Understanding our world From Science Parks to Innovation Districts 2 Introduction Research and development (R&D) drives advanced economies worldwide. It is this that provides the foundation for the new knowledge, products, and processes that, in turn, become new industries, create jobs and serve as the source of economic growth. Key areas for R&D are in what is called the knowledge and technology industries (KTI) that consist of high technology manufacturing (e.g. aircraft, spacecraft, pharmaceuticals) and knowledge-intensive services (commercial business, financial and communication services). KTI, which account f or 27% of the worldwide Gross Domestic Product (GDP), are extremely important to the United States, in particular, representing 40% of the U.S. GDP. In fact, the U.S is the world’s largest KTI producer – contributing 27% of the total HT manufacturing and 32% of the KI services.1 In order to grow and maintain these positions, the United States, like its peers in Europe and Asia who are also large contributors, has built an extensive R&D infrastructure composed of three strong players: the private sector, the public sector and universities. In terms of expenditures and numbers of employees, the private sector dominates the R&D enterprise, but the university sector, largely funded by the US government, is also an important component both directly and indirectly.

    BANKRUPT GOLF COURSES: AN HISTORICAL ANALYSIS AND STRATEGIES FOR REPURPOSING by BLAKE JEFFREY CONANT (Under the Direction of Ron Sawhill) ABSTRACT More than 800 golf courses have closed since 2003 and approximately 1,000 to 2,500 are projected to close in the next decade. Many of these courses are repurposed as high-end mixed-use development, high-density residential, or big-box development. The sustainable benefits the golf course once provided either diminish or leave completely. As our countryʼs 21st Century needs shift towards food, water, and energy security, bankrupt golf courses can offer repurposing opportunities to plan for those needs. The goal of golf course repurposing should be to provide similar or greater sustainable benefits as the golf course once did. Understanding how that land can be sustainably repurposed is vital for local communities, environments, and economies to thrive in the 21st Century. This thesis will offer suggestions, strategies, and solutions for repurposing bankrupt golf courses that have yet to be implemented in the United States. A paper survey was mailed on March 8th and responses were tabulated through April 16th. 100% of respondents live within one mile of PHGC. Results from this survey are referred to in this report as the “mailed survey” or “mailed invite.” The mailed survey is statistically valid. 2. The second survey was online only and was open to the general public. These results were tabulated from March 25th through April 30, 2021. 57% of respondents reported that they did not live near the golf course site. The results from this survey are referred to in this report as the “online survey” or “open online.” 3 Points of Interest Points of Interest: Land Use Allocation . 68% of mailed survey respondents allocated some portion of the site to parks and 61% favored dedicating a portion to open space. No other use garnered more than 50%. 70% of mailed survey respondents also favored some development. 22% favored only green space and 8% favored only development-oriented uses. The Methods HIA includes a report on the health impacts of the Existing Conditions alternative park and golf course plans as well as research Literature Review regarding high priority focus areas that were identified by Health Equity Analysis the Community Advisory Committee, including: physical Recommendations activity, social cohesion (community connectedness), Monitoring safety, and environmental health. Evaluation Conclusion Key findings from this Health Impact Assessment include: Obesity The area surrounding the golf course lies within the Fitchburg census block group (014.03.2) ranked #1 for obesity. Nearly 1 in 4 (24%) children ages 2-17 in this area are obese. Within the #2 ranked census block group (014.02.3), 46% of children ages 2-17 were overweight/obese. Mothers giving birth residing in the area also show a higher rate of obesity (30%), when compared to the rest of Fitchburg (21%) and Dane County (22%). Physical Activity Residents and stakeholders perceive there is inadequate open green space and play space for the neighborhood. Residents and stakeholders perceive that access to physical activity opportunities outside of the neighborhood is limited due to language and transportation barriers. Residents living in the Pines apartment complex are perceived to be particularly isolated and lack opportunities for physical activity.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The City of Beavercreek currently owns seven (7) cemeteries, of which three (3) are active and registered with the State of Ohio, and four (4) are inactive/historic cemeteries. Active Cemeteries: A. Aley Cemetery B. Hawker Cemetery C. Mt. Zion Park Cemetery Inactive / Historic Cemeteries: A. Coy Cemetery B. Reese-Petro Cemetery C. Sunnyside Cemetery D. George C. Zimmerman Cemetery The cemeteries are operated under the Cemetery Division of the Public Administrative Services Department, reorganized in 2009 from the former Parks, Recreation and Culture Department by the Beavercreek City Council. As such, previous annual reporting occurred as a part of the annual Parks, Recreation and Culture – Annual Report. II. ORGANIZATION The cemetery operation of the City of Beavercreek is managed with a minimum of manpower by utilizing full-time employees of other divisions as partial contributors as well as back up personnel to the one (1) full time Cemetery Sexton, along with two (2) seasonal workers during the mowing season and (1) part time Cemetery Clerk. The Public Administrative Services Director, as the party with overall responsibility for policy development and budget, is aided by the Superintendent of Parks, Recreation & Culture Division and the Assistant Superintendent of Parks, Recreation & Culture Division related to manpower management, and the Secretary for the Parks, Recreation & Culture Division for day to day accounting activities, and a Cemetery Clerk to assist with day to day support and special projects. During any absence of the Cemetery Sexton or his seasonal employee, the cross-training of Streets and Parks employees allows for supplemental manpower and back-up expertise.

It charts the history of tall building layouts, exploring the motivation behind offset-core morphologies emerging in the second half of the 20th century. Drawing from the literature, it then provides a definition for central, perimeter, mixed and offset cores, allowing for the categorization of the future 500 Dr. Philip Oldfield Bronte Doherty tallest buildings in terms of core position. It also identifies the tallest 20 buildings in the world with offset cores.
