Uniform Smoke Thursday 12 March, 7pm Patrick Staff presents an evening long installation, with film screenings and readings. This event is inspired by the moving image archive of the Tom of Finland Foundation, where Staff spent time digitising material as a volunteer in 2014. It includes archive footage alongside a broader selection of queer encounters through film and video, with work by Bad Brad, Rhys Ernst, Mariah Garnett and Patrick Staff. Thursday 19 March, 7pm A discussion marking the launch of Chisenhale Gallery’s online archive, 1986-1990, chaired by Royal College of Art Curating Contemporary Art student Sophie Oxenbridge, who has been digitising the archive. Speakers include Siobhan Davies, presenting RePlay, an evolving dance and choreographic digital archive; Laura McLean talking about her work as curator of the Contingent Movements Archive; and writer Naomi Pearce introducing the collaborative research project and book After Butler’s Wharf: Essays on a Working Building. Please visit chisenhale.eventbrite.co.uk to reserve a place. ‘the foundation’ patrick staff The Foundation is a new film installation by Patrick Staff premiering at Chisenhale Gallery and co-commissioned with Spike Island, Bristol; Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane; and Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver. Staff explores queer intergenerational relationships negotiated through historical materials. The film combines footage shot at the Tom of Finland Foundation in Los Angeles – home to the archive of the erotic artist and gay icon and a community of people that care for it – with choreographic sequences shot within a specially constructed set. The legacy of Finnish artist Touko Laaksonen (1920-1991), better known as Tom of Finland, spans multiple generations; his work made a considerable impact on masculine representation and imagery in post- war gay culture. The foundation was established in 1984 by Tom and his friend Durk Dehner to preserve his vast catalogue of homoerotic art, whilst endeavouring to – to quote the organisation’s website – ‘educate the public to the cultural merits of erotic art and in promoting healthier, more tolerant attitudes about sexuality.’ Today, Durk runs the organisation and lives in the house, along with a handful of other employees and artists. Rather than focusing on Tom of Finland’s work, Staff’s film evokes the foundation as a set of relations. He explores how a collection is formed and constituted and the communities that produce and are produced by a body of work. Through observational footage of the house, its collections and inhabitants, the foundation is revealed as a domestic environment, a libidinal space, an archive, an office and a community centre; a private space which is also the home of a public-facing organisation and the source of a widely dispersed body of images. Staff foregrounds his own identity and his personal dialogue with the different communities of the foundation to consider how ideas of inheritance and exchange are complicated by gender identity and presentation; in this context, of a younger trans person within a context dominated by the overtly masculine, male identity of an older generation. The documentary footage of the foundation is intercut with a series of scenes, which are shot in a set incorporating aspects of the building’s architecture and technologies and operate within the register of experimental theatre. In these sequences, featuring his interactions with an older actor, Staff uses choreography and props to explore the body as a site for the construction and deconstruction of subjectivities. Through a varied, interdisciplinary and often collaborative body of work comprising film, dance and performance, Staff considers ideas of discipline, dissent, labour and the queer body, frequently drawing on the historical narration of counter-culture, radical activity and alternative forms of community building. This new work is the product of several years’ research and dialogue with the Tom of Finland Foundation and is Staff’s most ambitious and large-scale project to date, bringing together languages of film and live performance with sculptural materiality to explore the body as a political, living archive. The Foundation explores the complexities of cultural artifacts and collective identities, via an examination of ownership, appropriation, responsibility and desire. Following its premiere at Chisenhale Gallery there will be subsequent presentations of The Foundation at Spike Island, Bristol in July 2015, Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane in late 2015 and Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver in early 2016. Patrick Staff (born 1987, UK) lives and works in London and Los Angeles.     Tom of Finland: Love and Liberation 6 March – 28 June 2020 The UK’s first public exhibition dedicated solely to gay cultural icon Tom of Finland. A timely celebration, showing previously unseen works on the centenary of his birth. “My aim is not to create an ideal but to draw beautiful men who love each other and are proud of it.” On 6 March 2020, House of Illustration will open the UK’s first public solo show dedicated to gay cultural icon and prolific artist Tom of Finland (born Touko Laaksonen), in partnership with Tom of Finland Foundation and the Finnish Institute in London. This timely exhibition, will celebrate the artist whose homoerotic visions had a profound effect on gay communities in Europe and North America during a pivotal period in their history and continue to have an immeasurable influence on popular culture today. Tom of Finland: Love and Liberation will display 40 works on paper produced from the 1960s to the 1980s, both before and after homosexuality was decriminalised in much of Europe and the U.S. It will include early drawings of men fighting that constituted the only legal way to show physical contact between men before decriminalisation, as well as illustrations from his iconic Kake comics and rare linocuts produced in very limited editions. Many of these works, on loan from the Los Angeles-based Tom of Finland Foundation, will be exhibited to the public for the first time. In his meticulously staged idiosyncratic private work, Mizer revealed himself as a conscientious artist of intimacy and depth, a visionary stylist of the male-on-male gaze as it was refracted through a culture suffused with masculine iconography, which yet stymied and redirected the vectors of desire. The objects and photographs here show Mizer to be the progenitor of a new kind of devotional work that honors the kaleidoscopic typology of desire in the final stages of the underground era, while approaching it simultaneously as an improvised and mesmerizing ethnography. Mizer founded the Athletic Model Guild studio in 1945 when American censorship laws permitted women, but not men, to be photographed partially nude, so long as the result was “artistic” in nature. In 1947 he was wrongly accused of having sex with a minor and subsequently served a year-long prison sentence at a desert work camp in Saugus, California. But his career was catapulted into infamy in 1954 when he was convicted of the unlawful distribution of obscene material through the US mail. The material in question was a series of black and white photographs, taken by Mizer, of young bodybuilders wearing what were known as posing straps — a precursor to the G-string.

Contemporary Art Centre, Riga / There may be a kind of bent understanding of things. We can be bent on something, like crossing the lawn in a park on the diagonal. A drawing can be criss-crossed in red pencil, and calligraphy can be drilled into children by making them to do exercises in ruled notebooks with diagonal lines. A queer instance of the diagonal is the slash. In and of itself the slash is far from the norm. In street address numeration it both combines and separates adjacent buildings. Place it between terms; it’s like a break in the lexicon and points to the indefinable, to what's in-between. The slash bears witness to the union of space and time, measured in km/h. And there are texts where it appears as a confusing alternative in the and/or format. The slash is the arbiter of the binary world and the lost dimension in three’s-a-charm. Side streets connect parallels with a slash, horizontal crossbeams hold up unsteady constructions, and much of the muscle tissue adjoined to the skeleton is crosshatched. In Latvian, the word šķērss – something that is opposite to straight, holds considerable potential as an equivalent to queer, which in the English-speaking world was introduced in the 1980s, when describing one’s own personal take on the peculiarities of one's sexuality.

I told him he had a priceless treasure chest of male leather history that shaped who we are today as a global Leather Fraternity. From 1975 to 1999, Drummer helped create the leather culture it reported on. Drummer promoted leather-bar events, and encouraged men to manifest their leather personali- ties in regional contests leading up to the annual Mr. Drummer contest at the quiet local Folsom Fair that exploded with interna- tional noise when Drummer began inviting global subscribers to fly in for the public-sex street orgy. Drummer helped thousands of leatherfolk come out. Facing the AIDS emergency, Drummer rebranded itself to make safe sex hot by outing new fetish role- playing free of fluids under publisher Tony DeBlase who created the Leather Flag. In 1977, kinky kismet got me hired as found- ing San Francisco editor-in-chief of this international juggernaut so epic in impact it was bigger than any one of us, including publishers, editors, and contributors like Tom of Finland, Rex, Samuel Steward, Oscar Streaker Robert Opel, and my lover Rob- ert Mapplethorpe. HOW WE DID WHAT WE’RE GOING TO DO Drummer was a revolutionary idea in motion. As one of the first three slick magazines after Stonewall, Drummer dared portray our desires to organize our thoughts to inform our practices. It was a first draft of leather history.

Mizer was one of the most significant figures of twentieth century homoerotic art and was a celebrated pioneer in developing the visual language for post-war gay culture. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery and will include over 30 never-before- exhibited images from the Bob Mizer archive. The show runs from June 23 to August 25, 2018 with an opening reception on Saturday, June 23 from 6 to 8 pm at the M+B Photo exhibition space located at 1050 North Cahuenga Boulevard in Hollywood. “I feel more strength now than ever before, but this strength, this driving energy, shall be carefully bridled and directed with wisdom . My ambition is everything — pleasure, physical sensations mean nothing compared to great accomplishments.” - Bob Mizer in a letter to his mother from a prison work camp, May 28, 1947. Born in Hailey, Idaho in 1922, Mizer began his exploration and documentation of the male physique in 1945 when, at the age of twenty-four, he photographed the gymnast Forester Miller in the parlor of the home he shared with his mother. Soon after, Mizer began photographing in and around Muscle Beach, the infamous park outfitted with exercise equipment just south of the Santa Monica Pier. Mizer saw no need for discretion and soon befriended the bodybuilders. He learned of the men’s eagerness for photographs of themselves and, convincing his mother to surrender her parlor as a studio, offered free prints in exchange for modeling.
