vacation experiences pale in comparison to you, our Travelers. Our staff members thoroughly enjoy being a part of sharing the world of travel with our Customers. Our vacations are designed to enlighten and expand each Traveler’s view, to encourage Travelers to discover and pursue leisure interests, to increase Traveler’s self-confidence, and of course to HAVE FUN! Our vacations are also designed to promote independence and choice, with safety as our number one priority. We take very seriously the fact that Travelers work tirelessly for, and look so forward to, our vacations. We will continue to work very hard to make each vacation special for each and every Traveler. We hope you will join us again, or for your first time, as we experience what we feel is an essential part of a well-rounded life…….VACATIONS. Sincerely, Don Douglas Founder/Director ABLE TREK TOURS, INC. **************************************** WHO ARE ABLE TREK TRAVELERS? Individuals who need assistance vacationing are encouraged and welcome to travel with Able Trek Tours. This includes individuals with developmental disabilities, the elderly, individuals with a mental health condition, and others. Most Travelers are individuals with mild to moderate developmental disabilities. Travelers must exhibit good social behavior, have no major medical concerns, be at least 16 years old, and display appropriate behavior toward property, themselves and others. Typical staff to Traveler ratio is 1:3 or 1:4. If a Traveler requires more assistance and/or supervision we MUST be informed of such needs ahead of time. TRIP FEES INCLUDE Staff supervision, transportation from pick-up/drop-off sites, listed attractions, lodging, taxes, an Able Trek t-shirt or hat, a group photo, and many meals are included in the trip fee. Almost every trip includes breakfast and the evening meal each day. 1 TRAVELERS USING WHEELCHAIRS: We have accommodations for up to two Travelers who use wheelchairs on most trips. It is our experience that nearly all Travelers who use a wheelchair require Traveler specific, “specialized” care. Their caregivers must be both physically capable of and trained in the techniques of transferring and lifting. In addition, most Travelers who utilize wheelchairs have very individual and specific personal care needs – needs that can only be properly met by a caregiver who has experience with that Traveler. In order to properly and safely accommodate Travelers who use wheelchairs, we have adopted the following policy: 1) We require that Travelers who require a wheelchair to ambulate bring their own (1:1) personal aid with them on trips. To help make this policy more affordable, the personal caregiver will travel at ½ the cost. The Traveler will pay the regular rate (double or single occupancy – see #2) and their aid will be 50% of that rate. 2) Travelers who require fully accessible lodging accommodations (roll-in showers, wide door entrances, grab bars in bathroom, etc.) are “generally” required to pay the “Single/ADA” rate. The reason for this policy is that most hotel’s ADA accessible rooms have only one bed. We do our best to find hotels with ADA rooms that have two beds. If a Traveler who uses a wheelchair and their own personal caregiver choose to share a bed they can base the price of the trip on the “Double” rate. On the rare occasion where we can find accessible rooms with two beds we will adjust the rate accordingly. Please contact us with any questions about this policy. STAFFING ON TOURS All vacations are supervised by our owner, Don Douglas, and/or at least one Tour Leader employed by Able Trek Tours. Before establishing Able Trek Tours in 1992, Don was the Executive Director of Wisconsin Badger Camp, an organization that offers recreational camping/outdoor experiences to people with developmental disabilities. All other staff members are carefully screened and selected volunteers and/or qualified paid staff. Many of our staff are social workers, teachers, group home staffers, and other qualified and experienced people. Typical staff to Traveler ratio is 1:3 or 1:4. If a Traveler requires more assistance and/or supervision we MUST be informed of this need ahead of time. Please be aware that care/supervision on vacations is typically more intensive or demanding than in the home setting. We will do our best to accommodate a Traveler’s needs in excess of our normal staff supervision. However, if a Traveler requires 1:2 or 1:1 supervision an extra fee will be required. In some instances we will require that Travelers bring their own staff. As stated previously, this is the policy with most Travelers who use a wheelchair to ambulate. PERSONAL ESCORTS At times Travelers and caregivers simply do not feel comfortable attending a vacation without a familiar face along. This situation has been common for Travelers who may need more assistance than our normal 1:3/4 ratios and many Travelers who use wheelchairs. We welcome, encourage, and will at times require that personal escorts join us. The cost for such an arrangement (for BOTH participants) is typically 150% or 1 ½ times the cost of the indicated rate. For example, the Door County & Green Bay trip (May 30 – June 2, 2017) would cost $1,387.50 ($925 X 1.5) for DOUBLE accommodations. Please call for guaranteed prices. 2 FREE WORKING VACATION OPPORTUNITY – Group home staff, caregivers, case managers, etc. if you sign three or more people up for a trip you can go for free as a chaperone. Contact Able Trek Tours for more information. PICK-UP/DROP-OFF LOCATIONS Virtually every vacation offers pick-up and drop-off sites in Dubuque, IA, Platteville, Madison, Milwaukee, Stevens Point, Allenton, Waupaca, Appleton, Oshkosh, Fond du Lac and Wisconsin Dells. Additional common rendezvous sites include: La Crosse, Beloit, Tomah, East Troy, Johnson Creek and Rockford, IL. Pick-up/drop-off sites are indicated in italics in each tour description. • Disney Cruise Line Fun Facts
Disney Cruise Line Fun Facts Uniquely Disney • The Disney ships are painted in Mickey Mouse-inspired colors – black hull, white superstructure, yellow trim and two giant red funnels, each with the Disney Cruise Line Mickey Mouse logo. • Disney Cruise Line was the first cruise line to have yellow lifeboats, instead of the traditional regulation orange. Disney was granted special permission from the U.S. Coast Guard to paint the lifeboats yellow, to keep with the special color theming of the ship. • The Disney Magic was built in two halves… one hundred miles apart! Part of the ship was constructed in Ancona, Italy then towed 100 miles to meet the stern in Marghera (just outside Venice) to be perfectly joined and welded together. • Disney Cruise Line ships use the iconic first seven notes of the “When You Wish Upon a Star” song melody as their horn signals. • Disney ships are the only cruise ships to have five captains – the ship’s captain, Captain Mickey, Captain Minnie, Captain Hook and Captain Jack Sparrow. • Measuring 964 feet in length, the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder are each longer than Main Street U.S.A at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. At 1,115 feet, the Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream are longer than the height of the Eiffel Tower in Paris and longer than the height of New York City’s famous Chrysler Building. • The anchor on the Disney Magic weighs 28,200 pounds – about the same as three full-grown elephants. • On a special night aboard most Disney cruises, the “Pirates IN the Caribbean” deck party features a spectacular pyrotechnics performance – fireworks at sea like only Disney can do! Guest Experience • Eighty-eight percent of the staterooms on the Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream and more than 70 percent of staterooms on the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder have ocean views.

  • Rock-A My Soul Is a Most Engaging Handbook for All Whose Faith Is Intertwined with Popular Music
“Rock-a My Soul is a most engaging handbook for all whose faith is intertwined with popular music. In friendly prose for seekers of all kinds, David Nantais shows that concert halls and music collections are the postmodern mangers where new and enduring spiritual identities are being born. And to this scene of new birth he comes bearing guitars, drums, bass—and a vivid appreciation for the importance of mystery and mystical experience. An impassioned traveling companion!” — Tom Beaudoin Associate Professor of Theology Fordham University “A tension between the worldly and the spiritual has existed in rock ’n’ roll since its foundations in African-American spirituals, gospel, and blues music. But for Catholic drummer Nantais, the very music often feared by religious folk has served as both balm and outlet to help him understand God. In this short, first-person musing, Nantais argues that ‘theology can be done through music,’ encouraging Christians to see rock ’n’ roll as a ‘mode of theological expression.’ Setting aside contemporary Christian music (which he says is not the only way to marry rock and religion), he argues that mainstream rock has many virtues: community building and transcendent elements, meditative qualities, expression of emotion. Nantais admits to some less edifying aspects of rock (e.g., segregated crowds at rock music venues, ties to consumerism). He also chooses not to address a major sticking point for some—offensive lyrics— and so may not be able to convince every reader of rock’s merits. Despite that, his enthusiasm for mix tapes and chord progressions is infectious. Christians will learn to find God in a rock concert, and lovers of all things drum and guitar will find spiritual validation.” — Publishers Weekly “David Nantais is, hands down, one of the best young writers on Christian spirituality: inviting, inventive, and insightful.

summer2014 • Volume23 • Number2 What does it really mean to be Happy? If you’re the by-the-book (or Wikipedia) type, it means you’ve achieved “a mental or emotional state of well-being characterized by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy.” If you’re an animated Dwarf, it means you live with six friends, you needn’t a mustache to complete your beard and you aren’t afraid to accentuate your belly by fastening a belt over your brightly colored shirt. This sunny summer edition of Disney Files Magazine is fi lled with stuff that makes me Happy, and my eagerness to share it with you has me somewhere between contentment and intense joy. I’m Happy, for example, to see two of my favorite resorts in the neighborhood get interior facelifts that give warm, woodsy themes a cool, contemporary edge (pages 3-6). I’m Happy anytime I get to sit down with one of the most beloved Cast Members in our community – an ageless gentleman whose passion for spreading happiness is nothing short of extraordinary (pages 7-8). I’m Happy to daydream about paradise (page 9), watch an attraction concept become real (page 19) and see an animated fi lm honor heroes who tend to fl y under the radar (page 24). I’m Happy to see faces on repurposed trash (page 14), barbecued meats on my plate (pages 16 and 21) and Marty’s memories on our pages (25-26). • An American History of Rock and Roll F
Created in collaboration with Los Angeles United School District teacher Brian Fritch, “An American History of Rock and Roll” is a High School course drawing entirely upon the materials freely available at Teachrock.org. The course integrates the history of the United States from the 1950s on with the history of American popular music. In taking the course, students consider how genres such as Rock and Roll, Pop, Folk, Latin, and Hip Hop have both reflected and informed the cultural, social, and political developments that have occurred in the past 7 decades of U.S. History. The course is divided into four chronological units, with each unit containing approximately 20 media-rich lessons from TeachRock.org. The course culminates in a project-based capstone activity in which students teams create their own short documentary film. The course will span 1-2 semesters, depending on how many lessons the teacher seeks to use in each unit. Teachers can also supplement the curriculum with additional collections TeachRock offers. For instance, lessons from CNN Soundtracks Collection can be drawn upon to teach more recent moments in U.S. History, from Hurricane Katrina to 9/11 to the Stonewall Rebellion to the #BlackLivesMatter movement. The Music that Shaped America Curriculum focuses on U.S. History before the 20th Century, with particular focus on issues of slavery and abolition, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. TeachRock’s Rumble: The Indians who Rocked the World collection examines U.S. History from the Native American point of view, with lessons on Wounded Knee, the Red Power Movement, and the history of cultural appropriation.
